WiFi Connection on the Nokia E61
I have an unlimited dataplan with my carrier, Cingular, so up until now I haven't paid much attention to WiFi. Come to think of it, the Nokia E61 is the first smartphone that I have had that has WiFi built in. It's never been a feature that I have prioritized but since it now is part of the Nokia E61 I thought I should try it out a bit more.
I had no problems getting connected to a Linksys router and an Apple Airport Express. I tried it with and without WEP and it worked fine. I also tried it on a couple of networks in nearby coffee shops without as much as a glitch. There is a public network that I sometimes use that gives me a lot of problem when I bring my Apple PB but it worked fine with the Nokia E61.
I found that the connection manager that comes with the device works great as a WiFi Locator. I also tried PsiLoc's HotSpot Finder but preferred the simple interface of the native Connection Manager. Not only is it easier to use but it is also free - hard to beat that.
At a glance you can see the name of the network, strength of the network signal and wether it is an open network or not.
There is also a detailed view that gives you one more level of information of the network.
Connecting to the network was very straightforward. I opened the web browser and was asked what connection to use, you can also preconfigure connections so you don't have to decide each time you use a network connection.
You select the desired connection and the device connects to the Internet through the specified connection.

Hello!
Tanks for a very great website about Nokia E series. I have been using a lot off telephones, communicators etc during the years. Now I again needed a new gsm and I decided that it was Nokia E serie that was the best on the market at the moment. I had a hard time to decide wether I should choose E61 or E70. The only argument for E70 was the camera. I did try them boath but I bought the E61 because it was so much better to use (did not like at alla the “mouse” on the E70).
I did by the E61 on the net and I will recive it tomorrow.
Have you been trying out iny Vopi solutions?
I read that it comes with Cisco voip client but you should also be able to download other SIP clients. That is great specially when you are hanging in a W-lan (WiFi) network.

Hi Hocki,
Thanks for stopping by. As you probably can tell I really, really like my E61. I got a Nokia E70 as well, for the smaller form factor, but I have hardly used it yet. I am too engrossed in the E61.
I haven’t tried out any SIP functionality yet but I am looking forward to trying it out. Let us know how it works for you and congratulations on getting the best smartphone out there!

i have some trouble with WLAN in E61, in some hotspot sites, when we want to surf with web browser after we select WLAN they just only Connecting……..
but no problem when i use ibook in the same place…
just wondering it is a bug or something like that?
July 13th, 2006 at 10:16 pm
Hi Iwan,
It’s hard to know what could be the problem. I have used the Nokia E61 on various public sites and haven’t had much problems. I think I have come across one or two that I couldn’t connect to but since it wasn’t worth my time to investigate I didn’t bother to look into it. Hmmm, not sure what this could be about.
July 15th, 2006 at 5:48 pm
I tried using the WLAN and my network has WEP with a password. Everytime it asks me for the password. Is there anyway to store the password is it automatically saves it instead of memorizing the 64bit encrypted password?
Thanks…BTW, COOL SITE
July 15th, 2006 at 6:24 pm
Hi Kelvin,
This is how I did it:
1. Go to Tools > Settings > Connection > Acess Points
2. Option > New Access Point > Use default settings
3. Connection Name: Your network
4. Data bearar: WLAN
5. WLAN network name - search or enter manually
6. WLAN security setting
7. Change the WEP key format to Hexadecimal
8. Enter WEP key.
Let me know if that works.
July 15th, 2006 at 7:01 pm
Thanks man…it worked!
July 15th, 2006 at 7:02 pm
Sorry, this is off this topic…but would you know how to add a microsoft exchange email to the E61 even if I have configured a GMail account in the system? Is it possible to have more than 1 email account set into the device?
July 16th, 2006 at 8:11 am
Great. Glad we could help out.
July 16th, 2006 at 7:17 pm
Hi Kelvin,
You can add several email accounts on the device. It is very easy to set up IMAP and POP accounts. For Exchange there is Mail for Exchange which is based on Microsoft’s ActiveSync protocol.

Hi!
I have the same problem as IWAN. I have a Wlan network set up in my home, but i am unable to connect to it, although i can connect to other unsecured networks. It just says “Connecting” for ages! My laptop’s able to connect though.
any help will be greatly appreciated
Cheers
July 27th, 2006 at 4:59 am
Same here! Can’t connect to my Wlan.
It is now WPA-PSK (home speedtouch 580 acces point) secure, works fine with my laptop. Also my Qtec 9090 connects fine.
But the E61 won’t connect. Keeps on saying Unable to connect WPA authentification faild! Everything is filled in like on my acces point.
Anyone have any ideas?
July 27th, 2006 at 5:01 am
Oh yes, One more thing. My E61 doesn’t have active SIM card yet. It can’t register, this wil happen on the 2 august. Could that be the problem?
No active SIM so no WLAN connection?!
July 27th, 2006 at 3:49 pm
Hi Albert,
That is not the problem. I can connect without using the SIM. I have a Linksys and it works fine with my Wireless Router.
July 28th, 2006 at 1:21 am
Hi everyone having problems with WLAN connection!
My E61 works fine when I browse the webb but If I like to send an E-mail or connect to SIP I have the same problem as many of you have, it will connect for ages and nothing happens. (Though it is no problem to send E-mail via GPRS). In my case it is hard to tell if it is the WLAN modem or the telephone that will not let the outgoing traffic true.
I have understood that it is some small WLAN buggs in Nokia E series but it will be fixed when Nokia comes with an uppgrade this fall.

