New Firmware for Nokia E61
Rejoice - the long awaited firmware upgrade for the Nokia E61 is finally available!
The upgrade is available through Nokia's Software Updater - a Windows application that lets end user upgrade the firmware of their devices.
The firmware update deletes all data from the Nokia E61 so back up your contacts, applications and other data stored on the device. The charger must be connected when performing the update.
If there ever was a smooth upgrade then this was it. Everything worked like a charm.

I’m going to wait on this until someone can verify that the iSync plugin still works after the firmware update
September 11th, 2006 at 7:41 am
All,
A word of caution: I read on another site that an upgrade (this version?) causes some problems dealing with the numeric keys as used in applications. I beleive it won’t allow numeric input in some cases and/or forces you to use the blue key to input numbers. It causes problems with the new version of Calcium.
Talk on the street is that it also kills the Bookmark and Zoom functions. Here is a link to read regarding these issues.
http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/forum/showthread.php?t=50878&highlight=calcium
Hope I didn’t break rules with this link. If so, sorry Ed.

Hi Lyle,
Thanks for reminding us all to proceede with caution - a good advice. There are no rules regarding links. Post ahead.
Cheers!

First of all, great website. Thanks for all the help with my E61. I just had my firmware flashed to 2.0618.06.05 by iUnlock.com . Is the firmware described in the post above this version or another one?
September 11th, 2006 at 7:52 am
does anyone know if this update corrects issues with intellisync? In my office we can’t get the e61 to make a direct exchange connection. instead, we need to use roadsync.

Hi,
It would be great if ther was a posssibility to upgrade my phone from macintosh, without installing windows on it

Hi,
When launching the Nokia Software Updater I get a freeze of the program when it starts and is stuck on Starting Application …
Anyone any idea ? Thanks
September 11th, 2006 at 8:12 am
I just upgraded and then installed Calcium - everything is fine. Number input works without having to keep the blue (numeric) key pressed.
September 11th, 2006 at 8:16 am
I tooo the plunge.
The system doesn’t seem different. I though it would make the UI faster, but no.
You are requred to use the blue button on the left side.
Although I think it made my internet a bit faster, but I hoped for faster UI.
September 11th, 2006 at 8:38 am
As far as I am aware - the current firmware update is purely for unbranded European E61 - people who have tried it from other areas and with phones locked to orange, vodafone and the like so it tells them there is no firmware update available.
September 11th, 2006 at 8:39 am
Hi Ed and all,
I ‘m not sure if anyone else had come across the same issue but in my case the PC Suite disconnects as soon as the SW update utility is started. Weird I know, but as it stands I’ve failed miserably in my bid to update the FW.
Comments and suggestions welcome.
Cheers,
Aran

Hi guys,
I am very new to this…and I am happy to find all the support on this site. just a quick question about the new update.
1- is it hard to update the software?
2-What about the setting for my phone and internet? do I need to set it again?
thank you guys.
September 11th, 2006 at 8:51 am
1) No it’s pretty easy
2) Do a back-up first using the nokia software and then a restore - I found I had to reinstall a couple of apps but all my others settings were fine.
September 11th, 2006 at 8:57 am
“causes some problems dealing with the numeric keys as used in applications”
everything works, just have to press blue key with number..
September 11th, 2006 at 9:00 am
Charles,
Looks like I missed your post by a minute. But judging by what you’ve said it certainly fits the bill. As per my previous post, the SW update utility in my case simply fails to detect the phone. So i had the PC Suite running in background and that showed as soon as I clicked the connect button on the update utility, the phone got disconnected from the PC. Furthermore, I’m on Vodafone so if your sources are right, then the update is not for me ;(
For the benefit of others, FW info as displayed on my e61 is as below:
1.0610.04.04
19-04-06
RM-89
Nokia E61
Ed, apologies for my long winded post, please feel free to shrink it if necessary.
Thanks
September 11th, 2006 at 9:21 am
is there a way to know what is being updated so i can know if it is worth the trouble. my e61 is working just fine now,
what differences did you notice ?
September 11th, 2006 at 9:49 am
I have a question, unreleated to this.
I have a 2gig mem card. How do I connect to Gmail, and have the email be saved to the mem card instead of the phone system. It just doesn’t have enough memory.

