Nokia E62

As I mentioned in yesterday's post, here is a close-up of the connectors of the Nokia E62. Bye, bye Pop-Port and welcome Mini-USB. I'm also happy to see that the Nokia E62 uses a "standard" headset jack.

Another improvement in my mind is that there is one more customizable key on the Nokia E62 - the "Own" key. This key can be assigned as a shortcut to launch any application.

Please let us know how IM application is and what the settings are for Cingular so I can input in my E61

  2. Antonio Says:

I wonder if in the US we have any other devices that have a pop-port most commonly all devices have some sort of USB connector.

  3. Alex Says:

I wonder if I can d/l the BB Connect software for E62 onto my E61. The download page states that the firmware required is of later version than the what is available for E61.

  4. Daniel Says:

That Own-button looks very nice. Now, which app. did you make a shortcut to? ;)

  5. mjsoft Says:

I am new to Symbian OS phones and just upgraded to the Nokia E62 with cingular. Are there any email clients that will connect to the Exchange Server and sync up the sub folders as well? The one they have only gets to your INBOX. Please advise.

  6. Mirko Grewing Says:

AFAIK E62 should not have UMTS but only GSM, is it right?

  7. agwe23 Says:

the first pic looks white. the E62 is available in white!!! :)

  8. jonathan Says:

Now, if only we could add Wifi to the e62…

  9. trat Says:

    @ jonathan
    Buy a E61…

  10. Andy Says:

    … Then we can name it… E61!

  11. admin Says:

    Hi MJSOFT,
The current version of Mail For Exchange doesn’t support syncing sub folders. I don’t think RoadSync supports this either.

  12. Jay Says:

The biggest shame is the E62 doent support UMTS. This would be one of the best phones out there (period) if it did. Even without the WiFi this phone is polished and well thoughtout at every turn. I almost want to get one to give my E61 a new friend to play with :)

  13. Kalel Says:

I will admit that I don’t know why it was done, but regardless, I still think it is a waste to remove WiFi and UMTS. Cutting out the WiFi makes it a weaker competitor to the other smartphones available in the US. I personally don’t see the benefit of the “own” key, but I guess some people find that more useful than WiFi. I Love my E61 and now I am going to have to explain that it is an E61 rather than the feature-lacking E62.

  14. Ron Marshall Says:

It seems the client on the E62 was made by Oz software. Nokia USA or Cingular don’t seem to be able to extract it from the image for distribution. I think the only way is to pull it off the E62 and copy it to the E61. But this is different program than the installed IM application on the E61.

  15. Ron Marshall Says:

Sorry, the last comment was in reference to the installed IM application on the E62.

  16. Marc Says:

From the picture it seems that the E62 is smaller than the E61. Is it really the case?

  17. Marc Says:

I am torn between the E61 and the E62. Would be helpful to have a list of differences between the 2?

  18. admin Says:

    Hi Marc,
The Nokia E62 and E61 is the exact size:

A few of the differences are:

    Nokia E62:
Is Cingular branded in the US and therefore only works with Cingular (in the US).
Doesn’t have built in WiFi or 3G
Does have a working IM client bundled with the device
Uses Mini-USB and standard headset jack
Is supported in the US by Cingular

In short I would say, if WiFi is very important and you plan to use the device in Europe (from time to time) where you can enjoy 3G then you should consider Nokia E61.

If you are more of an “average” user (nothing bad here….) then I think the E62 is a better choice. You will get a device that is supported for the North American market.

Anyone else care to share their opinion?

    Ed

  19. spaceman3 Says:

I’m thinking about giving up the E61 and getting the E62. I was really intereted in the Wifi, but it barely works on my phone and it’s just frustrating. Yeah, the UMTS would have been nice, but I’d rather have a phone that fully works and can be taken seriously by a warranty here in the states. I don’t have anyone to call about my E61 problems.

  20. Cyberdog Says:

The E61 and the E62 are the same size. The E61 has a slightly darker color on the top portion vs the silver of the E61. Neither one is available in White as far as I am aware…

  21. Sunny Says:

    Hello,

Sorry if i am posting to the wrong area. But i am new to this blog as I am to my new E62 that i got last week.

So i was setting it up with my personal gmail, and when i connected via internet, all my emails came into 1 box. I mean i only had about 12 emails in my account, and after it was done there was over 200!!!. good thing i was only getting headers. So i think it received all my archived emails.