Dear all,
Am considering getting the E61.
Can we make VOIP call using the WLAN function of the E61? Do we need to download any sofeware like Skype? Or can it support Skype-out?
Cheers
Valanche
August 3rd, 2006 at 1:32 am
Hi Valanche!
We can make voip calls using the WLAN function in E61. The E61 comes with a Cisco voip client but that one is usually used by companies that are running Cisco manager from before.
Though it is possible to register other SIP clients as well (you do not need to download any software).
Here for example you can read more about E61 and SIP.
http://www.sems.org/entry.asp?ENTRY_ID=146
http://discussions.europe.nokia.com/discussions/board/message?board.id=connectivity&message.id=2443
http://www.fonosip.com/english/nokiae61.html
http://discussions.europe.nokia.com/discussions/board/message?board.id=connectivity&message.id=2432
http://english.martinvarsavsky.net/fon/i-got-my-nokia-e61-working-with-fon-and-making-calls-through-sip.html
Skype does not work with E61 because they do not have a software that i supported by Symbian (the operating system the Nokia E61 has).
E61 seems so far to be the best gsm/pda I have ever had (and I have had many). Though I must say that the voip and WLAN can be a little bit hard to get to work.

Hi there, this looks to be a usefull site to get and recieve helpful info for these great smartphones. I have had my E61 for about 2 months and everything was great initally. My WLan connected right out of the box, but after about 2 weeks it will not connect to my home network anymore. My home wifi is not encrypeted. The E61 will connect at other wifi spots though. My other PC’s in the house are wireless and they all work fine. Just not the E61 anymore. Any suggestions??
Another thing that is now not working is Cingulars Cingular Video service. I was able to connect and download all the different video clips and now it wont for some reason. I can view all the available clips, but when i click on one to watch it tries to connect and after a while it says”unable to find server, try again” I called cingular and they place the blame on my E61 being unlocked. But it worked fine before.. Sorry about the long post, but it took me a while to find a support place for my E61. Has anyone else have this problem with Cingular Video???? Thanks for any help and great site!!

Browsing using the web browser was a very hit and miss affair for me but after disabling the power save mode my web browser now is much faster and no longer hangs with large pauses.
tools>settings>connection>Wireless LAN>options>advanced settings> turn off auto config and change power saving to Disabled.
I’m using a netgear DG834GT router BTW.
Hope it works for others.

Thanks for all the information on the E61 - it’s extremely helpful and useful. I love my E61 but I am having one nagging problem: I subscribe to Tmobile USA total data plan which includes hotspot access. I have no problem connecting to the hotspot on my laptop. However, wi-fi just does not seem to work at the hotspots ( Borders, Starbucks etc. ) I have no problem connecting to my home wlan or other free hotspots. As anyone had the same problem and figured a way around it?
I go to Starbucks, search for wlan, accept “tmobile” and then the phone acts as if it is re-starting.
I see on HowardForums (http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=969047&highlight=e61+tmobile) that a few people have had the same problem. Also, a quick google search identifies a couple of people who are experiencing the same problem.
Any help/comments would be most welcome.

If its not too much trouble, I would like to know how the WLAN reception is on your E61 unit? Is the WLAN sensitivity about approximately the same as you would find on an average laptop ? It would appear WLAN coverage for my E61 unit dies out after a distance of about 15m from the router. Also it almost always has to be within LINE OF SIGHT proximity to the router (no walls or doors) to work…something I find rather odd.
I’m tryng to gauge people’s feedback regarding their WLAN reception with the E61 in general. If anyone has any feedback regarding the above, please reply back or email me (vai.now@gmail.com). Help a recent Sony Ericsson convert out
Thanks.
August 6th, 2006 at 12:43 pm
Reply to Mike
1. Is the E61 detecting any WLAN network at all ?
2. Have you or has anyone else recently adjusted settings for the router ? Things to look for are WPA key, MAC address filtering, max wireless client limits, etc…
3. Are you getting good wireless strength (2/3 bars or 3/3 bars) or has the router position been changed as of late ?
Lets try and narrow down the problem.
August 6th, 2006 at 4:59 pm
Steve,
I get pretty good reception with my E61; enough to roam around my house and yard, but it works good through walls though (when it did work). But its probably not as great as a laptop wifi would work. I have a linksys router.
To answer your questions…
-I do detect my wireless network.
-my settings should be the same as they always have. I do need to inquire about the mac address/wpa key and max wireless client limits. That may be the problem. Our wireless network is public and not wep encrypted.
-my Wlan has a 97% signal.
Thanks for your reply Steve. I will check the things you mentioned above.
August 7th, 2006 at 5:51 pm
hi all. i received my E61 yesterday & am also blown away with it. the only problem i have is that i don’t seem to be able to connect to a public hotspot. i scan for available access points & it finds them ok. i then define it so it saves it ot the list. i try to connect to the net & it asks which connection to use. i tell it & it just sits there saying connecting. i have tried leaving it for 2o minutes & it still won’t connect.
is there anything i’m missing. it seems straight forward enough.
thanks in advance.

