Sweet, Sweet Music - Internet Radio on Nokia E61

Sweet, sweet music - Internet Radio on Nokia E61

In my eagerness to test out the various applications and features of the Nokia E61 I stumbled across an Open Source project for an Internet Radio client for the Nokia E61. (As with most other software - if it works on the Nokia E61 it should work fine on the other E-Series devices and other devices running S60 3rd edition).

The project consists of two files available for download. The first file is a Shoutcast engine and the other file is the Internet Radio client. It was a cakewalk installing the two files. When you launch the device it will prompt you to choose a radio channel.

The application will start buffering, and depending on whether you use the WLAN or the data network, will start playing in a few seconds or more. I used it both on Cingular's MediaNet (GPRS) and using the WLAN connection. The usability on WLAN is great. There were no interruptions and everything was smooth. However, usability on Cingular's MEdia NET was poor. The sound was "choppy" and the application had to rebuffer time after time. This is of course due to the poor transfer rate I was getting over the network.

The application comes with a few radio stations on the supplied PLS file but it is easy to customize the list of Shoutcast radio stations. Just use Winamp or any other application that can export and handle PLS files and create your own lists of radio stations. Remember to place the PLS file with your list of radio stations in the \shoutcast directory.

You mentioned that you used GPRS with Cingular. Is this because the E-series does not support Cingular’s high speed EDGE network, or because you chose to pay for GPRS instead of EDGE?

  2. admin Says:

Thanks for your comment. I edited the posting to clarify what network I was using. Hopefully it is easier to understand now.
To answer your qquestion - the device supports Edge. I was using Cingular’s MEdia NET.
    Cheers

Have you tried the Podcasting application from Nokia yet? It’s clunky but cool! Would love to see you review it. Google it and you should be able to find it. I think it was originally envisioned for the N91.

  4. admin Says:

    Hi Christopher,
    Thanks for stopping by.
I just posted something about the podcast application. I think the podcast application is sleeker than the Internet Radio application though they both are pretty bare bones. But hey - they are free ;)

  5. JP Says:

Is it difficult to configure the E61 with cingular? I’ve never done the unlocked phone thing.

  6. admin Says:

There is a tool available that will help you “push out” that “standard” settings for any released Nokia phone and any carrier here:
    https://nokiags.wdsglobal.com/standard?siteLanguageId=118
You just enter phone model, country and carrier and the settings will be sent in an SMS message.

It works really well. I have not had any problems using data or telephony on Cingular. However, I haven’t gotten the native IM client to work because those settings are not easily available. However, I am using a different IM client. So to answer your question - it is not hard.

But when you do get an “unlocked” device you cannot contact the carrier for support if needed. I guess that is the price for “freedom” ;-)

I really love this application. It works like a charm over WiFi. Will try to add the http://www.di.fm stations to the playlist!

  9. Manny Says:

I really like this app.. But where the hell is /shoutcast folder? I have searched each and every folder on Nokia E61’s C and E drive.. but can’t find the drop folder for .PLS file :(

    please help…:(

  10. admin Says:

    Hi Manny,
I installed the Internet radio client on my mini SD card so the shoutcast file is on my mini SD card. It is a folder called “shoutcast” and it contains the .PLS file. The folder is not in the application folder of the Internet radio.

Use the “File Manager” in your “Office” folder and do a search for the folder. You can search as one of the functions of file manager.

    I hope that works.

  11. admin Says:

    Hi Rene M.
Let us know how it works adding di.fm. I actually use the E61 quite a lot as my (radio) player.

Hi tried installing the internet radio plug-ins onto my E61, both files gave an “certificate error” contact applicaton supplier…. can you help,

By the way , great website the information you provide regarding the E61 is totally invaluable, thank you

  14. Gordon Edwards Says:

By The way, I fixed the problem…. Regards

  15. admin Says:

    Hi Gordon,
Thanks for your kind words. This could be the issue. For added protection against “malware” there is rather strict application signing procedure implemented for S60 3.0. The device comes with the standard setting to check for proper signatures and will not install if the application sigining is lacking, out of date etc.
    This could be the problem.

