Carrier Settings for Unlocked Nokia E61
A few readers have asked me if it is difficult to set up an unlocked Nokia E61 to work with a GSM carrier - it's not.
If you are new to using unlocked GSM devices you might wonder how you get the right settings from the carrier you choose to use the unlocked Nokia E61 with.
I almost wish it was harder, but anyone can do it. Here are the easy steps to set up your unlocked Nokia E61 to work with virtually any GSM carrier.
There is an online Nokia Phone Configurator that will do the job for you. All you need to do is to enter the appropriate information and the settings will be sent to you via an SMS.
Enter the phone model - Nokia E61.

Choose the country where you will use the Nokia E61
Confirm your selection and enter your cellphone number. An SMS will be sent to you.

The website will return a code that you will need to enter on your device in order to access and save the carrier settings.

Enter the code on your Nokia E61 and save the settings.
That's it. It will take you less than five minutes. I have had no problems getting the settings to use the device on Cingular's network. The only setting that I didn't receive was for the native IM application. It seems as those settings are closely guarded by the carriers and not easily accessible unless you buy the device from the carrier. However, there are several 3rd party IM applications that works great on the Nokia E61. More about that in a later post.
Now head over to the Nokia phone configurator and set up your Nokia E61.

This tutorial is great with the screenshots from the phone and everything…
A couple really basic questions I have:
At what stage do you install the sim card? Does installing the sim card transfer you phone number to the new phone? (e.g. I have a treo 650 I assume I would just pop the card out of that phone and stick in the E61 straight away)
Do you have a medianet data plan or the other type?
Thanks so much for all your help!

I have a similar question. In order to access my various IMAP and POP email will I need anything more than medianet on Cingular?
I currently only have a voice plan and wonder if there is any issue with upgrading to the medianet with this unlocked phone. Is there an unlimited data plan for Cingular that works best with this phone and web/email?
Thanks!

Thanks for the kind comments.
Just move your SIM card from your Treo to the Nokia E61. Your phone number “resides” in the SIM card. That is one of the great things with GSM versus CDMA technology - with GSM/SIM cards you can just move your number by physically moving the SIM card.
After you pop in the SIM card in the E61 you turn it on and you will get a signal. Go to the configurator to push down the other settings (such as data etc.)
I use Cingular’s MEdia Net for my data service.
Thanks for stopping by!

One other comment about getting your contacts over to your new E61. While your own phone number is always on the SIM card, your rolodex(contacts) is not necessarily on the SIM. If you have a treo 650, chances are your contacts are also on your computer. If that’s the case, use PC suite to synchronize the device to your contacts on your computer.
Email is simple as well. If you have a POP / IMAP email account, there is an email client on the phone that works really well. Just subscribe to a data plan and you’re email ready to go.

Still looking for where to get my E61 - can anyone recommend an Ebayer or other option? Someone locally was supposed to get a shipment but I haven’t heard and am very anxious to get one of these! So - where do you get one of these unlocked gems?

Hi Joe,
I have used Expansys several times. They might not be the cheapest but I like them. Their service is great and I trust them. You might want to check out a few other stores. I saw that http://www.mobilbee.com has a very good price listed but I have never used them. Before you placed the order you might want to call them, just to see that they are respsonsive. If they get back to you in a timely manner I would feel comfortable placing my order. That’s at least my two cents.
Let us know your experience when you do place the order.

I really like the Nokia Phone Configurator feature. It is really as easy as 123. You don’t need to physically entering each item in the setting of the phone. Doing that on a phone without a qwert keyboard is a real pain in the ass. I have configured almost all branded mobile phones. Nokia is absolutely the easiest one! Should give credit to them!

Can you provide me with assiatnce on the Cingular settings for an unlocked E60. I have tried the Nokia configurator with no success

Has anyone been successful using blackberry connect software AND connecting to internet? I’m a Cingular user, and I’ve download the above settings from Nokia site. So far, to use browser, I have to turn off blackberry connection.
July 1st, 2006 at 11:03 am
Hi Terry,
Can you describe your problem in more detail? Can you get a data connection so that you can use the web? Does the SMS work? What is the problem.
July 1st, 2006 at 11:07 am
Hi Paul,
I just switched email solution on my Nokia E61 so I don’t have BlackBerry installed. I will try it out after the long weekend.
July 1st, 2006 at 4:17 pm
The blackberry connect software works fine. You can send email, make calls, sms without problem. However, when you launch browser, you get a blank white screen, the bar on top advances, but browser times out before connection is made. Other people have mentioned the same problem. Once I was able to disconnect the blackberry connection and get the browser to work. You can’t, however, simply turn blackberry connection back on without restarting phone. When you restart phone you are back to scenario where blackberry/voice/sms works but internet doesn’t work.

I am running my E61 with blackberry connect and am getting email and also able to surf the web at the same time… It works flawlessly!

Hi Cyberdoggie,
Is your carrier Cingular?
July 3rd, 2006 at 2:54 pm
Yes I am using Cingular. I use the connection titled Internet-GPRS. Access point name: wap.cingular
Username: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM

Seems Cingular works but i am having a problem with T-mobile and getting my e-mail from sbcglobal.net I have spoken with T-mobile as well as Sbc teir 2 tech and it seems everything is in order. But when I try and recieve it goes to update screen and in a fraction it goes no messages. Any suggestions
July 8th, 2006 at 12:41 pm
Hi GM,
It doesn’t sound like you are connecting. I would do the following. Make sure that you have a data connection that works (Can you browse the web?) Have you tried using other applications that use data (Widsets, Google Maps etc.)?
Try sending an email from the account, does that work?
I would make sure that the settings you got from SBC is correct. Did you get the right SMTP and Mail server setting? what about account name? Some times you need to enter the full account name with the …@sbc…. sometimes just the account name without the full email address.
Let us know if that works.
July 8th, 2006 at 2:08 pm
Thanks for the reply. Yes I am able to go to web.
No I cannot send e-mail
check spelling. Verified OK
pop settings OK
Whats strange is added old business account lamp2@sbcglobal.net and was able to recieve e-mails but not send. But with my personal account listed above will not up date (send or recieve). Are there third party apps. (seven etc.) that you have tried? Its really confusing. I have just switched to this device from a BB device and disconnected the BB client, and service, and added the t-zones unlimited to E61 but no sbcglobal.net mail.
July 9th, 2006 at 7:50 am
That is strange indeed, that you could at least recieve email using the same settings but for a different email address. I would completely delete the email profile and set up a new to see whether that could potentially work.
I have used BlackBerry connect, ActiveSync and Intellisync and they all work great. I use the native email app for Google Mail.
July 10th, 2006 at 11:13 am
Hi,
I was playing with Nokia support site, and I figure out that you can access the ADVANCED setup site with this url: https://nokiags.wdsglobal.com/advanced?siteLanguageId=118
There you can download Push to Talk, Email and Streaming configs
July 10th, 2006 at 12:22 pm
Hi Fgamio,
That is great. Thanks for sharing the URL. I will update the post with your information. Once again, thanks for contributing.
July 10th, 2006 at 7:35 pm
Well good news, finally was able to speak with a tier 2 level tech at T-Mobile and was able to configure device for sbcglobal.net
Settings:
User name mobile number plus :1 at end
incoming mail server myemail.t-mobile.com
access point t-mobile internet
pop 3
out going mail server user name mobile number plus :1 at end
mail server mye-mail.t-mobile.com
access point t-mobileinternet
security ports off
July 10th, 2006 at 8:24 pm
GM,
Thanks for the follow up and sharing the information. That will come in handy for users with similar issues.
Glad it is working now!
July 14th, 2006 at 8:33 pm
1.Toying between taking it on Cingular or Tmobile. Tmobile shows a BB plan for $19 and another for $29…would you advise one over the other? you have a terrific blog…congratulations
2. any thoughts on the e61 vs. the sony p990i?
July 15th, 2006 at 5:39 am
I actually had a cleaner install of the Cingular settings from the Cingular support page. I downloaded settings for the Nokia 9300 which have worked fine for browsing. My Gmail account needed tweaking to the pop.googlemail.com server, and then worked as well.
July 15th, 2006 at 8:30 am
Hi Krishh,
Thanks for your kind comment. I use Cingular and I don’t really know a lot about the T-Mobile plans. However, I do have friends who are using the Nokia E61 with BB on T-mobile.
I’m too busy to keep up with my E61 and the E70 to even look at other devices.
Hi Michael,
That is a good point. If you do have a device that is supported by the carrier it is probably better to start there. Also, if the device is bought *from* the carrier it should come loaded with all the necessary settings.
Cheers

Hello there..just some headache. i am a cingular customer. evrytime I try to connect to get e-mail (gmail) i get either no packet data servie (when I use cingular ISP as access point) or no mail when I use internet GPRS.
has anyone else experience the same?
if so what is the correct config for cingular? I was told by cingular that i should not use this phone as it is not supported by their network.
July 17th, 2006 at 10:28 am
Hello Ira,
I assume you are trying to connect to gmail using the mail application but can you browse the net with the web browser? when you go to, say, http://www.yahoo.com do you connect successfully? I would first rule out any network connection errors. If you can connect then I would make sure you use the right settings for gmail:
Username: full gmail address
Password: your gmail password
Incoming Mail server: pop.googlemail.com
Access point: Your Access Point
Mailbox name: Gmail
Mailbox type: pop3
Security: SSl.tls
Port: 995
Secure login: off
Outgoing mail server:
my email address: yourgmail address
Username: gmail adddress
password: your pass
outgoing mail server: smtp.googlemail.com
Access point: Your Access Point
Security: SSl.tls
Port: 465
July 17th, 2006 at 10:45 pm
I am currently using my unlocked E61 (att formerly cingular, unlimited data via mmode) and obviously having some issues with my settings.
I have downloaded the Mail for Exchange and properly entered in all my information except i am having troubles. My exchange provider has indicated i need to use the GPRS connection as the WAP or MMS won’t work. And then he goes on to say, the normal values for the GPRS access point are:
For ATT -> the APN is proxy, with no username or password
For Cingular -> the APN is ISP.CINGULAR, the username is ISP@CINGULARGPRS.COM and the password CINGULAR1
But where do i enter these settings and is it necessary.
While at home & while connected to my WLAN everything is working. At home, while not connected to my WLAN, everything works fine thru the GPRS. However, while at work, i am unable to receive any emails but can receive phone calls. Is this because my access point is not set right? Under device mgr. do i need to setup a profile or is this for a continous WLAN connection…
I have also downloaded the SMS settings from Cingular but changed my access point in email connections to gprs as indicted from my exchange provider.
your thoughts,

anyone have the setting for yahoo mail setup on the e61?
thanks,
todd
July 19th, 2006 at 9:39 am
Hi Todd,
As far as I know, unless you have a premium account with Yahoo or some sort of SBC DSL/Yahoo account you cannot access Yahoo via Pop. It’s a premium service.
July 19th, 2006 at 10:31 am
i do have a premium account which enables pop.
thanks,
todd
July 19th, 2006 at 11:10 am
Hi Todd,
Sorry I don’t have premium yahoo so I don’t have the settings. If you do find them please post them here.
Thanks

can i know the settings for configuring im on my e60
July 28th, 2006 at 7:13 am
Hi Shrikant,
Read the post about IM for more details information about your choices as far as IM clients are concerned. Unless you bought your device from a carrier, who provisioned your device with IM to work, you cannot use the internal client. But there are other choices - once again, please look in the IM blog entry.
Cheers

