BlackBerry Connect & Mail For Exchange
I'm happy to report that I had no problems installing BlackBerry Connect and Mail For Exchange (ActiveSync protocol) on my newly upgraded Nokia E61. I just downloaded the appropriate BlackBerry Connect Client and the Mail For Exchange Client and installed them. I was up and running in no time.

I too installed the firmware update this AM after I did a backup using the Nokia PC Suite. I then did a restore of my device.
I quickly ran into a bunch of issues to get my Blackberry back to life. After the restore, nothing was working. I then realized I had to download the new client for my Series 60 (using the link you gave us Ed) AND then the new desktop application for my Windows machine (link to download it is on the same page as the S60 client).
Once both were installed, it was still not working. I discovered I had to redefine my Blackberry access point (APN) on my device (it had disappeared for some reason even with a restore). Also my “Lock Code” also had reset itself to 12345 for some odd reasons and it took me a few attempts to figure this out.
But now it works again, which is good. I like the new font used by the SMS and Blackberry client, a bit more bold. It is nicer to read and type messages with it…
For those who wonder, I am on T-Mobile in the US.
I hope this post can help someone.
Nice blog BTW Ed!

Admin,
with all your experience maybe you can help me. I am with Rogers here in Canada and I am trying to understand the all email issue. I set my email to notify me every 1hr or I can use the email button to get my mail. is that the correct way? or should I use Mail for Exchange or blackberry connect? I am ready to download one of them and I guess I need a good advise. and what should I use?
thanks.

I’m having trouble downloading Blackberry Connect for Cingular in the US. I click on the link above and go through the pull down menu’s but I get this message…Sorry, currently this operator does not support software for your device. Does anyone have a direct link for Cingular? Thanks.

I have a question. I signed up for the unlimited cingular $40 MB plan. Is it better to get blackberry connect plan, or the regular internet plan???
I mostly surf the net, and check my emails.

R N
I use Cingular and since it is not available on the Americas site I just downloaded the client from the Asia-Pacific region with “other” as my carrier.
Works for me!

Hi Ed,
How about some screen shots on what the new font looks like when you e-mail / SMS?
Thanks!

Hi Andrew,
The font hasn’t changed (I think… pretty sure it is the same)

Hi John S., Admin,
can you guys help me out in configuring my blackberry APN? I already upgraded to the new firmware and have installed the new Blackberry SIS for the new version but my BB APN still hasnt appeared. Hope you can help me out. Many thanks!

The font did change. It’s almost as though it’s a bold or heavy font. I like it. Easier to read while I drive!

I’ve attempted to use my e61 with Mail for Exchange… using MEdiaNet for access… and it keeps failing, indicating that it requires that the connection be secure. The flag is set to YES, certificate is loaded, and it still doesn’t work. (The log file is showing a 401 HTTP error… yet another user is working fine!)
Any suggestions?
September 12th, 2006 at 3:57 pm
Thanks for pointing that out Cyberdog. It’s been a hectic week… be careful driving and doing your email
Hi Technocrat,
Sorry I can’t help you. I use MEdiaNet as my AP and have set “secure connection” to YES per instructions from our IT guys. You could try a hard reset or before that, ask your IT dept again.

Hi,
Has anyone tried to use blackberry connect over WLAN? If your BES is accessible over a WLAN link, you “should” be able to. When I tried with the previous version of software it didn’t work, so I was wondering if anyone here had tried that.
Thanks
E
P.S.: AWESOME BLOG!!!!!!!!!!! You are now my browser’s homepage on both Mac and E61. Keep it up!

Hi All,
I have small but annoying issue; I have a Vodafone branded e61 with a Blackberry Connect client loaded onto it and everything works just fine, except for one thing:
The name of the blackberry mail box seems to be set at “Mobile Mail” - this also appears as the service book and seems to be set by Vodafone in the UK. Does anyone know how to change this name ?
Many Thanks,
Alex
PS Great site by the way - enjoy reading it daily - keep up the good work !