Go to Tools > App. mgr > Options > Settings . change “software installation” from “Signed Only” to “All” and “Onlline certic check” to “off”.

This will most likely fix your problem. However, please be aware that you turned off one extra layer of security for the device. I wouldn’t be too worried about malware but it is important to only install software from known sources.

  16. Joel Haspel Says:

Just want to say thanks to everyone. I had the same problem as Gorden “certificate error” and the suggested solution worked. Also had the no shoutcast folder issue when installed on the E61, installation on the mini SD works just fine. Thanks again :)

I cannot get Shoutcast to work. The apps installs fine, but when I run shoutcast I get the message “Could not receive Shoutcast response” err-36

    Do you have any clue?

  19. admin Says:

Have you tried removing the appplication and re-installing it? I haven’t seen that error message before. As a first step I would reinstall the application.

  20. Andrew Says:

    Hi all,
I am having the same problem Manny had about the podcast folder not being found. I installed the application on c: but no luck in locating the folder.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    thx

  21. James Says:

Wow! This is great, it works perfectly on my E60. I even found out that I can install .sis files which have unsigned certificates. After several months of phone ownership I can now have some fun with it. Thank you for providing this information.

  22. Nish Says:

    I cant find the /shoutcast folder! :-(

  23. chumpie Says:

    hi

    i could find shoutcast.pls with Y-Browser.

    c:/shoutcast/

  24. Neelsen Says:

Nish, this is normal (S60 3rd, N80). Due to some bug, if you choose to install ShoutcastEngine on your internal memory, then you won’t find any \shoutcast folder (it’s probably there, but invisible or something). Unfortunately, you need to install ShoutcastEngine on a memory card to be able to add stations.

Well, you can install ShoutcastEngine on your internal memory, but then you have to create the \Shoutcast folder yourself on the external memory card and the app copies the .pls files in the \Shoutcast folder to its list and you will have duplicates of each. You don’t want that.

  25. Shawn Says:

Can’t get to the files….Is the opensource site dead? Can someone repost the files?

  26. admin Says:

    Shawn,
The whole Nokia Opensource site seems to be down. Check again in a day or so.

  33. Bo Says:

so i just placed a PLS file under shoutcast directory but the stations in my playlist are not displayed in the internet radio…only the ones that came with the installation are there…any idea what’s happening?

  34. Bo Says:

actually I found the links, but unable to play any of them…getting an error message that it can’t connect. The links are valid and work on the PC….any idea?

  35. sam Says:

you have to rename the .txt files as .pls, and then put them in the shoutcast folder in your memory card.
as far as the error connecting, that will happen sometimes because the channel is full so you have to try again later,(this is why the original .pls for each channel has different links pointing it to the same channel) even though there are a few channels I have never been able to connect.. (I havent had a chance to look into this yet)

  36. Heinz Says:

Only after about 4 minutes of loading I get one radiostation to play for about ten seconds and then it is off again saying “buffering” . Can anyone help ? Thanks in advance

  37. Suliman Says:

    Hi,

1st thank you for this software, but i have a problem that i have change the Station file to .pls, then i put it in the (\shoutcast), i have tried both way’s to play it fist the Station list (My Station is not there), then i changed the Mode to File Player but in the case i am getting this error (Playinit Error=-5).

    Thanks in Advance.

  38. william Says:

what shoutcast folder? this is crap. i’ve installed it twice now to phone mem and no folder. i can’t even see what apps are installed on the phone manager on the pc.

  39. Steve Robertson Says:

    Good afternoon William,

You will need to install the application to the memory card, to enable you to see the shoutcast folder.

  40. Bleckie Says:

I did it according to Steve’s advice. It does not work, i can’t see the directory on my E60

  41. Bleckie Says:

I found a solution in the meantime: i installed The Y-Browser and can see not only the directory and the shoutcast file with the radio stations, but other hidden directories as well. Can also copy it to a different location and access it with the notes application. Still have to figure out how to transfer predefined file from XP PC to my E60 and vice versa Will report as soos as i have a solution! MAbe sombody has already a solution on hand! Good luck and glad to hear from you!