Continuing the saga with t-mobile hotspot unavailability - tried to enlist NOKIA USA to help - Got a bs answer like we dont sell this phone in the USA so we cant help - Why sell a world phone if you cannot support it in the world????
Have also emailed T-Mobile but no response - as one would expect.
August 11th, 2006 at 9:02 am
yup, got an E61 yesterday, great phone. but, it will connect to other wifi’s just not my own belkin b access point that i’ve had for years. no encryption, nothing special, just plain vanilla wifi.
no idea why it wont work at the moment. its something fundamental as it won’t see the access point even if i’m sitting on it, but it will the the neighbours.
August 11th, 2006 at 9:19 am
Hi Justin,
Sorry to hear about your problems. I use a Linksys and have had no problems with WiFi. Perhaps you can use your neighbours AP
August 12th, 2006 at 2:17 am
Hi,
Have the E61 and Airport Express. I have tried all above put there simply no way for me to connect myself to my Home WLAN. I tried access point, WEP 128bits, WPA and even open network… it won’t work.
The phone works beautifully on any public hotspots though
Please help.

Has anyone been able to get WPA2 working on the E61. I suspect it may be broken. WPA works though.
I am trying to connect to a D-Link DGL4300 and can get everything except the E61 to connect to it in WPA2 only mode.
Also, is there a good reason why the E61 only supports TKIP and not AES. Most of the popular low end wireless access points / routers don’t give you the option of using TKIP over WPA/WPA2, only AES.
August 13th, 2006 at 5:16 am
Does everyone have solid wifi receptions on their E61 handsets ? Mine seems to die out after a distance of about 10-15m from the router. Should I have the retailer provide me another unit ???
August 13th, 2006 at 10:44 am
Well you can try to increase “Transmit power” this should increase coverage zone
August 13th, 2006 at 11:07 am
I can use my wi-fi network fine, however I am unable to set the Web application to use an Access Point GROUP. So currently I have the app set to ask me what connection to use every single time I browse the web. It would be really great to know if there’s a way to tell the Web app to use an access point group. Am I in luck?

I am having the same WiFi problems as the others. It worked fine on my airport express network until I went on vacation and took one of my airport expresses with me. When I came home I reset the network because of set up problems and it hasn’t worked ever since. The Phone detects the network but the connecting bar is endless. Not sure what to do. Has anyone had this happen, and corrected the problem? Any imput would be greatly appreciated.

Matt, my E70 was acting up in a way that sounds like the trouble you describe.
Have you tried clearing the cache? On the E70 this is
Web > Options > Advanced options > Clear cache
August 17th, 2006 at 5:23 pm
Peter, thanks for your quick reply. I tried clearing the cache, but no luck. I’ll keep trying.
Thanks again.

I’m seriously considering buying a Nokia e60 in the UK, where i already use voIP heavily through my provider Vonage.
I read the Russian reviewer’s review which mentions that aside from the problems already listed the phone suffers from:
1. Incredibly short battery life when using WLAN/SIP
2. Phone gets too hot to handle after 20 mins talk time using SIP mode.
Does anyone else experience this with any of the e series phones?
many thanks,
Tarik

Hi,
Has anyone had any success with the WLAN connection issues? Mine was working for a short time at home but now is not able to connect. Can still see the network but the “connecting” message eventually times out. If I attempt to exit while this message is displaying, the device resets.
Any advise appreciated.

Hi all –
Thanks for such an informative site.
I am a prof. And would like to have my students create some apps in python and flash for the smartphone. It seems that the e61 is a good choice and I just wanted to confirm a few things:
We have an open wifi configuration where I work. I gather that the e61 should be able to connect to the wifi network w/out a sim card, allowing us to browse, check email, im, etc… w/out a sim card?
A sim card is obviously necessary for any call related actions. If the students were to go online solely via our campus network, use the phone capability of the e61 simply for sms and talking would they/we need anything more than a pay-as-you–go smartcard? I have contacted Cingular (my provider) and was encouraged to upgrade to a dataplan for use with that phone, but was also told that as they don’t currently sell the e61, Cingular could not guarantee that a dataplan would work or was even necessary (???), hence my post.
Any thoughts would be much appreciated.
Thank you,
James
August 27th, 2006 at 4:50 pm
Professor James,
Welcome to the site. You are correct in saying that the E61 can be used in an offline mode without a sim card. While you are in offline mode you can connect to your local wifi. This feature was greatly appreciated as I was in transition from my nokia 6620 to the E61. I put my sim in the old cell phone and transferred everything over to my new one. I also have Cingular service and I have the unlimited data package, which works quite well. I tether my laptop via my E61 often. Everything (internet/email) works well with the Cingular network; they (Cingular) will often tell you that because they don’t sell this particular phone that features may not work properly. Just make sure you go to the Nokia website and configure your access points. My only current problem is getting ORB to properly run all the time.
It seems I can only view my webcams on my cell when i have a low signal and not at all when i have a good signal. Yeah i know that sounds backwords.. it is weird.
August 28th, 2006 at 8:12 am
Mike,
I tried tethering to my laptop but never quite got it working. I have a Macbook Pro and Cingular Unlimited. If you are using a Mac, could you post some steps to get this working?
Thanks!
August 28th, 2006 at 8:14 am
Mike,
Do you use a Mac? I have Cingular Unlimited as well, and use a Macbook Pro. So far, I have not been able to tether my phone properly. Could you post some steps on how to do this?
Thanks.

