New Layout For Menu Shortcuts

The new firmware for the Nokia E61 brings about many changes and improvements. In addition to the list of changes reported on Symbian-Freak, I have also found that the menu shortcuts have changed. The previous layout was not the most intuitive. The new layout follows the logic and layout of the numeric keyboard. However, you now have to press the Blue Function key and the number in order to access the files and application.

Hi, do you know if the new software allows you to search through all the notes?

Blue function key?!! Wasn’t this supposed to be a “shortcut”?

    Thanks for noting this,

The only problem is that Calcium, Opera and a few other also need the blue key press down to access the numbers. This eliminates any one hand operation :(

    Hi Ed!

Thanks for the useful information. I was baffled by the absence of shortcuts in the menu when I upgraded about two hours back. This shortcut layout definitely makes more sense for E61 and leaves nothing to imagination. However, pressing the blue key is unnecessary and don’t know why it has been put up. The only possible explanation that I can think of is that may be there are shortcuts for some alphabets (either in this upgrade or planned for future). If that is so, it will put E61’s huge keyboard to good use.

Also if you could post the changelog for the latest firmware, it’ll be very useful. I’ve noticed following changes in last hour:
    1. You can browse full-screen using default browser (almost) much like 6680, 81 etc. For that change browser settings.

    2. The first name, last name order can be finally changed in contacts.

    3. Time settings for e-mail LED can be changed from the default 2 mins. Earlier this wasn’t possible.

Please add on to it all users.

    Hi,
Note that the new version of Calcium does’nt need to hold the blue key in order to access numbers

Pressing blue keys for numbes, makes me to hate this new firmware a little bit…

Especially I loved to use the shortcuts while doing the browsing in the mini-map browser, mainly the keys 8 for overview mode and 1 for bookmarks. Now I have to use two hands!!!

Did Nokia perhaps switch to using the first letter of an application, instead of the number to jump it? Such a move would make sense, since this phone has a full keyboard unlike the smaller smartphones where using numbers makes it so convenient to jump between apps. Are there any other annoyances in the new firmware? My fingers are itching for an upgrade.. :)

Also I’d like to ask whether in the home screen (today screen) when you start typing on the blue keys (without holding the ‘blue key’) you start entering a phone number. Has this changed with firmware 2.x?

    Thanks!

Thankgod they have not changed that… Phone number works just fine without the blue key….:-)

I beleive Nokia designers goofed up a little bit while tweaking the Blue key+ number.