By the way, thankfully the new firmware version seems to get us rid from the annoying “@” bug. With BlackBerry, the “@” icon is supposed to mean that there are unread items, but I had it always on, no matter if I had unread items or not. Now it seems to work ok.
Agree that the new font is much easier to read.
September 13th, 2006 at 10:15 am
I just updated the firmware on my Nokia e61 and the font did change but only for my SMS and Pop3 e-mail. The mail for exchange font is still the same.
September 13th, 2006 at 11:49 am
Just to close the loop… my Mail for Exchange issue was related to my hosted provider config… it now works well.
What I would like to understand re: use of the BlackBerry client is what to expect with E61 battery life… when enabled for always on.
Great site!

Does Blackberry Connect alert you to new emails like a regular blackberry? Is it the same standard email box or a different one? Please help.

Hello everyone,
I wonder what does Nokia mean under “GSM-Offline mode (flight mode)” for BlackBerry. How does exactly that work?
Anyone?
Many thanks.

John S. or anyone who can help me.
I recently got the e61 and have been trying to set this thing up so I can utilize all of its capabilities. I was having problems with opening text messages(phone would freeze and eventually restart or i would have to take the battery out), turns out that was the sim card, so i got a new one, problem solved. I would like to set up the blackberry email and I am on T-mobile in the US.
How do i set that up?
What is the new firmware and how do I get it and install it?
What is the mail for exchange service?
thanks in advance

Prior to the firmware upgrade every email account I set up on t-mobile BB Connect worked fine. Each account was pushing email as expected. After the upgrade, BB Connect pushes the email of only one account and not the others. I made no changes to the settings for those accounts. Has anyone had the same issue, and if so, any remedies? Also, after the upgrade I ho longer get an audio alert that I have a new message, even though one is set in the General Profile I am using.
Thanks

Hi all. I just got an E62 from Rogers. I’ve installed BlackBerry Connect (after having used Visto - Rogers Mymail). I notice that attachment functionality is limited with BB COnnect as compared with Visto (i.e. Visto uses Nokia proprietary document viewers and allows audio file attachments to be opened - I have voice to e-mail). Before I decide to switch back to Visto (even though it would result in much higher data usage, and charges) does anyone know of ways to expand the functionality of BB Connect on the E Series phones?

Nokia E-61 (E-62 maybe) Blackberry Connect Configuration…
After reading E-Series posting about Blackberry, I decided to take the plunge into the world of Blackberry (on the E-61). Here is what I did to get my unit configured and running Blackberry Connect: 1. Call Cingular and ask……

I purchased an e50 last week and installed BB connect. My carrier is tmobile. I am able to associate the e50 BB connect pin with my BES account but it will not sync. I do have the blackberry service enabled in the connect client. And the service books appear on my e50. I am guessing that it’s an APN issue. It looks like the connect client is hardcoded to use blackberry.net APN. Is that correct? I tried setting up an APN with a connection name of blackberry.net and then blackberry pointing to wap.voicestream.com and then to internet2.voicestream.com. Neither worked. Does tmobile need to authorize the pin on their side? Or do I need to be authorized for their blackberry APN? I’m hoping that the tmobile users here who have this working on their e61’s can shed some light for me. Thanks.

I ended up installing blackberry 6.18 which never worked so removed it. if anyone can help that would be great.

Hi Vispan,
You need to use the following version for the upgraded firmware of the Nokia E61 -> “Nokia S60PR2 BlackBerry Connect 6.28.3_4(.SISX, 1,5 MB)”
it is available for download here:

E50 problem
Hi,
I have a problem and it is driving me crazy! I’m on Orange UK and installed Mail for Exchange on my new E50.
When I sychronised with my exchange mail server (Hostway) a security setting was sent or pushed to my phone. After that I have to enter a lock code if I don’t use the phone for 15 minutes. It didn’t do it before.
It is really more than annoying and is the only problem I have with this phone which is very good.
I cannot extend the autolock duration more than 15 minutes (or set it to never). The code has be a alphanumeric code of at least 4 digits which means it takes some time to type in (as you need to change the text type).
I am very keen to resolve this - I don’t like the idea of the server forcing security settings to my phone. This is not a work email server, it is my home email. I have spoken with my hosting support and they are unable to help.
October 8th, 2006 at 5:36 pm
Hmmm, I am not sure if that period can be extended. It’s the same for me. It also locks within 15 minutes…

