Windows Live Messenger For Nokia E61
Windows Live Messenger is available as a download from Microsoft China. The Nokia E61 isn't listed as one of the supported devices but it works great with the Nokia E61.
You can download the client from MSN China. Click on "Messenger"
Then click on the buttom next to the blue arrow.
Choose Nokia E60 and enter your cell phone number, the verification code and click on the right buttom with the letters "PC" (download to PC)
Then you just install the application and voila - Windows Live Messenger for Nokia E61.
I know that there is a version of this application floating around on some sites but I thought I should point out where you can get the original file.
Thanks to Kimi and Marc, among others.

I like it! I got it and works well! It even has the original sounds for when someone comes online etc.
I just wonder why it’s not available from msn.com

Can any one tell me how it compares to Nimbuzz. What additional features does it provide,… ?
October 24th, 2006 at 12:56 am
Its not avaliable on other MSN site bcaz this is only free for 2 months, then it will charged through China Mobile.
Its not free after 2 months!!!!
October 24th, 2006 at 1:06 am
that software only free for 2 month, after we need register by china mobile network.
October 24th, 2006 at 1:07 am
Hey, it works beautifully for N80 too!
October 24th, 2006 at 1:09 am
CypherBit,
I only had Nimbuzz for a while, but for what I’ve seen, it is much more stable than my Nimbuzz..furthermore you get almost all original msn emoticons. I don’t know if the more recent version of Nimbuzz does show which contacts are online or that I had my settings wrong? This Live Messenger shows your online contacts grouped and your offline contacts grouped. Also the conversations are much more orderly.
It doesn’t let you send files like normal MSN.
But that isn’t really necessary for me.
All in all a big plus and thanks for the link!
October 24th, 2006 at 1:53 am
Guys, u may not notice that this software is not free after 2 months of trial period. MSN will charge u USD1.2 per month for using it afterwards.
October 24th, 2006 at 2:05 am
it is only 2 months trial?

October 24th, 2006 at 3:04 am
Hi there,
When I go to the website I can click on the “PC” button, but then nothing happens. It seems like it is not possible for me to download this. Maybe this has to do with the fact that I live in The Netherlands and of course my number refers to this?
October 24th, 2006 at 3:19 am
Maarten,
thank you for your explenation. I guess I’ll give it a try.
BTW Nimbuzz can be set to only display online contacts, but doesn’t offer the grouping functionality of online, offline contacts.

October 25th, 2006 at 1:12 am
Hello,
I’ve installed this Messenger client on my phone and logged in. But some of my contacts are not in the list while they’re online. I’ve compared it to my PC contacts list and I found out that there are 10 people less in the list of online contacts than on the PC. Anyone else have this problem?
October 25th, 2006 at 1:30 am
手机号码格式有误
i think that means that your phone number has some problems
October 25th, 2006 at 1:37 am
I’m wondering how the going to collect the money, or will te program simply not work any more?
October 25th, 2006 at 4:19 am
Interesting, I’m liking this client very much. Though I’m confused about this whole 2 month trial deal….I guess we all have to wait till its over to find then….anyways, thanks for the link!
October 25th, 2006 at 4:48 am
Does anyone have any problem connecting the MSN messenger through the WiFi on e61?
October 25th, 2006 at 4:54 am
Does anybody have website to the user license then!? Does the information on 2 months trial come from that website!? I’ve read it on another site as well, about the 2 months..but I’ve not found it on their website..
October 25th, 2006 at 5:37 am
MSN is ok, but what about a decent Jabber IM client? With Jabber and appropiate transports you can have any IM on your E61. If someone could point out a nice jabber client it would be great. BTW: I know there is a MIDP jabber client, but what I’d like to see is a Symbian OS native client. Oh, and Agile Messenger is also a no go since it costs money
.
October 25th, 2006 at 6:26 am
First of all a brilliant Blog! Many thanks!! I just got my E61 and going to be a regular reader!
I am also interested in the two month trial issue..any news in that matter. In fact during installation and even now there is no indicator of a trial. Could this be only for the China Mobile Users? I assume they could try to control it over the network…
Any thoughts…
October 25th, 2006 at 6:31 am
One more issue:
Can I keep MSN open while going to other applications, e.g. check my emails via BlackBerry conntect and then come back to it? I tried it twice and it always closed the application…
Would be great if somebody could help me here…

