Two Tone Nokia E61

I can't get enough of Nokia E61 mods! I haven't gotten around to try it myself yet so I take great pleasure in looking at what other Nokia E61 owners have created.

Machani from British Columbia sent me an email with these pictures of a nice two tone Nokia E61. Machani writes:

I was particularly interested in modding my E61, without using paint. So I ordered a blue E61 housing kit from eBay (seller in Singapore). The housing I received was much darker in colour than the one pictured in eBay. In fact the blue housing is deep indigo blue.

I followed the excellent instructions here and was able to install the new housing without a problem. I did make a change, however, to the standard housing mod. Since I wanted to keep the original Nokia logo in the front and back, I used the original silver-grey front and back top covers with the new blue front and back housing.

Note: the front top cover with the Nokia logo can be separated from the front face plate by gently prying it open. There is a backing double sided tape thatholds the front top cover in place, but it can be separated quite easily.

When attaching the ORIGINAL front top cover to the NEW front housing, I recommend using some double-sided tape to keep the front top cover firmly in place on the front housing.

Thanks for sharing Machani!

Do you have photos of a modded Nokia E61 you want to share with us? Drop me a note.

Neither the original nor the new housing is metal. Both are of plastic with a metallic surface finish.

The new (eBay) housing is lighter and, on first impression, flimsier than the original Nokia housing. However, the new housing is actually quite tough. I dropped my phone once after installing the new housing and it held up fine.

    Some tips:
The new housing fits snugly. When installing the new housing, the torx screw must be tight but not over tight.

The new power button rattles a bit. So I used the original one, which has a rubber backing piece, and it no rattle.

After “debugging” the new E61 two-tome housing configuration I found one minor problem - the effect of the vibration alert is somewhat deminished with the new housing.

This is because the new housing, being of lighter material, does not resonate as well as the original Nokia housing. I found that using the original back housing plate instead of the new one fixes this issue and the vibration alert is much improved.

So this results in a variation of the two tone Nokia E61, and I don’t think it looks bad either!

Can you post the exact information about the eBay seller. I’ve looked for shells from the eBay but there seems to be a few different sellers. Which one did you use?

    Thanks!

How much did you pay for it? Do they have it in Black n Pink?

    Thanks!

    Andy, fanny, Mark,
Do a search in eBay for “nokia e61 housing” and you should get a number of listings of E61 housings. Most are from Singapore and some are from Hong Kong. The vendor I bought mine from is called “awakingdragon”. He supplies a torx screw driver with the housing.

But how much did you pay for it in total including of shipping etc? Thanks!

Yall know what sucks? i bought a black housing hoping that it would look nice, it does, but its totally crap. When i installed it,i noticed that the bolt of the new housing is not connected to the housing anymore. Now i have two stuck screws on the middle part of the phone.. I suggest that you guys shouldnt buy this. Its cool thought because i have half black silver and half black to match my ad41 and my black headphones. I call it Nokia E61 Music Edition. :)

  15. john Says:

    hey,
what’s the best type of paint to use when painting the e61 housing?

    thanks,
    john