  42. E50 Says:

Playlist HowTo for those with no mem card:

    0.1) install Y-Browser
    1) use Y-Browser to copy c:/shoutcast/shoutcast.pls to eg.c:/Data/Documents
    2) transfer that to PC with PC-suite
    3) edit playlist
    4) transfer back to eg. Documents
    5) use Y-Browser to copy your new c:/Data/Documents/shoutcast.pls to c:/shoutcast directory
    5) open InternetRadio and browse your new list
    6) enjoy

  43. Anatol Says:

Thank you very very much, its working!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  44. Jesse Says:

Hello! I don’t have an e61 / e62 yet, but I’m strongly considering getting one (Cingular/US). I’m really interested in getting Internet Radio working if I get one, but I have to make sure one particular streaming radio station works.

Perhaps someone who has this tool setup on their e61/e62 can test the stream I want to use and let me know if it works? The website is http://www.woxy.com and they offer both MP3 and AAC+ streams. I don’t know if they’re shoutcast or what though.

Can someone check the streams on their e61/e62 and let me know if they work? Thanks SO much!

FYI here are the direct stream links from the site:

    MP3 - http://woxy.lala.com/stream/mpg64.pls
    aacPlus - http://woxy.lala.com/stream/aac32.pls

You can open the pls files in notepad and get the specific URLs I think.

  45. Teelio Says:

I’ve been banging away for 5 hours now, and simply cannot get any playlists imported into the E61. I downloaded Winamp, which simply does not allow me to drag a net radio station to a playlist, or in any other way copy it to a playlist. (Winamp, for me, is a dreadful and non-intuitive interface, by the way–why does it not perform basic functions like playlist building.)

So I tried iTunes, built the playlist of net radio stations I wanted, exported that playlist as simple text, unicode text, and .xml, tried changing the suffix to .pls. The PC sees all of these as Winamp playlists, but none of them open, even on the PC. And no matter what I do, none of these show up on the E61.

I’ve tried using the Y-browser workaround, using file manager on the E61 and the PC—nothing. I’ve installed the Internet Radio and Shoutcast plugins both on the phone memory and the 2 GB Mini SD. Nothing nothing nothing.

I love the software, and have easily gotten the pre-loaded stations to tune in just fine. Something tells me it’s likely a Winamp issue. (Have I mentioned yet that Winamp blows?) Is there a way to do this through iTunes?

Not being a Symbian (or other) programmer, could someone please provide the comprehensive, EXACT steps to create and import the playlist into an E61? (”Edit the playlist,” for example, has not been helpful.)

Thanks guys, this blog is a wealth of information.

  46. NJNGuy Says:

I have a Cingular E62 and have used the internet radio application for almost two months. It works great with the channels available from http://www.sky.fm and I get my NPR fix from the WPSU station that’s on the application’s original list.

I tried the woxy.com links (above) and although I could save the .pls files to my phone, the application gave me an error when I tried both links: “Error connecting to server. Err=-28.” BTW, I couldn’t get them to stream from my home computer either.

As far as building a list of stations, I surf to the website using the E62’s web browser and click on the site’s link for the music stream I want. That downloads a .pls file to the phone and I save it in the Shoutcast folder on my phone’s miniSD card. I then close the web browser and start up the internet radio app, which scans for all .pls files and adds them to its roster.

Because the E62 only has GPRS/EDGE (no WiFi), I have to stick with low bitrate streams, like 24Kbps. That also reduces the need for re-buffering. Right now I listen using the built-in speaker, so mono streams are fine.

  47. NJNGuy Says:

The other thing I’ll point out about the internet radio application on my Cingular E62 is that the phone reboots when I exit the application or it will reboot on it’s own after anywhere from seven minutes to two hours of playing. I’m not running any other applications, so it has all the system memory to itself.

    Anyone else having this problem?

  48. Cirrus Says:

I have had no luck at all with this application on a E62. I have a 1g MiniSD, installed both files to it. I chose the S60 3rd edition applications. I try to run the application, I chose the station, it attempts to connect, then finds nothing, or just crashes. If I restart my phone after installing, it will just never load after trying to launch it. I tried re-installing it 3 times. It has never made the actual phone reboot liek the previous poster.

