Adobe Reader for Nokia E61

A reader pointed out to me that the Adobe Reader 1.5 is available from Nokia's Asia website - thanks for the tip Nader. (Adobe Reader 1.5 for Nokia E61 Download Link). Having used Adobe on various other handhelds I was eager to install the application and test it out.

Installation was a breeze. I choose to Bluetooth the SIS file over to my Nokia E61 from my PowerBook but you can as easily install it using Nokia's PC Suite or just moving it to a memory card.

Using the device it is possible to access PDF documents received as email attachments, via Bluetooth, on web pages or using the file manager to open documents on a memory card or in the  internal phone memory.

I transferred the Nokia E61 manual, a hefty 100+ pages PDF file to use as a test document.

There are a number of options regarding how the document is displayed. You can specify by percentage the degree you zoo-in or use any of the standard formatting options.

Just as with the Nokia E61 web browser there is a good search tool. The search tool lets you search text within a PDF. This is very useful as it cuts down on time looking for a certain section of the PDF. You simply enter the text you are looking for.

Any found matches will be highlighted. It is also very easy to go to the next instance of the same text.

You can easily navigate within the document using the 5-way joystick on the device or use the "go to" functionality to access a certain page number or any of the neighbouring pages. You can also access chapters in the PDF document using the bookmark functio.

I was impressed by the speed of the application. However, I won't give up my PC quite yet. It's great to be able to access PDF files from the Nokia E61. Either on the web or in an email. I can see how it has the potential to become a life saver (project saver) one of these days but don't expect the same ease of use as using PDF on your primary computer.

Do you know why you cant seem to install application over the air but need to do it via the pc-suite, e.g. adobe for the e61?

    Hi JK,
I had the same problem you had. I tried to DL using OTA but it didn’t work for me either. It’s strange.

How big PDFs have you tried with success? I couldn’t open PDFs bigger than 700-800 KBytes with the Adobe Reader on an N80, I get Out of Memory errors despite only Adobe Reader runs…

  4. admin Says:

    Hi Sebhelyesfarku,
I had no problems opening the Nokia E61 manual in PDF format. That file is about 1.6 MB. I also used the software with other PDFs that were all larger than 1 MB each.

Hmm, if nothing else works perhaps removing the battery and rebooting up works.

I cannot open file larger than 500 kb…I have books which are between 1 mb to 45 mb..

I get “not enough memory” error

  6. admin Says:

    Hi Yassyboy,
That is strange. I open files that are larger than 1 MB all the time with other applications running at the same time. I would completely restart the device (remove and re-insert the battery) and then with no other application open try to open the files. If that doesn’t work I would delete the application from the Application Manager and install it again.

also have issues opening up files > 1MB grrrr! anyone managed to figure this out.

    Cheers!
    JK

I have same issue with my N80. It just get stuck with larger Pdf’s (>1mb). If anyone can help it would be highly appreciated…

I’m having the same memory shortage issues. Even PDF files which the program (1.5 LE) was able to open initially now won’t open.
I tried the hard rest as well as re-installing the program on the memory card and the internal memory, but with no improvement.

Has anyone thought of a solution to this?

  12. Uros Says:

I think that the issue is also with pdf reader.
I had sam problem with quick office pre-installed application for office documents on my N80, and when I switched to Office Suite Full I can open larger files which I previously couldn’t…
So we can just wait for new pdf reader (better optimised) or new firmware…
What confuses me is that on some forums people stated that they can open bigger files (with some delay but still)…

The 1.5 LE reader on Nokia website is useless. There is not even a new Symbian version on Adobe Website.

I get out of memory error. I have just installed latest firmare (4/1/2007) and newest Adobe LE from Nokia website. Useless can’t even open PDF without memory error message.

I have N80, look how this problem is from June!!! 2006 and STILL it happens and no offical response from Nokia or Adobe, very poor.

Little help. When I open a PDF with the Nokia browser (launching the pdf reader), I am not able to save the pdf file to the memory card. Has anyone a solution for that?

  24. Taufid Says:

My guess is that it cannot open pdf files that has page number more than 1000. Not the size of the document that matters. Some sort of buffer overflow…

  25. Assaf Says:

My Adobe reader isn’t working and I was told by the Nokia tech support that I have to reinstall my phone because the Adobe reader for E61 can’t be downloaded and installed for free.
    Is this true?

  26. Sailesh Says:
