Nokia E62 - Unboxing

This morning I went to my local Cingular store to pick up my pre-ordered Nokia E62. The price was $149 with a new contract with Cingular. It was a good thing I made Cingular set aside a device for me - I got the very last Nokia E62 they had in the store.

It is way too early to review the Nokia E62 but stay tuned. I will try to drill down through the differencies between the Nokia E61 and the Nokia E62. I don't plan to give up my trusted Nokia E61 but for the near term I plan to make the Nokia E62 my main device.

Here are the obligatory unboxing pictures of the Nokia E62.

Nokia E62 comes in a bright, Cingular-Orange Box.

The first difference I noticed is that the included headset seems a bit nicer than the one that came with the E61. In addition, the sync cable is mini USB instead of the standard POP-port.

The device also comes with Cingular specific CD and manual. I think the manual is better than the one for the Nokia E61. At least, it is more colorful and includes many screenshots.

Is there any chane we can expect to get the IM configuration to use on the E61?? Does the E62 have have the native IM function??

I have also noticed that the pop port on my E61 is going black and I am having connection problems. I assume the mini usb handles all comms.

    thanks

    Hi Activity,
It’s a tough choice - I really think they (Cingular and T-mobile) are pretty much the same. I have used both but now I am with Cingular. I don’t think I will miss the WiFi that much - we’ll see. I might be wrong.

    Hi John,
I plan to write more about IM and one of the reasons I got the Nokia E62 was to get a good IM experience. The device comes with a built in client that is provisioned. There are no server settings available so there’s nothing I can share. More information to come..

    Cheers!

  4. TT Says:

I like the idea Nokia put mini usb+headset jack instead of pop-port.

  5. Daniel Says:

I’m happy to see you got it :D I hope you get much joy from this device. Congrats to the buy mate.

  6. eastsidebiz Says:

Hey can you also tell us what version the firmware is? And hows the mulstitasking? Ive been having the E61 for a while now and it really annoys me how it would close my running application in the background when the system cant handle it..it usally happens when I use the WEB browser that has big images or pop up windows. Though it hardly does that using Opera. By the way, I came across this program called JonnyChat and its a client for AIM works well, I use it instead of agile and IM+, and a substitute to the non working IM client in the E61.

  7. activity Says:

how is the music playback on the E62? does it suffer the same setbacks as on the E61… Also , what is the firmware version ?

  8. Thimo Says:

Is it true that the e62 does not have WIFI and 3G???

  9. Trat Says:

Too bad it’s branded and it lacks WiFi…

  10. Charles Knight Says:

Hopefully a ramification of this will be some software development for the e-series - because software is still thin on the ground.

  11. admin Says:

    Hi Thimo,
Yes, the E62 is the E61’s younger brother and has a subset of the E61’s features. WiFi and 3G was removed, to lower the cost I assume.

  12. Timesplitter88 Says:

Ordered mine a couple of days ago via Cingular Premier :D question, is it true that it has a standard 3.5mm headphone jack or is it proprietary?

  13. Antonio Says:

Congrats on your purchase, now you can mod one of these babies into a blue casing

  14. Lyle Says:

    Hi Ed,

I believe they removed the WiFi not only for cost but for profit too. If you don’t have WiFi, you don’t have free web browsing AND you don’t have VoIP either. This translates into more airtime for the carrier and bigger bills for the user.

I use the WiFi extensively at home to check my email (personal and business) since I have no cell coverage where I live

Another issue is the lack of usability if you ever plan to travel outside the US which I sometimes do. I will be going to Turkey, Greece and Italy around 10/19. I’ll share my E61 international roaming experiences from the road once there.

  15. Matt Says:

Can you give me the settings for cingulars Data (please) … I tried to set it up using nokias site but it doesnt connect. I have the E61 and want to make sure I am connecting at the best speed (I have the unlimited data plan)
    thanks so much

  16. agwe23 Says:

Ed, e62? why? why? WHY? hehehe gotta love the absence of pop ports though. is the miniUSB connection still USB1.1?

