VoIP In The Enterprise - A Revolution To Come
This is the first installment in a series on the topic on VoIP in the Enterprise. It is written by Trevor who works in the field of telecommunication. Nokia introduced the promise of the Eseries devices as phones for the enterprise. Using these phone models to replace someone’s office desk phone, allowing people to have two phone numbers assigned to their mobile phone, one as a ‘mobile number’ and the other as the ‘desk number’ seems to be Nokia’s VoIP goal with the Eseries. Here’s more on how this will play out from Trevor.
VoIP in the Enterprise.
Over the last few years many large customers have been installing VoIP (Voice over IP) solutions to gain the cost saving benefits, that include but are not limited to reduced MAC charges and toll bypass. The down side of VoIP is the handsets, which do little more than traditional phones at a much higher cost.
That’s all about to change. With the introduction of phones like the Nokia E series and others, the cost of outfitting an employee with a desk and mobile phone has been greatly reduced, as you only need one handset. There are several telecommunications providers, that are either working on, or are trialling converged POTS, Mobile and VoIP solutions.
An example is T-Mobile in the US, have their HotSpot @ Home service (this is available in selected areas). This service allows a subscriber to make unlimited calls at no charge from the WiFi hotspots at home and around the city. With major players in the VoIP space, like Cisco and Avaya announcing native clients support for the S60 3rd edition phones (they aren’t available yet though) that landscape is about to change. Traditional Telco’s and VoIP providers are going to be able to offer new and exciting products. I believe that you will also see more and more WiFi enabled devices being released over the next few years and the convergence between WiFi, Traditional Mobile and POTS will become commonplace in the not so distant future.
So all you people with E-Series phones, isn’t it nice to know you were involved at the start of this revolution.
Thanks for the photos and nice write up Trevor. I look forward to next installment.
I agree with Trevor that VoIP in the corporate world will change enterprise telephony. Companies are naturally drawn to technologies that can bring about significant cost savings.
With most of the E-Series devices, the theory is that companies can save money on least cost routing for long distance and International phone calls. At the same time, end user will be able to take advantage of PBX features normally only available to desktop phones, on their dual mode E-series devices. Features such as extension based calling, forwarding of calls etc. Let’s hope that this vision plays out. If so we’ll certainly be seeing a lot more Eseries devices around the world!
Let’s end with a clip from Avaya. It’s a bit cheesy but is on topic.

Hi Trevor (or Admin).
Interesting perspective. However, what are “MAC charges”?
November 13th, 2006 at 6:25 pm
Bill M,
Sorry for not clarifying this Acronym. MAC stands for Move Add & Change. This is related to the installation, movement and change associated with the Phones. I a fixed line world this is done be a phone company or other Tech and involves external cost. In the VoIP world the end user can provision, move and make some changes to the phone with no external cost. The savings from this alone can be considerable. This is due to the fixed line world holding the number association on the physical line where as the VoIP world associates the number with the Phone or endpoint device.
Cheers Trevor.

This sounds like a future I’d really like to see in the short-term. But it’s a bit discouraging when we get versions of an otherwise WiFi enabled smartphone like the E62 (E61 being the European version with WiFi) that has the WiFi feature gutted out. It’s like holding out a promise of a possible future without the intent of delivering… Of course, unless this is all going to change for future versions…

I’m in the fortunate position to be trialling the Cisco client from Nokia. For those with a Cisco infrastructure, it basically connects as a 7960 to our Cisco CallManager. It uses the skinny protocol (SCCP) to do this, and will therefore be able to connect to older versions too.
So now, as soon as I walk into my office, my E61 (/E60) automatically registers as my normal extension. This is fantastic for me since I spend a great deal of time away from my desk and now rarely miss a call. As you say, you also then get access to standard phone features from the handset too…Couple this with the mobility software available from Cisco and I get single number reach both in and out of the office.
We have clients considering a Cisco solution just to get access to this true dual-mode wifi/gsm functionality.
With regards the Avaya software, I believe the current version works differently in that it is using their Extension to Cellular capability which means a mobile call when making calls from your extension and a call to a mobile from your corporate system when receiving calls, even if you are in the office — i.e. it isn’t using wifi. However, I understand they are working on a new version… Perhaps someone could comment?
Hope this is useful. If I get chance, I’ll try and send in some screen shots…

At my work place I have just implemented an Avaya VOIP solution. Nokia have been in development with Avaya for a while developing an application call One-X which you install on your phone and while in the office or out of the office I am an extension of the work PBX (Switch). I have no use for a desk phone now and I am always in contact. All I can say is a love it! Nokia and Avaya have some really interesting stuff coming out soon. Will keep you posted as we are a dev site for all the new stuff coming out. If you want more detail please do hesitate to contact me. Here some detail on the one-x app http://www.avaya.co.uk/gcm/emea/en-us/products/offers/one-x_mobile_edition.htm

