Friday - How About Some Wallpapers?

There's been a few posts about Nokia E61 themes this week so I thought we should try something different - but still in on the same topic - wallpapers.

Wallpapers can be used to modify existing themes. Eugene sent me a collection of interesting images that are suitable as wallpapers. Many of them works great with darker themes.

Just copy the images to your device - I put the wallpapers in the "Images" folder. Then open "Themes" and select the theme you want to edit and change Wallpaper to "User defined" and pick the wallpaper you want to use.

Thanks Eugene!

I like the “metallic” theme on your “how-to” screenshots… It suits to my site’s design.
Could your share with me that theme?

Not sure how to extract the themes. There is no option to do so. Any suggestions?

I tried to do this but the images I tried to use wouldn’t “stretch” to cover the whole screen. Is there a trick to do this? Maybe there’s a preset size that the background needs to be?

It’s usual .zip archive. You can use any archiver (e.g. WinZip, WinRAR) or standard WinXP uncompression feature.
E61 has zip manager too. Send the file to the device and open it from the Incoming folder or with File Manager, and just extract it to suggest folder.

The images specially cut to 320×200 size to fit E61 and E62 wallpaper requirements. Other devices cannot show images correctly.

[...] Changing the background on E61/E61 smartphone (and for that matter any Symbian device) is quite simple. Instructions are also available on the E-Series blog. Enjoy! [...]

    Hi,
I recently bought an E61i.. The images i set as Background wouldn’t “stretch” to cover the whole screen. Is there a way to do this?

I finally found that although the screen size is 320×240, the image you use for wallpaper must be 320 x 197 to accomodate the top and bottom menu bars. Otherwise the image is shrunk automatically with proportions constrained, and you get the theme’s default background all the way around.

Nokia really lamed out on this - not only is there no way to edit the image size in the device (ok, fine, I can live with that), unless you resize the image manually on a computer and send it back to the phone (and editing involves shrinking to 320×240 proportionally then cropping the height to 197), it is shrunk as above. That’s not wallpaper, that’s a picture in the center of the screen.

Why isn’t the image resized on the fly when it’s chosen as wallpaper, or, originally shot at correct wallpaper size? Those extra few pixels don’t matter in terms of photo quality.

Anyway, there’s the way to make your own wallpaper without purchasing special software, etc.