I have a problem with WLAN as well. I am trying to run WPA/WPA2 with PSK but the phone will not let me select PSK only EAP. I have tried a hard reset. Is there something I can do? Thanks!

Hi.
I had used my E61 to connect to a public wifi hotspot in a Subway Restraunt. But, i am not able to connect to my WLAN setup in my office with a complex sysid and i am able to connect using my laptop. I run Win XP Pro on a Intel Centrino Notebook. The WLAN setup in my notebook talks of WEP with key being provided automaticaly. Can anyone help me in connecting to my office WLAN.

Hy all,
tonight my wifi connection went fine at the 1st shot (almost) (using wep as security level).
Howevere I’ve noticed the if the wifi has hidden ssid, even if the wlan is already configured, you can’t use it.
Is there anyone has problem defining connection groups?

Hi everybody,
I just got my brand new e61 yesterday and i while i was connecting to my wlan at home for surfing the internet i’ve noticed that web browsing is really slow. My laptop connected to the same hotspot is significally faster in surfing the net.
I’ve tryed ” tools>settings>connection>Wireless LAN>options>advanced settings> turn off auto config and change power saving to Disabled”, like somone recommended before but still the same.
Altough the hotspot grants browsing speed for my laptop of ~ 200 kBps, surfing trough my e61 won’t exceed 2 kBps (with a good wlan reception) . Has anyone experienced similar problems ? (and solutions).
Thanks

Hi
I’m having the same problem as many above - unable to connect to my open home wi-fi setup, just shows ‘connecting’ bar and sits there endlessly. Have looked all over and many forums but no luck. This is the first thread i’ve seen with many others with same problem… it’s driving me mad..!
Any help appreciated. I’m using Billion wifi router. It is open, no encryption, other laptops find and connect easy…
thx!

Thanks so much for this website. I got my E61 a few days ago, and I’ve been on this site constantly, absorbing lots of great information.
I was able to get on my home wifi network flawlessly the day I reveived my phone. Today, I downloaded the proper cingular settings from the Nokia website so that I can use the GPRS to access the internet since I pay for a small plan in this area. When I went to get onto the wifi network through the internet, it now wont let me get on it anymore. Says “WLAN connection failed” although the phone still sees it as a strong connection.
Any ideas?
thanks, lee

Hi,
Request help here. There are 2 features I am not using in the E61.
1. I am not able to connect to my office network thru WLAN. The phone detects my WLAN but it does not access the WLAN and just sends in the message “Connecting”. Probabably I have not configured this properly.Pls.guide me on this.
2. I am not able to access my office Email which is Lotus Notes. Will I be able to access my Lotus Email of E61? If so, what is that I need to download?
September 12th, 2006 at 8:23 am
Hi,
Same problem as a lot of people at hotspots.. just sits there “connecting”.. has anyone managed to suss it out?
Cheers
September 12th, 2006 at 11:42 am
You started this thread saying that you have not really used WiFi on the E61. What uses does it really have? Can you sync via the WiFi - walk in the office and have it automatically sync. That way I could avoid the data plan - which I would like to do. If it really does not have value - the E62 may just be what I need.
Any insight on the value of WiFi would be appreciated.
September 12th, 2006 at 12:46 pm
Hi Tom,
I could give up WiFi on a device but I couldn’t give up the data plan. There are many applications on the device that can take advantage of WiFi and provide quicker download speeds (performance) for tasks such as browsing the web, accessing email, etc. Also, with WiFi you have the benefit of using VoIP.
However, I still think that for the majority the E62 will give you 80% - 90% of the functionality but for much less price.
If you would like to know more and discuss this in details send me a note.
Cheers

I’m new to the e61 ; So Far I love it.. I am having an issue w/ WLAN though. It works fine if I just do web > find WLAN > and then select my home LAN and enter the password.. However If I try to add a connection to my Home LAN in the Tools > Connections dialog.. It will not accept the connection..
I’m also unable to Use the “define access point” option to save the connection in the Connection > WLAN area..
anyone seen anything similiar?

Looks like everyone is having some troubles with the wifi. I went to the Nokia Store that opened up here in NYC the other day. I explained to a very nice guy that this was the only problem I was having with an otherwise really great phone. I also told him that Nokia USA would not help me with my issue since they don’t represent the E61 model in the states. I continued telling the man about how I tried to call Nokia UK where I got the phone from, but they also wouldn’t help me since I don’t reside in the UK or have a UK phone number. The nice man seemed to sympathize with me about my dilemma and lack of interest from the Nokia people, but he said they are really strict about support in the countries of origin and not diviating from their rules due to black market goods. I kind of understand– they probably want to regulate the phone to know which hands it’s in before it hits a customer in any number of places.
Anyway, he did tell me that he had heard of this issue a few times and that the only way to fix the wireless connection problem was to (most likely) install the upgrade. Of course, I’m out of luck because A- I can’t download the new software being in the US, and B- I use a mac. Sigh. I guess I will live with the wifi issues.
On the other hand, I do notice that I can go from one wifi signal to the other and connect successfully. What I can’t do is continue to connect from the same wifi source past the initial connection. If there was a hard reset on the phone, it might solve the problem, but I don’t know how to do this. Perhaps someone here could shed some light?

Hi,
am using my E61 on Apple’s Airport with WPA/WPA2 at home. Try the following:
Settings->Access Points->”select WiFi Network”->Options->Advanced Settings->IPv6 Settings->Automatic (instead of default setting: well known).
Connecting worked without a problem ever since.
Hope this is of some use,
Cheers.

