GoTalkMobile - Google Talk Client
Hot on the heels of the post about the Google Gmail application for Nokia E61 here is a quick look at a J2ME client for Google Talk from a company called GoTalkMobile. To make things abundantly clear - this is an application from a third party and not from Google.
Nokia E61 is not listed as one of the supported devices but the E70 is. I downloaded the version for the Nokia E70 and it worked fine on my Nokia E61. The application can be downloaded directly from the web to your Nokia E61 using the “Services” wap browser. Just access http://wap.gotalkmobile.com but remember to use the “Services” browser. You can also install the application via your PC. Just download the Jar or Jad file and install it on your device.

The application works OK with a few anomalies but since the application is free it is hard to complain. Although the main feature is enabling Google Talk on your mobile device the application is also integrated with Google Mail.

The application lets you add, rename, remove and block contacts. It runs in the background but crashed and quit a few times while I was using it. However, it is quite fast and very intuitive. It’s definitely worth a try!
Thanks Manoj!

I actually managed to install Gtalkmobile but unfortunately I am receiving the “Pipe Closed” error for some reason. I tried socket connection first and that totally crapped the program out; then the HTTP came closer but eventually errored out. I figured I’d also try the MGTalk posted above but the same thing happens, it cannot establish a connection of any sort.
If this problem stems from Cingular’s crippling of the J2ME support on the E62 I will be extremely angry. It is such a great phone and Cingular just tore it a new one by making it impossible for J2ME apps to be installed/work properly.

I’m on an E61 on t-mobile USA… with the t-mobile web ($5.99) plan… Same “Pipe closed” error.

Tunde,
I have heard that T-Mobile and Cingular are very strict when it comes to application access to the net. For Cingular specifically, it is INCREDIBLY difficult to have J2ME apps operate on the phone without them being signed by Verisign (or some equivalent). If they ARE signed but dont have a cert from Cingular themselves, then the program will ALWAYS ask if its ok to access the data network. For example, when I use Google Maps on my E62, I have to constantly “accept” the warning that google maps is accessing the network. In the configuration for “Suite Settings” for the GMaps app the only options it gives me for network access are “None” and “Always Ask”. A properly signed/certified J2ME app would have “None”, “Always Ask”, “Ask First Time Only”, and “Never Ask”.
Apparently Cingular feels that J2ME apps are too dangerous (viruses?) to their network so the rest of us knowledgeable folk have to suffer. I know Ed has a Cingular E62 but Im wondering how much he has used it or played with it. Any idea what the deal is with this Ed? Inquiring minds want to know
I personally just wanna kick Cingular straight in the throat for screwing it up cause its going to be difficult to get them to change the firmware.

Hi Cameron, Tunde et. al.

I’m a fairly peaceful kind of guy but in this case I might throw in a kick or two
It works great on my E61 but I haven’t been able to get it to work on my E62. I get the same error messages as Tunde. I tried both Socket and HTML connnection but
November 6th, 2006 at 1:29 pm
Hehe…well 1 kick is better than nothing! I just cant believe that they restricted such a popular form of building apps for mobile devices. *SIGH* Whats really annoying is that Cingular will not provide ANY support to these apps even though it is their firmware thats causing the issues.
I wonder if trying to get the stock Nokia Firmware on the E62 would fix the problem? Of course, where and how would I be able to get that

GoogleTalk works like a charm also on N70 and N90 downloaded from the link above, if someone wonders….

Forgive me if I’m wrong, but this app is for Google Chat and not Google Talk right??
November 11th, 2006 at 11:07 am
hey there.. i tried the GTALK.. it works very beautifuly..BUT the only problem that seems to be there is, there is no TALK feature..Ofcourse i m able to chat and check new mails and all, but i cant “TALK” i.e voice chat with anyone.. If anyone knows how that would also be done, it would be great..i couldnt find any option to do that.. Anyways.. Thanks for the post

So no luck for us with Cingular? I too am trying gotalkmobile on the new Blackjack with the same errors. “Closed Pipe” on the HTTP and total lock up on the Socket layer.
No Cingular connect? If not, I wonder if it is so they get the extra cash on text messages for IM’s???

Hi Anuj!
http://www.nimbuzz.com are offering chat and also voice (or will soon do). I am running a testversion for them and it is for example possible to call from the mobile true Nimbuzz to ,for example, GoogleTalk. This is not free because you call a gateway (a landline number) in your country (the coast depends on what contract you have with your service provider) but it is possible and cool.
Here is also another company offering kind of similair service
http://www.talkonaut.com/
…and here is one

…and here

and so on …….

Does this application work a WIFI connection? Their website mentioned about the GPRS connectivity, but i didn’t notice about the WIFI.

Hello Sonny!
GoTalkMobile works also with Wi-Fi

This app is great on the E61, but not on the E62. For some reason the E62’s OS is much much slower than the E61. I have played nes (nintendo) games with ines on the E61 and they are great, but when i tried them out on the E62 it crashed the phone.

It doesn’t work on my E61( I set up login and password, click “connect” and the application shows me dark blue screen with some making circles dots and title “login sent…” for indeterminate time. What do I do wrong?

Hi, try this ap called skittle, its revolutionary, theres basic chat like GoogletlakMobile and Mgtalk but theres two other interesting applications, Skittle Group Chat.
What is that? is the Abitily to create a CHATROOM IRC off your mobile :-O
thats soo cool, create a chatroom off your phone and invite your freinds to chat in a room.
I tried it with 50 contacts and it works, the site claims 4400 contacts were tested, im sure that will kill ones airtime. I tried it on a nokia 6600 and it works fine!!
Enjoy

Hi there,
Can anyone tell me if the google talk software will work on an E61i? Also i am on Orange/hutch in Mumbai, India. I have enabled the blackberry service but to surf the web i have to log on using GPRS. whereas i have heard if i had a blackberry handset then i wouldnt have needed the GPRS plan to surf the web and use google talk. Is this true or do i have a way to bend my way thro it?

I’d prefer fring (www.fring.com) over gotalk as it supports MSN, Skype, SIP, ICQ along with Google Talk. Moreover, I supports VoIP (actually free as it no longer requires Skype credit or call-backs). I’m using it over the Airtel EDGE network in my E50 and it works great. The voice is clear and hoes not crack. If u’ve wifi then nothing like it.

Do either mgtalk or skittle work on a lgshine KU970 with vodafone at all ..?
