A First Look Inside the Nokia E50

As most of us are, I am a creature of habit. Over the past month I have gotten used to the big nice screen of the Nokia E61. Switching to the Nokia E50 means giving up some of that screen size for a smaller and handier device - a trade off I am willing to make on a Sturday or Sunday.

However, it does take some time to get adjusted to the new dimensions.

The Nokia E50 comes with some features and applications I wish was present in the Nokia E61. One of those features is the predictive text input method. Of course, it is more or less an imperative to have predictive text input on a non QWERTY device but I still think it would have been great to have it on the Nokia E61. Anyway - I'm glad that it is a part of the Nokia E50.

Another neat feature is the Text To Speech function which is used by the Message Reader application. Yay, no more reading your messages - let the device read them for you ;-)

A great enhancement is the Notification Light. The notification light of the Nokia E50 is the area around the joystick. Instead of only using the notification light as a new mail notifier as on the Nokia E61, the Nokia E50 has the capability to use it to notify the user of a number of events.

More tomorrow about my favourite new application bundled on the Nokia E50 - Team Suite.

Team Suite is a wicked application.
I love sending group SMSes on it. Works great.
Message reader is awesome as well with all the included accents and languages that come on the CD.
Wish it would read more than just messages such as a Word document or an E-book so i can just listen instead of look at the screen.

UGH!!!! i want that last feature SOOO BADLY! where the light blinks for other indications besides just new e-mail!!! sooooo AWESOME!

  3. trat Says:

Love the notifed events options. Would love to see that on my E61 in the future. Any new themes on the device BTW?

  4. admin Says:

    Hi Josh & Trat
Yes - that is a very clever feature that I use a lot. I bought my device unlocked and it only came with the standard Nokia Theme.

    Elisha,
Couldn’t agree with you more. Team Suite is such a great application. I don’t understand why it is not available for ALL Eseries devices.

Love the design of E50. It resembles me 6310i that I owned awile ago. I would buy it the moment it hit the store shelves, but it don’t have 2 features I want: Wi-Fi and A2DP. Maybe E51 next year, heh?

  6. Elisha Says:

Maybe because the “E-Fiddy” as Boston_Errol in HoFo calls is it the latest and greatest E-series minus 3G, QWERTY and WiFi.
But it definitely is the sexiest and toughest.

    Hello!
I would like to talk about the reading sms´s feature. Acording to the manual, you have to press green key when you receive a text message, and the application will launch and read your message, but in mine´s doesn´t works.
    How does it work?
    cheers

:-) Well, some people spend their money on a nice car, clothes home entertainment system etc. I drive a VERRRY old car, use a ten year old tv but when it comes to gadgets - I *SPLUR* :-p

  12. Bump Out Says:

So that’s what that app does!

I have a chance to play with the E50 in September, and besides the 1 megapixel camera, I would still rather stick with the E61. I was also given the chance to buy it at a discount which I reject. I would die without my WIFI.

The N95 is the trueblue E61 replacement, E50 would be nice as a supplement if you need camera. :)

  13. Mikel Says:

    Hi!
Have you tried he E50 as a mp3 player?mine´s is slow as hell! I´m using a 256 sandisk microsd, so I think that is for the card.
Ther is a firmware update to this model? because I have a little bugs with it.
    Cheers!

Can anyone comment on the ’slowness’ of the E50 (or even E60)? I have an E62– and it takes a long time to open or switch apps. Surprisingly long. Are other E-series phones the same?

  15. admin Says:

    Hi Sriram,
I think speed and the perception of how long time it takes to load apps is it’s quite relative. Opening a java app takes longer time than a regular app (because of the JVM that needs to load). I personally don’t think it is painfully slow but I guess that is relative.

    Hi!. :)
I’m thinking about dropping TracFone and going with T-Mobile. I’m
looking at a Nokia 6101 for my Grandpa. My only problem is that my
Grandpa is a little hard of hearing and can’t hear some of the ring
tones that are on some cell phones. He had a Nokia 5180ip and couldn’t
    hear it half the time.

I got him a Nokia 1100, it was a little better but not much. I then
got him a Nokia 2600 and there was one ringtone on it that was pretty
good for him and he could hear it pretty well. Forget the vibrate
function. They all suck equally in all cell phones.

Does anybody know if the Nokia 6101 is as loud as the Nokia 2600? Or
can the ring tone be put through the speakerphone on the Nokia 6101 to
be really loud like the Nextel junk?

I need something really loud for him. The 6101 has all the bells and
whistles he wants. He’s not really old, just can’t hear crap.

He’s pretty well set on the 6101

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

I just got my e50 and I’m so very happy with it. I’ve read a lot about people saying it’s slow, but I honestly haven’t experienced anything slow about it. Maybe it is, compared to other s60 phones, but I don’t have any experience with any others. So far, 2 thumbs way up!!

oh, and if anyone knows of a good place to get e50 themes I’d love to know…

[...] Although I have written about the Nokia E50 before I feel that it wasn’t a “review” of the device. Like so many of my posts it was more a photo exposé than anything else. To make things right I asked Asri from the excellent site i-symbian to write a more in depth review of the Nokia E50. Here’s Asri’s report: [...]

  22. Emre Says:

    Hi everyone…

I currently own an E50, after going through 6600 (3 yrs. ago I guess) and E61 (yep, that’s right. Bought it 3 months ago and replaced it nearly 1 month ago)… I discarded the E61 as soon as I figured out that I didn’t use the keyboard much to make me carry it along…

I still miss the WLAN though, but only for web browsing. And the landscape screen of course… As the resolutions are same (except one is portrait), I don’t get frustrated by it’s screen, but the speed of downloads sometimes bores me (as I bought it with a 1gig Micro-SD).

I use EGPRS with the Avaya Corporate VoIP plan I had it configured. I use Avaya for nearly every call, routing me through the corporate call-center. Only I drop to GSM when there are no free lines with the corp. system.

It’s sleek, it’s lighter, it’s tougher and looks better (IMHO). So, I don’t usually miss the E61 when I have my little mob-office with me. And, it’s battery lasts more than E61’s…

So, I can easily say “Go buy the E50, if you don’t use Wifi and the full QWERTY keyboard much. Otherwise, go ahead and stick with the E61/E62. These are the best choices Nokia offer currently.”

Final words: Cheers Ed, nice work here.

Can the Msg reader read new SMS? I mean instead of opening the reader and then reading sms can’t it read automatically when a new sms comes?

Is it possible to change the font size on E50 and how?

  29. admin Says:

    HI Dejan,
Only through using certain application (3rd party) that supports scalable font size can you change it.

    One example is this application:

    Thanks in advance for help.

    Hi,
I also like E50 b’coz of it’s slikness and nice functionalities like zip manager
it’s a quadband phone. It looks nice. the most important thimg is it’s extended battery talk time which is hardly seen in a multimedia phone. nice NOKIA , keep it up. We are with you.
