How do you Sync Nokia E61 With Your Mac - Nokia E61 Plugin for iSync
I have two computers, one Mac and one PC. Due to Nokia's poor Apple support and Apple's lack of iSync plugins I haven't been able to syncronize my Nokia E61 with my Mac.
I recently discovered Nova Media's iSync plugins and was about to spend the 10 Euros for their plugin when I came across Eko Juniarto's free iSync plugin. Eko has put together a plugin that is easy to install, works great and is free to boot - thank you Eko!
Update: If you are using Mac OS 10.4.7 this might not be working any more. Try this to sync your E61 with your Mac.

[...] Last night I updated my Powerbook to Mac to Mac OS 10.4.7 and that broke my previously installed plugin that let me sync my Mac with the Nokia E61. This morning I was met with the following error message telling me that the plug-in for the Nokia E61 was missing. [...]

Hi!
First:
Nice site!
Second:
The iSync plugin is excellent! The plugin works better than Nokias own “Suite” for XP. Purchased a BT-dongle which works fine with everyting else in both Linux and Windows, including connecting to the E61 but only for transfers of files not syncing Outlook.
As for the Mac? Everything just works! Syncing addressbook, contacts and files. Thanks this site! A big thank you to Eko Juniarto for his excellent work with the iSync plugin!

Hi Per,
Thanks for stopping by. Yes a lot of kudos goes out to Mactomster and Eko - both great guys!

I can’t get your the plugin into iSync. Please help!
I previously purchased NovaMedia’s plugin and now it’s stuck in my iSync. I get it off it, therefore when I remove the device from iSync menu and then choose to discover new device again, it pops up the menu with NovaMedia plugin saying new device detected and NovaMedia logo there.
How can I get rid of NovaMedia and get your plugin working? I followed all the instructions on your site.
P.S. By the way, NovaMedia’s plugin crashed my iSync again and again. I can’t sync with it either!
HEEELP!

Hi Alexander,
Since you purchased the plugin from NovaMedia I wouldn’t hesitate contacting them. They are good people and since you paid you are entitled to support.
However, you can find everything related to iSync Phoneplugins here:
Library > PhonePlugins
Remove the plugins from NovaMedia and install the plugin from Mactomster.
Hope this works!

So - any advice for those of us that have totally screwed up their iSync app? I think I was moving files around in the wrong place (inside the app’s package contents) and now believe I’ll need to reinstall the app from scratch.
Only trouble is, I can’t see how this is done…
Thanks in advance to anyone who knows how to reinstall iSync.
July 6th, 2006 at 9:08 pm
Fixed…
In order to repair my iSync install I went to:
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxupdate1047combointel.html
And reinstalled the last update for 10.4.7. After that, I was able to sync.

Hi Joe,
I’m glad it worked out for you. Thanks for following up and posting the link.

Has anyone had any success doing a sync without the direct cable connection (meaning via Bluetooth or other)??? This thing has bluetooth, infrared, wifi, etc., you think it could handle it, but the PC suite just won’t work with Bluetooth!

Eko’s site is no longer available, is there anywhere else I can get the plugin ?
Thanks

Hi Brian,
I have had no problem to sync over BT. This how I did it on a PC
(I assume your on a PC right)
1. Make sure BT is turned on and is discoverable/visible to all (PC & Nokia E61)
2. Start Nokia PC suite. Click on get connected. Click Next. Choose Bluetooth. The PC app goes out to discover the E61.
3. Confirm the E61.
4. Syncronize

Hi Ed,
So I finally got my E61 and found the plugins that will enable me to my PowerBook via Bluetooth. I downloaded and installed the first plugin at http://data.startrek.or.id/?p=164 and was correct to figure it wouldn’t work since this plugin was designed for 10.4.6.
I then downloaded the plugin at http://www.mactomster.de/isync/isync.html but found it to be in a language I do not speak.
May I ask how you got it to work?
July 18th, 2006 at 9:40 am
I have used the new plugin for 10.4.7, and I am really happy about it. There are a few problems, however:
1) “All day” events show up as meetings from 12:00am to 11:59pm…very annoying
2) Birthdays in my address book show up properly, but the birthday is not put into the calendar.
3) It seems that instead of one address field that has the entire address (as you would address it on a letter), there is a separate field for each attribute (street, city, state, zip)
Does anyone else notice these tihngs? I have heard that some of these issues (number 1 in particular) is because Nokia’s calendar app does not properly implement the SyncML standard. It would be interesting to see if there are any workarounds for this.
Great blog, I love it!! Keep up the good work!

Hi there - just got an E61 after ditching my T-Mobile MDA. Loving it so far
Got the Nova Media plugin and its working great on my MBP. However, it keeps asking to allow the connection from the MBP on my E61 when intiating a sync. I remember on my old Sony that you can set it to permanently allow connections without asking - how do you do this on the E61?
keep up the good work - great site.

HI Ash,
Mactomster’s plugin works pretty good. It won’t sync everything but your contacts and calendar will sync. It’s a free plugin in.
September 23rd, 2006 at 7:53 am
[...] Though Nokia doesn’t provide support for synching the E61 with Apple OS X, there is a iSynch plugin available that will allow you to flawlessly synch your Nokia E61 with Apple OS X. Check out the post and discussion here for more information. I am using the plugin available here which I found out about here. [...]

