Welcome to the Family - Nokia E62

The Nokia E62 has finally found (a second) home in North America. Cingular will be offering the device for the amazingly low price of $149.

At the risk at making hardcore Nokia E61 users' eyes roll, I really like the Nokia E62. Sure, it doesn't have WiFi or 3G and it does have less memory. However, the price is amazing and although I do like speedy downloads I think it is the right decision for the US market to skip on 3G and also WiFi for now. Especially since the price is so low. I also realize that the Nokia E62 in the US is more positioned as a mass market QWERTY device than the Nokia E61 could have been.

The Nokia E62 is being met by some great reviews. Gary Krakow at MSNBC loves it and even uncle Walter S. Mossberg at WSJ likes the Nokia E62 a lot!

I agree.. Cutting out 3G is fine. But not WIFI… Thats just insulting.
Also, the E62 has a mini USB port, rather than a POP port!

  2. InformPage Says:

This is great news for E61 users, software development should increase dramatically here in the US for the platform.

How does the E62 deal with headsets (stereo and non-bluetooth handsfree)? This pop-port business is rather annoying.

  3. Daniel Says:

I hope you buy it Ed since I really want a good review of this device. Im in love with my E61 so no change for me. But you sound like a gadget-dude so… ;)

  4. Quara Says:

    Good device for GPS Navigation

  5. Mark Rich Says:

    Hmmm…

  6. Lyle Says:

Maybe we’ll all get better support from Nokia since the 62 is a 61 less some features. I sent a note to Nokia UK with a question regarding low output in the left channel of the MP3 player and they refused to answer on the grounds that I was in the US (reverse IP lookup). Nice guys…

  7. admin Says:

    Oh I am buying it… ;-)
I agree that this is good for the E61 users in the US. I expect to see more applications and third party add-ons (although the ports are different - mini usb vs pop-port)
Anyway - it’s always nice with an addition to the family…

  8. Cyberdog Says:

I got to try out one last week. I love it! Although, I’d suspect E61 owners will not find any reason to switch.

  9. Kenneth Says:

Well I think Wifi and3G should have been added but I think this is a blessing for E61 users as widespread usage of this phone means more software

  10. Charles Knight Says:

Yes hopefully that will be the case - speaking of software - neat little app…

  11. Franco Says:

i wonder why most cellphone with wifi is being stopped in US… maybe its because telecommunication companies are scared that VIOP will soon rage the digital world…

oh well, E62 is a great model to those who wants to feel the E61 but cant afford the same….

  12. Afro Says:

it has a higher resolution (the one of the e60) and seems to have MORE memory than the e61, but who cares by using a sd card. wifi is a feature i won’t miss a minute. the only thing is the display… i believe, the next non-US E61 version with wifi will be shipped also with this screen. its unbelievable, i’ve seen it on the e60 and it was a really hard decission between e60 and the e61 :-)

  13. Eric Says:

Maybe someone can nab the Cingular IM settings for the built-in IM client so we can all get our E61’s to work with IM without using Agile/IM+. Wishful thinking….

  14. Maarten Says:

I got my E61 for €20,- with a 1 year minimum contract and €39,50 of monthly fees. For this i can roughly call 200 minutes and internet at no extra charge and with no maximum on monthly downloads…so i did not pay all that much for de E61.

Comparing that to a device that misses all those features and has a lesser screen (256k colours) i don’t feel that i pay to much!

I also do see the benefits from getting more software available! So to those people in the US get cracking at that software!

  15. Rebecca Says:

FYI for all you cannuks (Canadians) out there in e-series land….Rogers Wireless will be carrying the E62. BB Connect is not even mentioned on the Rogers website, but apparently you can download BB Connect from the Nokia.ca website. Contrary to what I said in a previous response, it seems that Canadian mobile providers are SLOWLY clawing their way out of the “techno-luddite” hole!!! hehehe!