  49. NJNGuy Says:

Cirrus - did you install the S60 3rd Ed _.SISx_ files on your E62? Did you use the Nokia PC Suite to do the install? Are you on the Cingular service? Did you select MEdia Net as the access point when prompted?

More than half of the stations on the application’s default list don’t connect for me. The WPSU link does.

Teelio - Each of the stations I choose on http://www.sky.fm puts its own .pls file on my memory card; I don’t have one .pls file with multiple stations. However, a single .pls file may create multiple listings in the application’s station roster, each having a unique http address.

  50. Kevin Says:

    Help!
I’m trying to get access to shoutcast internet radio. I downloaded both files onto my SD card and made sure the software installation was set to “all” & “off” but when I try to run the program - it only stays in a “connecting “mode then eventually displays an “error - =33 could not connect with server” What am I doing or not doing wrong?

  51. NJNGuy Says:

A poster over at the Cingular Nokia forum, TWCCEO, came up with a workaround for the E62 reboot on exiting the Internet Radio app.

    He writes:
Everyone is complaining (myself included) about how Nokia’s Internet Radio causes their phone to warm REBOOT when exiting the program. I found this workaround and since then my phone has not crashed once.
This is what I did. When you get ready to shut down Nokia Internet Radio, click on the “OPTIONS” button (The Left Soft Key). You will then see the option to “STOP”. Select this. Now, instead of selecting the Right Soft Key that is showing (EXIT) select the END Key (red key) that will take you to your desktop. Your phone should not crash or Reboot at this time.

  52. Garrett Says:

Hey guys, i love the internet radio stations, everything works great until i exit the application and it crashes my e62 everytime. anyone know how i can fix this?

only problem would be getting it to work on gprs and the cost involved in running it , otherwise if u r constantly around wifi networks at work r home , very useful application , if any one has any more doubts abt creating a playlist , leave a msg , will try to explain it step by step , thnx again for the nice site

  56. psycros Says:

On a normal (i.e. “locked”) Cingular E62, your outta luck. Apparently Cingular has locked this thing down to where 99% of Symbian apps you try to install are rejected due to a “certificate error”. If you go into the Settings>Config>Sercurity, you can disable cert checks for everything…EXCEPT Symbian. You can click on that dreaded “All” entry till your finger is sore and it will never change. LOL, thanks for crippling a great phone, Stinkular..I definately won’t be renewing my contract.

  57. NJNGuy Says:

    Psycros -

Not sure what your problem is. I’m using the Internet Radio app on a stock, locked Cingular E62 I bought from them four months ago.

I found the shoutcast folder by doing a search on my E65, but how do you add a playlist created from winamp to that folder? The default playlist file shows in the search and even opens, but I cannot edit that nor add another playlist file to the shoutcast directory as this dierctory is not visible on the computer through explorer. Please help

  59. Brett Says:

Help! I have installed the radio player on my e61 but I have NO IDEA how to load extra stations onto it. None. I have a Mac. I went to Shoutcast. I clicked on stations I liked the sound of. Each time a *.pls file appeared on my desktop. So for 10 stations I have 10 *.pls files. I am assuming that is wrong. I sent one to my e61 via bluetooth but could only open it on the phone as a text file. Help. Very basic step by step instructions needed!

  60. iberico Says:

    Brett

I am not a mac user but it should work the same. on your card you should find shoutcast an inside the playlist. Copy the playlist onto your computer and open it with notepad or similar. There you shall see the http:// for the stations eg: http://62.4653.867. ….. All you need to do is to replace/insert a new address with your favourite station.

Or you can download a playlist I made for myself and replace it on your memory card. Here is the link:

    http://rapidshare.com/files/24566912/shoutcast.pls.html

I hope you have 3G as my selection includes statuions at 128kb/s
    All the best.

