As many of you know, I am a big fan of personalizing your device through a variety of ways. One example of how to create a unique look for your Nokia E71, or other Eseries device, is to laser engrave the device.
Savcor has a streamlined website where you identify your device (battery cover), choose your decoration among its many templates, add text and then place the order. Read the rest of this entry »
Nokia announced today that the Nokia E75 has started to arrive in stores and is available for sale.
At the same time, unboxing photos of the device is starting to appear. DailyMobile has posted some great unboxing photos of the Nokia E75, as have SymbianWorld.
Nokia Messaging, Nokia’s consumer email service which was launched at Nokia World 2008, now supports Microsoft Windows Live Hotmail.
Nokia Messaging already support Yahoo! Mail, Gmail, AOL Mail and thousands of other email providers.
The new version of Nokia Messaging also comes with a number of additional enhancements:
* Support for Windows Live Hotmail email addresses
* Support for HTML-formatted emails
* Advanced email server settings configuration - http://email.nokia.com
* Support for 18 S60 devices in 17 languages
* Client and service performance improvements
In addition to the support for Windows Live Hotmail my other favourite new feature is support for HTML formatted email! This is a convenient feature since so much of the email I receive are newsletters or just HTML formatted email.
In order to take advantage of these new features you need to download the new client. You can add Windows Live Hotmail accounts but you will receive a message in your Hotmail inbox prompting you to upgrade your email client.
Just go to Nokia Messaging to either sign up, if you are not already using this service, or send an SMS push for the download link.
Alternatively, follow the instructions in the email you received when you set up the Hotmail account, or just point your browser on your Nokia device to http://email.nokia.com/ota
Once you have upgraded the client you will see a Hotmail branded email inbox and can take advantage of HMTL support and the other new features.
We’re finally seeing some North American Operator love for Nokia’s Eseries. AT&T announced that they will offer the Nokia E71x for $99 on a two year contract, after rebates! That is a great price for a very capable device. I don’t dare to recall how much I paid for my Nokia E71 but that’s the premium you pay for getting a device unlocked and soon after its initially release.
I’ve been using the Nokia E71 for quite some time now and I absolute love the device. It’s by far my favourite Nokia Eseries device. The form factor is incredible. Nokia got the dimensions perfect this time. The device is thin but not wide, at the same time the keyboard is the best I have used. The keyboard is easy to type with and it does not feel cramped. I have had many friends using the BlackBerry Bold telling me that they prefer the keyboard on the Nokia E71.
Nokia also nailed the feature set with support for GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0 A2DP, GSM/GPRS/EDGE/UMTS/HSDPA, great 3.2 MP camera with flash and a big nice battery to boot. The battery gives you up to 4.5 hours of talk time and up to 12 days of stand by time. As usual, the boys over at AllAboutSymbian posted a great review of the Nokia E71.
I absolutely love the free application - Nokia Sports Tracker. I’ve written numerous times about this nifty little application over the past two years, yes Nokia Sports Tracker recently turned two years. How fitting that there is a new version out Nokia Sports Tracker 2(.05) to celebrate the application turning two years.
For those of you who know little or nothing about Nokia Sports Tracker, it is a free GPS based application (it works with Nokia devices with built in GPS functionality as well as blue-tooth, stand alone GPS devices paired with your Nokia device) used to create a training diary as you exercise. The application will track, speed, distance, time etc
I have to confess that I am as excited about the new features as I am excited about the upgrade process.
There is no separate download on your PC, no manual checking to see if there is a new version - if you already have a previous version of Nokia Sports Tracker installed on your device you will automatically be prompted to upgrade to the latest version when you launch Nokia Sports Tracker. Why can’t all software upgrades work like this?
It took me less than 5 seconds to download and install (yes, I am on a 3G network).
As usual, those modest, diligent, Finnish developers release a new version with little fanfare. So far there is no release notes, nor official blog post that I could find.
I have found a few new, cool features in the new version of Sports Tracker.
The first one is a “replay” feature which lets you visualize a saved activity by simulating the route. Read the rest of this entry »

Mail for Exchange, Nokia’s Exchange ActiveSync based email solution, has yet again been updated. The new release, Mail for Exchange 2.5.5, adds supports for one new device; Nokia N96 as well as fixes one issue related to Swedish language support:
If you tried to run Mail for Exchange 2.5.0 or 2.5.3 on a phone using the Swedish language the application was crashing. This language error has been corrected in Mail for Exchange 2.5.5. All Swedes rejoice.
It’s amazing. When I started this blog about two years ago very little attention was given to Nokia’s Eseries devices. There was little anticipation and speculation before the device launches. Even the Eseries device announcement received relatively little coverage in the blogosphere as well as other media. What a difference two years make.