Hi there, im contemplating whether or not to buy the E61 and ive decided to buy an unlocked E61 online. However, i am new to the GSM network as ive been with verizon all my life. my question is, what exactly do i have to do once i get my phone to get it(web browsing, email, calling) up and running with cingulars network? i know something about a SIM card but not enough…for example i have no idea about how to buy DATA plans…please respond ASAP. (cingular users, provide some procedure please? lol)
July 28th, 2006 at 11:50 am
Let me start this and hopefully other Cingular users can jump in. All you really have to do is to go in to a Cingular store and sign up for a plan that suites you.
I got the unlimited data plan and since I am a heavy data user that works fine for me but you might want to start out with a 5 MB plan or something smaller and then bump up your data portion of the plan.
Don’t let the salespeople convince you to buy an expensive phone. Remember, all you want is the SIM card, which you will insert in the E61. Any free phone will do. Just “harvest” the SIM card.
It’s really easy to take out the SIM card and move it to the E61. (And the beauty of GSM since your phone number resides on a moveable chip)
Follow the instructions above when you have inserted the SIM in the E61 and you will be good to go. If you have any further problems post here again.
Cheers!
July 29th, 2006 at 7:39 am
I’ve got my e61 configured and it seems to be able to connect to the web and surf however if I attempt to go to google.com I get an “unsupported content type”. Also I’ve notice that web sites look different through Internet-GPRS than through a local wifi connection…any way to fix this?
July 29th, 2006 at 8:11 am
Hi Ryan,
Is your carrier by any chance Cingular? and do you get the “unsupported content type” when you go to Google.com using INternet-GPRS?
July 29th, 2006 at 8:23 am
Yes and yes.
July 29th, 2006 at 8:59 am
I had the same problem. I am planning to write about this in a blog post but I am still doing some research on this. However, this is my guess:
When you are using Cingular’s proxy servers to access Google on the browser, Google tries to serve you a WAP page. It shouldn’t do that since the browser is a “normal” browser. I am not sure if the problem is on Google’s side or Cingular’s side (perhaps somewhere in the middle). But my workaround was to erase the proxy server setting for the access point. go to settings > connections > acccess points > advanced settings > Proxy servers. Erase the server (write it down the number in case you need it) do the same with the proxy port. save and try connecting. This time you will access the internet without the standard cingular proxy and it works for me. No more do I get that message “unsupported content type” Please note that you need to close the AP you are making changes to so you must make sure it is not in use.
I will make a proper blog entry about this in a day or two. Need to get coffee now…
July 29th, 2006 at 10:39 am
Good find, it works now….wonder what the benefits of using the Cingular proxy are though.
July 29th, 2006 at 10:41 am
I also notice that when the proxy server setting are in place I’m unable to use Mail For Exchange through Internet-GPRS.
July 29th, 2006 at 2:59 pm
when i buy the phone i’m going to need a data plan but can someone please tell me how much data ill exactly need? im going to be emailing and surfing the web frequently so i dont want to go over what my plan limits in terms of the data.
July 29th, 2006 at 3:44 pm
Glad it worked out Ryan. Thanks for the update.
Hi Mitesh,
Most carriers let you adjust your data plans quite easily. Start off somewhere in the middle of the spectrum and keep an eye on the data logs. Or, get an unlimited data plan. They are not that expensive and you can go ahead and use the device as much as you want!
July 29th, 2006 at 7:31 pm
Anyone have luck setting up an E60 with Cingular? I can get the phone to work, WiFi but no luck with web browsing. I have used the Nokia configurator but no luck. Any help appreciated./Jim
August 4th, 2006 at 7:17 am
This website was very helpful… i have three questions.
#1 - i want to connect to a wireless system at home using DSL. it requires a user name and password. I am having a hard time doing this. my device detects the wireless network, but i dont get prompted for the user name and password and thus i cant’ use my wi-fi.
#2. I use microsoft outlook on my computer. Can i use this on my E61? and if so, how?
#3 I synched my contacts from my outlook to my device. No matter how many times i’ve tried to adjust it both on my computer and the device (settings, editing labels)… my contacts are always viewed last name first. How can i fix this? i tried the help guide and did what it said, but it does not work… PLEASE HELP!!!
Thank you

This site has been very encouraging. I’m hoping I can find the help I need. I have a Nokia E61 (unlocked), and my carrier is T-Mobile. I have the BB data plan. I downloaded the settings to my Nokia from your site. However, I still cannot send or receive email. I am able to serve the web through the MMS but not the t-Mobile internet. What can I do to fix these problems? I have tried everything I can think of and nothing works.
Thanks so much!!!
August 5th, 2006 at 10:46 pm
Hi Stillh2o,
It can be a number of issues. My friend is using Nokia E61 with BB on T-mobile so it is possible. Did you double check your settings? I would unistall BB and reinstall it again if it doesn’t work.
August 5th, 2006 at 10:55 pm
I agree it is probably my settings, but I can’t figure out how to fix it. I have managed to figure out how to receive email and send email, but not at the same time. Here are my settings:
Incoming:
username: stillh2o
password: *****
incoming mail server: pop.charter.net
access point: MMS
mailbox name: t-mobile usa
mailbox type: pop3
security ports: off
port: 110
Outgoing:
outgoing mail server: myemail.t-mobile.com
access point: t-mobileinternet
port: 25
I can send and receive email with these settings. The problem is, they won’t stay like this. The access point changes in the outgoing mail to MMS. Any suggestions?
Quite honestly, I have no idea how to uninstall the BB if that is what I will need to do.
Thanks for replying and trying to help.

