Radio & The Nokia E61

Quite frequently I use my Nokia E61 to listen to the radio. I have posted about this a few times before. Neil sent me a great, simple way to start listening to UK & Irish radio stations on your Nokia E61 through a website called RadioFeeds To Go.

Neil writes:

Using the wifi and real mobile player it is possible to listen to streaming radio and here it in the UK it is even easier thanks to a great website called Radio Feeds.

All You need to do is point your browser to www.radiofeeds.co.uk/pda and select “RealOne” from the links. Then select the first letter of the station you want to listen to. For the greatest range choose B for the BBC.

Click on the “Sure” link next to the station and the real player will open and ask you to confirm that you want to connect.

It will then connect and load the station before streaming the station.

When I am away from home on business and in a hotel with wifi it is great to be able to still hear the stations I listen to at home. However, remember to take your charger as it’s an intensive use of the battery!

Thank you very much for the great tip Neil. Tomorrow I will post more about listening to the radio on your Nokia E61.

Does it work on GPRS or 3G?

  2. Neil Thompson Says:

I’ve not tried but I can’t see any reason why it wouldn’t. There may not be enough bandwidth on GPRS through and you will want to make sure you have an all you can eat data plan!

  3. Vinnie Says:

One problem I’ve noticed with RealPlayer on mobile devices is that a required port may be blocked by your GPRS provider. As a result, the stream will fail to get through to your handheld. Even with the use of wi-fi, you should ensure your device bypasses all firewalls.

  4. Neil Thompson Says:

Vinnie is correct that you need to have a UDP port open for Real Player to work. By default the range is 6970 to 32000 but can be restricted to a single port. Obviously this information is only of any use if you have control over the firewall and can make the change. I would be interested to know if anyone has any information about the use of Real Player at wifi hot spots.

In my country, GPRS / 3G is expensive. But my home wifi is free! However, I can’t get it to work on wifi though; the application just hang.

Can someone explain the following in plain English?

“you connect to the Internet at home, through your Wi-Fi access point (AP for short), which has full, unrestricted Internet access and can be freely configured. In this case, you must put your PDA in a DMZ by configuring your access point. (Note that plain port forwarding (NAT) won’t work!) Alternatively, if you don’t have/don’t want to use DMZ but have access to a RTSP proxy, you can also have access.”

    Pls help

Can somebody please explain to me how to make the said change to have the device bypass a firewall or open additional ports? Real Player on my E61 opens the links but times out after 3 to 4 seconds of streaming, and fails to play any sound. Thanks.

Works great on Cingular’s network in the US.

Your blog is a great resource, I check it daily.

    NEIL,

THANK YOU ! THANK YOU! THANK YOU !

This is the best thing I have come across !

I am an English guy, that relocated to the US 18months ago. I was considering subscribing to Sirius, specifically to be able to listen to Radio 1.

    This works great !

    Thank you.

    Hello everyone,

Firstly, let me apologize for double posting. Hope the moderator can remove one of them for me.

But the good news is that the program worked at my home AP but hung at my office AP. It must be the setting of my office AP; perhaps relating to a firewall setup that I do not know of. But I’m a happy user at home!

Thanks for the great information. I read the blog daily (or almost) now!

    GREAT STUFF!

CK & TC - the reason that it does not work for you is becuase your firewall does not have the required ports open to allow you to connect. It is not possible to bypass the firewall by changing anything on your device. You can only get this to work by changing the firewall. How you do that will depend on two things: the manufacturer of the firewall and who has the rights to make the changes.

Unless you are the administrator of your firewall I would think that you have zero chance of getting the required ports open so you will have to stick to using this at home.

Point to note is that this also applies to the Internet Radio Client mentioned in the next post - most stations seems to need unusual ports open.

Hi Neil, thanks for your useful post. I am the administrator of my home network, and I don’t have a firewall - or at least I think I don’t. I am using Airport Extreme after a DSL modem modem. Would this DSL modem be the one to blame? Should I try to access its menu? If I do, what changes in the firewall or the ports would I need to make? I really want to make this work… Thanks again.

is there a way to listen to an .asx stream on the E61?

  16. Andrew Sutton Says:

I do notice one thing about this though, it does’nt seem to work on a wifi network unless I am doing something wrong. It works fine if I use a data connection like GPRS, sound quality is great too, dont seem to be getting any buffer at all

  17. Jackbauer Says:

wat are ur network settings on real player wen connectin using wfi i.e.port numbers an stuff

  18. Sami Kallinen Says:

On a finnish network BBC streams worked fine on gprs and e61i. Used also on a number of home wifi networks without no problem. Works home in Amsterdam fine on Apple express Wiri router. At work does not work on wifi Apple Extreme. Although Realplayer on a browser on a laptop works just fine on the same network. Does this mean that the the Real Player client on e61i needs different ports than a realplayer desktop client? What is the request to the administrator to get it to work in that case. What exactly needs to be open in the firewall?

    thanks

My Nokia E65 can’t get through my wlan router. Can anybody help?
When using wireless at home I can browse the wifi-router homepage (192.168.0.1), but the Internet application won’t load internet pages.
I’ve tried different security settings, even totally open. Always the same at my Trendnet 611 BRP using default settings. At other routers internet is ok.

What’s strange is that the SIP phone application gets through, so I can make phonecalls but no internet. Can anyone explain this?

It was workin fine on gprs but now its says server time out. Please help me to solve the problem