Update from my previous post…
I Got my E61 blackberry connect installed! - Finally!
The mistake I was making was that I was using the Cingular E62 blackberry connect. I installed the T-Mobile E62 option & it worked fine!
Now … I’m running into another issue…
Rogers is refusing to activate my E61 saying the PIN isn’t from one of their blackberry’s so it’s NOT compatable, hence they are refusing to activate
So much pain!
Did anyone else (from Canada) here have such issues?
Were you able to resolve it?
Plz reply.

Dear all,
i am running into some real trouble here and need some help!!!
I was using Blackberry on the e61 and it was working fine. Then it suddenly stopped to sync with the server after trying to get it back on for a while I de-installed everything (also on the PC) and reinstalled it.
Now I can’t get the Nokia Blackberry Connect software to run again.
It gives me error messages like: error refreshing settings’ and ‘ The blackberry server is either unavailable or has been specified incorrectly’!
I checked with our IT unit and they told me that on their side everything is working properly! Oh and of course they do not support the Nokia blackberry connect services…..
I then started researching on the web and found that a couple of people seem to have the same problem and that it was related to Outlook 2000 SP3 (which I am running as well)!
Unfortunatelly this is the authorized version in my company so i cannot just change or upgrade it…
Does anybody has an idea how i can get my BB service back up and running? Otherwise I will not be able to use the e61 anymore
thanks,
yoel

Ashok & Rohit …
Toruble for Mail for Exchange on any of the e-series software has to be sorted out by your admin. I use E61 and the thing was resolved by my IT Administrator/ Exchange Administrator.
Step 1. Make sure that the you Have ActiveSync enabled at your Exchange end. That means you will have to confirm that the Exchange Server running is Exchange 2003 Service Pack 2.That will push the email to your Mail for Exchange.
Step 2. You will have to confirm the security settings.
If you are already having Exchange Server 2003 SP 2 then its a matter of settings. You have to have settings at your server end re configured.
In the end FINAL WORD … Its amazing . And now I am trying to my phone away from me. It contagious. Probably if I can’t find my E-61 it might be the light has gone up and my wife has hidden my phone somewhere.

Admin,
I’m trying to install the Blackberry connect software on my Nokia e50. Although the install works fine, and I’m able to see the Blackberry option under Messages->settings->email, the PIN is not generated. Could you tell me what has gone wrong ?
I used the executable provided by the Nokiaforbusiness site. This has an extension of .sisx. I’ve been given to understand that there was a version of the same installable with the .sis extension which works fine. Would you know where i can find this ?

Anyone:
Has anyone figured out how to run BlackBerry Connect and Mail for Exchange (ActiveSync) at the same time? I want to be able to access both personal POP and IMAP accounts in addition to business email via MS ActiveSync (since I do not access via BES).
Thanks,

Does using Blackberry Connect improve battery life? Does using the Push email help battery life? Anyone here getting incredible battery life?
A Battery doesn’t last very long unless Mail for exchange is set to sync every 15 min.
Regards, W

My experience:
1) Mail for exchange –> Battery drains out in 20 hours(approx.)
2) Blackberry Connect –> Battery lasts for 2+ days
Mail for exchange set to “Always On” during peak time. I have stopped using Mail for exchange.

I’ve tried both offerings and must say, I keep coming back to Blackberry Connect:
BB:
- Poor support for opening attachments
- Supports meeting requests
- Supports corporate addressbook lookup (GAL)
- Better battery life
- Requires additional subscription (on my provider anyway)
M for E
- No support for meeting requests (can’t accept/tentative/decline, etc)
- No GAL lookup
- Good support for file attachments (uses built-in Nokia apps)