October 25th, 2006 at 7:14 am
I actually dont mind Agile messenger all that much but it refuses to connect with AOL. G-Talk works fine but AOL is a no go for some reason. I even tried IM+ and it cant even connect to either services for me. The icons just constantly are blinking like they are attempting to connect but nothing is happening. I even tried different ports for the AOL connection in IM+ but no go. Im willing to pay for the software but when Im testing it out it has to work perfect and as of yet that hasn’t happened.
October 25th, 2006 at 7:33 am
Free programs:
Hier: Quite stable, but only has MSN
EQO: Repeatedly asks for network confirmation, but great functionality with MSN, Googletalk, AIM and ICQ all-in-one!
October 25th, 2006 at 8:11 am
@ Staffan, EQO has some known issues with the e61 but they are working on it. I hope its fixed soon as this was my number one choice
the msn messenger works well but takes a while to connect though through gprs..on WiFi it connects quite fast
October 25th, 2006 at 9:00 am
Nice…this one allows me choose my network, unlike Hier. Waiting for EQO to fix the bug…that’s also my number 1 choice.
October 25th, 2006 at 9:22 am
sam, a new eqo version came out today, but they must have fixed some other issues not the main e61 ones. i still use eqo all the time, despite it not being flawless yet! it works well on 3G and wlan.
October 25th, 2006 at 9:46 am
Yoel. I use Blackberry Connect and Agile messenger on my E61. If you exit agile by pressing the red key it closes and ytou’re no longer online. If you switch out of the application by pressing and holding the applicaitons key, then switch to a different applicaiton or active standby you will remain in the IM application.
October 26th, 2006 at 12:04 am
The download button won’t work with Firefox.
Go to the MSN china link as posted above.. My pc automatically openeded the page with google translate…
Enter your pohones make, model, then enter the code as seen in the littel box (4 digit security to stop bots downloading it millions of times)
Then click the button on the right to download the installer for your phone
Sweet……….
October 26th, 2006 at 12:12 am
Thanks for the link & a great blog!
Does anyone else have a problem receiving messages? I can send messages OK, but I never receive a reply, althogh I know that my contact has sent a reply.
October 26th, 2006 at 5:38 am
Doesn’t work here. Download fine to PC - but can’t be installed on my E61 it says “Certificate error. Contact Application supplier”
Any tips?
October 26th, 2006 at 6:24 am
手机号码格式有误 means the format of the phone number is incorrect. Cellphone numbers used in China are different from land phone numbers, in terms of format. Cellphone numbers don’t contain any area code and always start with “13…”. And the length of each number is always eleven.
October 26th, 2006 at 6:35 am
Cyberdog, thanks found a way for BB as well!
Markus, I have the same problem from time to time! Often it is also taking a while and I then get a couple of their responses on the same time..

As you can see in this screenshot, when you are asked to put in your login details, theres a little thing that makes you think that you have to have a “hotmail.com” msn address. This isn’t the case just put your full address (like address@gmail.com) and it’ll work fine.

October 26th, 2006 at 11:54 pm
According to http://mobile.msn.com/signup/Signup2.aspx, my operator in Sweden (Telenor/Vodafone) is not supported. This is probably the reason for the lack of replys from my contacts…..
October 27th, 2006 at 12:35 am
marcus, i am a telenor customer and have tried eqo and hier for msn, and both work fine.

Does anyone know a way to download, and then be able read write and view Japanese and Korean language for the e61, if your phone is originally made for the western market?
Also is there a way to view Japanese and Korean on the e61 internet browser?
November 2nd, 2006 at 1:40 am
Works on my E70.
If you have certification error or problem installing, go application manager , settings , set software installation to ‘ALL’, Online certification check to “Off”
November 2nd, 2006 at 8:12 pm
@ Mou:
actually it does, there’s a new version for E61, and it works great. the only probelm i mentioned before is that it’s not free application so the trial version lasts only five days. and i want a free one.
November 2nd, 2006 at 8:18 pm
@ Karkuvel Ram:
i believe E62 doesn’t support WiFi, so you can get a lot more from E61.
November 3rd, 2006 at 12:51 pm
works amazingly on my nokia N80 thanks
PS dont forget to put the countries code before ur mobile number. e.g. +44 for the UK
November 4th, 2006 at 8:02 am
Those waiting for EQO to patch the app for the E61/62…wait no longer. They patched it and it seemed to fix the known bugs. Tested it and only asked for my connection once. You just need to login to the website and send an sms to your phone to download the patch. Or point your phone browser to http://www.eqo.com/a
November 12th, 2006 at 6:38 am
Hi People
i tried to install it on E70 but it gives me update error, any one can help?
November 13th, 2006 at 10:08 pm
I get an error trying to connect on my E61: “Locating server failed, please try later.” Does that in both WiFi and when I try connecting to my phone’s service provider. Any ideas?
November 15th, 2006 at 11:18 pm
Marcus, many thanks Was getting that error, but all is well now.
November 27th, 2006 at 4:44 pm
I love it. It works really nicely with my Nokia N91, with Wi-Fi and all to get free internet, MSN is great. I now just need a Google Talk/Jabber app.
any ideas?

December 3rd, 2006 at 4:11 pm
Just wondering if theres any software out there thats similar to windows media player, for the e-61as real one player thats already installed only plays 3gp and mp4 files
December 11th, 2006 at 10:52 pm
This worked great in my E61. Have been using this for 1 month. After using Agile for 15 days (trial), I miss some of the features - like message history, vibration alert and the worst of them all, if I lose connection I lose the unread messages which had come when phone was in my pocket.
December 13th, 2006 at 12:34 pm
this application doesnt shows all the people online. for e.g i have 36/132 people online in msn (pc) and when i switch to n80 using the mmim, it shows only 21/132.. anyone knows whats happening here?

I downloaded the file but it won’t install it says certification fault??? I just got my E61 yesterday. Really hoping to find MSN Messenger and Skype that work. Anyone any suggestions?

I switched to using EQO (www.eqo.com) for now, which is a instant messaging client that works with MSN, Yahoo, ICQ and others. The interface is not as intuitive as MMIM, but it is still free.
January 5th, 2007 at 10:37 pm
So this is Chinese only ? ( I just get squares for each symbol), Does anyone knows where the initial post picture was taken from?
January 5th, 2007 at 10:46 pm
Hi Molopa,
I took the screenshot a few months back. This was always a solution for the Chinese market. It worked fine in the beginning (without subscription) but they have probably plugged the holes.

Click the blue link just under title MSN Messenger.
After this, you will see a separate window which is a disclaimer. Click the left button which says ACCEPT.

I installed Live Messenger v1.00 quite a few months back (http://www.sharefiles.us/207230) I connect over wifi and it works great.
When I logged in today, I was asked to subscribe - 10rmb monthly fee - to use MSN live services. I am in china on chinamobile. Does anyone know what services MSN mobile live provides? If it means ppl can send text my phone through messenger, it may be worth it.
The website for chinamobile is all in chinese and the English site doesn’t list china as providing mobile services.

