New Version Of Widsets
Long time readers (3 month or so
of this blog know that I like Widsets. But I am not alone. Quite a few people have written about Widsets. Antony, recently posted an interesting article about Widsets in S60tips.com.
Anyway, this morning when I started up Widsets I was met by the message below.

The new version includes changes and improvements to the client. Supposedly there is also a new easy way to create and publish widgets for your own blog or website. I already created an E-Series widsets but I have to see what is new with this version.
Must have software - Widsets for your Nokia E61 or Nokia E62

Hi,
I have tried the WIDSETS but somehow find the “newstouch” software more practical and useful.

I don’t really see anything useful there - the free Worldmate takes care of weather and I use mobireader for RSS feeds.
Maybe when it’s got a few more widgets.

Nice that they added HTTP support. I didn’t see the point of using a socket connection to pull RSS. Works for me now, but still of limited use.

Always nice with new versions of applications/services, but I find Widsets useless in my world. Perhaps future version can add features that I want to use.

Hi there!
Regarding the HTTP support that Tushar mentions, it’s there to support some specific operator networks. We use sockets as default because of the inbuilt push technology in WidSets, i.e. the client doesn’t go and look for new stuff on a regular basis, instead the stuff is pushed to the client, when it is available. That consumes less cellular bandwidth. And the main reason for sockets is of course that we have never planned to limit WidSets just to provde RSS feeds, although we believe that’s one big area to support.
Regarding Flickr, the updated Flickr widget has (in addition to the tag) a placeholder for a URL. I use it for getting the latest pictures from my friends to my phone, so I go to Flickr to the “photos of my friends page”, drag’n'drop the URL to the widget, synchronize it to my phone, and it’s there.
We’re adding all kinds of widgets, hopefully some are interesting also for Daniel and Charles.
Thx!

Am I missing something, but I don’t see a way to open the linked stories in a browser! Okay, so I love the interface. Lots of cool flash around navigating, but I open a feed, see an interesting del.icio.us tag, or Digg story, read the blurb… and then what? You’re stuck in the rat maze / silo / trunk. Me no like.

Hi Scott, we have the Bookmark and Send/Share features for use cases when you want to have a quick look at something, and then check it out later with more time, for example on your laptop. Most services provide a lot of information, which we cache so that it can be read offline, which is one major feature of WidSets. Also, opening a browser from an app and returning to the app is very risky business on many phones. But we have lots of great features on the roadmap, so be patient, we’re just 3 months old… Thx! Cheers

What people said about us until mid-June…
We launched the WidSets service very silently on June 6th, 2006, but quite quickly the blogosphere caught up and started writing about us. I’m trying to collect information about that here, but unfortunately I can’t cover everything (just too many…

Hi Steve,
Do you have problems installing other Java apps? Have you tried Google Maps, does that work?