    Hi All,
I have a nokia e62 and when I try to install either application I get a file corrupt message. I changed the settings and it actually goes thru a copule of steps before I get the file corrupt message. any ideas

  62. NJNGuy Says:

    Re: playlist files
You can have multiple .pls files in your shoutcast folder - just make sure they’re not named the same. For instance, my E62 has 12 .pls files with names like classical_low.pls, newage_low.pls, play.pls, etc. The Internet Radio application will scan all the .pls files and show you a complete list of stations while running the program.
Unless you understand how .pls files are coded, don’t edit them. There is a relationship between certain values within the file that can’t be modified.
You don’t need to open the .pls file, IRadio the application does that.

    Re: can’t see shoutcast folder
I’m running Windows XP and Nokia PC Suite 6.82.22. When I launch the Suite’s File Manager, I can see my shoutcast folder and the .pls files on the miniSD card inside my E62.

    Re: IRadio and the Mac
I’m not aware of a Nokia PC Suite for the Mac and E62. If you already have installed the IRadio app and now all you want to do is put .pls files on the handset, get a miniSD card and put the .pls files in a folder named \shoutcast on that card. You can either do that externally with a card reader or internally using the USB cable and setting the handset to “Data Transfer” when you connect the cable.

    Re: file corrupt message
Make sure you are using the latest Nokia PC Suite program with the E62, not the one that came on the CD with the phone. Download it from nokiausa.com. Completely uninstall the old Suite program before installing the latest one. Use the USB cable rather than bluetooth to do your installs. If you are installing the IRadio application onto a miniSD card, make sure you have a good one. Some users report file corruption issues with PQI brand cards. Otherwise, install the IRadio app into the phone’s memory.

    any help!? thanks

  72. Gulikoza Says:

joergvader, your the best! Anyone has problems with N73, this is the way to make the install.

  73. [CZ]Honza Says:

solution for problems like error -28 and etc..
I’ve N80 and I had the same problem. As far as I invented the problem is with the DNS, because this internet radio can’t work with dns names like http://scfire-chi0l-2.stream.aol.com:80/stream/1074
    ===
    Server: Firehose Ultravox/SHOUTcast Relay Server/Linux v2.5.1
    Content-Type: audio/mpeg
Stream name: .977 The Hitz Channel
Current title: Carrie Underwood - Before He Cheats
    ===
    so the only solution is:
    1) get shoutcast.pls from your phone
    2) go to winamp and start playing your favourite channel, you gonna get something like 10 servers (mirrors) with this kind of music channel so choose one server (or two for backup) and now you must get its ip address :)
    3) I’ll show it on an example:
you’ve chosen .977 The Hitz Channel [btw it's TOP500 in winamp]
and now choose one of those 10 servers ok lets get #5 - right click on this server and choose ‘View file info’ in this particular case you’re lucky you gonna get something like ‘http://205.188.215.230:8002′ what is great and you can put it directly into shoutcast.pls which you got previously from your phone ;)
ok but what if you get something like http://scfire-dll0l-2.stream.aol.com:80/stream/1074
(btw. it’s server #7) you have to get it’s IP address manually (as I mentioned above - this ‘S60 Internet Radio’ can’t resolve DNS names) so how to do it?
    very easily:
In your windows environment click ’start’ then ‘run’ and type cmd hit ENTER and then type [!! remember without http:// and without anything after it's internet suffix (.com)] example: ping scfire-dll0l-2.stream.aol.com you gonna get it’s IP address: 64.236.99.42
and that’s your ’shoutcast.pls’ address :) so the link is NOT: http://scfire-dll0l-2.stream.aol.com:80/stream/1074 as mentioned above - ‘S60 Internet Radio’ can’t handle it! so you’ve to replace scfire-dll0l-2.stream.aol.com with it’s IP address which you got above (64.236.99.42) so the link is like this:
    http://64.236.99.42:80/stream/1074

and that’s it! put it in your ’shoutcast.pls’ save it upload to your phone and ready to go ;)

    Hope it helped someone ;)

    N75 -

I was able to get this to work on a Cingular N75. The non-intuitive “trick” to uploading my own customized playlist turned out to be the same as mentioned previously: using the device file-browser of your choice, create a new folder in the root directory of your memory-card named “shoutcast”, and copy your playlist there. When you next launch the app, it will pick up that playlist and incorporate it.