Guys,
I just bought the Nokia E 61 and now I am worried about syncing in my contacts as well as my calendar. I have been using Entourage and all my contacts and my calendar items are in there in the exchange server. I would really like to know how do i use Isync to make this work? If someone could direct me to a step by step procedure for this it will be great. I am not good with these computers

I’ve bought the Nokia E61 but am still running OS 10.3.9, and the link to Eko’s iSync plugin now appears out of date or obsolete.
Can anyone suggest an alternative plugin, or a new link to Eko’s?
Many thanks.

Anyone has any idea on how to make the Address Book Groups on the Mac become part of a Category on the e61?
The sync goes very well, after I installed mactomster plug, but I get all the contacts in one big list.
The Calendar categories work very well.
December 3rd, 2006 at 8:37 am
can anyone verify having synched long *notes* associated with addressbook entries? i am using isync 2.3 without any plugins (but with the MetaClasses.plist modified to recognize the E61) and can get contacts and calendar entries synchronized with the E61 but notes associated with addressbook entries get TRUNCATED at around 256 characters.

March 16th, 2007 at 9:53 am
Good news! I just upgraded to 10.4.9, and part of the upgrade enables native E61 sync support! First time I tried, it told me that the eseries.phoneplugin was an incompatible plugin, and I had to remove it. I also had to remove and re-add the device, since the first attempt failed, but after doing that, it’s happily syncing along now.
March 20th, 2007 at 1:47 am
Hi, any idea how to copy sms from the e61 phone to memory card?
Dean.
March 20th, 2007 at 4:59 am
Just upgraded to OS X 10.4.9, and iSync has done a few odd things since — first it found half a dozen conflicts between my .Mac account and my iCal, even though nothing had changed on either. Then, as Kaydub said, I was informed that eseries.phoneplugin was no longer compatible and had to be removed.
The good news is that e61 syncing is now provided by Apple. The bad news is that it doesn’t seem to recognise that it’s the same device as before with the same data as is already present in iCal, Address Book, etc. and so my first sync wanted to import 645 items from the phone to the computer.
I think the answer is to make sure everything’s up to date before you upgrade to 10.4.9, then after the upgrade, if you get the same problem, just cancel the sync*, delete everything from the phone, then re-sync.
*You are prompted to accept it or not, because there will be so many changes.
March 20th, 2007 at 8:55 am
I went through the same experience after applying 10.4.9, although in my case I just did a “Reset Device” on my E62 right away (after I uninstalled all the Nova Media plug-ins of course).
The “Reset Device” option in iSync basically forces everything on the device to be removed and a one-way sync to be initiated from iSync to the device. It’s a bit easier than trying to remove everything from the device manually first.

Nokia E60, MackBook Pro.
Upgraded to Mac OS X 10.4.9 and Novamedia plugins stopped working (kept getting ‘The connection was lost’ message before completion of sync).
Next, made mistake of installing the Nokia plugins without first un-installing the Novamedia ones - same problem. Tried new version of Novamedia plugins - no joy.
Finally, read the FAQs in the Novamedia manual, which hint at what you should do:
1) Uninstall Novamedia plugins.
2) Install the official (Nokia) plugins.
All working fine now.

I am running old firmware (2.xxx) on nokia e61, and OSX 10.4.9 on my mac. isync used to work with mactomster plug-ins for OSX 10.4.8, but the native client for 10.4.9 does not work with my firmware, as my phone aborts during the sync process. Or perhaps there is some other problem, but I’ll let you know once I’ve updated firmware.
How does one sync e61 with itunes? I’ve not seen that before…
May 23rd, 2007 at 6:31 am
I am trying to get my E61 with latest 3x firmware to sync up with my OSX 10.4.9 with iSync 2.4. I have had the phone for months and have a lot of stuff in it. Mac started use only recently. each time try to sync I get aborted with message ‘There was an error getting data from the phone. The synchronization may have been cancelled on the phone.’ any advice?
May 24th, 2007 at 6:19 am
For those of you getting the error
“Device is not available or synchronization was cancelled. Close dialogs and applications on the phone and try again”
this is caused by a missing default synchronisation profile. Instructions on how to create one are here:
http://blog.nominet.org.uk/tech/2007/05/23/problem-connecting-nokia-e65-to-isync/
June 4th, 2007 at 4:06 am
why not simply use Itunes Agent - http://ita.sourceforge.net/
also works for your synchronizing all your toys, incl. Oakleys Thump etc.

Any ideas? Any 3rd party products that will work?

Hi Pablo. Sorry for the late reply. You can get free nokia isync plugins form my site here. http://www.s60themes.co.uk. Thanks regards Paul.
November 22nd, 2007 at 2:37 am
I had the same syncing problems for a long time on my Nokia E61i. I tried the plugin from Nokia site it worked for a while but then it didn’t update any contacts that I add on my phone to the mac.
However, if you create another user on your mac (OSX 10.4.10) (without installing the Nokia plugin), it works very well via Bluetooth. My friends tell me that the address book library files on the mac could possibly be the problem. When you create a new user, the library files are reset.
Final thoughts: Most of the initial information that turns up after a search, on this issue, could be misleading. If this trick works for you, reseting the address book library files may help.