I have an E70 and had a problem, similar to what some of you guys are experiencing I think. When connecting to my home WLAN (which doesn’t use WEP or WPA), I have no problem connecting. Can’t complain about performance either, when downloading podcasts using Nokias Podcast software, download speed is about 200-300kb/s.
However, when I first tried to connect to my office WLAN (which uses 64bit WEP), the phone “freezes” at “Connecting…”. The signal strength was excellent 80%-90%, WEP key was entered correctly and I had no problem using the WLAN from my laptop. What I finally did to make it work was to enter all 4 WEP-keys, not just #1. Luckily they are all the same.
After I filled out all four keys it worked. However, I’ve noticed that the speed (download, don’t know about upload) is terrible. Surfing feels OK but downloading files takes very long time, speed is pending between 0 and 25kb/s. My laptop downloads the same files at about 500kb/s.
Sadly, I haven’t figured out why speed is so low. I’m just guessing here but I think that the WEP encryption might be the reason. Might even be so that 64bit is slower than 128bit, in case 128bit is HW-accelerated and 64bit is not. If someone knows - please post.

Hi! After reading all of the comments that are posted here. I can see that most of the readers are not having problem in connecting to the Internet using wireless routers. In my case I’m having problem connecting to the internet using my Netgear router. I already tried configuring the settings for my E61 but I still cannot connect. However, when I tried searching for available network it can see my WLAN.. I can see my network but can’t connect. Do I have to enter all four WEP keys inorder for it to work

Hi folks,
Got a problem with my E61 while trying connecting my home access point. My Nokia finds the access point with no problem, but while trying to connect it, the mesage apperas: “unable to connect, no WLAN network found!”. What’s up? The authorization key is fine, I’ve double - checked. I suspect that the reason is in my wifi router - I use D-Link DI-624+…
Thanx in advance

Does anyone have a solution or have had the wifi connection issue but have found the solution. Please share you insights with the rest of us.
Issue:
E61 detects the WLAN but it does not access the WLAN and just sends in the message “Connecting”
September 26th, 2006 at 4:26 am
In my case problems with “Connecting” to WiFi disappeared after flashing a new firmware.

One thing that might be useful in order to find a solution to the WLAN problem is to check peoples firmware version.
My E61 worked nicely straight out of the box with WEP WLAN, but I have the aformentioned problems on open WLANs.
September 28th, 2006 at 7:51 pm
2 questions:
Which VOIP provider in the Us is compatible with the E61?
Is there a function on the E61 that allows it to switch on its own between WIFI where available to GPRS behind the scenes or do I have to manually switch? I have cingular as my SP.

Hi
Mp E61 keeps asking for my WEP key and it cant remember it - this is a major usability cock up on behalf of nokia. i spent hours trying to sort out. When i enter the WEP key password in connection settings - it wont exepct my key because it can only except 5 characters. Any ideas?
Thanks

Danny,
Go to “WLAN Security settings” -> “WEP Key settings”
Change “WEP encryption to that your wireless point uses
Change “key format from ASCII to “Hexidecimal”
Then you should be able to key in more than just 5 characters.
Cheers!

I think I’ve worked it out as I too had the same Wifi Connection issues.
You need to resolve your Nokia device’s WLAN MAC address.
To check the WLAN MAC address type *#62209526# while the phone is in the idle mode.
Then you need to LOG in to your router and add the mac code manually with the device name as UNKNOWN.
Make sure you apply and try to connect again through your phone.
That worked for me.

for those of you with home network connectivity issues, please refer to the blushy post August 5th. disable powersaving on your wireless preferences. for whatever reason, this makes the lan functions screwy. Changing this setting resolved the issues I was having.

Hi,
Just my experience with Wifi on my E61. I had turn off the power saving mode. Everything works fine. But occasionally my linksys will be hang by E61 connection. I know this because I did it many times. My PC connection will breaks when E61 try to connect. So I have to power down my linksys before the internet connection is back to normal.
October 3rd, 2006 at 2:48 am
Well, like so many others, I’m having trouble with the WLAN on the device. It won’t connect to my home newtwork using WPA. If I turn off the encryption it works fine, and if I go to a coffe shop it connects to an open network fine. As soon as I turn on the encryption, it gives me “WPA authentication failed”
I am positive I’m entering the PSK correctly (I have tried multiple different types of keys, all numeric, alphanumeric, combo — nada!) My laptop connects fine, so I know the router is functioning properly.
I have the latest firmware. My router is a DLINK DIR-625 Wireless N router but I have it set to connect with all types, not just Wireless N. I have the phones MAC address entered in the router to be allowed to connect, I have power saving turned off on the phone and I have changed the IPv6 settings to automatic. I’m at a loss on this. I know its nit picky since I have the TMobile internet package and can use the EDGE settings to connect, but man, the WIFI is one of the main reasons I bought the phone and I’d like it to work properly! (insert whiny voice here)
I’d really appreciate any help you can provide. Nokia US basically told me “screw you” and nokia UK hasnt returned my emails.
Thanks in advance.