Anyone has a MSN 2.0 they can email? I’ve been using MSN 1.0 on E61 n would love to upgrade.
cheers guys.
February 26th, 2007 at 5:03 pm
The Certificate error can be solved by allowing all software to be installed without certifying it. This setting van be changed inside the application manager within “tools”.
When I install the program, letters appear in blocks, like it wants to display chinese signs, but can’t.
February 26th, 2007 at 9:44 pm

Yesterday I tried installing something called TurboMSN on my phone, just to check it out. Meanwhile the link for my currently installed Windows Live Messenger that I got from msclient.msn.com.cn disappered from my phone, so I uninstalled it. Then I went to get it again and saw that it is now version 2.0 which is only in chinese.. damn…
Does anyone have the old version 1.0 for Nokia 6260? It is the one now found at http://mclient.msn.com.cn/dl/543.sis but I need the version 1.0…

“Sorry, this service is not available yet outside of China mainland, Hongkong and Taiwan. For more information please go to mclient.msn.com.cn”
Strange thing is that for a coupleof days this client actually did work on my N95, until today when this message all of a sudden popped up!
Anybody has a work-around? I tried re-installing all different versions but can’t get it to work anymore. What should I do? This client is far better and look much better than all the others!
Help me out!

Anybody has ideas how to convince the guys in china to set it back open again for the US and Europe (where I am located)?
I loved this messenger client the most!
April 26th, 2007 at 11:12 am
The same thing happened to me as well, I’ve been using this client for ages and now it does not work. If anyone has a fix, please post it here!
April 29th, 2007 at 10:14 am
For those who are outside China, Taiwan, and HK - if you have a fix for the above mentioned problem - please share!
I’m still getting this message…and it’s really bugging me.
“Sorry, this service is not available yet outside of China mainland, Hongkong and Taiwan. For more information please go to mclient.msn.com.”
I tried Fring, but it’s nowhere near as user-friendly as the Windows Live Mobile Messenger program.

Here’s another free Messenger application (Java/MIDP) targeted for qwerty devices: koti.mbnet.fi/noxo/noxomsn.htm

I have a Nokia N95 and a China Mobile GoTone SIM card (not pre-paid). I went to http://mclient.msn.com.cn, entered my info, and received the SMS with the link to download the 544.sisx file. I also downloaded the sisx file to my PC. The install process starts (I get a warning about installing the software, plus a message about what the software will do, etc.), but then I get an Update Error.
I’ve tried setting the phone language to chinese, installing to phone memory and the SD card, all with the same result. I saw a previous message about this “Update Error”, but I didn’t see any answers.
I see lots of posts saying how great MSN Live Messenger is on the phone, so I’d really like to get this working.
One note: The Nokia N95 comes with an IM client already installed, but I don’t know much about what it is. If someone knows the Server Name and Web Address of the server for MSN in China (via China Mobile), I may be able to just use the already installed IM client. This may also be the reason for the Update Error?
May 4th, 2007 at 2:19 am
I got version 1.0.0 and I get the same error - suddenly just stopped working for me. I tried downloading version 2.0 also, but I still get the same error…so those of you who request version 1.0, forget it, doesnt work.
May 4th, 2007 at 2:27 am
Sai Yathiraj: Since 3rd edition, applications need to be signed with a certificate. My guess is that you get this error because the link refers to a release of the application signed with a certificate for a different model. I suggest you go to the webpage, choose your own model and download…but it seems that we are denied access anyway, so I guess it doesnt really matter…
May 5th, 2007 at 9:13 pm
Yes, down load the file and try to install on my E61 to update the old version but can not be done. E61 replay ‘update error’ eather install to handset memory or memory card.
Any one can provide your experience and comments?

[...] Microsoft has its own client also. Pocket MSN (now renamed to Live Messenger) comes pre-installed on Windows Mobile smartphones and Pocket PCs. You can also buy it from Microsoft if you don’t already have it. They don’t have an official client for any other type of phone, at least not in the US. Interestingly enough it was discovered that the MSN China site has a version for S60 Symbian phones, which I have to admit I think was the best mobile MSN client of them all. I say was because unfortunately that application no longer works outside of China and Taiwan. [...]

