Printing From The Nokia E61
I received an email from a reader of E-Series.org, Kenneth, who successfully set up his Nokia E61 to print with a Brother Laser Jet printer. Below is Kenneth's email:
In an effort to use my E61 to its fullest potential I stumbled across an application in the Office folder called “Printers.” I (like probably most people) thought it was only for Bluetooth or maybe the even more rare infrared printers. However, at closer inspection I discovered that the application prints to supported HP printers through Bluetooth, Infrared or WLAN connections.
I started looking through all the documentation that came with the E61 but nothing told me how to connect to a networked printer. I finally found a document on Nokia’s E61 support website that helped.

Here you will find the settings need to connect to a network printer. Here are the things you need:
Your Nokia E61 supports the LPR print protocol. For details on the protocols, refer to your printer documentation.
• The IP address or DNS name of the printer.
• The user name. This is only needed if the printer requires it.
• The queue name.
I tried using the DNS name but never got a connection using my Brother laser printer. It was not until I used the IP address that I got a connection. My printer had no user name so I left it blank. I found the queue name under the port setting in my printer and faxes control panel. After that I was able to print emails using my printer. I had some problems printing Office documents transferred to my E61 as the formatting was not correct and it had a tendency to spit out random blank pieces of paper. Using Office docs created with the E61 printed fine.
Thank you for sharing Kenneth!
If you have any tips or tricks you would like to share with the rest of us please drop me a note.

I got mine to work with my Kyocera FS-1010
Using a D-Link DI-724P+
Printer: Kyocera FS-1010
Driver: General
Bearer:LPR
Access Point: Home WiFi
Host: D-LINK IP
User:E61
Queue:lp
And then it worked a charm, figured it out all by my self
Even printed something that said “This document was printed from a Nokia E61″
September 10th, 2006 at 12:41 am
I use an epson 777 and I have no idea where to find the queue name, I looked under my printer settings tabs under ports and the only thing I see is a box checked USB001
September 10th, 2006 at 5:04 am
I haven’t managed to get it working on a LaserJet 2600N (I can’t find the queue name) but with a Brother MFC-722SN it works great. I too assumed the printing support was bluetooth only, so pleased to find this works, though not sure yet if it’s actually useful.

Anyone get this working with Apple’s Airport Express?
September 10th, 2006 at 9:42 am
Hello,
I have a Brother MFC-420CN and can’t seem to get it to work. I printed out the network configuration page from the printer which has a lot of info but I’m not sure what I need.
I entered the IP address but am not sure what the Queue name is. Is it the “NetBIOS Name”? If anyone [Ollie] could give me a little help I’d appreciate it.
Thanks!
September 10th, 2006 at 11:09 am
I found the queue name using the Printers part of Control Panel on a PC et up to print to the printer. On the Ports tab, I looked in the advanced settings (under TCP/IP I think) and there is was.
September 10th, 2006 at 11:27 am
The Printer has to have its own IP address. It cannot be “shared” It must be truly networked through a router
September 10th, 2006 at 11:31 am
JPP…. this is what i did.
I went to printers and faxes…
selected my printer and right clicked to properties
went to the ports tab
fount the printer under tcp/ip port and clicked configure
under that i found the queue name

I have setup my HP Photosmart as soon as I got new E-61. I have HP PHS 8450 and with Nokia’s support for HP printers with built in drivers and Socket printing support it was a no-brainer. Took me 5 minutes to set all up. Works great.
The only problem I have with all of it is that I still did not find a way to print from Contacts or Calendar applications. And that is bad.
If anyone has any ideas please share them.
September 10th, 2006 at 5:02 pm
Thanks Kenneth.
I found the queue name as you instructed. As for the IP address, should I use the IP address that is printed on the Brother Network Config. log? [192.168.15.102] or should I use the IP listed on my computer (The same place as the queue name location) which is listed as BRN_72E1DB?
Thanks to everyone for the input.
September 10th, 2006 at 6:21 pm
I went to my router and used the address i found there under the brn name.

Folks - even though it’s not on the list, the nokia software updater now seems to find generic (rather than network specific) e61s - I’ve just updated mine to firmware 2.XXXXX

Hi,
I have a HP995c with a Belkin Wlan Printserver and it works fine.
E60 –> Printer –> Add
Printer: 996c
Driver: HP Mobile Printing
Bearer: LPR
Access point: ???? (Your Wlan Network SSID)
Host: 192.168.0.???? (IP of the Belkin Print Server !NO DHCP!)
User:
Queue: lp1 (or lp2 / usb1 or usb2)
Orientation: Portrait
Paper size: A4
Thats all.
Sometimes I have problems with big (1,5Mb) pctures over wlan. Then I uesed “Send” –> “Via infrared” to print.
Enjoy it!

All, you can print from your E series phone to ANY printer. Your printer does not have to have an IP address. Any printer attachted to Windows is able to print from an E series device. All you need is LPR emulator on your PC. The one I use is called SDI LPD 2.3. Do a google search and you can find it. My USB linked lexmark prints fine from my E60.

thanks a million TJ for the info
October 11th, 2006 at 4:51 pm
Do any of you folks know of a Canon IP 90 printer driver for Symbian OS? I can print with no problem from my E61 to the printer using the Generic driver which comes with the E61. However, as you can probably guess, it does not give the correct formatting of Word Documents; so a IP90 driver to run on the E61 would be wonderful! Any suggestions, thanks?
October 13th, 2006 at 2:01 am
TJ i still need help it aint workin i left the host & user box empty in the printer settings on the E61 i got the software SDI LPD 2.3 i created a print queue called hp now what should i do next

My E70 is not able to print to the HP 2100NT laserjet. Can the problem be that this printer is set to Raw settings (port 9100) and not to LPR? How can I do the settings of my E70 to this comfiguration? Or do I need to change the printer settings with the risk that no onde on the network can print anymore ;-)) ?
October 14th, 2006 at 12:12 pm
you need a print server or an emulator SDI LPD 2.3 make a search on google & get the software & it is LPR & and dont play around with ur normal settings Rus

Bearer: Socket/HP JetDirect
Access point: My home WLAN
Host: IP of the printer
Port: 9100
Orientation: Portrait
Paper size: A4
Thank you for the post and blog in general.