I have unlimited MediaWorks on the N75’s UMTS and it works well, when it gets a solid connection. There are the typical occasional dropouts, and I am perennially suspicious that AT&T is using “traffic shaping” on streaming network connections.

    Hi,

Wonderfull app, if I just could get it beyond the 10 sec play before it stalls on me in buffering.

I’m using wLan encrypted with WPA preconfigured key. Could that be it? Anyone has an idea how to fix?

  76. Alvin Says:

    Hello,

I cannot get the application to work. I get an expired certificate. I have gone to the app manger under options and did what you said in the blog, but it is still not working. All applications are allowed with no certificate checking. Any idea how to fix it?

  77. Tony Says:

Expired certificate fix is different to invalid certificate errors (which the application manager settings resolve)

To fix this simply change the date in date/time to 2006 reinstall the application and remember to change date back afterwards !!!!

As a thank you please feel free to email your pls files to me at pkaboo@hotmail.co.uk to save me the hard work of creating them myself

    :D :D :D :D

  78. Oliver - Berlin - Germany Says:

The Certificate thing I solved in the above way.
Nevertheless it is usefull to give this program all rights to:
    - User Account read/write !!
    - Camera rights !!
    - open networking
    - do calls !!
and other senseful things that easy open the door to a lot of spyware.

Somebody could progam it the way that they see you in front of the camera, dial very expensive numbers, copy all your account data etc.

    Just my 5ct
    Regards Oliver

Or are the stations mentioned above pre-installed (by default) being international ones (american or british) ?
i desperatly need to catch national radiowaves to follow up the Euro2008 match comments on the phone, please!

Hi, anyone i have an idea of “playint error=-5 for internet radio?

    kindly advice…

    Thanks,

  81. Sherri Says:

I am getting installation of ShoutcastEngine_30.SISx not supported. All 4 versions (Shoutcast & Internet Radio both SIS and SISX) I see the same message.

I have an unlocked E61 attempting to install via PC Suite. I have already setup “software installation” to All and “Online cert check” to off.

I got the files from the Nokia site which BTW is only available via search engine. Going to opensource.nokia.com and attempting to drill down through the site to the projects page, all of the project links have been removed pointing you to the main opensource.nokia.com page. It’s almost as if they are discouraging people from downloading any of the files.

I am thinking maybe the files themselves are not working on their site. Anyone have these files they can send me? swyche at gmail.com

  82. mahuyar Says:

The apps are no longer available. :( Has the site been moved to a new address?

  83. ellka Says:

thanks for all the info. esp the error -28 details.

I’m using internet radio on an e61i with no memory card. y-browser to replace updated shoutcast.pls
definitely can not have multiple playlists using it this way, maybe working off of a memory card.

to get the ip address on a mac:
I’ve successfully in some cases, looked up stations on shoutcast.com, clicked on listen button which opened the stream in itunes where I was able to get info and get the url. even some stations which are already listed in itunes’ radio list, but with dns, came into itunes from shoutcast with ip address.

otherwise, to get any server’s ip address, I just need to ping the server? (I’m on a mac, so can’t exactly follow your directions, but can figure it out.)

Hi,please help and guide me on how to install a radio to nokia E6.

  89. E61 Says:

I cant seem to hear anything after getting thr internet radio to play. Plz help?

  90. E61i Says:

This business of not being able to write to the c:\shoutcast folder on an E61i makes this app a disappointment. Surely the app should store the data in a sensible (browsable & editable) place? On an E61i this is clunky to the point of unusable, even with the Y-Browser workaround

    What a shame

  91. Another E61i Says:

Unfortunatly the shoutcast.pls file does not resolve hostnames to IP addresses. You have to refer to shoutcast hosts by IP address.

Side volume keys on E61i don’t work - cursor work ok though.

Would be fantastic if application allowed you to edit a playlist. Transferring from a PC is messy.

Nice principal though. Keep going Nokia.
