Nokia E62 - How To Solve “Certificate Error”
A reader pointed out the inconsistency between the Nokia E61 and the Nokia E62 in regards to solving the issue of “Certificate Error” when installing applications and themes. Since the “Certificate Error” is the most commonly asked question I thought I should highlight this again, for the benefit of our new readers whom I suspect are Nokia E62 users.
If you have ever tried to install an application or a theme but instead been greeted by the above “Certificate error. Contact the application supplier” message, this is how you solve the problem.Go to “Settings” > “App. mgr.” (scroll down to find it)
Select “Option” > “Configuration”.
Changed “Software installation” from “Signed only” to “All”.
That’s it! Now when you try to install the application or the theme you will not see the “Certificate Error” message anymore. If you would like to read more about this I can recommend this great post by Antony Pranata.

If you are using a Nokia E61 please refer to my previous post about how to solve the “Certificate Error” issue.

Now if you could figure out why the “Authorization Failed” error shows up on some J2ME applications (during installation) I’d greatly appreciate it
Although Im sure its because Cingular doped up the firmware.

Anyone know how to resolve the certificate error when connecting to a SSL mail server? I get the following:
“This site has sent an untrusted certificate. Continue anyway?”
I know there’s a solution for Gmail, but how about other providers? Thanks.
November 16th, 2006 at 12:03 am
Thanks for mentioning my blog in this posting.
This certificate error is the most common asked question for E-Series users.
The interesting thing is N-Series by default allow installation of all files (not only signed ones).

“Anyone know how to resolve the certificate error when connecting to a SSL mail server?”
The reason to this is that a appropriate root certificate (CA) is missing on the phone. The solution is that you have to download and install the root certificate of the mail server’s certificate to your phone’s memory. Check out what is the certificate’s owner (CN) and try to find out the root certificate for it from the web. Use your phone’s web browser to download and install the certificate to the phone.
For example GeoTrust and Equifax root certificates can be found here:
http://www.geotrust.com/resources/root_certificates/index.asp
What comes to J2ME MIDlet signing I noticed that you can’t use self-signed certificates for midlet installation anymore on the S60 3rd edition. Maybe midlets are signed with the certification that is not authorized to midlet installation(?). Or maybe just the signature of the midlets are invalid.

Certain java files I install on my E62 come up with a “Authorization Failed” message and i don’t know why. Funny thing it works on some but some it doesn’t. Any answers anybody?

November 23rd, 2006 at 2:43 am
What theme did u use on the E62 phone (the blue one)? Its so cool.
November 23rd, 2006 at 9:50 am
Hi Wan,
If I remember correctly it is the official Cingular theme that comes with the Cingular branded Nokia E62.
Cheers
Ed
Oh, one more thing. I don’t know of any way to “extract” the themes so I can’t share them
November 24th, 2006 at 3:51 am
I don´t get change the options of “Software Installation”. In the menu, I can see two options “Signed only” and “All”, but it´s imposible for me choose “All”, because always back to “Signed only”. How can I solve this, please?
Thank You, and sorry for me english.

Anybody know why I can’t open attachments on my new E62? I keep getting “Error S7125: Message was not found. It may have been removed from your mailbox”
I know for a fact this is not the case- I’ve tried sending spreadsheet and pdf’s and neither works! Please advise- Thanks.

I received my Nokia E61 but I can’t change the application manager-settings-software installation to All.
It’s locked on Signed Only.
Is there a way to unlock this feature so I can install a Theme?
Getting tired of receiving the certificate error!
Any help is appreciated!!

Do you have a carrier branded device?
It can be tricky to switch to “all”. Make sure you move down the cursor so that all is highlighted and then press the center joystick.
January 17th, 2007 at 10:22 am
Tried that and it won’t work.
I have Cingular as my carrier and I had a friend from Finland send me the phone since they only have the E62 in the US.
It will not allow me to change it because I’m sure it has some security settings preventing me from doing this.
January 17th, 2007 at 10:26 am
Tried again, its even trickier then what you said but I finally got it to switch.
Thanks so much!

I keep getting authorization failed when I try to install Java applications on my E62 (VNC, RDM etc). How can I resolve that. Neither Cingular nor Shapeservices have been able to fix and each blames the other. Thanks for your help.

Hi,
i live in china and bought a nokia 1708. I’m totally beginner in smartphones and all…
i wanted to be able to read pdf files, I managed to get after much trouble a pdf reader. the problem now is when i install it, the system tells me “security check failed”…i think it’s because there is a pb of certificate but not sure, how can i just tell the phone” look ok maybe it;s not safe but i still want to continue, i do want to install it despite ur warning”…
the phone does not enable me so far to just go on…
i spent hours on the net but so far no answer.

I have a cingular 61 that won’t take anything force fed. I can download uninstalled files but when opened to install I get the signed error. I’ve changed my setting and rechecked numerous times, followed by soft restart, hard restart, then had to re config but still no luck. Is there any one with an unlocked 62 where these instructions aren’t helping? If not i’m returning this to go get one. Cingulars site forum is brim full of unhappy customers over this. I love the phone, just not it’s insides. There should be some kind of lemon cell phone law cause this is one goes to judge Judy. Put it this way, I couldn’t even open a PDF of 755kb installed on my phone due to not enough storage. I guess the 80:1 ratio was to much for it.

Hi Shahed,
I’m not sure if there is a firmware update available but I would recommend you to use Nokia Phone Software Updater to see whether a new firmware update is available. You can also try a hard reset (don’t forget to back up your data though).

I have E50, I tried installing Themes, but none of the themes are installing, it either give a error message (Expired certificate or Sis not supported)or not install, Can you please help me on this
July 22nd, 2007 at 7:51 am
If you set the date back one year on your device and then try to install the Theme that was giving you an “Expired Certificate” message you can probably make it work.
After the theme is installed you can set the date correctly.

I own the E62, and I’m attempting to install some of the E62 themes. So far I have had no success. I have switched the settings in the App Manager to “All” and “Off”. When I try to install the apps my phone reads “Certificate Expired”, and when I adjust the date back to 2005 it reads “Certificate may not yet be valid, is expired, or phone’s date setting may be incorrect”. Are there any themes out there that are not expired, or compatible with the E62?? Help please..

December 27th, 2007 at 6:49 pm
You can’t install j2me apps on s60v3 without a proper certificate, and you cant install your own root certificate which is trusted for j2me apps, so you’ll get a ‘certificate error’. I’m starting an organisation for hobby developers which will allow people to share a certificate, see my website for more info.