  17. admin Says:

Ha ha ha :-) I’m not selling my E61, no way. I just want to experience what it is like to get a “localized” device. I do like the absence of the pop port!

  18. Matt Says:

Ed, please can you give me the settings for DATA on cingular :)
    thanks

  19. Justin Says:

Hey Matt, I have an E61 on Cingular and just had to put in my SIM card and it defined the Cingular MediaNet and Cingular MMS networks for me. I’m not sure what you mean by using Nokia’s website.

  20. NickyNickyNicky Says:

Am I missing the Obvious here…please help…and feel free to Totally Make Me Feel Like an Idiot. I just purchased the New Nokia E62 and have finally made the jump to combine my Cell Phone and PDA. Having gone through 3 PDA’s (Handspring, Clie, Axim) I’ve adapted to all OS’s. However, this Symbian one is quite new to me and I’m not sure where my question falls.
I loaded the xpress mail GMAIL service and have successfully connected to my gmail account. However, each time either the ‘Push’ occurs for I just check for new emails, all my previous emails are dissappearing or being deleted. Am I missing the Bigger Picture Here?
    Thanks in Advance,
    Nicky

What is the command to perform a Hard reset on a Nokia E62?

*#7370# applies to the E61 only and not the E62.

    Anybody knows?

    Thanks

  23. admin Says:

*#7370# works on the E62 as well. It will restore the factory default settings (and wipe off all your personal data).
    I did a restore this morning ;-)

    questions re cingular

    1) guy in store says there’s no headset with the phone. i see it in picture, is he wrong?
    2) I have been trying to figure out what is the cheapest unlimited data plan,
either blackberry personal, pda connect or smartphone package. cingular claims this is not a smartphone and doesn’t seem to offer the full range of blackberry connect plans. the cheapest I see are in the $39-$44 range on top of the voice plan. is there a cheaper way thru cingular?
    3) what about the plans that are limited — how fast do you use up 20MB, say, if you only check email, IM or surf web on it once or twice a day? a sucker’s bet?
    3) i really do think this is a fantastic phone at a great price point, even without the wif/fi but I’m wondering if I should return it within 30 days. what could i expect to pay for an unlocked e61 and is there a way to make it work on the cingular network?

this is a great web site, I’d love to see some kind of walk thru tutorial on how to figure out what cingular plans are best, pluses and minuses, because cingular’s web site is unhelpful and the staff people on phone and in stores have seemed clueless so far. i can’t wait to actually try out some of the apps and so on here and thanks especialy for info on making it work with a mac

  25. admin Says:

    Hi,
    1. He’s dead wrong. The supplied headset is pretty nice. Yes, you can see it in the picture.
    2. This is a tricky one. I have two SIM cards, one that I got when I bought the Nokia E62. They said the same to me “blah blah blah you can’t buy the MEdia Connect Plans or the “smartphone plans” so they stuck it to me with a $44/month plan. HOWEVER, the MEdia connect will of course work with the device - it is just that in their eyes $$$ they want to sell you the more expensive plan.
    3. It’s really hard to say - depends so much on usage. 20 MB could be enough.
    4. Nokia E61 works on the Cingular network out of the box, however 3G is not supported on Cingular - different frequency.

    Cheers

  26. rm Says:

3G is supported by Cingular in a limited number of handsets, and is available in only certain areas. http://www.cingular.com/3G.

  27. PME Says:

*#7370# and then press the “green” call button right? I get “requesting” and then “Request Not Complete”… any other ideas?

  28. BH Says:

Same thing with me, how do we restore this thing?

  29. LO Says:

Don’t hold down the shift key in the lower left hand corner while you’re typing in the code. You get the same characters when you hold down shift, but the phone won’t reset as expected.

  30. Chris Nalley Says:

Trying the hard reset as well. I get the same thing as PME. Also tried the 3 key salute I read somewhere else of Green Call button, 3 and * and power off then power on. No luck. I’m trying to reinstall a botched attempt at Good Link and getting errors. Want to hard reset to try again.