Leading up to the announcement of Nokia E66 and Nokia E71 was a number of speculations, including leaked imagines. Now, a few days after Monday’s launch event the never dissapointing crew at All-About-Symbian has scored the first full featured review of the Nokia E71. This is an excellent, in-depth review well worth the read.
I can also recommend the first unboxing ritual of the Nokia E66. There is a video and a number of photos over at Symbian World. Instead of going for a boring nuetral background Symbian World chose to celebrate the Summer and take the unboxing photos out on the lawn - Very cool.
There is a treasure trove of photos, promotional videos and interviews with some of the product managers behind Nokia’s latest Eseries products. Just click on some of the photos or videos below.
Nokia’s event site is another place where there are additional information.
Nokia today officially announced the next generation Eseries devices - Nokia E66 and Nokia E71.
It came as now big surprise since rumors & leaks about these long awaited devices have floated around for months now. The Nokia E71 even got previewed over at Boy Genius Report. Here’s a brief overview of the device specs for the two devices:
HSDPA, wireless LAN and 3G connectivity and Assisted GPS (A-GPS)
3.2 megapixel autofocus camera with flash, video recording in QVGA
Core of the device made of stainless steel
Two colors - grey steel or white steel
Up to 20 days standby time for Nokia E71, 14 days for Nokia E66 on WCDMA
Mail for Exchange is the name of Nokia's email client built on Microsoft's ActiveSync technonology. Mail for Exchange provides push synchronization of email and other data between Microsoft Exchange and Nokia devices.
The new version of Mail for Exchange is not an incremental update but instead, a big step forward for this free email application.
For the first time Mail for Exchange now includes support for features available on Microsoft Exchange 2007.
So if you are in luck, and your company uses Exchange 2007 you have a few additional useful features.
Ability to set up Out of the Office auto-reply notifications from your Nokia device. In my opinion, this is probably the best feature of this release. A few of us have probably forgot to turn on the "out of office" function when we have rushed out on Friday afternoon when going on vacation. Or perhaps realized on the way to the airport, before a long trip, that we forgot to turn on the out-of-office auto replay. Well, no more booting up the laptop to set up out-of-office you can do it directly from your device.
However, finding this new function is a bit tricky. I expected the out-of-office function to show up in the calendar but it is not.
Instead, it is part of your Mail for Exchange profile. You need to go to the MfE application in the MfE folder, and then go to "edit profile" and buried deep in the settings for "profile" is out of office.
But once you find the feature it is dead easy to set up.
OK, let me start off with saying that this is by no means something new. I actually wrote this blog post in March but never got around to post.
However, in all fairness to those of you who are die hard Yahoo! fans and don't already know this - Yahoo! Go 3.0 now supports Nokia E61i, among other Eseries devices.
Thanks to RP_Guy I found out that there is a new (to me at least) firmware available for my Nokia E61i and Nokia E65
.
The update process went like a charm! I used the latest version of Nokia's software update tool to update the device. It is amazing how easy and painless this process is.
However, I always recommend that you CAREFULLY read the instructions before you update! Also remember to back up everything on your device since it will be reset and wiped during the process.
One last word of advice - if you are using BlackBerry Connect for Nokia make sure that the new firmware is compatible with BlackBerry Connect BEFORE you update.
Changes made from v2.0633.65.01 to v3.0633.69.00
SB-036/17.04.08

The Windows Live client for Nokia provides great access to Hotmail, MSN IM and Microsoft Windows Live Spaces. The client, which we previously covered in this blog post, is now available in 7 more countries: Hungary, Iceland, India, Israel, Poland, Romania and the USA.
The client is compatible with a number of Nokia devices including the following Eseries devices: Nokia E90, E65, E61i and E51.
So far I have the client has shown up in the downloads folder of my Nokia E51 but nothing yet in my Nokia E61i. I assume it takes some time before it shows up.
I'm really impressed by the frequency Nokia updates Mail for Exchange. It seems as if a new version is available every other month or so. Considering the fact that the solution is free I am amazed by the constant updates. Sure, not all the updates are major but I rather have many, incremental updates and tweaks rather than wait a year for some big, bundled update.
Anyway, the new version includes one fix/new feature:
When trying to synchronize with a server that has an expired certificate, the user is now given the choice of continuing the synchronization. Previously, the scenario resulted in an error and the synchronization was stopped. (From the Release Notes)
If you don't have a Microsoft Exchange acccount but still want to try out the Mail for Exchange and a push email based solution I suggest you sign up for a free Exchange account with Mail2Web. They offer a great, free service.
Still can't get enough about the Nokia E51? Fear not, there are a number of good reviews:
All About Symbian posted a well written and extensive overview. Equally thorough is the review by Smape, well worth reading. Eugenia has written another great piece about the Nokia E51 at OSNews. Mobile-review is as always also very detailed and complete in their coverage of the Nokia E51. PC Pro posted a preview/review and so did CNet and ZDNet.
