By judging from the search queries that bring traffic to e-series.org I think there is a big increase in the number of readers who are new to Nokia’s E-Series devices. I suspect that many of those readers have the Nokia E62 and might not be as familiar with S60 3rd edition or the Nokia E-Series devices as “long” time readers are.
Here’s a tip from Vinit, especially* for new Nokia E62 users - How to reduce the steps needed to create a text message.
Vinit writes:
“There are a number of steps you need to take to make a text msg. In addition, when typing in a name to SMS the device doesn’t auto complete the name or number. Well I just assigned one of the soft keys to “new sms” just like the tips and tricks section says and just for fun I tried typing in half a name e.g. instead of Adam Smith, I typed Adam, wrote my msg then hit send. The e62 came up with a list of all the Adam’s in my address book and asked me to select one of them. Its one less step rather then trying search for the contact before sending the msg.”
Just like Vinit described, typing the letter “A” and hitting send or pressing the joystick will bring up all possible matches in the address book.
Adding the letter “N” will reduce the number of matches.
Naturally, the more of a name you type, the more potential matches you will eliminate.
In this case typing “Andrea” will eliminate all but two potential matches.
Thanks for pointing this out Vinit.
* This tip works on all E-Series devices but since I suspect that many Nokia E62 users are unfamiliar with Series 60 I thought it would appeal more to them.
This will work with all the Nokia S60 devices, also NSeries ones like N91.
One more trick is to press SEND key to send the message instead of going to Options menu.
Works with E-61 too.
I am loving every bit my E-61
I have E50 and this tip works partially only. In “New SMS” I can write only numbers but not letters. In E50 I can go to New SMS and press GREEN when “To:” folder is empty… then phone shows me contact list and I can pick one or more names. But I can’t specify eg two first letters of name and then pres GREEN to select name.
well…you can change to enter letters by holding down the # key in the To: area. Then you can enter the name and then press the joystick button to select the contacts.
whoa, i have an e61 and i didnt know this. thanks for the tip:)
This also work on the E70.
And there is more: If you have a person with more than one phone-number, you get asked every time for which number to use for that message. You can eliminate this question by going in the contact list and assigning what number that should be used for sms, regular calls, MMS and more.
Open a person in contacts –> options –> defaults - Then choose the numbers to use for sms (especially)
This can take a while to do for all persons in your contact list, but it is worth the job to do it for the “most used” persons.
Thx for a great site!
Super tip!!!
I thought I knew everything there is to know about my E61 but I missed this one!
Wouter
Awesome feature … thanks for the trick.
Whats also great is if you type in a name with only one potential match, the sms is sent immediately. So try and type as much of the name as you can.
I also just recently discovered that the green key will send immediately. Also, if you hold function key and press ctrl, BT goes on/off. E61 keeps surprising….I’m loving it.
Another usefull option: if you want to send a message to multiple persons, use ; to seperate the (incomplete) names of the receivers. The rest works as described: super!
[3] carnero, hold down the hash key (#) for more than 1 second and you’ll be able to write letters too. It will switch the numberic mode to the alpha mode.
This is a great tip!
One of the real problems I have with the E-6x experience in general is the number of keystrokes it takes to accomplish ANYTHING….especially when compared to the P910 I just retired…and especially when I am driving.
Now, if I can find a work-around for the e-mail reply issue, I’ll be set.
This is not really related to this post, but have you seen the e62i? Would love to see a post on it, it looks beautiful.
thanks for the great blog.
Collin,
Awesome tip on the BT shortcut!!!!! I’ve been looking for that! Its been a pain to constantly go into the BT manager and turn it off / on / off when I sync with my work lappy.
Thanks
Hi Cameron and Collin,

To Everyone Else: i implore you all to please do not text/use your phone while driving. thats one reason i changed my phone to an E61 ,to make it harder to text while driving( though its easier to text when your not driving) so it would force me to not to use the phone while on the road. reason: an associate lost her husband not long ago due to using the phone while on the road, and he was texting with her, leaving the wife a widow with 2 kids at the age of 25. friends dont let friends use their phones while driving.
Hey, I am using my E61 here in Toronto, Canada on the Rogers Wireless network. I am only able to get 160 characters per message. On my Motorola V3, I get over 400 characters per message.
Does anyone know if there is a way to expand the number of 160 characters per message on the E61?
Thanks.
Darrell.
an (i think for me a better tip), just type the first letter(s) of the name of the contact you want to send to…
example: To my mother (her name is patricia violet)
I type pa, the E61 will search for every name with pa inside, but because she’s the only one he will send immeditentily to her… And if she has more then one phone number you can choose with one.
Have you all tried the new IM for Symbian Series 60

Works like a charm !
Hi John,
I wrote about IM+ here:

great tip.. i just got my new e61 today.. again.. the other one went dead.. up and runnig in 15 minuttes.. love this thing..
Jaro, thanks a lot
With a old trusty Nokia’s when I was typing a SMS i could always swith on a text editor/word choosing. How do i use it on my E61?
It’s enough to write name or surname into “To:” folder and send… of course if this name is unique in contact list.
a little update, it is also possible to write both part of the first name and last name of the person.
e.g. contact name : John Doe, you can type “J D” or “Jo Do”
@ Darrell
you should be able to use more than 160 characters to write a single sms. That has been a feature for every Nokia phone for years already. Check your manual..I don’t what’s different in your phone but all S60 phones should do it by default.
I can’t believe that this tip isn’t known to all. It’s like the ABC’s of all Nokia Symbian Phones. Anyway, they do make your messaging easier. I just can’t imagine any other way to do it.
Rather than typing ; you can use the return character (pressing 0, 3 times) to include multiple recepeints. All of these tips work on N and E series phones.
is there any software which can do spell check when i email/sms? and is there any software which can do T9?

Hi, love my E61 but would also like to know if there is a spell check available?
I would like to know how to put more elements under the shorcuts in the Desktop. I’ve seen screens with message alerts and other stuff, but i can only see the calendar note.
Thanks in advance.
i have an e62 and can recieve but not send a sms. i have tried entering the +1312 number and the +1408 for the msg centre number but i still can’t send a sms. Helpppppppppppppp
well, this works on all nokia.
theres a simpler way, example: diana piner
just type ‘di p’ on the contact & press send.
it’ll automatically send the created sms. if there are more than 1 name with di p, the contact list will automatically pop out to let you choose the correct contact.

Please help me!
i still cant find a sms or email spell checker for E61i, i upgraded my quickoffice with spell check, unfortunately only works for word but not with sms and email applications. please advice a specific software that enables predictive text or spell check on sms and email msgs.
thanks,
Mahd, I have never found a software that will do what you are looking for. If anyone has I would also like to know about it. The spell check in Quick Office works very well - if I really need to spell check an email on my e61 I copy the email into a new doc in quickoffice and then speck check that. a bit of extra effort but it works.
1 quick questions:
1. how to insert contact number taken from phone book into text message?
thanks