I bought my E61 in Singapore, I need chinese characters support. Would appreciate if someone can tell me if the update will check on the phone localization and update the phone accordingly, or the update is just for europe?
September 11th, 2006 at 10:34 am
Did they fix the bluetooth pairing issue?
September 11th, 2006 at 11:06 am
Worked fine, only that I was in DIVERT MODE when do the update, so now I have always the divert sign on the screen.
So updating again…
September 11th, 2006 at 11:10 am
what is Divert Mode? can some one let me know.thanks.
September 11th, 2006 at 11:17 am
Divert Mode, is when I instructed the phone to divert all calls to another number
September 11th, 2006 at 11:33 am
Anybody knows why after updating (correctly) the divert sign is always on, the one with the arrow meaning ALL calls diverted. This is not the case, I receive normally calls. Strange …
September 11th, 2006 at 12:18 pm
I have Thai firmware on my E61, and I got no problem updating my phone. If anyone here used to manually update the firmware to your e61 before, you will notice that there is only 1 firmware version for e61 (i.e. all languages, I believe, in 1 firmware). The localize settting on your phone will remain the same after the update. If you want to change the language of your phone, you will have to do it manually by 3rd party software.
September 11th, 2006 at 12:31 pm
I updated my firmware and it said that it failed. But when I restarted the phone it was using the latest 2.+ firmware and my data was intact… What do you guys think happened?
September 11th, 2006 at 12:35 pm
Hey All,
Its good that there is a new update, I installed it and well so far not seen a difference with it, but i do have a small problem that has come up I am not able to get a sound alert me when i get a new email the light goes on and the sounds work with everything else from ring to getting text messages.
Please help
September 11th, 2006 at 12:47 pm
Thanks Ice.
Can we up date the firmware without setting the phone to Divert Mode???
September 11th, 2006 at 1:04 pm
Any reports from Vodafone users? Will it work or is it for unbranded phones only? I have a Vodafone branded E61 and am itching for the update as it address quite a few small quirks! Cheers, wab.
September 11th, 2006 at 1:19 pm
First encountered bug : when switching phone off and turnong back on, the RETRIEVAL SETTINGS, E-mail To Retrieve is reset to 1 Kb, no matter what was entered before.
September 11th, 2006 at 1:32 pm
Second encountered bug: when new emails come in through mail for exchange no sound or vibrate working. email light does go on and does stay for the time period selected
September 11th, 2006 at 1:32 pm
hey jsy updated mine no problems uptill now only pain was to setup email n other settings again
September 11th, 2006 at 1:40 pm
I did the update and everything seems to be working well. The contact software seems much improved with the ability to search by company etc (this may have already been in an ealier update).
One thing has me stumped though:
I used to see all new mail (and numer of new messages on the mail screen but the folder is gone and when i get an alert I have to go to messages to see who the new email is from.
Anyone know how to fix this?? WEnt to the new nokia store in NYC and they didn’t know but directed me to your site!
any info is much appreciated

September 11th, 2006 at 2:45 pm
Hey guys,
I have a Vodafone UK branded one, while trying to make the upgrade, I received a msg : no software update available for your phone…..what the hell is that ??? was hoping to move to blackberry, mean go to use the visto push email solution used by Vodafone UK, and you know what : it sucks….
Ha someone a solution
September 11th, 2006 at 2:51 pm
Olivier,
I suspect that this update is for the unbranded version and that is why you get that message. Have you asked Vodafone UK?
September 11th, 2006 at 2:59 pm
Sweeet!!!
I downloaded the phoenix sw/ and the whole bundle ,but did not want to go through with it,
and my wait is finally over!
Now I just need to pick up a new fron fascia for the phone!

OK, so can I ask what does the firmware actually fix or add? Is there a features/fixes list anywhere?
September 11th, 2006 at 4:20 pm
I’m crying and crying: I have a Mac! I have Parallels to eun windows but it cannot get to my E61 vua the Nokia suite. When if every will i be able to update over the air. My local service center says it would take em two whole weeks - repeat TWO WHOLE WEEKS to send my E61 off and get this uodate on it…again I’m crying into my mac in Edinburgh tonight!
September 11th, 2006 at 5:09 pm
Andy,
Don’t cry on your Mac. I suggest you ask one of your PC touting friends to let them use their device for 30 min. That is probably all you need.
Will F,
Chad posted a link to Symbian-Freak (above) where there is a list of fixes.
Cheers

Hello,
Hope you all be fine, please if someone can help me, I would like to know if the firmware update you herein speaking supports spanish?? Need that information before to update my phone.
Regards and thanks
September 11th, 2006 at 6:07 pm
For E70 users, BEWARE! The Firmware update turns your E70 into a useless brick. It literally kills the phone. See here for a fatal screen shot.
September 11th, 2006 at 6:16 pm
it still doesnt fix my exchange issues. damn. oh well. e61 for sale..
September 11th, 2006 at 7:35 pm
After I got the new update I lost one very useful feature: the ability to enter characters that are not available on the keypad as well as in the table that appears when you press the ‘Chr’ button. The trick I figured out myself - press the blue key, then hold Ctrl and punch the ASCII code of the desired symbol, after you release Ctrl - the symbol appears (just like typing ALT+num combinations on a PC). I am very sad they have removed this feature from the new firmware. Btw - anyone know way to enter special characters?
September 11th, 2006 at 7:49 pm
rx, did you done your Firmware upgrade? mine also got chinese input and worry also like you, i bought mine in Malaysia.
September 11th, 2006 at 8:16 pm
Ivan, just press chr button while pressing another letter of your choice for that corresponding letter special Character.
September 11th, 2006 at 8:29 pm
I can’t upgrade my E61 because I use a Mac+Virtual PC and it won’t work. It just keeps on saying my E61 isn’t connected!
September 11th, 2006 at 8:40 pm
rx and Johnny,
you can go ahead and update it… as I said before, I got a Thai firmware (flashed from Chinese firmware). The upgrade ran smoothly and preserved my language preference. If you cannot update the phone, the updater will tell you…