  16. Mike Says:

I’m in the US and recently purchased an E61 (for $300). While I could have waited and spent half as much on an E62, I liked the Wifi option. While I don’t have any interest in using VOIP, it’s handy since the phone’s 3G data won’t work in the US.

The phone has the W-CDMA (UMTS) chip, but it’s tuned a different frequency… so it will work in Europe, but not here.

I will bet you all the tea in China that Cingular will release an updated version of the E62 sometime in 2007 which includes a faster processor, more memory, and 3.5G HSDPA.

While Sprint and Verizon have been busy with 3G rollout, Cingular seems to be skipping straight to 3.5G. It sounds like Sprint will be the first to roll out 4G, but that won’t happen until late 2007 at best.

I checked out the E62, this evening at a Cingular store. The salesman let me connect my Moto HT820 to it but it played back my MP3 in mono (AM quality). Maybe we did not set it up correctly. I’ve read two reviews that state that the E62 has BT 1.2 supporting stereo headphones, but I’ve also read other reviews that do not say anything at all about this issue. Hasn’t anyone else actually tried this?

  18. Oliver Says:

I want that IM application from OZ Commmunications also on my E61 !!!

I looked around but I did’t find any place. I should be available also for E61 users!

    :(

  19. Rob_W Says:

    Hello,

I have had my E62 for two weeks and even without wi-fi and 3G I am impressed with its overall functionality.

One big issue. Has anyone successfully gotten either a wired or bluetooth STEREO headphone attached to the E62. I would love to have the pinout on the 2.5mm connector so that I can adapt my noise canceling headphones.

Failing to have stereo for the audio could end up being a show stopper for me.

    Thanks for any input.

    Rob

  20. Art Says:

This puppy rocks…after using SyncTunes (for Mac) and mounted it as a Mass Storage device, I’ve got my music (at least my Bossa Nova and John Mayer and Depeche Mode albums) on my E62.

Also, I’ve been doing just fine using the EDGE - I get about 180kbps as reported by dslreports.com/mspeed. If you are a Mac user…no worries, this works with it from iSync to iTunes (the most important).

I use Mail for Exchange and it works flawlessly (although I can’t figure out how to accept or decline meeting requests).

  21. Resqueue Says:

I’ve got mine (in the US with Cingular) and a $20/month unlimited data plan. But here’s the question for you: Is it true, as I’ve been told, that if I use the YAHOO/AIM/MSN messenger software included - that each message is counted as a text message? (i.e. $0.10 each?)

    OUCH - if that’s true - i’m not a happy camper

  22. Amar Says:

yup Resqueue, its true, when you use the built in IM clients on the phone they go via SMS! thats how the service providers make money and want you to get the unlimited messaging plan (I dont think Cingular has that, tmobile does).

  23. Lee Says:

    Warning!!!
The OZ Communications client is using SMS for communication.
Last months I was enjoying the Yahoo! Messanger.
When I got the bill I was shocked to find that every post (send or recieve) on the Yahoo client was charged as an SMS (10 cents). That can add up pretty quickly.

  24. jen Says:

just got the e62 with cingular and the one thing i hate is the browser..seems whenever i exit the browser and go back i have to start all over. it doesnt keep the last visted page instead i have to go to my homepage..anyone have any solutions for this?

  25. Alexei Says:

I’m also looking for the stereo headphones. What size jack is this thing anyway? It seems hard to believe they’d have an mp3 player w/o stereo headphones…

  26. george Says:

What I do not like in E62 is the customization Cingular have done. I am trying to get GPS software but it seems E62 will not take it. Software will work with E61 however. Anyone knows a navigation software that I can buyand it will work?

Cingular sells the service via Telenav but why pay monthly?

If one is interested in using the phone for navigation I would not recommend E62. Every time I see some missing or tweaked option by Cingular it makes me cream…

  27. sSs Says:

I got my E62 for $0 without any Cingular Data Plan (but with a 24 month agreement from Cingular). There was a promotion going on myrateplan website over the Thanksgiving weekend.