All,
To admin, thanks so much for your help on the E61. It has been quite valuable. I have two questions:
1) Is there any special that needs to be set up for US Cingular for receiving SMS messages?
2) Has anyone set up a .mac email account on the E61? I keep running into a “time out” problem.
My thanks in advance and best regards to all.
Mango Joe
August 8th, 2006 at 12:19 pm
Hi Mango,
The SMS message centre settings should be provisioned automatically. If you don’t have them the message center for cingular is +13123149810.
I have no problems connecting to .Mac. Check your settings. This is what I used.
IMAP
you@mac.com
Incoming mail: mail.mac.com
outgoing mail: smtp.mac.com
Cheers!

Can anyone help me?!
I have downloaded the email setting from the Nokia web site and I still cannot get email. It says no packet data. I have the Blackberry unlimited data plan. I have tried everything I can think of. I have called T-Mobile and each person there tells you something different. None the less, the things they have told me haven’t worked either. I love my Nokia E61, but it’s not doing me much good if I can’t get email. I haven’t even been able to download Adobe onto it.
It’s all so frustrating. This site seems so knowledgable. I am so hoping you can help me.
Thanks!!!!

August 8th, 2006 at 4:45 pm
Hi Still2ho,
Are you trying to set up your BB to connect with a POP3 mailbox account? BlackBerry Connect works with Exchange and Lotus Notes. Use the native email client to access your POP email acccount.
You do not need BB connnect plan to access you plain POP email.
August 9th, 2006 at 10:57 am
Hi,
I have a Nokia e61 with Cingular and everything is working fine except peridoically throughout the day, I lose my data capabilities (though I can receive phone calls). When I go to the connection manager and look under active data connection, it says CINGULAR INTERNET and under that “connnecting”, though it never reconnects unless I shut down the phone and restart.
Any help in resolving this issue would be much appreciated. I have goodlink on my phone and live on this (for work as well as otherwise).
Thanks,
Dan
August 9th, 2006 at 2:41 pm
Hi Dan,
I haven’t seen this. Have you tried using a different AP? I would try using a different AP to see if the problem persists?
Cheers

I’ll try, thanks. My other access points have the same settings, just different names. You think it makes a difference?

August 9th, 2006 at 10:45 pm
I am not getting the settings sent to me.
I entered everying OK and incoming SMS work fine. any ideas?
I live in Canada, so I should type +1403xxxxxxx right?
August 10th, 2006 at 10:15 am
Admin,
I changed the ap - even wiped out the current ones and “rebuilt” them - but to no avail. Love everything about this phone (wish Goodlink was integrated better) but if data capability isn’t reliable, I may have to go back to my BB 8700C (with which I have never had these data issues - also Cingular).
Would love to hear any more ideas.
Thanks,
Dan

My E61 is on it’s way! I’m a cingular user with a a media max plan. I currently get push email on my Windows Media device. Questions:
1. Can I use push email from MS exchange sp2? Mobile active sync for contacts/calendar/tasks?
2. If I switch to BB Connect do I have to change my data plan to a BB plan? Can’t I use the Media Max plan?
Thanks!
August 10th, 2006 at 6:53 pm
HI Mark,
You can get push email from your Exchange server and it syncs with contact calendar and addresses. (Not tasks)
2. You need a BB plan if you plan to use BB.
Cheers!
August 11th, 2006 at 9:36 pm
I cannot get my E61 settings to work for my outgoing mail. I am not using BB connect. If I can’t get this fixed I’m going to have to go back to my BB 8700g. I just can’t see a reason to use the Nokia if I cannot utilize my email….or IM for that matter. Any suggestions before I turn to the dark side (BB)?
Thanks,
stillh2o
August 12th, 2006 at 12:43 am
Hi Stillh2o,
I’ll send you an email to try to help.
August 12th, 2006 at 5:06 am
THANK YOU SOOOOOO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have tried the T-Mobile data configuration site this morning and so far that has not fixed my email problem. I don’t even see where it changed my email settings. I can still receive email under the incoming pop.charter.net, but still no outgoing ability. Nor can I connect to instant messaging yet. I can however, surf yahoo.
Thank you for helping me.

I am a dedicated blackberry user and have been for the last 5 years. My company uses Enterprise blackberry. I have just purchased the Nokia E61 and was wondering if any one can give me some insight on how I will be able to get the E61 to work? When I set-up my BB originally, I had to insert the IMEI number from my BB into the BB Webclient. Will I be doing the same, so the webclient knows to forward the email to my new Nokia E61? Thanks for any suggestions?
August 12th, 2006 at 8:13 pm
Hi Allan,
YOu can download the manuals from Nokia’s website:
http://www.businesssoftware.nokia.com/blackberry_downloads.php
The set-up wasn’t that bad but I suggest you read the manual BEFORE you start the process.
August 13th, 2006 at 8:29 am
What’s interesting with my situation is that it’s only in certain areas (specifically my office) that I lose data functionality…..Even more curious is that I had Cingular service w/ the BB plan - and never had a problem, all over the world!
Any thoughts?
August 16th, 2006 at 9:18 pm
Can someone help me with getting my new Nokia E61 to work. I installed the Blackberry connect, but when i go to menu>Messages> “blackberry does not appear as an option to select? What am I not doing?
August 17th, 2006 at 4:45 pm
first of all…very nice blog and detail info on new device.
current Blackberry user with t-mobile service….
using pop mail for work…no enterprise mail service needed..
ready to plunge in to e61:
couple of question …..(stillh2o) already ask the similar question in this page but…no feed back from him on full function of e61 wth tmobile……so, here i go again..
what kind of data plan will i need to get for e61 to work in tmbile network.
these are the two choices;
accrding to tmobile webpage.
1)T-Mobile Total Internet(unlimited)
2)BlackBerry Internet Service Plan (blackberry unlimited)
(1) is for the non blackberry device pda or smart ph device…i.e. MDA
(2) is for the all blackberry devices..with email and web surfing.
also, any E61 user with tmobile….?
what kind of data speed u get…mostly gprs or edge..
thanks for help

Did anyone figure out why data connections won’t work with e60/cingular? Voice, SMS, and WiFi all work fine, just getting on the web using Cingular GPRS doesn’t work.
August 21st, 2006 at 9:15 am
Good morning knowledgable people,
I read through the entire thread, and no one asked about using Cingular’s 3G service with the E61. I was looking forward to ordering an E61 for that reason alone. Any thoughts or suggestions? I guess most of you are not in a 3G service area - hopefully I’m wrong about that.