September 11th, 2006 at 8:45 pm
BAH!! I just upgraded my e61 and now I have to use the blue numeric shift key to enter numbers into Calcium, to access any application shortcuts, and to access any of the Web browser shortcuts. Also, the cursor is now more than just a flashing line . . . there’s a distorted triangle to the right of it. Any suggestions?
September 11th, 2006 at 8:55 pm

Nokia E61
September 11th, 2006 at 8:58 pm
Hi JeffK,
I think Trent (the developer) is already planning a fix for some other issues so I assume that he will address these as well.
September 11th, 2006 at 9:09 pm
I sure hope so. On a POSITIVE note, the firmware update seems to have fixed my e61’s voice dialing capabilities. The original firmware would not recognize a single voice command or contact that I’d issue - so far it’s been 100% accurate since the firmware update. For that alone, I can deal with pressing the shift key to access the bookmarks and apps via the numeric keys.
September 11th, 2006 at 9:42 pm
DOUBLE BAH!!! The firmware update has switched the keyboard layout of my e61. Now, pressing most of the keys @, /, ?, etc. no longer produces the same characater that is printed on the keys. This is seriously rediculous - I read about several similar issues with the pre-release firmware, but you’d think Nokia would have ironed out a few of these problems before releasing the firmware to the public.
SO . . . anyone know how to flash my phone back to the previous version? or better yet, how to flash it so that, once again, the keys on the keyboard match up with what the OS is entering on the screen?
September 11th, 2006 at 9:59 pm
TT, thanks the advice, my worry is like JeffK just posted, the keyboard format…
September 11th, 2006 at 10:04 pm
I just updated but now I am getting SIM registration failed … any ideas ?
the phone works just fine but the message keeps coming up

September 12th, 2006 at 12:33 am
JeffK,
I have never got the voice dialling to work…
Only 1 out of 200 contacts has a voice tag… How did you set them up?
September 12th, 2006 at 12:38 am
Well I have a unbranded E61 with FW:
1.0610.04.04
RM-89
and i get No update avail here in the United States…
Oh well maybe it’s a good thing based on these bugs i’m reading about…
***********And ATTENTION MAC USERS with PARALLELS***********
there is a way to get your nokia to work as pc suite under parallels.
*disclaimer* - messing with any system files can screw up your system. you should have a backup in place.
that said - i’ve had no problems after the Hack. here’s what i found to do this:
Go into Terminal and do that following:
once in the terminal I proceeded to the
/System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns
directory:
cd /System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns
Then I moved any file with USBCDC in the filename using the following command:
sudo mv USBCDC.kext USBCDC.kext.bak
This way, if my system was hosed I could use the disc that came with the Mac to get into the system and revert the files back to their original names just by reverting their names running the command in reverse, ie:
sudo mv USBCDC.kext.bak USBCDC.kext
There were about 6-10 files I had to use this command on. What happens here is the file is simply renamed with a .bak extension on the end, meaning it won’t be found when the system looks for the original file name, which ends in .kext. sudo is required because these are system files, which shouldn’t be changed lightly. You should not run into problems requiring reinstalling OS X using the method above. In fact, I was still able to connect a USB flash drive with no issues under OS X while running the VM. I don’t use any tethered modems since my phone has bluetooth, so no issues should come up, but of course YMMV. If I do end up with issues from Bluetooth I’ll let you know, but iSync worked beautifully for me as well following this hack, indicating that this won’t interfere with the bluetooth connection either.
September 12th, 2006 at 1:21 am
Just updatet…so far no problems at all ! (denmark)
September 12th, 2006 at 1:57 am
erm… I’ll think I’ll wait before upgrading my firmware based on the plain stupid bugs apparent in this latest firmware. What was the rush in the first place? They’ve just replaced existing bugs with newer bugs! Who tests this stuff…
September 12th, 2006 at 2:36 am
I guess australians are left out in the cold as it says no new verison available, oh well i will keep on trying until it updates. Will tell you guys when it works

September 12th, 2006 at 5:30 am
I have a branded Vodafone UK E61 and when I was doing the update something went wrong and the connection was lost, just the same problem that happens to the E70. I followed the instructions carefully. Now it does not reboot
I will try a Nokia centre this afternoon.
September 12th, 2006 at 6:35 am
thanks TT, agree with Johnny.
in my E61, the Chr button also has a chinese ‘zhong’ character. i just worried if i upgrade it from the europe firmware, it would screw up the chinese support. but… think nokia won’t do a stupid thing by bypassing such checking? monitoring the forum first:)