So I need to know if it is poosible just to get my inbox pulled down, is there a seperate client i need?

Thanks in advance…. and again sorry if i posted in the wrong area.

    :)

  22. pk Says:

Nice mini USB, too bad theres no wifi and VOIP

  23. eastsidebiz Says:

I hate having the smae phones as other people, now I want to get rid of my E61 and move on to another one now that E62 has taken over. Doesnt anybody else feel the same when they see someone having the same thing as you? I dont know maybe I just like being individual. Anybody agree? In other hand I think the E62 is great :)

  24. bt888 Says:

Based on my E62 training from Nokia USA, the 2.5mm jack is not a standard audio jack. It looks like one but requires a Nokia headset as the phone looks for the software on the headset (that’s what the trainers said). So the only two things I found the E62 to be better than the E61 is the increased internal memory and the miniUSB connector.

  25. admin Says:

    bt888,
Thanks for information. I have to try out the device with a different headset.
    Cheers

  26. joeinfulleffect Says:

for anyone thats interested, i have the N80 currently (parted with my e61 to get it) but miss the qwerty so badly im selling it and getting the e61 back. HOWEVER! one of my favorite features of the N80 was the POPPORT nokia headset that comes with the N80. Not only is it briliantly designed with its built in lanyard (great for running, or even just keeping the buds from being jerked out of your ears) but its also very nice to have conversations in stereo. Much easier to focus on what the wife has to say when you may be in a distracting environment ;o) i know its won some points for me when i was in busy areas down town. This headset should be available through nokia or ebay. Just had to point out another ADVANTAGE of the pop port only available on e61.

PS in my country Rogers is the carier for the e62, and if cingular is anything like them, you can look forward to rediculous data charges with out your wifi to pull full emails/websites/plan routes with google maps etc etc.
and as for warrenty or service, good luck getting help from ANYONE at either company on technicalities of symbian, or any service for damaged phones where you wont pay through the nose for a new one anyway.

hope my rant helps a little. or at least makes you feel a little more comfortable if you’re feeling unsure of your e61 purchase.

    cheers

  27. joeinfulleffect Says:

… on a fun little coincidental sidenote it looks like i’ll be downloading dictionary 2.0 (post much appreciated) after reviewing some of the spelling in my rant… lol

  28. admin Says:

    LOL. :-)
Thanks for sharing Joe. It’s always enlightening to see things from a different view point.

  29. NickyNickyNicky Says:

I’m hoping this is a REALLY idiotic question that I’m having the Most difficult time finding answers to. I just purchased the Nokia E62 and have used their Xpress Mail Setup to access my Gmail Account. However, no matter what settings I use each time this feature Performs a Push/Pull my previous emails are wiped out on the phone, and the menu option for emails concerning copying to another folder states it’s not supported. I’ve never tried the Pop3 connections, so is this normal that the emails already downloaded are removed on the next sync? Any Help or Ridicule will be appreciated……
    Thanks in Advance,
    Nicky

  30. Deanomite Says:

    Stupid Xpress Mail.

Yeah, Nicky, me, too. Not only that, but when I click on a message it won’t open it! Silly, silly software. PLUS I have to have a desktop client running?!? What are you, my ISP?!? I’ve spent a long time trying to get my personal (POP) account to PUSH to my E61, and unfortunately there’s no perfect solution.

Here’s a stake in the ground. THE BEST EMAIL CLIENT FOR THE E61 IS (imho) SEVEN’S Always on Mail Internet Edition.

    Pros:
    - Real Push
    - Integrated into the E61 active standy screen (not like ProfilMail!)
    - Open attachments easily

    Downsides:
    - Not supported in the US
    - Will “pause” if it loses connection (NYC) and not resume automatically…
    - Costs 55 euros. Whatever those are.

  31. Richard Says:

    Issues with the E62.

    1. 2.5 mm jack. This is sad. Standard is 3.5. Shure make a great - albeit expensive - 2.5mm stereo headset with an in-line mic.

    2. No A2DP support on Bluetooth so stareo Bluetooth headset/ microphone combinations won’t work - I believe

    3. ProfiMail - which is a fantastic email app workd with the E61, but not the E62. I have contacted the author and he has noted the problem. I doubt, though, there will be enough E62 owner interest for him to look into the issue.