I just bought the Nokia E61 and I live in Texas. I have two question, please answer if you have any thoughts - as if I decide to return phone, I have to do it quickly.
1. Should I wait for the E62 since I live in the states? Is there an advantage to the E61 or would I be better off with the E62???
2. The top right button on the phone seems to be pretty loose - is this normal or should I be concerned?? Actually, both the top right and left buttons seem to be loose - the right more so.
Please help!!! Thanks!!!
October 4th, 2006 at 10:40 am
Hi Adrian,
1. I have both the E61 and the E62. The E61 is more feature rich (WiFi, 3G) than the E62. I would stick to the E61. However, the only major advantage of the E62 is that model is supported, through Cingular, in the US and the E61 is not supported in the US.
2. My top right button is also a little bit loose.
Cheers
October 4th, 2006 at 11:13 am
Thanks so much!! I truly appreciate you taking the time. So, I shouldnt worry about the button - I was just worried that might come off the mother board……
On the support issue - is that going to be that big of a deal? And by support, I assume you mean if there are phone (hardware issues)…correct?

Hi guys ,just bought the E70.
It is truly a business gadget. However ,when I try to backup with pc suite, at 1% it gives me an error ,like please reconect phone. Is there some how to back up??? thanks

Hi to everytone, and thanks to the webmaster for this usefull site.
Very nice phone this one, but I’ve a lot of problems using wireless capabilities with wLan in WPA mode.
I set up access point group and all options, and nothing happens.
Everything is ok in no-protected wLan.
My question is only related to WPA wlan: when I make a “on the fly search” through some kind of application (like email client), my e61 finds the wpa lan, but when it tries to connect it uses the encrypted-key mode by default, instead of a password mode only. And so the wpa wlan doesn’t give access.
Could I change this, or the only mode to set up an access point is defining an access group?
thanks

I bought yesterday a Nokia E61, following a special interest in its wifi capability.
I have an office in my house with an 802.11 wifi network. Yesterday I experinced the problem that I have read in many cases here. E61 seems to “talk” with my wifi hub (DLINK 2000 AP+ with WEP HEX 64 bits protection) but the cursor on E61 runs without downloading anything in mail or web application. I have browsed around on the phone and I have solved the problem.
It seems to be very simples and that’s what i did:
MENU > SETTINGS > CONNECTIONS
ACCESS POINTS > MY WIFI NETWORK
i filled all things appearing on the lists: (soory, my menu is in italian, I hope to make a good translation)
CONNECTION NAME: NETWORK NAME
DATA BEARER: WLAN
WLAN NAME: in my case is DEFAULT, write yours
NETWORK TYPE: PUBLIC
WLAN NETWORK TYOE: INFRASTUCTURE
WLAN PROTECTION: WEP
and after i wrote WEP HEX KEY, etc etc
arrived at this point the connection downloaded nothing on the phone, even if E61 and DLINK WIFI HUB seemed to change data (lights blinking)
Now my solution (it works here, I hope to hel someone):
ON THE SCREEN WE HAD BEFORE, chose OPTION on th low left corner:
chose ADVANCED SETTINGS
chose IPv4 SETTINGS
and fill all details of
TELEPHONE IP ADDRESS ( In my case is 10.0.0.10), chose yours
SUBNET MASK: write yours, mine is 255.255.255.0
GATEWAY: the address of Your ADSL or network router (mine is 10.0.0.138)
after this you have to fuill the fields of PRIMARY AND SECONDARY DNS, that you surely find (if you have to use them depending on your internet provider) in windows control panel, under NETWORK, PROPERTIES.
NOW IT WORKS !!!!! I use E61 in my house wifi.
I am waiting, now , to have SKYPE for SYMBIAN. If You have info, thanks to inform me.
Thanks for all
Lorenzo

I had another bad experience with my E61. I am able to connect to my linksys broadband router for quite sometime without problem. Recently I just turn on my E61 bluetooth for my headset and the problem of crashing my linksys come back again. Whenever I try to connect by Wifi, my whole network is disrupted. I had to unplug the linksys power to re-gain the network connection. So in the end, I had to turn off the E61 bluetooth in order to be able to work with my linksys router.
Another way I tried is to change the TX power level to 4mW than only it wouldn’t crash my linksys router.
I wonder anyone had this experiences before? Is there a way I can feedback this technical problem to Nokia? In Singapore, there isn’t any nokia forum support,

I purchased an asian import E61. It is configured to some server called Planet 3. I cannot link to opened hotspots. I get the message: Planet 3 No gateway reply. Can this be a corrected, or is this a hardwire issue in the wifi configuration. Help.
October 23rd, 2006 at 7:33 pm
Maral -
You need to go to the ‘Settings’ of your E61 web browser. So, wait until it gives the Planet 3 error - then with the browser still open go: Options > Settings: Access Point (choose ‘Always Ask’) In this way you will be prompted to choose either an Access Point that you have previously set up or ’search for WLAN’. Choosing this last option will scan and give options for any local hotspots that are available to you.
You can also remove the Access Point for Planet 3: Menu > Tools > Settings > Connection > Access Points. You can then remove the Planet 3 access point if it isn’t needed by selecting and hitting the delete button
Hope this helps.