—New York City Issue–
For those on Cingular who live in NYC, you’ve probably experienced the nasty problem of this phone dropping its data connection at every turn, requiring a restart to restore it. Does anyone know if this firmware fixes the problem? I tend to doubt it but since I’ve tried everything, this is the last-ditch before I have to give up this phone. It’s simply unusable in NYC but works like a charm in every other city I’ve visited.
September 12th, 2006 at 7:35 am
I updated my E61 - UNLOCKED
Upgrade was easy. It does seem to be a little faster, but it loast all my downloaded apps and said it couldn’t install from my memory card. Had to reformat card, download again and tat resolved the issue.
THe other BIG PROBLEM is that it remapped my characters on my keys, so I no loger get what I expect when I “blue key”. I get some wierd characters.
Have posted to Nokia. Will let you know what I learn.
Thanks,
Nick
September 12th, 2006 at 7:50 am
rx, no worries. I have a Chinese zhong on my chr button too. Flashed with this europe firmware. All a-okay!
September 12th, 2006 at 7:51 am
Is it just me … or does Web Feeds in the browser totally ignore “Always Ask” for access point and uses what was previously selected (through user defined).
September 12th, 2006 at 8:03 am
Anyone updated thier firmware with the spanish KB layout. Did the firmware screw anything up? I don’t want to update if they KB layout is screwed and anything else.
September 12th, 2006 at 8:10 am
I just tried upgrading the firmware for my e-61. I downloaded the update file and installed it. Ok thus far. Now, I connected the cable from e61 to PC and also plugged the adapter. I then double clicked the desktop upgrade ikon. The installation process went upto step #3, which took a very long time. There was a shaded bar on my lap-top screen which is supposed to indicate the progress. Unfortunately, after a while all I could find was a little blinking blue blip on the left-most edge of the status bar. That was when my internet konked. I cancelled my installation, connected the internet again and tried reinstalling. Got the message that there was no more update. Could someone help me on what has happened. I don’t seem to have lost anything. All my data seem intact.
September 12th, 2006 at 8:43 am
JeffK,
Having the same problem with the keyboard layout. The @ symbol on the keyboard displays an arabic symbol….No way to fix it with in the options or settings menu. I guess we will wait for a fix from Nokia.
September 12th, 2006 at 9:09 am
thank you for your site.very informative.
my querry is about the upgrade.I bought my E61 here in the Philippines
and im not sure where it is manufactured because in the box it says made in finland but all the accesorry is from china.do you how to check where it is made from?and is it safe to upgrade?
thanks so much.
E61 is the best..
September 12th, 2006 at 9:09 am
thanks weesen, TT, Johnny
okay i’ve successfully upgraded the firmware!!!
i haven’t explored alot, but so far no major issues. no blue key issue.
the chinese dictionary is under Tools menu, so it’s still there, unlike other installed apps. but since the day i use my new 2Gb sdcard (long before the firmware upgrade), it keep asking me to install the word database. if i switch back to the nokia sdcard that comes with the phone, it works. would appreciate if somebody can tell me which files i should copy over to new card.
now contact can sort by firsname lastname.
all the installed symbian apps under Installation folder are gone, left 1 java opera mini (but can’t be run). in the shortcut key menu, i still can see shortcut to those apps, a bug? but i reinstall all the apps and all are working fine.
another bug from prev firmware still has not been fixed. in the contact list search screen, after switching from english input mode to chinese input mode, it still retains the english input mode. i must go to prev menu and go in again in order to let the chinese input mode take effect. but it won’t happens for chinese to english. hope will be fixed in next update.
previously hhjunk posted that the contact list can be searched by company name. but i still haven’t found how to do that.
thanks, i really like E61

I want to update my firmware on my E61, but I can’t go past the connection to my laptop stage! I have a blk macbook and parallels running windows XP and Nokia PC suite. I can pretty well run all Windows programs and manage all sorts of peripherals from my virtual Parallels PC. But when I connect my E61 via the USB cable this is the error message I get: “usb device you are trying to connect to the virtual machine is being used by another device… Find the application that blocked up the device and disconnect it manually”. Very strange. Can’t find a way around it. Has any MacBook and Parallels or Bootcamp user encountered this problem before? Thanks

Other than my “Web Feeds” anomoly (see above) - all is well with my Spanish QWERTY E61.

September 12th, 2006 at 6:14 pm

September 12th, 2006 at 6:30 pm
@ TC - I have not been able to get my E61 to connect via Parallels - same problem as you. BootCamp should work better (as it’s accessing the hardware directly) but I don’t have it running any more…

Read the post from brian.. it might help you guys..