Is there anyway to suggest to “Nokia” to provide a printer driver for their famous, world smallest, totally portable printer, the “Nokia IP 90″ to run on the E61 Symbian phone. Or is their other programmers able to address this pressing requirement for the world travellers?

I figured out how to print to HP LJ 1300 connected to my Apple Airport Express via USB! My airport express is in mode to join to my existing wireless network (called “Home Network”).
From Airport Admin Utility:
Airport express ip address: 192.168.0.2
usb printer name: hp LaserJet 1300
Printer settings on e61:
Printer: hp LaserJet 1300
Driver: General
Bearer: Socket/HP JetDirect
Access Point: Name of the access point for your home network - mine is called “Home Network”
Host: 192.168.0.2
Port: 9100
Hope this helps for all the mac users out there.

I have the same problem as you Ausscuba.
Have you found any sollution?
thanks
May 21st, 2007 at 4:53 am
Ausscuba & zippo,
Try setting the Bearer to Socket/HP JetDirect and see what happens.
I tried LPR and some other settings but the printer spooled but did not print - just froze just as it was about to start printing.
Set it to Socket/HP JetDirect and it printed straight away.

Hi all, Any one having problems should check out the link that moobekk has posted. I was able to print from my E61 to an HP OfficeJet 6210. The printer is connected to a Windows 2000 Server and shared (As noted by Moobekk, I had to install “Print Services for Unix”). The settings I used on the E61 were:
Printer: HP OfficeJest 6210
Driver: HP Mobile Printing
Bearer: LPR
Access point:
Host: IP Address of my server
User:
Queue: HPOffice (this is the network share name of the printer on the server)
It works!

At first set host as printer’s hostname, however didn’t work.
give static IP for printer and directly point that, to get printed.

Hey,
I’ve HP LaserJet 1020 installed at work and I’ve tried almost every thing mentioned above in thread but couldn’t get my E61 working. I’ve checked the printer’s setting as well and the printer’s port is configured to USB001, so I assume it would be the Queue in E61…? Rest the Wi-Fi settings are effective…
What am I doing wrong? Any suggestions…

thanks for the tip! My e61 connected flawlessly to my hp printer that was connected to my AirPort Extreme Basestation!

I’ve a nokia e61 and an hp d6160 photosmart printer, i haven’t a wlan. I don’t know all the configuration and i can’t print. But i seriousely need it. Can someone help me? Thanx
August 10th, 2007 at 4:03 pm
Setting up HP photosmart printer from e61. You need a WLAN!! However I have printed photos direct from e61 to a printer using the cable but that is using PictBridge!!
HP photosmart 2575 all-in-one
Use driver “HP mobile Printing” (not General)
Bearer as “Socket/HP Jetdirect” (not LPR)
Access point - Home (that’s just my name on WLAN connection)
Host - printers IP address
Port 9100
with this bearer you do not need queue name etc.
Worked a treat!

Hi, has anyone been able to print to a Canon printer? I do have a Canon i850 through Airport Express, Nokia E61i. When I try to print with correct ip address, general driver, socket/HP JetDirect, port 9100 and the correct ip address to airport express base station, nothing happens.
Except that the indicator on the printer is blinking while the phone is printing, but that´s all.
Any suggestions? I do have a Mac, so sharing the printer might be an alternative - but then, how to access a shared Mac printer…

Hi, just to share my experience : I got my E65 to print to a Canon MP160 shared by a windows computer, thanks to SDI LPD.
In windows, first install the software, then just check the SDI LPD queue name. In your E-serie phone, set as :
Printer: Canon MP160 (your printer’s name, not important)
Driver: General
Bearer: LPR
Access-Point: default (set as your access point)
Host: 192.168.0.242 (my computer’s ip, the one who’s sharing the printer)
User: Utilisateur (not necessary)
Queue: Canon (from the SDI LPD software, menu Setup -> Print queues)
Orientation: Portrait
Paper size: A4

Just setup my e61 to print on my epson printer that is connected to my network through a linksys PSUS4 print server.
I fixed the IP for the print server from its admin page as the e61 does not have the software to search for the print server if it is dynamically assigned.
The queue for this prinserver unit is “P1″ although its connected to the printer by a usb line. Can be found on the print server admin pages.
printer: Epson Stylus CX3500 Series
driver: General
bearer: LPR
access point: [Your WLAN SSID]
host: [Assigned IP of Print Server ]
user: [Blank]
queue:P1
orientation:portrait
paper size: A4
Output is only for text with very minimal formatting. Only useful for word documents so far. Graphics & Internet pages with graphics do NOT print.
Do NOT try the HP drivers. Screws up the epson printer.

With Quickoffice 5.0.16 all printouts are blank!! except footnots, etc… anyone can help me? Do you recommend SDI LPD????
best regards from Madrid!
I´ll be looking forward to your replies.