Hi all:
Does someone know when the CISCO client will be available for connecting E61 to Call Manager?
November 14th, 2006 at 5:53 am
i have recently become an e61 user and recently discovered your fantastic e-series blog. many thanks for making it available.
funny thing is that two minutes before reading trevor’s educational explanation of voip i got off the phone with my cellular provider after a long conversation trying to understand how they could supply me with voip service, compatible with the phone they just supplied me. they passed my call from person to person trying to understand what exactly it was that i was asking…
thanks and regards from jerusalem

The clip showing the Avaya oneX solution isn’t VoIP. The solution merely allows the PBX to ring both your desk phone and mobile when you receive an incoming call to your desk phone number. The actual call to your mobile is a conventional cellular call.

I’m in the fortunate position to be trialling the Cisco CallManager client from Nokia. For those with a Cisco infrastructure, it uses the Skinny Protocol (SCCP) and appears to the CallManager as a 7960 handset. Using the Skinny Protocol allows the handset to work with older versions of CallManager too. The configuration (compared with SIP configuration) is extremely easy — I just have to specify my TFTP server address…
Basically when I walk in the office, my E61 now automatically connects to the wireless network and registers me on the CallManager. This is great for me as I spend very little time at my desk. As you say, it also allows me to use standard CallManager features like Hold/Transfer/Conference etc..
As Fred says, the Avaya solution doesn’t work in the same way — it isn’t dual-mode, as in WiFi and GSM. It basically makes a mobile call to your corporate system when making a call, and makes a call out from your corporate system when receiving a call using the “Extension to Cellular” functionality, whether you are in or out of the office…
I have some screen shots of the Cisco client in action if anyone would like them… Not sure how to get them up to the site…
Hope this is useful…

Just to clarify on Freds and Darrens point re the Avaya onex application. It can do both depending on how you configure it, in the case of my business I have it making calls on my WiFi network at work and not not the cellular network. When i am out of the office it uses the cellular network and when at home it uses my wifi connection again.
November 14th, 2006 at 8:46 am
Folks - Especially who merely banks on proprietary solutions from vendors big C and Avaya.
As matter of fact, you don’t really need to wait for anything to make your E61 work with your IP Telephony as it comes with native SIP client.. One of the foremost reason that i bought my E61 paying 100 USD premium back in April was taking advantage of SIP functionality. I have been using it since the very first day with my Asteriks IP PBX as well our corporate IP Telephony system provided by 3Com and that provides unparalleled level flexibility for business users.(receive all your calls over the IP network regardless of your location)
Unlike the Cisco and Avaya - 3Com most of other Voip vendors promote industry standards such as SIP to enhance the way of communication in Enterprise Telephony world.
SIP and SIP-related standards have matured and SIP become the dominant Voip protocol in wired and wireless communication - as matter of fact SIP far more than just VOIP - it basically redefines communication with audio, video conferencing, IM and presence.
In essence, SIP is the dominant signaling protocol for initiating session and thank god Nokia E61 supports it from day one !
Don’t be trapped with vendor specific solutions and protocols !

I am very interested in this feature as we are considering giving all our clients ( 250 persons ) this nokia phone and testing the wifi feature,.. I am thiugh very afraid that the quality isnt there yet.. has anyone any great info on this matter
November 14th, 2006 at 11:55 am
All,
Sorry for the double post earlier… Didn’t think my original post worked from my E61 (i was on the train).
Anyway, with regards the one X client, it seems that Avaya must have done some work — hopefully it’s as good as the Nokia skinny client, in conjunction with the Cisco single number reach mobility software — thanks for the update.
On Cisco, of course they also support SIP on their latest version (CM5), as do most manufacturers, but native skinny just opens up the field to those with an older version and currently provides greater integration.
Finally, with reference to the quality question, the wifi quality is better than the gsm. To make sure you don’t suffer quality issues under load, you should configure your wireless network with QoS (802.11u i think). Hope that helps.
November 14th, 2006 at 12:15 pm
HI,
Let me clear the Avaya way of functioning here. Apart from supporting all the Symbian v2 phones in the bridged mode like is mentioned by many posts and also as in the clip, Avayas also support for the E-Series phones in the Dual Mode. i.e. Avaya also supports a dual mode wherein inside the office WiFi it works on the wireless SIP mode whereas while u step out of teh Wireless range the call is automatically or manually carried over to the GSM mode “Without” dropping the call in progress and you can continue to use the Nokia like an office extension over the GSM. I have personally tested the manual transfer of an acctive call from WiFi to GSM and it works perfectly, unfortunately havent been able to test the Automatic transfer as yet, but soon it will be tested. I could updated on this site when i do.
Regards…

Great thread guys!
You’re right- mobile phone convergence is massive & will revolutionise the way we people contact us. Have you noticed as well that technology is now being centred round the user, with a view to control and reducing the communications overload?
I work in the VoIP industry and we have been very impressed by the ShoreTel IP phone system. I’m using my e61’s native SIP client at the moment, which gives me basic functionality.
Another part of this jigsaw, I think, is unified messaging. When someone leaves me a voicemail on my work number, I can have it delivered to my email which is also on my e61 via ‘push’ Exchange sync.
Anyway, enough from me!