  31. Ryan Says:

Chris, BH, PME - I cant reset either. When do you type in the code? Like dialing a number and then send? When I do this I also get the Request Not Complete response. the Green, 3, * combo doesn’t work for me either. Very frustrating as Mail for Exchange just stopped working and now I cant get email…

  32. Ryan Says:

Never mind, just got it to work with the *#7370# code. No need to hit send as right after your code is entered it starts the reset process.

  33. Michael Says:

You guys (and gals) rock! Great advice for another puzzling Goodlink re-install… Thanks!

  34. Mike Says:

How about a ‘lock code’ for the reset? I’ve been having all sorts of fun installing the Exchange Client. I can connect and sync the first time I install, but no ‘connection’ from that point forward. I suspect a certificate issue from my Exchange server.

  35. Dennisi Says:

I wish the e62 had wifi, but i am happy with it for the most part, I have cingular and an unlimited data plan. There are very few truly stylish themes, most of which found on this website, THANK GOD!

I’d love to get a set of unlock codes though…

  36. LBU Matt Says:

Hi guys, I have a strange symptom with one of the E62’s in my company. We’ve got an exchange server and ActiveSync for exchange running on our E62’s. The owner of one of these phones is experiencing this: When he creates a calendar entry via Outlook Web Access and then synchronizes his E62 with the exchange server, the copies of the calendar object is put into the phone with incorrect times. We’ve checked the phone’s home time zone and the settings with the phone’s calendar to ensure that the calendar is using the phone’s home time zone settings. I’ve looked around on the inernet and found no mention in blogs or otherwise of any simellar issues. Any thoughts?

  37. aleph Says:

hey all, just purchassed the e62 on ebay, and despretly need an unlocking code…. can anybody help?
    thanx

  38. megamo Says:

    Hi,

I just picked up an e62, the calendar sync function does not import calendar notes from outlook, any comments or recomendations to facitliate this, thanks

Hi! I really like your site! It’s so informative and easy to navigate around! I’d like to ask you a question and didn’t know where to put it so here goes…can I use the e62 in the Philipppines with a local carrier from there if I get an unlock code?
    Thanks!

  40. admin Says:

    Hi Jan,
The Nokia E62 is a quad band gsm so it will work in the Philippines.
    Cheers

  41. Jan Says:

I thought as much but I was just wondering why Nokia didn’t release the e62 in the Philippines which led me to wonder if it will work in that region. Well, thanks! I’ll be visiting regularly here :-)

  42. Kglyons Says:

For those still interested… hard reset is as stated, and the Lock Code is 12345. Good luck, and thanks for the great site!

  43. TerranFreak Says:

    Hi Guys,

I am new to the smartphone world. I currently have T-Mobile but I don’t like the Dash because it doesn’t work well with Macs. So, I am looking to get the E62 through Cingular. As you know, the Iphone is about to be released and so I don’t want to switch over to Cingular because there might be some Iphone deals for new customers ( I am not too optimistic about this though). So my question is..Can I use an E62 or E61 on T-Mobile’s network? Would it work if I unlock it or is it just not possible? Also, can someone comment on their experience with E62 and Macs? Thanks a lot for your help and sorry if the questions are too elementary.

  44. Steven Buehler Says:

It will be a cold day in hell when Apple gives a product discount; you WILL pay full price for the iPhone whether or not you’re a new customer. They have put very tight reigns on its sale.

The E62 is compatible with Apple’s iSync over both Bluetooth and the USB cable. I have a used one coming in the mail in the next day or so and will let you know how it goes. I expect it will be similar to the 6620 that I used to have working with OS X.

  45. TerranFreak Says:

Thanks for the info Steven. I can currently buy the E62 from Cingular through this special offer they have on their website and they will let you buy the phone without signing up for a plan.(T-Mobile has no such offer)…I was hoping to buy the phone from Cingular and use it with T-Mobile. I was wondering if I would have to unlock the phone before using it with T-Mobile. I know its an odd question but has anybody had any experience with this.

    Thanks for you help