I second fudgy’s question. I have a Cingular account but my current phone is a non-3G Razr. I’ve just upgraded to the E61 and wondering if I can now tap into Cingular’s 3G network here in San Francisco. Can I add Cingular Video?
Great site, thank you!

Hi Mike,
A very quick reply (still on vacation). There is a post about how to set up Cingular Video - works really well.

Hi,
I have been using an MDA for the last 8 months with T-Mobile USA via Goodlink. I have just purchased an E61. Taking the advise, I have run the online configurator for T-Mobile and I am up and running on the Internet. I also downloaded a copy of the Goodlink client from good.com. However when I try to install the client, which connects through the internet, I get an error during the “securing channel” phase - “Provisioning data is corrupted”. Could anyone offer any assistance? I need Goodlink to connect to my corporate server and since the device is NOT SUPPORTED by the IT department, it would be a shame to have to return it. THANKS!

Question on E-mail Download Settings
Hi all,
Somehow I have done something to a setting on my E61 and am now only receiving 30 emails at a time. I have tried to find the correction for this but have not been succesful. Anyone have any direction on how to return to receiving all emails available?
My thanks in advance.

Admin can i trouble you to help me i am trying to setup BB via Cingular on an e61
thanks
August 27th, 2006 at 10:17 am
To BB no MO:
I have been playing with my new E61 on the T-mobile network with BB ISP (unlimited). It’s been working fine. I have BB Connect and it’s pushing my email without problems. I used the Nokia configrator to get the settings, but I found that they did need to be tweaked. For instance, as you are configuring the phone, it gives u two choices, T-mobile internet and another one I can’t remember. I chose the T-mobile internet option, but had to change the settings within the E61 to use T-Mobile GPRS. Once I did that, I made a new Access Point with T-Moble GPRS. Point the browser to that access point and you are on the Web!
Can elaborate further if need be.

I am thinking about buying a Nokia e61 and was wondering if e61 will sync with IBM Lotus Notes. Please reply to smathew@ntnusa.com. Thanks a bunch.

thanks for your feed back……
do you also get EDGE speed on the E6 as well?…
August 28th, 2006 at 4:56 pm
BB no MO
I’ve not used EDGE before….so I can’t compare it. But I have the SE 910 as well on the same t-mobile network. The N61 is faster…I use the wi-fi and it makes all the difference. I have it set up for ann Access Group, so it first looks for my own home network, and if I’m away from home it uses any unlocked WLAN in the vicinity. I haven’t had to use GPRS yet!

All,
I just got an e61 a week ago and I’ve read thru all the posts and the gmail settings really helped me out!
I have a problem sending SMS and MMS messages! I can receive but not send. I’m on t-mobile in the US.
At first, I had absolutely no connectivity aside from phone calls. I used the configurator, but had no luck. I escalated to T-mobile Tier 1/2 support. They were able to give me correct settings for Internet and Email and WiFi. They looked at my message center, but it’s correct also. They’ve escalated to their “WDS” dept, but haven’t heard back from them.
I’m on the T-Mobile Total Internet (unlimited) plan.
Has anyone had success with SMS/MMS? Can someone out there help me with the correct settings?
Thanks!

Any help out there?

I am a SunCom customer in S.Carolina. SunCom has a marketing agreement with Cingular that allows for SunCom customers to use Cingular towers(signal) non-roaming. I just changed from a TREO-600 to the E61. Everthing works fine except cingular has a much better signal at my home. The SunCom signal drops calls 1 out of 2 calls and misses some incoming. I have the Un-Plan meaning unlimited incoming and outgoing for $80. I use about 3-4,000 mins per month and love the plan - less the dropped calls. I have friends that have cingular plans and no dropped calls at my house.
Question - How do I make my E-61 recognize Cingular’s signal (reciprocal agreement to use each others signal)?

NEED HELP:
So here is my problem. I have an e61 on cingular. The internet runs wicked slow. How are people getting on to their HSDPA network with their e61’s?
I have also had the same problem that was mentioned earlier of having my data connection crap-out. I have to shut the phone off/on to get the connection to work. This happens generally once a day or so. Any thoughts here?
Thanks,
Seth

Hammer/All.
i have e61 with t-mo with unlimited BB service.
i had e61 for about 10 days..all the features are working flowless.
can’t beat unlimited data plan with BB service for $20 bucks a month.
where other guys charge $45 a month for data service..
but, everyone knows that voice service sucks in t-mo….especially..when u get out of urban areas…very spotty coverage…voice services is good enough for me…..i live in nyc.
well…you get what you pay for…
anyway..
regarding MMS msg:
assuming that you used nokia config tool from top of this page to set up your e61..
after you finish composing the MMS msg or pic msg….and hit send…E61 will ask you for access point…choose either MMS or Picture Messaging as you access point……..if its set up to different access point than u need to change to mms or pic msg access point.
you have different data plan than me so…it might not work for you.
also, there is nokia config web page for usa…little different than one’s from this page;
http://www.nokiausa.com/support/settings/1,1921,,00.html
i used above link to set up e61
try that and see if that work
good luck

Seth;
per haps firmware upgarde…
http://europe.nokia.com/softwareupdate
i am not using cingular with e61…..t-mo user…
so, cant spk 4 your behalf…but, eversince the firmware update…ph seems be faster, smoother and wifi speed is boosted than b 4.
***b 4 frim upgrade….mak sure back up everything in nokia pc suite in your pc/mac.
good luck.