My update is fine, but they still have not corrected my biggest problem. The calendar will not sync correctly if the time zone is set to Hawaii. I have to set all of my time zones between the phone and computers to a different time zone and then syncing is perfect. It gets confusing adjusting the time zone or times if you are traveling and it screws up all the times in the calendar. Drives me nuts.
September 12th, 2006 at 8:51 pm
to Johnny, yes the chinese input still remain and keyboard format still work.
September 12th, 2006 at 9:03 pm
rx, thanks, i think i’ll going to try soon, but not now because my place ADSL is upgrading… damn like snail. anyway many thanks.
September 12th, 2006 at 9:13 pm
to ranz: I just upgraded the firmware on my unit, with no problems. I bought mine from Phils also, unit was made in Finland, unlocked (bought it at DigitalExchange).
September 12th, 2006 at 10:37 pm
Hello guys…. I found major bugs have been corrected that I noticed in the previous firmware….
1) Distortion in audio at full volumes has been considerably reduced
2) In the previous version when u set the “Say callers name” option to on and when u get a call while listening to Music the callers name is not spoken but instead in that gap music is played which I thought was very disgussting…nd Hurray it has been fixed in this firmware…
3) I havnt noticed any changes in Keyboard format…etc, Everything is the same and Chinese Input still remain same…. I’m from India so I have a phone thats made in China…
4) Browsing is lot more faster and editing in a Webpage Textbox is easier… ie.. I can move the cursor up and down in the web page textbox which wasnt possible in the earlier version(I had to move the cursor sequentially front or back…)
Any more Changes I notice I will inform u all…
September 12th, 2006 at 11:22 pm
Hi Guys,
I also just updated my firmware ..no real problems although several of my added programs were not recovered from my back up file. After reinstallation, they all seem to be working fine.
I do have one problem.
When I turn the phone on, it automatically starts Installing and tries to download from the memory card. Then an error message Unable to download from Memory, Please go to Applications Manager to complete installation.
Once I cancel it is fine but would love to find a fix for this.
Regards
Chris
September 13th, 2006 at 12:30 am
To ICE : Your application is not loading because a firewall is blocking access for the program. I had the same problem and I’ve lifted my firewall to give the program internet access. You should check the Security Settings in the Control Panel if you’re an Win XP user and if you have an anti-virus or a firewall application, make the program and exception to the general blocking rules.
With Norton Antivirus it’s best to just disabled the antivirus program for the time being and the program will load just fine. Don’t forget to enable your antivirus after you’ve loaded the firmware.
September 13th, 2006 at 2:31 am
I upgraded my E61 to the new firmware and now I LOST my Chinese character input ability and previous contacts with Chinese characters have become a square sign. When I tried to change the language from setting I am left with only 3 choices - Automatic, Espanol, and English. Previously I had Auto, Chinese and Englih. Also my new version Calcium will not accept numeric.
I bought the phone in China two months ago, unbranded versions.
Any help will be much appreciated. To those using the Chinese characters you may want to wait and see before updating.

i have my reservations on upgrading, for two reasons:
my dsl connection sometimes lag, or disconnects after a while. i am afraid i might get a brick if i upgrade via NSU (how big/how long does the the update take? does it download the update file first before the actual update, or is it streaming?)
i’m very afraid of the keyboard thing messing up.i think we can identify which series number do actually get the keyboard mess up, or is it random? by the way phone bought in the Philippines, nokia e61 ph, 35621
September 13th, 2006 at 3:35 am
addendumon the above: location code 530031. where is that? is there a possibility i will mess up my keyboard layout after the upgrade?
September 13th, 2006 at 4:13 am
If I cannot resolve the Chinese character issue, any hope of going back to the old version of firmware? and how, if it is possible.
I had tried upgrading twice, and twice I only have English and Espanol.
Would appreciate some enlightenment.
Thanks

Hi I have updated my E61 with New firmware & my observations are as follows:
1. The best thing is now you can save all your messages and emails on to your memory Card.
2. In the web browser the shortcut keys have to be used in combination with the function (blue) key.
3. It removes all your existing applications and keeps them as intallable .sis in installer folder with coded names. I haven’t tried reinstalling from the same but installed them freshly.
4. The catolog shotcut will be placed in the main menu, unlike in tools menu.
5. When you try to make a number as default number in a contact, now it asks if you want phone, email…etc. and when you choose phone then if will show the phone nubmers to choose.
6. When you install applications what I oberved is very few of them will have the original installable files strore in \\C:\Installer folder. Unlike all installed files being stored there previously.
7. The issue of my 2GB memory card hanging is still existing. I found a work around as follows:
Go to tools and click on memory card short cut, options->remove memory card. Choose OK. It will automatically start working again without physically removing the card or rebooting the system.
8. I found the web browsing is faster in this version than the previous one… may be my feeling
9. It would have be great if there is a way to store even the contacts on memory card.
10. The happiest thing for me is after this update, my laptop connects to the phone automatically unlike manually trying to connect is through microsft bluetooth or widcom bluetooth.
My suggestions while updating the software:
1. Remove your memory card and backup only your phone memory. This way we will ensure that our contacts/groups and messages/emails & profiles are safe. Otherwise if will take a sweet two hours to restore the memory card contents. Dont rely on the PC Suite synchronization for contacts as it truncates many numbers.
2. Preferably reinstall all applications instead of installing them from the coded installers. My suggestion is leave the phone memory as much free as possible, otherwise it might through out of memory error while opening few applications.
3. Do not disturb the phone while updating. I havent touched it until it rebooted itself
I will post more as I find them.