Saudi girl: You may want to contact Microsoft about that, as Ed is not affiliated with Nokia or Microsoft at all. I was disappointed when I found out they changed that, too.
May 19th, 2007 at 3:54 pm
Thanks for stepping in Gelan. I’m only guessing here but I think must be some exclusive deal made, limited to China.
Cheers

Ed,
We know you’re really Bill Gates. Why didnt you make a worldwide version, for pete’s sake?!?

Hi there,
I ve got windows live messenger in english for e61, but when i log in to, it says that the applictaion does.nt work outside China , Hongong and malaysia.
Need a messenger that can be used in pakistan
May 26th, 2007 at 3:48 am
Why not just use Fring? It has MSN, Google Talk, Skype and Twitter support. It’s a big plus that you can also use VOIP to make cheap phone calls to people all over the world. Useful to keep memory used on the phone down.
I set this up on a Nokia N95. Works really well.
May 28th, 2007 at 3:01 am
In fring you can´t add new msn contacts. That is a big minus… I want agile messenger free.

I GOT WINDOWS LIVE MESSENGER 2 ON MY NOKIA N95 BUT WHEN I SIGN IN IT DOESNT LET ME N IT SAYS THIS SERVICE IS NOT AVAILABLE OUTSIDE CHINA ETC PLZ CAN SUM 1 TEL ME WHAT THE PROBLEM IS
June 12th, 2007 at 11:05 pm
on my E61, I get the same messages about not working outside china as everyone else.
However, I used my wireless network and a packet sniffer to connect and found that its connecting to a server in china.
In my firewall settings I played with redirecting the traffic to the same server that the live messenger on my desktop PC uses and hey presto !, its working again.
Now where do microsoft hide the settings within the E61 to change the server messenger is trying to login with ?
June 13th, 2007 at 1:20 pm
STEVEN B WHAT IS A PACKET SNIFFER IV TRIED USIN MY WIRELESS NETWROK BUT IT STILL WONT LET ME CONNECT ANY SUGGESTIONS THANX
June 13th, 2007 at 1:55 pm
HI, A packet sniffer if a program you run on another computer that listens to the network and tells you what is going on.
Using the mobile network I cant connect, using my wireless network at home with my firewall configured to redirect to UK MSN servers instead of MSN servers in china works !.
Using anyone elses wireless wont work as their firewall will not be setup like mine at home, its advanced networking at its best
I’ve been trying to find where within the E61 the files are stored to edit so that I can make the change permanent and not only when I am at home using my own wireless.
Is there a registry within the Symbian OS does anyone know and can it be edited ?
Cheers,

Now there’s a new, improved and much much better client out there. It’s for all S60 phones and it’s Nokias own client released for 5 N-series devices in Sweden. The sis file and instructions to install this on other phones can however be found at http://www.endera.eu/sis/

If the above download link doesn’t work anymore, try this website instead: http://www.endera.eu/sis/
Updated 2007-07-02: Now it seems to work for real!
Note: This only works for Nokia devices with Symbian OS 9.1 (S60 3rd Edition).
Instructions:
1. Download http://www.endera.eu/sis/WindowsLive_S60_3_0_v_1_0_6141_Signed.rar
2. Unrar the file
2.a Google if you don’t now how to unrar (or what the hell, download Winrar from http://www.rarlabs.com.
3. Transfer both files to the device.
3.a If you don’t know how. Google is your friend or maybe you shouldn’t be doing this…
4. Install in this order: 1. dep.sisx, 2. WindowsLive_S60_3_0_v_1_0_6141_Signed.sis.
5. Enjoy.
August 13th, 2007 at 2:14 am
Who is http://www.endera.eu/sis/ ?
Why is there no “official” download?
Where did this file come from?

Hi guys! I have manage to find a sotware that u can recieve all ur hotmail emails and I have tried and I am using also. It work in all symbian phones you just need to download it an use it. And after downloading u can use it u go to message and scroll to Windows Live and after that u have to synchronise e-mail but u have to be pation cos it will take sometime for a fist time so each time u use it u have to synchronise e-mail.