Hello,
There was a November inquiry concerning concurrent use on an E61 of Blackberry Connect and Mail for Exchange to allow for separate personal and business mail on one device.
Has anyone successfully done this? Mail for Exchange 1.5’s release notes warn that syncing e-mails, contacts or calendars with Nokia’s PC Suite after installing Mail for Exchange “can corrupt the hones memory where these items are stored”.
I am currently syncing the E61 with my personal MS Outlook contacts and calendar at home and using T-Mobile with Blackberry Connect to push personal e-mail.
I want to add Mail for Exchange in order to get e-mail from the office MS Exchange server while keeping that mail separate from my ppersonal e-mail on the E61.
Any advice or experience with such a scenario anyone?
Thanks,
Eric

hi there,
I am trying to set up Mail For Exchange on my E61 with Tmobile service and I am stuck up at as its asking
1. Exchange Server
2.Acess point
Idont know what needs to be typed in those two boxes?
can anyone help me any help will be greatly appreciated
thank you
May 11th, 2007 at 1:10 pm
Hi NP,
1. Ask your IT admin for your Exchange server address. No one else can help you.
2. Access Point is the name of your internet connection profile. For T-mobile it could be T-zones or another of their data plans. It depends on what data plans you have.
Cheers

Hi guys,
Nokia have released v7.1.4 of BB Connect for the E61i over at the business downloads website:
http://www.businesssoftware.nokia.com/blackberry_downloads.php
Please note that although it states it is for Germany only, it is working perfectly on Vodafone in the UK.
Been searching for this for since I got the handset, so thought I’d let you all know.
Enjoy!

October 2nd, 2007 at 10:07 am
Hi Admin,
I need some help. I ordered the E62 from Rogers here in Toronto.
I haven’t received it yet, but I want to be prepared!
I know I can browse the web and get my email, or use Rogers MyMail, or Blackberry Connect. I have no idea how to get Microsoft Exchange so I can sync my calendar too, I guess it’s a big expensive and complicated program for businesses. I’m self-emplyed and have 4 email addresses that come to 4 separate inbox folders in my Microsoft Outlook 2003, a program I really like. I’m hoping I can sync my contacts, calendar, tasks, notes and email with my E62. I don’t mind if all the syncing has to be done locally EXCEPT the email. I want to be able to receive email while I’m on the road. I guess it shouldn’t conflict with the local sync if I just turn off the option to sync the email when I do a sync locally, right? I’m afraid if I do both it might get buggy.
Anyway, I think I have to pay for a cell phone plan and a data plan. I think I can pay for chunks of data, but it sounds like I may have to sign up for Blackberry Connect or Rogers MyMail. Is that even MORE money?? I’m not sure how these work, or which one I should get. I would like my emails to come into separate inboxes like in my outlook… but if they have to come to one inbox, I’d at least like to see what address they were sent to, and have the option of sending from any of my addresses when composing or replying.
I seem to be finding little bits of info here and there, and the Rogers reps seem clueless. I would love any info you could possibly give me!
Thank you!
Jason
October 4th, 2007 at 9:50 pm
Jason,
Your solution is to go for BB connect with Rogers ($40 for 7Mb). You can have up to 10 addresses checked separately. Since you have 4 e-mail addresses, you can have 4 accounts on your BB connect and see each e-mail account separately, respond from the same, etc.
You should watch carefully how many e-mails you receive in a month to determine if 7Mb is enough or if you should go to the 25Mb plan ($60).
For calendar, contacts and notes, you should use PC Suite. If you don’t want to do it using the cable, bluetooth is your best bet. I have my PC Suite setup so that as soon the phone is in sight’s of the PC’s bluetooth module, it syncs.
October 4th, 2007 at 9:51 pm
Hi Sushmit,
Your best solution to check Yahoo! & Gmail is to use Seven.
Ed has got an AWESOME post there: http://www.e-series.org/archives/392

Got the BB Connect working on my E61 and my boss’s E90. Problem we have is when we send e-mails from our lotus notes account, it synchs over to the sent messages folder on our Nokia’s but shows our names as the one the e-mail is being sent to and not the real person the e-mail is being sent to. When we open the e-mail it then shows in the header who it is being sent to but then we can’t see the body of the e-mail.
If sent directly from the Nokia device, sent itmes folder works fine and shows who the e-mail is sent to and you can see the body of the e-mail. Any ideas if this works as designed or is it a setting we can adjust?