VoIP at home. I use a fritzbox (http://www.avm.de/en/index.php3) which enables me to use VoIP with my regular phone. I would love to use the fritzbox also with my E61 but have difficulties connecting it. Does anyone know where I can find a good manual for my issue?
November 14th, 2006 at 5:53 pm
We’re using Cisco VoIP in the office and I would be so happy to try the E61 client with it… Would make my life so much easier… Any ideas when the client will be released?
November 15th, 2006 at 1:01 am
I use a VOIP solution on my E70 that I find very satisfactory called Truphone. The service is in Beta right now but still very useful and great sound quality, I have the native client in the phone set up to register on my office open guest wifi network and my home secure network as soon as the wireless signal is detected, effectively where I spend 80% of my time.
I therefore have two phone numbers on one device, my personal mobile and my “work” number which I put on a business card for freelance gigs. When I am not in range of a wifi network, a voice mail is delivered to my phone via push email and I can immediately make a call back. This is truly revolutionary and the fact that I can set this up without pricey enterprise solutions colors me giddy for the future of UMA.

With regard to a release date for the Cisco client, for the UK it looks like it will be late January/early February. Not sure what the cost for that will be at present though.

Hi Trevor.
I found out today that it really is Beta, but have obtained a copy from a local Cisco office (for testing purposes). The funny thing is that although it is Beta, the version is 1.34, and it works like a charm
Connection properties require only Call Manager’s IP address and that’s all! Works perfectly. Call manager sees my Nokia as Cisco’s 7960 IP phone

[...] If you like gadgets especially smart phones/dual mode phones(cellular + Wi-Fi) the Nokia E61 should definately be in your vocabulary and perhaps christmas wish list. It’s one of the most popular-cutting edge smartphones in the market today. Only available overseas, the E61 packs a bunch of features including - Quadband, EDGE, 3G,WiFI which makes it a very strong “multimedia computer” however one of the most overlooked or unused features of the phone is the built in SIP client that comes along with the unit. This was one of the toughest phones for me to get since Cingular carries the E62 in the US (which lacks 3G,WiFI and Quadband) and cell phone enthusiast in the US scrambled for the E61 and I was the first one to get it at the office a few months ago. I spotted the first E61 at our User Forum in Palm Springs actually - Rob Ibbitson (Voice Chief Architect) from Interoute has one too. These days there are two more E61’s floating around the office (Nick Turner VP of Product Marketing and Andrew Colby VP of Customer Solutions) now have one, but not yet using the SIP client though. It seems to me that there are more VoIP consumer applications out there for the E Series such as Tivi, Truphone, Gizmo, and others popping every day- than for the enterprise which is what these phones were made for - part of a fixed to mobile convergence solution for the mobille workforce. Companies are looking at FMC as a solution to increase productivity by integrating mobile devices to business, one phone number for all calls and benefit from cost savings by least cost routing to control long distance and international calling. I’ve read about Cisco call manager and Avaya one-X but not seen one personally yet. What do you think - do these smart-dualmode phones have a chance to be as popular in the enterprise space as they are in the consumer space? and what are some of the major obstacles and challenges they will face? If you want to read further into this topic check out these two blog posts which talk about the E61 in the Enterprise space: VoIP in the Enterprise- A revolution to Come and SIP and Native VoIP Clients [...]

Hi Guys,
Great posts. I have one question to ask. We have a purely Cisco infrastructure. Has anyone tested the auto failover from wifi / call manager to gsm / mobile provider?
We want to have wireless in our sites but the handover would have to be seemless to the users when they leave the corporate wifi range. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I have an Asterisk/Trixbox system with chan_sccp2 (the newest version, 20060408) and I have 3 7960s, 1 7940 and 1 7912 working fine here at my house but I do not know what file I need to put in my TFTP directory and the format it needs to be in for the SCCP client. I have an SEP0013FDxxxxxx.cnf.xml right now (like I have for all my other SCCP phones) but if someone could go into their tftp directories and pull one out and either post it here or e-mail it to me at george.chongris@gmail.com that would be great thanks