    Pros
    ====
The display is great and i love the big keyboard.
I was looking in for a good PIM with multimedia capable phone which i think Nokia E62 delivers
The overall quality and look is good.

    Cons
    ====
I was on a long business trip and did not get to open the pack myself. i could have returned it and bought a E61 or cingular 8125… just started using it for a week now…
I assumed it had WLAN as i was planning to use VoIP.. too bad.. thought E62 is the next release to E61
The default music player and real player are no good, the phone kind of freezes occasionally when switching between applications
    ===

after browsing the e-seires org, techmundo, s60tips i found real useful tips. i finally have OGG-music player(beat) and Divx-video player…btw i’m using SUPER and Dvd-decrypter for my encodings… works great.
Found useful blog on syncing music from i-tunes player.

I need help of the following
    (1) how do i unlock the cingular restrictions…?
    (2) remote desktop program
i tried the RDM+ and TSmobiles, but the install fails almost at the end. RDM+ tech support sent me a reply stating its a known problem..might be due to cingular putting locks on the firmware. It;s not the certificate error as i know i can disable apps signing and certificate lookups
I found an VNC viewer beta for s603rd edtion..on sourceforge.net, but the screen looks crampled after connect
    (3) is there a way to add a USB or SD based WLAN adapters?
    (4) is there a program to compress the info on memory card so that we can add more stuff in. i’m planning to use the phone as my main multimedia player (the max it supports is only 2GB)
    (5) overall fine-tuning tips if any to make system work faster…

    Thanks in advance.

  29. David Says:

Are there any unlock codes to use Wifi on the e62 or has Wifi simply been removed from the device?

  30. admin Says:

    Hi David,
E62 lacks the WiFi module all together.

  32. Federico Sendel Says:

Is there any way to make the E62 Wi Fi capable? Buying additional hardware or something?

  33. Daniel Hdez Says:

  38. Robc17@gmail.com Says:

Hello, ive enjoyed my e62 for a few months now. The freeware community isnt very big. Here is my only problem.

i want to listen to music and watch tv on the e62 with headphones. I went to raioshack and bought the 2.5mm to 3.5mm adaptor. (those sizes may not be right but you get the point) thinking i could just plug my headphones into the adaptor. Wrong! It says “enhancement not suppported”.

has anyone gotany sort of headphones to work?

ps: you can use a bluetooth headset as headphones if you can handle having only one earbud.

  39. Douglas Swims Says:

Just bought the Nokia E62, a 1 Gig Data Card and loaded my favorite music on it. Went to plug in my great noise cancelling headphones and…well you know the rest of the story: I got “bit” by the
Nokia-proprietary-plug-bug. Does ANYONE make an adapter that will fit the E62 and allow use of standard 3.5mm plug equipped headphones?

  40. Doug Swims Says:

While surfing around I found on the Canadian Nokia website and EBay that Nokia makes a Sennheiser based headphone compatible with the E62 that is model number HS-81. Try this link: http://www.nokiaphoneblog.com/2007/02/accessory_preview_nokia_hs81_s.html

  41. Francisco Arias Says:

    @Robc17@gmail.com:
You need to find an adapter with three rings on it.

  42. FoneHacker Says:

im growing tired of my windows mobile device when i had my nokia e50 i could go to any web page i wanted with my blackjack i cannot even log into my bank to check my account, with the e62 i just got i can go any place just like my e50 so now i have two devices still trying to decide which one to keep, btw http://www.ebuddy.com its a IM program that works with the e62 and uses data not sms for messages.

  43. Caryo Says:

For the easiest way to get decent sound for the the music player, go to seido online. the headets for the treo 650 work with the e62, and there’s an adapter if you want to use your reg headphones. sound is much louder than any of the nokia headphones (i know, i bought them all over the last year). don’t forget that there’s a volume control on the headset or adapter. Here’s the link to the headsets available:

  44. Adam Says:
