Inside the Nokia E62

We continue our little Nokia E62 exposé with a peek inside the device.

The Nokia E62 has a somewhat different menu layout and slightly different icons.

The "Organizer" folder is combined with the "Office" folder, there is no "Connnect" folder etc. Not big changes but if you are used to the standard layout of the Nokia E61 it takes some time to readjust yourself.

The bundled IM application is from OZ Commmunications and supports the three major (in the US) IM networks, YIM, AIM & MSN.

The application is easy to use and works pretty well. There are no server settings needed. You only need your username and password, that's it.

This also means that you cannot "share" server settings with the IM client bundled on the Nokia E61. Sorry! I know several of you have asked me for the server settings. It can't be done.

There is one *huge* drawback with the appliccation in my opinion. You can only be signed on to one IM network at the time! In order to go from one IM network to the other you need to first exit the first IM community you logged on to…

Included on the device, are three themes for the Nokia E62. Those themes are Cingular, Dark Stripes and Steel.

does this mean the application can be installed on the e61?

  2. vjleon Says:

Hi, thanks a lot for the information, it would be nice from Nokia to put in the support section under phone software the darkstripes and steel themes in order for the people that have the E61 could enjoy them too, my E61 just came with the Nokia default theme.

I’m hoping this is a REALLY idiotic question that I’m having the Most difficult time finding answers to. I just purchased the Nokia E62 and have used their Xpress Mail Setup to access my Gmail Account. However, no matter what settings I use each time this feature Performs a Push/Pull my previous emails are wiped out on the phone, and the menu option for emails concerning copying to another folder states it’s not supported. I’ve never tried the Pop3 connections, so is this normal that the emails already downloaded are removed on the next sync? Any Help or Ridicule will be appreciated……
    Thanks in Advance,
    Nicky

  4. Victor Miranda Says:

I have a Nokia E62 and it works great with my macbook pro os 10.4.8 and isync. I installed Agilera messanger since i use icq a lot and many of the themes from you website. Favorite is orange blue. Pretty happy with it. The only thing that i don’t like is the dialog windos when you open email, not text mesage. It takes long to open a simple text email. Is there a way to disable that dialog opening email.

    Thanks

  5. Trat Says:

SoMebody please get me that dark stripes theme!!!

  6. Kenneth Says:

You have to change the ammount of emails the phone saves under settings

  7. dan Says:

is there a way to extract the Own Key (multimedia key) software so i can use it on a e61?

  8. diego Says:

Yes, please share those themes to 61 users….

  9. oz Says:

where can we get and download the IM application software for the nokia E61?
    any help???
    thanks.

  10. admin Says:

The OZ Communications IM application is not available for download. It is only available as a pre-installed client set to work with Cingular, to connect to the three IM networks.

  11. johnny40964096 Says:

can the im application be extracted from e62?Thanks

  12. XeM Says:

Ya..can anyone extract these lovely themes pls…

  13. nickynickynicky Says:

Only setting I found for email messages was the one that lets you spec how many you want to download which I still have set at 25. Even if I only have 1 email message that gets pushed to the phone, it’s gone as soon as the next message or messages get pushed.

  14. Param Says:

The way it shoulds the E62 is good and more added features than the E61, Nokia should come up with software upgrades for the E61 so that both phones have the same features….some should tell Nokia…..lol. It would be nice to have the own key feature on the E61 or the software so that we as user can set a key to do so and there should be a free IM (MSN) SOFTWARE we can use. Any one knows of open please do let me know.

  15. Param Says:

Sorry mis type my last reply should read.
    The way it sounds

  16. adrian Says:

Those themes are excellent, hopefully they can be extracted out and used on the e61, no more low res battery and signal indicators!

  17. Trat Says:

Nobody has those themes to share?

  18. Kulam Says:

Hope somebody geys us those E62 themes…. yummy! :)

  19. weareborg Says:

Someone please provide the theme files?
Like the Steel one.. Looks like a nice mod of the Brushed Metal one I use..

  20. John Says:

Forget those themes, we need someone who can extract the OZ Communications Mobile Instant Messaging software… for use with other S60v3 phones like N80…etc

  21. agwe23 Says:

the steel theme is nice. the black one is ok too. any way to extract those themes from the e62 so we e61 users can enjoy it as well?

oops didnt read the posts above saying the same thing hehehe

  22. shahine.com/omar/ - Thoughts on the Nokia E61 (and E62) Says:

[...] The Nokia E62 was just released for Cingular for $200 retail or $150 with renewal of your contract. It’s a full $200 - $250 cheaper than the E61 that I bought (the no contract renewal price is $350). The differences are that the E62 lacks Wifi and 3G and has a mini-usb port and standard headphone jack. However, the 3G support on the E61 does not work in the US anyway (different frequency). For $150 the phone is a really great value IMHO. The Cingular E62 also support the major IM carriers in the US (which the E61 does not without third party software). 24. Sunny Says:

Does anyone know of a good email client that works for gmail, rather then the built in one or Profmail?

When i connected with the built in one, it retreaved all my mail, rather then, just my inbox.

I installed Profmail, but could not get it to launch, it would just crash.

    Any help would be great.

  25. Jeff Says:

Is it just me or does the E62 seem extremely slow when going through to phone. Even to just look at the adress book. There is a pause then it loades.

Do i have a some what slow phone. Or is this normal?

  26. nickynickynicky Says:

I have the EXACT same issues Sunny. You can go to gmail and change your settings so that it only grabs emails starting at the moment you make the change, other than downloading all emails in the past. Just remember to click the save button in gmail after changing the settings. However, as I’ve noted, from then on out everytime you either push or pull to your gmail account you’ll lose on your phone any previous downloaded gmails. I turned off the PUSH setting and just use the receive button, but even then I see no way of saving any downloaded gmails once they are on the phone…trying to move them to another folder only brings an alert message stating that feature is not valid. As far as Profmail….I have the same issue as you and have read on other sites the same thing with other users.

  27. Jeff Says:

Is it just me or is the nokia E62 some what slow. whenever i select something the phone has to think before it opens the file. Even when i click on the adress book its almost like its not running fast enough.

Is this how everyones phone is? Or is mine a slow one?

  28. Jeff Says:

This is odd. I plugged in the headset that came with the phone and a message pops up saying enhancement not supported? I looked at the settings and cant find anyhting to change. Has anyone else noticed this? or had this problem?

  29. wannabetechie Says:

    Hello all,

I have the E61 on Cingular. I know that the IM app was a no go when I first purchased the phone. I called Cingular and asked them about the IM app (OZ Communications IM application). They have it but could not email it to me (wtf ?) to install on the phone. Anyone know if a corporate Cingular store has the capabilities to install sw at the store? It may be worth a shot……

  30. jurgen Says:

I’d like to be able to view .mpg files on my phone-unfortunately the Realplayer which is installed on the phone doesn’t have the capacity to play them..? I own a Nokia E62.

  39. jip Says:

if someone installed sysexplorer onto the e62 and looked through phone i think the install for that IM might be there, copy to phone…so on so forth

  40. Stevie Says:

Does anyone’s E62 keep asking to “Allow application to use network and send or receive data” it keeps asking that over and over when I am in a java app.

  41. Mark Says:

Jeff — I have noticed the same problem with the headset.. I’d plug it in and it would say it’s not compatible… I just unplugged it and plugged it back in a few times and it worked.. The message went away…

    Cheers

    Mark

Now, does anyone have an answer for this one? I’m having continual text-messaging problems. I have Cingular service.. At first, text messages would only come through if I turned the phone off and back on… This is not good.. I dealt with Cingular customer tech guys… They sent a “fix-it” in the form of a service message… That worked for about a day and a half.. and now it’s back to not getting messages… The other thing, I sent myself several test messages… My E62 message indicator (that little envelope) will start blinking like crazy… Then the phone says there’s not enough memory to receive messages and that I should make room by erasing stuff… But I have 80 MB left on the phone… So, I erase all messages anyway, the envelope keeps blinking, and no messages come in… Cingular hasn’t helped much; only to say they haven’t heard of this…

    HELP

    :)

  42. Mark Says:

Jeff — By the way, yes, my E62 can be brutally slow… Changing apps, starting apps, etc.. Can take a while.. .My wife’s has same issue… Hopefully, they’ll have a software update on the Nokia site… There’s already a text message fix, that supposedly makes sending messages faster.. But so far, I’ve been unable to download it for some reason..

    Cheers

    Mark

  43. Dave Says:

You can get the same sms application from the Nokia europe web site, there is a problem with the USA site.

  44. Mark Says:

Thanks for the tip about the sms app Dave!

    Cheers

  45. Jeff Says:

Does anyone know if the E61 features the same sluggish performance when opening/changing apps as the E62 does?

  46. newto62 Says:

    Hi,
I just got a Nokia E62 and i’m wondering how i can use google talk on it. Anyone know? hyalp :) thanks, newto62

  47. Ray Says:

Mark, I have the same problem with the blinking envelope and message stating that there is not enough memory to receive messages, I can’t seem to solve the problem and it is annoying the hell out of me. If you have found a solution, please post it, I’m going to talk to tech support later this afternoon and will see if I have any luck.

  48. Tonye62 Says:

Peter LIM, I have read the same solution on multiple sites but can’t seem to find exactly where to change to recent:username@gmai.com. When in Xpress mail settings/account information I am unable to change the Email Id. Is this the correct place? Thanks.

  49. iuseamac Says:

I too am having the blinking envelope problems. Another problem that has just started occuring is that the IM application keeps popping open wanting to sign on. I can’t see anything to change this. I DO NOT have the auto log in checked. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

  50. Matt Says:

I am having the same problem with being unable to revieve texts. I just recieve an error message saying that my inbox is full, even though its not. Also, my IM tries to sign itself on randomly and i dont know how to make it stop. I will get random texts days after they were sent to me, all at once. WHAT DO I DO

  51. Daniel Says:

Anyone else having probs using the built in AIM client on the e62? Every time I try to connect, I get almost all the way connected, only to see “Communications error. Please try again or check or your settings”. I have no problem getting to the web or checking mail. Thanks!

  52. admin Says:

That is strange. I assume you are with Cingular? I have no problems connecting. Have you tried using a different access point?

  53. Daniel Says:

i’ve tried other agile messenger, and i also cannot connect. i’m with cingular and trying to use a .mac account.

  54. admin Says:

I see. I also cannot connect to iChat (through AOL IM) It works for Yahoo though. Not sure why iChat through AOL IM doesn’t work.

  55. Jen Says:

Everytime I synchronize, I have duplicate entries on my calendar. I have looked, and I see no way to set it properly. Am I missing something?

  56. Ben0429 Says:

Is there any way i can connect to AIM without having to use the built in version of it on the E62?

  57. Ben Says:

So the good news is that I have finally got my e70 connected to gmail, although it is a clunky interface via the nokia mail client.

The bad news is that nobody has found a way to connect with the internal IM client. Does any one have an ideaof these server settings?

  58. Dennis Says:

Hey, I’ve found that my old school AIM address will connect via the E62 built-in client, but not my .mac address. I also get “Communications error. Please try again or check or your settings”.

I wonder if the client just cannot handle mac.com addresses for IM. Anyone know for sure? Better yet, anyone know of an IM client that DOES work with .mac?

  59. Ivan Says:

What are the settings to set up an AIM account on the bundled software that comes with the E62? I tried MSN and it doesn’t connect so I’ll try AIM then…

But the PC suite cannot see the phone. After checking the connections using the DEVICE MANAGER, i noticed that the USB cable will be seen on port 11 while the Nokia E62 modem is on port 12. Can you please advise me and tell me what am doing wrong???

I’m desperate for assistance with my new Nokia E61 PDA. I know that I’m going to love it as soon as it is fully set up! I’m a tech-novice, so I really need simple step by step instrucition on setting up my email. I just want to press the email key, and have my messages appear. Is that possible, and how do I make it happen?

Thanks so much to anyone who can provide some assistance!

Are there ant ham radio themes out there and how can I move or download items to my phone when I do not pay for media net or Mall.

  65. JamieLynn Says:

how do i rearrange the icons on the home menu???
its a bit pointless to have the bluetooth, clock, and calculator there when i hardly use them. it would be a lot nicer to be able to have options there that i would actually use.

  66. Chad Says:

I bought the e62 and am using isp.cingular as my acess point. It works perfect for emails and web access, plus I don’t have to pay extra for internet service. The only trouble I am having is logging on to any of the 3 IM services. Does anyone know where or how to configure that to work. That is the only thing I lack. Or is there a different IM SERVICE i can use other than Agile. I currently have that, and it works fine. I just would like to use the ones that came with the phone.

    Help me out.

I have an E62 that will not open any messages, Text or Email. I can recieve them fine but when I try to open, nothing happens. Nokia support has not been helpful yet (it takes a while for them to reply with questions to which I respond and wait again). Has anyone else had this problem? Anyone know a fix?

  70. admin Says:

Hmm, it could be that a hard reset could fix this strange issue. remember that a hard reset will erase everything on your device so back up your device before your try it. refer to the “code” section if you don’t know how to perform a hard reset.

I am using E-62 Nokia since Jan’2007.Today only I noticed a message repeatedly flashing on the sceen “ENHANCEMENT NOT SUPPORTED”. This message is regarding WHAT?

I went to Nokia Care at south extention part-I, New Delhi where I was advised to leave hand set since there is a problem in the software and this would require at least one week’s time. I did not agree to leave hand set because a STANDBY hand set was refused for the time my hand set starts working.

  72. Taylor Says:

is there anyway to hack the e62 so you can use the email light for text alerts? just wondering

  73. ddas-edEN Says:

My only-a-month-old E62 S60 3rd edition device is showing problem while booting up - after it shows the Nokia logo while booting - it freezes with a

white screen. And the phone does not complete booting & does not show the startup (Standby) screen. The screen backlight also does not turn off - it

keeps glowing till I take out the battery (cell). Also in this position the device cannot be switched off using it’s power button.

I tried to hard reset the device by holding down the Green, 3 and * keys while rebooting. But it doesn’t have any effect on the device.

What is the correct way to do this? Should I keep the Green, 3 and * keys pressed even before I power on the device? How long should the 3 keys be kept

    pressed?

My E62 is only 25-days old, & it has already given me a nightmare. I wonder what’s the experience of other users (with this device) like. If I give it

to a Nokia Care how much time do you think it should take. I spoke to Nokia Care and they said they won’t provide me with a standby mobile phone for

    the repair-period.

Has anyone seen or experienced this problem? What did you do? Did Nokia Care fix the issue? Did the problem relapse again after you got it fixed from

Nokia Care? Is it a firmware problem? Or software problem?

In the 23 days that my E62 functioned properly, I used it heavily and was very satisfied with its performance - even though it has occassionally

freezed while surfing the GPRS Internet. I was certainly amazed at its capabilities and started looking at it with a very very high esteemed device

developed designed manufactured and assembled with utmost care. I waited for many months to save the money to get it. Now I’m heartbroken.

How reliable is this E62 device? This way I doubt how many of you could really on it.

  74. AMAN Says:

i think the whole blinking envelope not receiving txts has to do with IM. whenever i use the IM i get that problem, but when i dont open it, the txt’s come in fine, i dont know why that is. Plus the phone is VERY slow! i cant stress that enough, it takes 15 seconds to open up a txt.

  75. Arman Says:

    Hello my friend,

I’m having the same problem with this phone. Cingular has replaced it for me 5 times already with them same problem. My 5th E62 froze on again yesterday….. This is really depressing….

I like the phone, the sound quality if great and features are reasonable only if it didnt freeze as much…..

  76. -R Says:

Well, CAN the email indicator light be used in anyway, shape or form, to blink when there is a new TEXT message? My service provider seems to prevent me from accessing a ful HTML network, thereby preventing me to connect to my email account unless I sign up with a hella expen$ive email option, damn it, I just wanna see that little light blink!!!!

Ddas….. seems you are not alone with the White Screen of Death issue. I got an E62 through the Fido network in Canada 8 days ago. E62 number one went into unbootable white death mode after 3 days. E62 number two died two days ago and so it is back to the shop for number three. If Fido had an alternative Blackberry hardware option I would take it. Friends with the same phone are now telling me that they are on their fifth and sixth replacements. I have read on other blogs that it is essential that the battery NEVER be allowed to run down completely as this causes these failures. Any other solutions or causes that anyone has found for this problem? It it hard to believe that a phone could be SO unreliable….

  78. Anita Says:

Help! This is my second or third E62. THe first one froze, I returned it. The second one froze, then the told me I had a bogus battery in the device. It wasn’t an authentic Nokia Battery even though it came with the device. The third time it froze and I couldn’t get it rebooted I had to send it back. They would not send me a new one but “fix” my old one. I’ve had the old one since the end of April and it has started to freeze again. It’s embarrasing when you have to take the battery out to get the thing working and you are in the middle of a business meeting. They really don’t offer much customer service. Are we stuck with these things??!?!!

i bought the E62 used from my friend cuz i wanted a PDA type phone for mostly texting but the damn texting was so slow, i wanted to smash it!! good thing i didnt…..

i found a solution to everyones problem today.. here it is:

    go to http://www.nokiausa.com
then search for the E62 phone
then go to software i think
and you have to DL “SMS ACCELERATOR”
then you’ll have to transfer it your E62 using a USB cable or the program that comes with it, PC suite or whatever…

THIS PROGRAM WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE!!!!
I HAVE SENT OUT 30000 TEXT MESSAGES SINCE I DL’ED THIS PROGRAM 20 MINUTES AGO! HAHAHAHA ITS SO COOL!

I WAS so close to putting it up for a trade or better off CHUCKING THIS PHONE up until earlier today and now i love it again…

trust me, you definitely want to get this done! good luck…

now how the fuck do i get rid of this stupid blinking envelope!!?!!?!
it keeps opening up the AIM screen and its pissing me offf!!!

I want to thank ORENJM for that tip, because it has stopped me from throwing this thing into the river. I got it used and I loved it at first then the text messages started to take at least 3 mins to send ( I timed them ). Since I text most of the time, this has been a real relief in the few minutes that I’ve used it so far. This makes it a lot easier to deal with, because its the only real problem that I’ve had.