Got my E61 today and really have no wlan problems
Took me some time to figure out the hex setting tho for the 11 digit wep number.
My question: is it possible to have “Mail by exchange” programme connect to a access point _group_ instead of just one access point?
My goal is to have the E61 automatically use my home wlan and the wlan at work to sync when I am there and only connect to the mobile network when there are no wlans available. But I can’t find a way to set it up that way.
October 25th, 2006 at 11:52 am
H/ Thankyou, Being very new to the computer/smart phone world, I just solved my wifi problems thru hours of experimenting. One major error; going to conn manager, instead of web! repeatedly, oh so silly. Second, you must enter an address, under bookmarks, only then can you search for wlan in a hotspot and log on. Deleting all the planet 3 bookmarks was not permanent, until I marked them, and somehow found the option of erasing phone memory—I forget how I got to that. And now a tidbit that someone showed me. Hold the letter o down and you will go straight to bookmarks where you enter an address. I always thought some home page would appear first. I hope this helps someone.

Just figured out wifi with wpa… what a pain! I dont know what the problem was exactly but after I deleted every other access point along with all the preconfigured ones that came with t-mobile, it was fine.
I’m guessing theres some way to specify a connection ordering but I wouldn’t have a clue how!
November 3rd, 2006 at 7:34 pm
CJLN,
You simply have to go into the Nokia Web Application, (if it starts to go to the first access point), cancel, then go to options, setting and for Access Point, set it to always ask. That way depending on what is available in the area you may select the appropriate access point.

I have problems connecting my E61 to a wireless access point using WPA-PSK security with 64 hexadecimal pre-shared key. Unfortunately you can enter only 8 to 63 ascii characters in the PSK field. Anyone found how to deal with this kind of configuration or I have to wait the next firmware?
November 22nd, 2006 at 3:56 pm
Pink, I had the same problem at the beginning… but it was my fault: Airport Express makes you choose between an “ASCII password” or an “HEX key”. Anyway, if you aren’t using an Airport Express and you must use an HEX key on the access point (while on the e61 you can’t choose: ASCII only), just put 64 HEX digits in the access point, then enter the same 64 digits in an HEX2ASCII converter and get the ASCII password for you e61…
Here an example for the converter:
http://www.dolcevie.com/js/converter.html
If this doesn’t fit to you, just search a bit on google for “hex to ascii converter”… (or get an ASCII table with HEX digits, and get the ascii password manually)…

I cannot get a WiFi connection at home for the life of me. Outside of home is no problem.
I have a WRT54G router, connected to Rogers (Canada), no security, MAC Filtering. The router allocates an IP address to the E61 but, when browsing, the browser just churns and finally times out. Any idea’s?
November 28th, 2006 at 2:06 pm
Does anyone know if it’s possible to browse your local network for printers, computers etc. using the E61?
November 28th, 2006 at 5:42 pm
i tried my neighbour’s SMC wireless router and it works fine. naturally his is an open network
but on my WRT54G, it always tells me Web Gateway No Reply or some shit like that. Same prob as yours Glen-Ster?
December 6th, 2006 at 1:01 am
My organization has standardized on AES encryption for the WiFi infrastructure. E70 doesn’t seem to even detect existence of the Wireless LAN.
Does anyone else have similar experience? Does Nokia’s update include the support? (I haven’t yet applied those updates.)

Hi Everyone,
Another ones bites the dust, and this time it’s me. And the one who makes me bite the dust is Nokia E60. I decided to give up after a week of effort. Setting up a Nokia phone for anything is soooo frustrating, more so when you have been using Windows Mobile.

ERROR I GET: No reply from gateway. I can successfully ping my E60.

I may have stumbled across the solution to resolve all these no connection issue. But this will take some testing to get it right. And yes, I tried all mentioned techniques in this forum (turn off power saving, turn off bluetooth, lower power) and none of them worked. Now, I have BT ON all the time and ADVANCED WIRELESS OPTION at default, and everything still works.
On your router setting, change the WIRELESS CHANNEL setting to a different one and test to see if the E70 connects. As I only have 3 routers (Linksys WRT54G, Linksys WRT54G V5 and Compex NetPassage 26G), I can only speak for these routers. Compex 26G and WRT54G worked without doing anything. WRT54G V5 is where I had to change the setting.
Here’s how:
At the main menu of the router config, click on WIRELESS then BASIC WIRELESS SETTING and you will see the WIRELESS CHANNEL option.
I changed mine from channel 6 (because my notebook was not working with Channel 1) to various other channels and finally settle on Channel 8-2.447GHz.
I’ve had to do so since some channel only works with E70 and some only works with the notebook.
Well, I hope this is it. Please do not ask me about any other routers.
So what if the router is not mine? Then I go to another hotspot.

ok!! so i continue to try whatever suggestions i come across. but still no luck. i don’t know what came over me to shift from O2 to Nokia and that too like a fool why should i have bought 2 nokia phones at one go. Beats me.
December 23rd, 2006 at 2:11 am
If it helps anyone - I had the ubiquitous failure to connect to my home WLAN, and the suggestion from PrintMarketing above worked for me. Basically I turned on MAC address filtering and added my E61 manually. Since then, no problems (fingers crossed).

Hi,
I have a Wireless Setup at my Place but i have a proxy which sends all the requests. How do i setup the E61 to access the Web by connecting to the proxy?
December 27th, 2006 at 4:15 pm
I bought the E61 primarily to be able to access my email from public hotspots (I’m on Cingular, and don’t want to buy a data plan… can’t afford it).
Prior to upgrading my firmware (first to v2.xxxx and now v3.0633.09.04, the latest version), I was able retreive email from public hotspots, but not my home network (linksys wrt54gc), where I get the message “No WLAN Network Found”. I didn’t really care because I use my laptop there. Now I get that message no matter where I try to connect from (even the places that used to work). I’m completely baffled.
I’ve tried just about everything posted above (and have made so many changes that now I have no idea what settings worked before. I’m not a techie, and would appreciate it if someone would walk me through the proper settings. Thanks in advance.