Hi. I recently purchased an unlocked e61. I have been using a BB 7100. We don’t have an exchange server at work but t-mobile have been able to push my work emails to my BB. I can’t get email or text messaging to work on the e61(actually I can receive texts). I’ve spent hours on the phone with t-mobile and they have told me they cannot help!! I have tried downloading blackberry connect and have installed it but it will not come up as an option on my phone. I have no idea what else I can do….any ideas?
September 18th, 2006 at 8:04 am
Thanks BB no MO for the advice. I was able to get MMS working (for phones that can receive MMS), but am sad to say it didn’t help with regular old SMS.
T-Mobile have given up on me after 4+ hours with all 3 tiers of tech support and the wireless department. They say the device must be incompatible with their network and suggest I go back to Nokia for help.
My last option is to swap one of my friends’ tmobile sim cards with mine and see if they can sms from the e61. If so, then my sim card (from the voicestream days) is probably corrupted.
Thanks!

I have Blackberry Connect and Cingular Service. The blackberry functions work fine, I still get the blank screen when I try to access the Internet. I downloaded the Cingular settings from the Nokia webpage and followed all the other directions on this page. Can anyone help?
September 19th, 2006 at 4:20 pm
Prior to the firmware upgrade every email account I set up on t-mobile BB Connect worked fine. Each account was pushing email as expected. After the upgrade, BB Connect pushes the email of only one account and not the others. I made no changes to the settings for those accounts. Has anyone had the same issue, and if so, any remedies?
Thanks

Like the site, but am new to the whole unlocked GSM smartphone thing. I have had the E61 now for 4 days. It looks like I can retreive emails, but cannot send emails or use the internet. I have Cingular as my network and both Cingular and Nokia cannot help since the phone is not available in the US. Also, I created an email account manually - without the automatic settings listed above and it defaults as my inbox. Is there any way to delete this out of the phone? Any help appreciated.

I am struggling to make SMTP work on my E61 on Cingular. It seems to ask for the password every single time, even though it says it’s saving it to settings.
It’s as though the saved password is always wrong.
Any suggestions?

ARGGGG.
Need some help here. I haven’t changed any setting to my phone, but for the past week I lose my network connection on cingular and have to reset my phone at least 8 times a day.
What in the world could be going on?
September 21st, 2006 at 10:13 am
Seth - I had the same issue, when I would go to the connection manager, the status would be that it was trying to connect to the access point but wouldn’t unless I shut it down. It was happenning very frequently while I had full bars for reception. The big issues for me was I had my work email on the phone and live on it. I switched back to my Bberry 8700c because of this issue. If you find a solution - please let me know airlimp@yahoo.com. Thanks.
September 21st, 2006 at 10:57 am
Dan,
I am also doing good link for e-mail. It is just a sudden change out of no where. If I can’t stop resetting this thing, its going out the window.
Is ANYONE reliably using Goodlink on Cingular and not having to constantly reset?
September 21st, 2006 at 3:58 pm
Seth,
Have you tried upgrading the phone’s software - I wonder if that would do anything. You can download it at http://europe.nokia.com/softwareupdate.
I updated the software, but I haven’t tried switching back from the Bberry yet. If you give it a shot, please let me know how it goes.
Thanks,
Dan

admin: How you tell me how to set up push email from my company MS exchange sever into my E61? Much thanks!
September 21st, 2006 at 4:29 pm
Can’t be done, unless your carrier supports it and provisioned your device. Your best bet is to go with Agile Messenger or IM+ or another IM client.
Cheers
September 21st, 2006 at 4:32 pm
You need 3 things:
Exchange server address:
User Name & Password
Domain
Domain is NOT your … companyname.com, not that kind of domain.
Your best bet is to ask your kind IT guy.
September 21st, 2006 at 6:06 pm
admin,
i got the email and internet working with sbcglobal/yahoo through cingular. Each time i back out of email is says it will disconnect. Is there a way to get email to stay on all the time without logging out and back in?
Any help appreciated.
September 22nd, 2006 at 10:40 am
Admin:
Since I can’t get anyone else to answer, I figured i would ask you. I have clearly figured out the problem is is I get a call I no longer can get my data service to work. Conversly if I have been surfing for a while I need to shut the phone off/on to make calls. I have cingular/good link.
I am not sure if this is a phone problem or network problem. It just started about 2 weeks ago.
PLEASE HELP
September 26th, 2006 at 8:20 pm
Anybody know how to use the umts service on the E61 with cingular? Also, what is the best software for synching with an exchange server at work? I’ve tried mail for exchange without much luck.
September 27th, 2006 at 7:36 am
Imran,
You cannot use the UMTS service with Cingular. It’s not compatible.
Setting up Mail For Exchange is easy. You need the following:
Username and password
Exchange server address
Domain (this is not your internet domain name).
Ask your IT admin for the exchange address and the domain.
September 30th, 2006 at 7:11 pm
I used the nokia phone settings web page to get Cingular data settings however when I choose “cingular ISP” I get no packet data .. I want to make sure I have the right settings for the fastest connection on my unlimited data plan ///
the cingular MMS works but it is real slow, also when I connect to hotmail I get a java page that says it cant load (but it loads fine when I am on WIFI)
Any ideas ?