Kulam,
NSU will download the update files first and then perform the update…

Once I cancel it is fine but would love to find a fix for this.”
Chris,
I had a similar problem. When I went to App Manager I found Golf Pro Contest 2 status “not installed”, and could not re-install it. (Perhaps I had deleted the original *.sis file from the memory card). So I went to Nokia support web page ( http://www.nokia-asia.com/nokia/0,1522,,00.html?orig=/E61/support ) and downloaded a fresh copy of Golf Pro Contest 2 *.sis file to my PC and reinstalled it via the PC Suite.
That cured the problem.
Oh, I went back to App Manager and removed the “bad” version of Golf Pro.
September 13th, 2006 at 4:30 pm
indeed a problem for branded phones, I have a Vodafone France (”SFR”) E61, and no update available… i’ll try to get the unlock codes from the operator !
September 13th, 2006 at 5:05 pm
Well, mine will no longer sync with PC Suite unless I manually start both sides, as well failing to install an application about 1/4 of the time. Retrying often fixes this.
it now freezes when downloading lots of mail over 802.11. It used to crash instead, which was actually better, as it would at least end up in determinate state.
Re NYC issues. If your carrier is Cingular, remember that because Cingular is actually two, not one, GSM system IDs, you need special Cingular firmware loads to make teh switching transparent.
September 13th, 2006 at 6:16 pm
hi,
MORT NYC, RANZ, KULAM,
your also from the ph? have you experienced the same problem? got my ohone from globe, could the sim lock have anything to do with this?
im using an e61 from ph, when i ran the updater it says that there are no updates available but when i checked the firmware version it says
1.0610.04.04
i assume that means it is not updated anyone have the same problem?
thanks for any suggestions you may have
September 13th, 2006 at 6:34 pm
to E e SK -
I have a similar problem. I bought my phone in NYC and flashed it myself to get Chinese input/support. Everything worked fine…. until last night when I was stupid enough to do the upgrade to the new firmware.
:((( my Chinese support/input are all gone…
Tried flashing back to the older firmware, but the phone won’t allow ya. I’m not surprised though.
Sigh. unfortunately all I have is the old firmware files, can anyone shed some insight on how I can resolve this? My guess right now is either I have to run to the Nokia support here and hopefully get it flashed to Chinese (which cost some money) or find a way to get my hands on the new firmware files… >
September 13th, 2006 at 6:39 pm
rx,
My E61 also has a chinese ‘zhong’ character on the Chr button. What is the product code of your E61? Mine is something like 0525447. The code is printed on the sticker inside the battery compartment.
Do you have any problem with the keyboard layout (i.e. @, /, ?) on the new firmware?
September 13th, 2006 at 7:25 pm
Has anybody had problems with the sound from the music player after installing the new firmware? I now have this weird bug: when a new song starts, the bass is all gone. It only comes back if I turn the volume up/down. Ideas?
September 13th, 2006 at 7:25 pm
TT, thanks for the info. i find also that the backup option is not too reliable on the phone itself. i backed-up my dads phone a month ago (wanted to reset the phone to cure the sms sending-freezing bug) and when i restored it im surprised it did not restore the notes/calendar.
- about the firmware, as far as i know (correct me pls if im weong) you cannot downgrade a firmware version. best you can do is find the same firmware version for a different language pack, then install it. how to do this is beyond me. seems a lot of E61 users been getting a headache due to the NSU firmware. will wait a couple of weeks, see if there’s improvement on the upgrade/firmware issues.
September 13th, 2006 at 7:46 pm
firmware update was fine, but like chris, whenever i switched off my phone, and switch on again, i notice it says ‘installing…’ and installation failed, and that i should use the app manager.
tried to go to app manager and remove them (because installing from there does not work…), but could not do so. the items are some weird gibberish.sis.
Can anyone tell me how to remove them, save for a hard reset?
thanks!!

First off, great blog! Thanks for taking the time to put this out.
Secondly, regarding Jerry’s issues with Cingular in NYC, I’ve yet to have any serious issues with Cingular dropping my connections. I’d love to hear from you about what issues you’re facing with Cingular in NYC. I have a 64K Cingular SIM. I’m not sure if that has any bearing on your problem but more or less, my GPRS connection works pretty well.
Thirdly, I think I’m going to hold off on updating the firmware until Nokia irons out the bugs. It sounds like there’s too much of a discrepancy in how the update behaves on different phones.
On the version 1 firmware, does anyone have a problem with a restriction on auto retrieving email from only two accounts and do email settings seem to “forget” what connection they should use?
September 14th, 2006 at 12:25 am
[...] I just installed the firmware update for the E61. That’s right, all by myself I installed it. No sending my phone away or figuring out where the hell a Nokia Service Center is in the US. That itself rocks, thank you Nokia. I definitely appreciate it. [...]
September 14th, 2006 at 4:17 am
I got some serious problems with the “Lock Code” after upgrade.
Trying to change the “Lock Code” gives “Code Error” after trying
to input new “Lock Code”.
If I try ot disable “Auto Lock” I get “Code Error”
After trying 5 times I have to wait 5 more minutes. And still
the same problem.
So every morning my phone is locked and I have to pull the battery
So you should probably make sure you have not activated the lock code
before you upgrade.