Hi all,
I have similar problems with my E61.
My wireless network uses wpa/wpa2 settings, when i apply those settings to my E61 it says that “wpa authentication failed”.
If i disable these wpa/wpa2 settings in my router and do the same on my E61 it works fine.
Btw my laptop IBM T43 connects ok with WPA/WPA2 settings.
any kind of help wil be recieved with gratitude

Hi! Thanks for keeping this website fresh all the time!
My question to everyone who use e61, do you experience the same troubles as described bellow and do you know how to solve those?
1) If you have WIFI and usual mobile internet (GPRS/EDGE/3G) set up correctly in your e61 and use WIFI at least once to connect to the internet, then you will never access internet over mobile connection (not WIFI) until you restart your e61. Does anyone know if there is anything to help me with it, so I’d not need to restart the phone every time I get out of the office or home locations where I have WIFI internet?
2) Does anyone know how to set up WIFI with WPA(2) encryption? Both WEP and WPA work fine for me with the only difference: I can pre-set up WEP connection so that I’d not need to enter the password every time I’d like to connect to the internet, but with WPA(2) I need to enter a password every time I try to connect with a browser, + in a case of any other third party application it will tell that you connect to a network (I select from the pre-set up ones the WPA encrypted) and then it will never ask for a password even, + if your WPA network is hidden, it will not even find it out for you to set up… Does anyone know how to solve these two problems - please write here or let me know how to contact you - I’d be very-very happy to solve this.
NB! I use e61 with firmware 3.xxx…. The problem occures on the current firmware right in the same way it did on firmware 1.xxx….. before I upgraded it. So I know that I do and set up everything correctly (at least I want to hope for it).
Thanks in advance, and
Kind regards,
Valentin

Change “data bearer” to ” Wireless Lan” then enter user name and password.
Hope this helps.

I have an E61 and am finding it incredibly frustrating. I can setup the phone to work with Exchange Server but get asked about trusting a certificate everytime it updates. I can allow it for a while but then it stops responding. I have had umpteen suggestions regarding importing certificates and the like but nothing works. Is there a definitive solution to this or not? If I can’t get it working properly in the next few days I will have to return it..
Also, I can find wireless lans but how on earth do I connect to them. I have entered all the details on our office wlan but how do I actually connect. Clicking on the web icon on the front screen doesn’t show the wlan and the device just tries to connect to Orange everytime…
Any ideas??

to those who claims using E61 wifi through home WLAN is free, cingular made a nonbeliever out of me. i was charged for over $40 for data usage. im still a bit shocked, i called to customer service and was told that i need one of those dumb wireless data plans they have.
i honestly don’t know anymore. everytime when connect on to the internet this past month i specifically made it to ask for available WLAN to connect and not mmode or what have you.
am i doing something wrong in the back end? is there a specific way to set up the wifi network connection on the e61?
if anyone else who has a similar situation and/or know how to solve this rediculous problem of mine please do let me know because like a couple folks here i do believe that if i connect through my OWN WLAN it should be free.
for now here is my plan ‘z’ (haven’t tried it yet) take out the sim card — but that would be really stupid, totally defeats the whole point of having a smartphone (sarcastic laugh). help. (echoes)
thanks for reading

Gaiden,
Cingular is charging you $40/month for data on *their network* in this case GPRS/EDGE.
Cingular is of course going to tell you that you need this wireless data plan. However, if you only want to use the WiFi feature you need no data plan from Cingular.
Call them back, say that you don’t want a data plan. Don’t go in to details and don’t let them talk you into keeping the data plan. You can still use the WiFi functionality and the voice features.

Has anybody managed to solve the problem of connecting an E61 to a Thomson Speedtouch 580? Mine wifi connection works OK when the speedtouch connection is not secured but as soon as I apply the usual WPA-PSK security I get a WPA suthentication error on my E61. I have tried suggestions such as setting the IP/subnet mask/DNS addresses etc, manually entering the E61 MAs address, but without success. How frustrating!!

Hi,
I had used my E61 to connect to a public wifi hotspot in a Starbucks. But, i am not able to connect to my WLAN setup in my uni with my id and password which i am able to connect using my laptop. I run Win XP Promy Notebook. In the XP WLAN setup I can choose WEP key being provided automaticaly. But there is no such option in E61, so, anyone can help?
Thanks!

you have to make sure if your WEP is either in hex or ASCII then enter the appropriate code in its right format.
it can be either 40 or 128 bit hex or ASCII resulting in either a 13 letter or 24 letter word or number.

Do you have some of you trouble with connection through Wi Fi after upgrading to the V3.0633.09.04 version of firmware for E 61.
My Wifi connection works fine for V2.0618 but after I upgraded my phone to V3. I being had problems.
It occurs the following:
1. I use Wlan Wizard to look for points of Wifi.
2. And after I am founding some point and try to connect to Internet I obtain the message that Wlan network doesn’t found.
I am very sad because WiFi is very important for me.
Please If some of you knows about this issue give me advice.
Thank you.