Has anyone had a problem opening attachements in email via Balckberry connect such as word or xl files, is there anyway the attachements could be opened by documents to go for all size attachments?
October 5th, 2006 at 9:26 am
KTS,
The current version of BlackBerry Connect doesn’t support attachment.
October 6th, 2006 at 1:40 am
Hi
The only way I found to read attachments received in Blackbery is to forward the message and its attachemnts to my pop3 email address. When it is downloaded on the E61 the attachments can be opened.
October 12th, 2006 at 4:55 pm
Seth,
I updated the phone software and reloaded the Goodlink and so far (knock on wood) I haven’t had any of the data problems I used to have. Maybe give that a shot and let me know if it works for you.

Admin:
Started looking at E 61 and E 62 last week. How will the Cingular service in both NYC and Steamboat Springs, CO work for the E 61 ? I have company email in NYC and use yahoo as my global email. How will the E 61 work with Skype ? Both in the U.S. and International ?
Will I be able to buy the E 61 from Cingular ? I am thinking about buying it from Cingular and then buying the unlocking code later. I will also look at buying the E 61 unlocked, not from Cingular, but use a Cingular plan in the U.S.
A lot of questions all in one posting, but this will help push this selection along.
Thank you.

Anybody know how to append your signature for forwards and replies on Goolink email? I can get it to append on a new message, but not for a response or forward.
October 25th, 2006 at 2:11 pm
I am embarrassed to ask this, but… I can’t figure it out and believe me, I have been through the manual a million times.
How do I update my e-mails to the device when I want it right now, and not wait for the sheduled update? I mean, there must be a shortcut, some button to click to get an instant syncronization (in mail for exchange)?
For some reason, I never get an “connect to mailbox now?” option when I go to the message folder and select “mail for exchange” so the only way I can new emails outside scheduled updates is by going to >>Menu>>Installed>>Mail for Exchange>>Current status
Please, there must be a quicker way of doing it, I just can’t figure it out…. *blushing* Ohhh man, I feel stupid for asking this….
October 25th, 2006 at 4:30 pm
I was told by T mobile that the nokiaE61 only supports blackberry Email, not web browsing, that is blackberry browsing. I know it supports EGPRS. Is it true.
October 26th, 2006 at 7:22 am
Hi, I tried the Nokia Phone Configurator. Entered all info as asked. But I dont get the text message on the phone. But I can send and rcv messages from my phone to other phones.
Any ideas on how to recv the settings from the website.?
October 26th, 2006 at 7:33 am
Hi Sathya,
Sometimes it takes a while before you get the message. I would;
1. Give it a try tomorrow, if that doesn’t work
2. See if your carrier has a similar service (most carrier do have phone setting configurators) if your carrier doesn’t..
3) consider performing a hard reset…
Just my two cents
Cheers
Ed
October 26th, 2006 at 2:19 pm
How do I do a hard reset? I found the codes on this site. I go to Tools>Settings>Phone>General>Orig Phone Settings — is that the right way? I haven’t been able to find those steps searching on ‘hard reset’ on this site.
October 26th, 2006 at 4:48 pm
I tried the tutorial but am not receiving the text message. Worse yet I can’t seem to be able to either send or receive sms. I have the settings as:
Msg centre name: SMS Settings
Msg centre number: +13123149810
Anybody able to shed some light on this? many thanks.
October 26th, 2006 at 7:40 pm
HI Stephen,
To hard reset and completely erase all data on the device and restore to factory settings type *#7370# (default lock code is 12345)
Hi Anders,
A couple of things you can try:
- Power on/off cycle
- Try pushing the settings directly from your carrier i.e. Cingular.com or whatever carrier
- Do you use a MiniSD card? remove it and try it again
- Try a hard reset.
Just my two cents.
October 27th, 2006 at 12:38 pm
Thanks for the tips. I tried all 3 to no avail :-(. i don’t think Gingular can push the info because I can’t receive text messages. I’ll try to call the company that sold this to me. Thank you again
October 27th, 2006 at 4:42 pm

Trying to send text messages with Cingular on my E61. Pretty much the same issue as Hammer - I can receive messages but can’t send them. It always comes back “Unable to send message.” I’ve downloaded the basic and advanced settings from Nokia and tried to change the access point like BB no MO said. Didn’t work. Any suggestions are much appreciated.
I purchased the E61 unlocked and moved the SIM card over from my BlackBerry 6100g. Everything else works fine, just can’t send text messages. Thanks!

Looking for E61 Expert in San Francisco. I’m out of my league with this phone and need a serious expert to sit down with me in person to help me figure out all I can do with it. I’d like to make sure my setings are right, help with VoIP calling, figure out email, and find out about nifty apps and how to install them.
I am of course willing to pay for the consulting service. If you’re interested, please email me at anders_pers@hotmail.com.
Thank you.

Just got an E61 and have been reading the posts. This may sound like a dumb question, but when I go to Nokia’s phone configurator and need to put in my cell #, do i need to include the country code for the USA or can i just put in my 7-Digit cell #? I am on cingular service.
Thanks all.
November 3rd, 2006 at 1:13 pm
Hey just got a E62 couple of weeks ago from an online dealer (www.wirefly.com), I am having a weird problem, I cannot connect the Internet using my phone. I have a 19.99 unlimited Media Net plan. I called up the cingular rep and after 1 hour of head banging what they finally said is that I am missing one setting Proxy Address in Menu\Settings\Config\Connection\Access points\MEdia Net\Options\Advanced config
It dosent show me Proxy Address field which I can modify. I have Proxy serv address as : wireless.cingular.com and Proxy port number: 80.
The cingular rep told me that you cannot get this setting unless you buy the handset from cingular.com or cingular retailer (sick). I am totaly frustrated as I have already purchased it with a 2 yr contract.
Please somebody help me as I even tried to download the settings from nokia as well as cingular but I havent recieved the configuration settings sms. I can still recieve other sms.
I want to access the internet from my phone, without internet its a waste using such a nice handset.
Thanks in Advance.