To Zin and ePanda,
Zin, My E61 product code is 0529664, I guess that makes it English and Spanish languages, that is why it was updated with English and Espanol firmware version. I do not have the “Zhong” character on the “Car” key.
ePanda, I thought you had successfully flashed with Chinese language pack, as you mentioned in Howard Forum.
I am now in Singapore. I asked the Nokia service center here this morning and he said he could try to flash it for S$26.00 with Chinese pack but I risk screwing up the phone and render it useless. Guess I will return to Shanghai next week and have it flashed there.
My suggestion as a loyal user of Nokia phone (must be my 24th) is that Nokia should make it selectable for user when updating the firmware. We should be given the choice to select what language group during updating, because at times I give away old phones so that I could buy a new one. It helps sales. Current method gets us all stuck and we need to pay money to have it flashed by third party.
Just some thoughts, problem still not solved though.
September 14th, 2006 at 6:16 am
To Rx, Weesen, Johnny and Zin, and all E61 owners having Chinese haracter set,
Can you confirm if all your E61 has the character “Zhong” on the “Car” key?
What is the product code? Is it the same as Zin - 0525447. If this is the version having the SimplifyChinese pack I will go out there and buy one tomorrow.
It is now quite clear the updater will download by itself the right firmware file according to the product code. If we have a different language from the product code suggested it was simply added by someone else later.
Thanks

I upgraded my Nokia E61 to the new firmware and everything works perfectly. No changes to the keybord layout and using the new version of Calcium i don’t have to use the blue function key for numeric input.
Also viewing videos in Fullscreen mode from files converted with Smartmovie at 1200kbs at 30 frames per second is no longer jittery. Now it’s perfectly smooth.
The only thing I don’t like about it is that it reduced the max. volume for playback of music and video files, but that can easily be resolved by encoding with a slight volume boost.
All in all a great phone and a great firmware update.
September 14th, 2006 at 7:58 am
Sorry, the product code of my E61 is 0524755.
September 14th, 2006 at 8:30 am
Hey thats not whats happening in my case….. While playing the movie it hangs every 2 seconds of play….its very irritating…donno why this is happening… this was not the case with the earlier firmware…. Any suggestion guys???
September 14th, 2006 at 8:33 am
zin, mine is 0524755 same as you. but after i read all this problems i still not confident with the new firmware.
September 14th, 2006 at 8:37 am
i just wondering you guys who have upgraded the new firmware, did you all have format the phone after flash?
September 14th, 2006 at 8:50 am
Johnny Says:
If you back up the phone’s settings and install the new firmware and then restore your phone, you will not need to reformat. All the settings will return back as you had it. That was the case with mine.
September 14th, 2006 at 9:08 am
E61 in Canada,
for my point of view, i will prefer to format it, start with the fresh. then you can test what actually wrong with the new firmware.
September 14th, 2006 at 9:51 am
RE: NYC:
I switched to the 64K SIM card and still experience the issues. What happens is I’ll come up from the subway or walk a block or two and the phone cannot connect to the data service. It just churns and churns. When I restart the phone, it connects fine.
Kenton, what is this special Cingular firmware to which you speak?
This is such a mystery for me and my friends who have this phone in NYC. We all experience the same problem.

Im a NOYPI…loud and proud. As of this time havent updated my E61. Im still carefully evaluating entries of opinions from our E61 users friends worldwide.I find this site very handy and kudos to everyone for sharing your infos.I like to share what I have tried an SMS Accelerator supplied by NOKIA which speed your sms sending if you have problems with sms. After installing the sis file,my problem was gone.Just visit nokia europe website
they have all the updates you need. Also i updated my PC Suite to its new version and its impressive.
September 14th, 2006 at 10:20 am
Johnny Says:
You do know then that updating the firmware WILL reformat your E61, and that backing up and restoring will only re-apply your settings and data that you have backed-up and restored. There is no need to update the firmware and manually input all of your settings.
Like I said in my previous post, my update was flawless and except for the minor issue with the max volume not being as loud for the music player and real player, all in all it seems to be performing a little better.
I just wish everyone else has the same experience.
September 14th, 2006 at 3:11 pm
Hey E61 in Canada,….where did you get your firmware from to do the update? I bought my phone in Australia and there is no update on the local Nokia website yet.
September 14th, 2006 at 5:39 pm
Ee S K -
yes you are right. i DID flashed it successfully with chinese firmware… but this was for version 1. after nokia’s software update, everythign was formatted back to english/spanish (my model is the same as yours, apparently). so right now i got version 2 firmware…. and so far i’ve tried: reflash to downgrade my firmware (doesn’t work), use the dogtoe method (v2 firmware looks like it’s only got euro version - from what i can see on Phoenix). i also tried reaper for a bit yesterday, but had some trouble downloading some of the firms. so… sigh.
no, problem not solved. it’s silly that we can’t choose a language we want. to be honest, this phone as far as setup hasn’t been exactly the most “user-friendly”, something you’d expect from nokia, however - i’ve had a lot of fun with it and my only gripe is that a good-intentioned update now gives me more trouble than ever. why, nokia…?

Backup your phone’s setting using the Backup function of your Nokia PC Suite software that was provided to you with your phone. Download and install the Nokia Firmware Updater program from the Nokie Europe website. Follow the instructions provided. Once the firmware is updated choose the Restore option in the Backup function of your Nokia PC Suite. The whole process should take no more than 15-30 minutes if you follow all the instructions properly.
Please read the instructions of your Nokia PC Suite and the Firmware Updater.