  32. Ted Says:

There now seems to be a fair number of stereo headsets out there with the 2.5 mm jack, but thus far I haven’t found ANY of them to work with my E62. From an earlier post, it looks like the device searches for software on the headset? I’ve tried the BodyGlove EarGlove and the Jabbra c220s to no avail. Each time I get the same error message: “Enhancement not supported.” You would think at the very least you could get drivers to work with these devices, or is Nokia only interested in selling proprietary equipment?? If that’s the case, this bad boy’s going back to Cingular!!

  33. Fred Says:

Has anyone actually found headsets that work with the E62 2.5mm. I cannot find anything other than wireless bluetooth headsets for talking on the Nokia Website …

    Any help appreciated

  34. Steve Says:

Is there anyway to listen to my music through normal headphones, any type of adapter i can buy for my e62

  35. Eugene Says:

Can any anybody confirm this experiment : I had a bluetooth connection to my laptop as an audio headset. When I used the nokia music player in my phone the sound output was mono. In any case I used Belkin bluetooth reciever for my laptop.

Kind of messed up if this device only plays mono.

  36. brut Says:

    From the Cingular forums:

“The Palm 2-in-1 stereo headset for treo 650/700w seems to work on my E62. Not the greatest sound in the world but acceptable, and it functions as a handsfree headset when the phone rings.”

    Any confirms?

  37. brut Says:

I’ve just bought this Palm headset from the previous post and yes they work! (this one: http://www.palm.com/us/products/accessories/peripherals/3185WW.html )The sound is not so loud although it’s clear. Excellent for the start.

    Cheers!

  38. Louis Burgh Says:

Almost totally convinced to buy this Nokia E62 in the near future. My one question is this: will it pair with my Think Outside Stowaway Bluetooth Keyboard, like my Dell Axim X51v does? It sure would help. I can’t seem to find information on this, or any similar phone, pairing.

  39. admin Says:

    Hi Louis
    According to this site:
    http://www.mobilecityonline.com/wireless/store/productdetail.asp?productid=20396
it should work but to be sure you might want to contact Thinkoutside directly.
    Cheers

  40. Ted Says:

Has anyone had any issues playing Video on their E62? I shot some video clips with a sony digital camera, and even after converting them to either RealPlayer format or MP4 format (both of which SAY they are supported), it still gives me the “cannot play clip” error.

    Anyone…anyone? Bueller…Bueller….?

  41. Lost In Chicago Says:

OK. Just bought the E62 last weekend. I got a taste of my question from posts above but i want to ask a more specific question. I set up my Gmail on the phone and am able to send/receive emails. The problem is I can not open attachments! Is that to be expected? I sent my self an email to my E62 with a simple JPEG attached to the mail. When i try to open the attachment (it at least acknowledges there is one) I get an error that it has been removed, or something. HELP PLEASE!

  42. Andrew Says:

just got e62 from cingular and I am unable to sinc my outlook callendar with the phone??? is it possible, or is it an only option on the e61
I do not have a data package, I just want to be able to sinc the outlook callandar and to do list…..PLEASE HELP…do I need to get the e61 to be able to do that, thanks for your help

  43. admin Says:

    HI Andrew,
Don’t panic - you can use PC suite, which is included on the install CD, to sync your calendar.
    Cheers
    Ed

  44. Andrew Says:

Hi Ed, I tried that already and it is not allowing me to do that, it sincs contacts but not the calendar/ to do list……..I tried everything I know, and as of yet nothing is working, ,,,,,what am i doing wrong????

  45. Ted Says:

So after spending over $35 for Media Studio for Nokia 3.0, which is supposed to make all video work on the E62’s realplayer, all I’m getting is choppy playback (with Huge lags in time…it freezes for several seconds and then jumps ahead). Has anyone had any luch with any of the other studios out there…like Crystal2Mobile Player + Producer 2.0??

    Thanks for any insight

  46. Melissa Says:

I was so excited about my new e62 but have not been able to sync it with my entourage on mac which makes it a pointless device. I might need to return it and get a basic phone if I can’t figure it out. The issue is I don’t want to purchase 3rd party software if I can’t get it to sync with my version of entourage. Can anyone help?

  47. Melissa Says:

Just wanted to update my post, I tried everything Mactomster didnt work so I bit the bullet and purchased the nova media (http://www.novamedia.de/sync/index.html) and I’m syncing!

