Radio Round The World

It’s a somewhat a surreal feeling sitting in a coffee shop in San Francisco on a Sunday afternoon and one minute listening to a radio station in American Samoa and then next minute listening to a station in Dublin for a few songs before moving on to a number of college radio stations in the UK & USA before ending up on a station in Jordan. All of this on my Nokia E61.

This Radio Round The World experience is possible using Nokia’s Open Source Internet Radio Client, which I wrote about here, together with a *GREAT* PLS file that Steve has created. Steve’s pls file contains about 75 radio stations and is being constantly updated. It is available for download here. Just download the file and transfer it to your shoutcast directory. You might need restart the radio application before the new PLS file is recognized and shows up.

Thank you Steve for putting together the PLS file.

    “transfer it to your shoutcast directory”

    Please explain more of that for me…

  2. Vinnie Says:

    Hi, I run http://TUNED.mobi and was wondering if this Internet Radio client will happily play both SHOUTcast and IceCast streams directly from your browser. Can they handle launched .pls and .m3u files or do they only accept manually input URLs?

  3. Steve Robbo Says:

    Let me know if there are any more stations anyone would like me to add. This should work with AAC, AAC+ and mp3 stations.

    hi E6 lovers,

    I am not able to recieve calls when I have my Internet radio switched on……………………is there a way out? Cheers

  5. Alessandro Says:

    Ciao

    I use the Internet Radio on my Nokia N91 everyday and I listen radio from Italy while driving to work. It’s a great experience to listen live radio over a mobile phone live.

  6. Steve Robertson Says:

    Hi Vinnie, I’ve only been able to get the client to work with manually input URLs. The .pls file was generated from a number of playlists, some of which were initially .m3u files.

  7. ACTPOHABT Says:

    Where is that “shoutcast directory”?

  8. Uwe Says:

    Hi Steve, would love to listen to German radio stations. Maybe you could add some or explain to me how to to that. Greetz, Uwe

  9. Steve Robertson Says:

    Hi Uwe,
    I will work on adding an additional, German, list. Give me a few days and I’ll have a go.

  10. Jonathan Says:

    I can’t find a “Shoutcast” directory either???

  11. Jonathan Says:

    Ok, I found the Shoutcast directory- it’s on the same level as the “Data” folder- and it cannot be accessed by File Manager in Nokia PC Suite.

  12. Steve Robertson Says:

    The issue with the Shoutcast directory has been mentioned before. Hopefully this’ll work:-

    http://www.e-series.org/archives/14

    I seemed to have found it easier, because I installed the application to my memory card.

  13. Steve Robertson Says:

    I’ve now added a (work in progress) German file, which can be downloaded from the following location:-

  14. manoj Says:

    hi steve i want to add few stations from my country United Arab Emirates so what should i do

  15. Steve Robertson Says:

    Hi manjo,
    If you want to add more stations, this is a great link I followed in order to edit the .pls file, and to add more stations:

    http://samgonzales.blogspot.com/2006/10/more-radio-stations-for-nokia-e61.html

  16. castanea Says:

    Hi

    How do you copy the latest.pls files to the shoutcast directory as it seems to be hidden in PC suite. The only directory I can get in PC suite is ‘data’.

    Thanks

  17. Jonathan Says:

    kk bottom line is you HAVE to install the application on external memory to use other than the default .pls file.

  18. Uwe Says:

    Steve, you’re great! Thanx a lot!

  19. Uwe Says:

    Hi Steve,

    where did you get the URLs of the German radio stations from? Would like to find the URLs of my favourite stations.

  20. Steve Robertson Says:

    Hi Uwe,

    I got the feeds from:-
    http://www.mikesradioworld.com/eu_de.html
    Very handy for getting a direct link for an individual player.

  22. Farhan Says:

    Thanks Steve , you even added Radio 1 FM 89 from Pakistan , now that’s a truely world radio , P.s everyone can listen only the ads here are in urdu most of the songs played here are in English

  23. Steve Robertson Says:

    Hi Dr Moe,

    You will need to save the file as a .pls, using Save As and selecting Save As Type - All Files, calling it whatever.pls. Good luck.

  24. Steve Robertson Says:

    I’ve updated the German file, which now has 53 entries:-

    Is some E-series Nokia able to play music trough bluetooth headset instead of integrated speaker?

  26. rick wong Says:

    i’m having a prob…

    i set cert check to off and let e61 install all apps. have upgraded firmware also.

    using web browser, when i try to download both sisx files, all i get is gibberish on screen.

    so using wap browser isntead…it looked like both sisx files were downloaded but e61 didn’t ask me where to save them files.

    so i dunno if the files are in my e61 or not. if they are, is there a default folder they are saved to and how can i access the 2 sisx files?

    since i have tried dl the sisx , my nokia PC suite doesn’t work no more…when i connect usb cable to phone, it doesn’t trigger the pc suite activation and the connection fails.

    what’s going on, pray tell, anyone?

  27. Steve Robertson Says:

    Hi Rick,

    The file should show in App. downloads, on the wal browser..

  28. Timmy O2L Says:

    Hi All,

    I was wondering if anyone with an E62 can suggest a good stereo headset. The E62 uses a 2.5mm headphone jack as opposed to the Nokia jack on the E61. As far as I know, stereo Bluetooth headsets don’t work on either.

  29. rick wong Says:

    finally got sisx files installed properly.

    fetch files onto desktop PC before putting them into e61.

  30. rick wong Says:

    hi steve,

    your “latest.pls” is appreciated.

    if u have the time, could u include the following Malaysian stations as well?

    * Red104.9 (Malay & English)
    * 988 FM (Chinese)
    * HITZ.FM (English)
    * MIX (English)
    * LIGHT & EASY (English)

  31. Brian Collins Says:

    2 things - what is both the audio and connection quality on that? And another thing, what kind of bill do you get at the end of the month to use that kind of bandwidth?

  32. Steve Robertson Says:

    Hi rick. I haven’t found many Winamp links for the radio stations you have given, but I’ll have a go.

    Hi Brian, The connection quality will vary on each one. As for the bandwidth, I mainly use mine on the E61 with WiFi and keep the cost down.

  33. Steve Robertson Says:

    There 88 stations in the Latest.pls file, and I’ve fixed a couple that weren’t resolving correctly.

    I’ll keep adding to it, as new stations start streaming mp3/aac.

  34. Chris Corbin Says:

    Dear Steve,

    Thanks for the excellent compilation. I am from the Caribbean but have been able to stay in touch using my Nokia E 61 when travelling.

    I noticed your recent additions of Jamaican radio stations. Would it be possible to add more Caribbean Stations - Barbados, Saint Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago etc?

    Attached is the link where a list of all online Caribbean Stations can be found.

    http://www.caribbeannews.com/radio.html

    Perhaps you could help in how I can add other stations manually that I find from time to time.

    Thanks

    Chris

    Hi guys!
    I have a question: Is it possible to listen to conventional radio with our E61 + any kind of headset?
    Thx a lot!
    Ja Parlem

  39. Nicolas Says:

    For those who want to listen to FIP and France Inter, just create a PLS file with the following:

    Title1=FRANCE INTER