Can someone help me install Good mobile messaging on my unlocked Nokia E60? I’m on Cingular and I have downloaded the OTA setup but when I start the installation process, nothing happens.
November 8th, 2006 at 2:19 pm
Hi Wandergirl,
Good never created a version that would work on the Nokia E60. However, there is a version that works GREAT for the Nokia E62 and OK on the Nokia E61.
November 8th, 2006 at 3:01 pm
Crap! I could swear I found sites that said Nokia E60 supported Goodlink. Now I have to sell this brand new E60 because I wont be able to use it. Is there any other NON-qwerty business phone out there? I’m not too keen on those qwerty phones. I like being able to use just 1 hand to type. I was using the cingular 8125 which was total crap! Had no choice - corporate account!
November 8th, 2006 at 3:01 pm
will i be able to use any other wireless email stuff? blackberry connect?
November 8th, 2006 at 3:34 pm
Anderson, if what you bought from wirefly is Cingular branded, Cingular has to support it. Go to a Cingular store. If its not working out, call Wirefly and if even that doesn’t work send it back and cancel your contract. Hopefully you still are in the trial period and can cancel without being penalised. All the best!
November 8th, 2006 at 5:51 pm
Hi Wandergirl,
No need to get rid of your device. You have a good choice of corporate email applications that run on the Nokia E60.
BlackBerry Connect and Mail For Exchange (ActiveSync) are two:

I am using a Nokia E61 with email hosted on a private websever. I have recently changed webhosting from one company to another. I could send and receive POP3 email on the Nokia E61 before. Now I can receive it but I can’t send it. I have checked with the new hosting company that the outgoing port is set correctly for the new server and have checked and re-typed the username and password several times to make sure it is correct. I have also re-downloaded the settings for my phone company (Vodafone AUS). I can both send a receive email through MS-Outlook on my computer with the same settings I am using in the phone. Any ideas why I can’t send through the phone now?
November 9th, 2006 at 9:34 pm
if i configure my phone to my specific carrier, will that give me better reception? I get great reception everywhere, except in parts of my house.
November 16th, 2006 at 2:18 pm
Anybody know how to go about playing video files on the E61? Thanks
November 17th, 2006 at 6:22 am
First, congratulations for the great site !!!
A friend bought my E61 in tigerdirect.com. They don’t informs to us that the phone is an Asian version…
Ok, I use English in phone (my first language is Brazillian Portuguese, so be carefull:) ) and the phone comes unlocked. But its comes with customized browser (and logo) for a company called Mobile 3 (from Hong Kong). The browser icon in a navigator bar has named as Planet 3 (linked to the company website) and I can’t remove or change this…
I believe that tigerdirect it would have inform the buyers about this. Now I think seriously that the phone has bought by tigerdirect from Mobile 3 and unlocked to sell is US…
Anyway, anyone knows how to descustomize this settings without use alternatives like iunlock.com ??? Brazilian laws are very restrictive to send and receive equipments without paying a heavy fee and taxes.
Thanks very much and sorry if the post violate any blog politics.
November 18th, 2006 at 1:35 pm
Alexandre,
there are app call NSS that let you change the device code to Nokia standard code (not carrier specific). After that you can go to Nokia.com and install the Nokia software updater to reflash your device. After it detect the new device code on your phone, it will update your phone with latest Nokia standard software instead of Mobile 3 software. You can update the phone yourself, very easy to do.
November 20th, 2006 at 5:04 am
abcchoier,
Thank you so much !
I got the NSS, search a lot in the web for a product code list, try EURO-V1 code, Nokia Software Update, cross the fingers and… I have Brazilian Portuguese in my phone now !
I think that EURO pcode have the localized versions of fw for not European countries too.
Some keys are changed, but ok… Mobile 3 logos and icons are definitively out.
Best regards !
November 20th, 2006 at 7:06 pm
Alexandre,
I am in the same situation, I did buy the .hk E61 from someone in California and am trying to get rid of the Mobile 3 stuff all over the phone. Can you post a link to the EURO-V1 code? I could not find it.
Thanks
November 21st, 2006 at 5:25 am
Wan03,
old code: 0538361
euro-v1: 0538128
(I am writing from E1 and I don’t have the original link here.)
November 22nd, 2006 at 12:30 am
Alexandre
Thanks, but I am not sure I understand what the code refers to, where do I enter it? How do I use it?
November 22nd, 2006 at 2:57 pm
Wan03,
1) search for a program called NSS (Nemesis Service Switch, I think)
2) Phone info > search. NSS will return serial and IMEI
3) Put the code in the correct field and hit write(READ does nothing)
4) Run the NSU (Nokia Software Update). To me, its sad that my firmware was already updated and question to update again.
5)Cross the fingers …
Good luck!

Can’t receive text messages. I am an AT&T customer, now under Cingular. I have an unlocked nokiae 61. I was able to send and receive text messages the first day I had the phone. Now, I can send messages, receive phone calls, yet, I cannot receive messages at all, including emails from my gmail account (which came to my phone during th day).
I put my sim card in my previous phone, a nokia 9500 and I was unable to receive text messages, even though I never had a problem with the 9500 for the year and a half that I used it. Is tihs a problem with my sim card and/or my settings on the e61. Please help!!! In advance, Thank you!

This is my send time asking for help on the issue below. Since posting my first request for assistance, I upgraded my e61’s firmware with this blog’s direction. Thank you so much! (there were a few steps that were not mentioned, such as choose “pc suite instead of data transfer” when beginning the firmware upgrade from nokia’s site).