I have the 2.0618.06.05 firmware version. I bought the Nokia BH800 bluetooth headset. It paired fine and maintained connection for a few hours. Then it disconnected. I reconnected it. Now it keeps continuously asking permission to allow connection to BH800. Like every minute. If I don’t respond it drops the connection.
Does anyone have a similar experience? If yes, have been able to overcome it? How?
September 16th, 2006 at 7:16 am
First of all, many thanks to Ed for this great blog. I am enjoying my E-61 so much more with all the information around.
Now on to business, I am in India and have a phone which is made in China. I had issues backing up my phone with a weird “Connection Lost with the phone” error which got resolved when I updated my Smart Suite to v 6.81.13.0. After that it was smooth sailing. I backed up the phone memory, downloaded the Firmware Updater and went through the process. It was a cakewalk, the firmware was updated and the phone rebooted. Everything worked fine. I also reinstalled the new version of Blackberry connect which was again pretty smooth.
When I insterted my SDCard, which had most of my applications installed and was also the storege device for my messages, there was an issue since I could not re-use it. I ended up formatting the SDCard and re-installing all the apps and ofcourse lost all my messages (But that wasn’t a big deal). They came back later.
As far as the performance is concerned, I am still playing around. I Will post any significant changes which I see. As of now,the following have changed
1) The Contacts are showing up as per what you chose “First Name Last Name ” or “Last Name First Name”
2) Browsing seems a tad better but I’ll need more convincing to believe they actually worked on it.
3) The phone seems to have lost its volume a little bit but the quality of the audio seems better than before.
4) The O/S navigation and performance is a little faster. Again that could be because both Phone memory and the Card Memory has been reformated.
I’ll keep posting more things I notice as they come.
Cheers

I have a Vodafone UK branded E61. Although the phone itself is unlocked, I cannot use the software updating utility. As others have stated, this upgrade is for unbranded phones because I see the “No software updates available for your phone” message. I’ll head off to the local Nokia service center and ask what they can do for me.
September 16th, 2006 at 1:37 pm
I want to download the new firmware but wanted to back up my phone 1st (as people have recommended). Every time I try to use Nokia’s PC Suite to do this, it gets to 1% and then says “Connection to phone was lost. Please reconnect and restart backup”. The phone is still connected (the icon in the display confirms this). Has anyone else had this issue and, if so, how did you fix it?
I have no problem syncing the phone usually but I am using the older PC Suite as the newer one would freeze during syncs (would love to fix that problem too!)
I’m running XP Professional 2002 SP2. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi ePanda, Zin,
I tried to have Chinese language added on top of new firmware to my English/Spanish set by a third party but not successful, well, at least not after 5 hours. Since I had to leave for States, I traded in my E61 for a new native English/Chinese set (0524755 with “zhong” chracter over the “Car” key) and guess what, the set has already been updated by Nokia. The software version is 2.06.18.06.05.
The seal of the box was broken in front of me so there is no possibility the set was flashed after it left factory. So Nokia has already delivered sets with new firmware.
Anyway the shop is still trying hard to flash my first set with Chinese over the new firmware, if he is successful I promised to pick it up later when I return to Singapore this month. It will be a nice gift for a hardworking staff.
The new set has the same problems some people encountered - need to press blue key continuously to input numbers; keep telling you on start up some software could not be installed, etc. But internet access seems to be faster though.
Cheers,

so the product code with 0524755 is Singapore version, default have Chinese input and keyboard have character “Zhong” on the Chr key.
i think i will not going to upgrade my E61…

Ranz,
thanks for the reply, the update is also avaialble in the nokia professional center in T. Morato and according to memoexpress(the company handling the a number of Nokia Prof centers) they will be available in the otehr centers by the end of this week.
Ill also try the SMS accelerator thanks for the advise

I’m in Australia should I be waiting for the update to become available here?
September 17th, 2006 at 5:17 am
To Johnny,
The 0524755 version is not just for Singapore, but China as well, or any country that has businesses with China. I guess it is available in Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, China, or even Taiwan. Not sure the product code for version for Taiwan and Hong kong that also usees traditional Chinese.
September 17th, 2006 at 5:25 am
I downloaded the new firmware version to my E61 from Singtel / Singapore with Chinese characters (English / Chinese language sets) and have also no problem with the device. The only problem is that i dont see any differnce in the performance. Can somebody tell me how i can change or add languages on my device? Is there a way to make the fonts bigger for messages?
Thanks, I appreciate your great forum here. Keep up with the good hints for this great product.

September 17th, 2006 at 6:12 pm
Hi all,
Has anyone had this problem with their E61? :
comments? suggestions? violent reactions?
out of the box, SMS sending is fine, then after a few weeks, the sending delay takes longer and longer, until it sometimes takes as long as a full 2 minutes for messages to get sent, during which time you can’t do anything with the phone! Backed up all my data, did a hardware reset and then restored my data. Result: SMS delivery normalized, but after a couple of weeks the creeping delay starts up again.

please help…