  48. parkjames Says:

I want to play music from my E62 on a sound system. Looks like the Palm and Nokia stereo headsets both work, so I doubt software is involved. I think the jack is wired like this: tip and top ring are the L & R, lower ring is mic & push button. Measuring lower ring with an ohmmeter, it’s got a diode response plus about 1.5K that lowers to about 30 ohm when you push the button. These mics require about 1.5 volts bias, so the phone must send this out the bottom ring and can sense the current somewhat revealing the presence of the mic and position of the button. So I am thinking if I make a breakout I can switch from the earbuds to a 3.5mm jack to play stereo on the sound system, but the mic and switch must stay connected to the lower ring if the phone won’t cooperate otherwise. Anybody got more info?

  49. KGro Says:

With regard to email on the E62, does anyone know if and how it may be possible to enlarge the type size when reading or composing? Is there an email program available that has a larger font than the default program?

    Thanks for any help!

  50. Dennis Says:

I have had my E62 for about a month- now it gives me an error:

“Error S7904″ and tells me I need to update the email client. I have tried to, but it keeps telling me that the messaging folder is open, and to close it and try it again. My question is how do I get there, without opening the messaging folder to update it!?

Help me, I am going crazy- the Cingular people couldn’t even figure it out.

    Thanks!

  51. mario Says:

Well, i tried my nokia n-gage qd 2.5 mm headphones and they didnt work. Sad, i was hoping to use my koss headphones with the e62…

About the own button… in my spanish version is the Ă‘ :)

  52. Marco Says:

I am about to get an E62. I really would like ot have wifi if possible (I know I should have bought an E61… but I am cheap!)
Do somebody know if a wifi microSD would work? (I do not mind if it sticks out a little…)

  53. admin Says:

    Hi Marco,
E61 and E62 use MiniSD (the newer E65, E61i and E90 all use MicroSD). However, i really doubt that even a WiFi mini SD would work. My suggestion is that if WiFi really is important go with the E61. With E61i out you should be able to see some good deals for the E61.
    Just my suggestion…

  54. Will Says:

I’m not sure if the “enhancement not supported” issue was fully dealt with? My stereo headphones from my old motorola ROKR and my 2.5 - 3.5 adapter won’t work? Is there hope for me to listen to music in stereo on my E62?????

  55. mohit Says:

    HI,
At the very 1st look i was in love with NOkia e62, but all my dreams were
shattered when i noted that it had a very poor mp3 player. Actually i was
fooled, the mp3 player had equalizer ( bass, treble , everythin), but its certainly of no use, as even with the wired headsets the sound is very poor. I tried with nokia hs47 headsets which supports stereo playback but the output
was a real shit. These nokia people has been playin games with my heart.
Plz do let me know if there is a way to get good stereo output & how it
is as compared to ipod. Please do let me know about the same, i’ll b really thankful to you.

  56. TREVOR Says:

Why won’t my video clips work with my nokia e62? They are MPG, and Mp4.

  57. dagaba Says:

    Trevor,

You can watch anything in 3GP format on the E62. Just find a conversion program. I use winavi converter.

  58. technofauxb Says:

I wanted to plug my E62 into the auxiliary jack of my car, to listen to music, podcasts, etc. stored on my phone. Since you get that pesky “enhancement not supported” message if you try to plug most 2.5mm adapters into the phone, I bought the Nokia Phone Adapter (HDA-11) from the Nokia website:

    http://www.nokiausa.com/link?cid=EDITORIAL_250345

I then plugged a Radio Shack 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter (274-004) into the Nokia Adapter:

    http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2603246&cp

Then I just plugged one end of a standard 3.5mm cable into the Radio Shack adapter and the other end into my auxiliary jack.

Works great. I now listen to podcasts as I drive. Total cost, about $25.

    And yes, it’s in stereo.

  59. Gar79 Says:

I’ve been looking into this situation for a week or so. “technofauxb” seems to have the right idea. not sure what the nokia hda-11 does exactly, but it makes it work! Haven’t tried it yet, but am leaning towards ordering it.

Does anyone have any thoughts on using an adapter like this one:

    http://www.semsons.com/2miusband3st.html

I’m in the process of trying to find a compatible mini-usb adapter. I started looking into this possibility because everything I read involved “enhancement not supported”. Any thoughts would be great. Just want to get it right and hear some tunes!
