SIP and Native VoIP clients

This is the second installment in a series of posts about VoIP in the enterprise. Trevor’s first article is available here - VoIP In The Enterprise - A Revolution To Come.

You may well be asking why bother developing a proprietary client for the S60 3rd edition phones when SIP works just fine. Well the answer to this question is two fold; Firstly, most of the enterprise VoIP systems are only just starting to support SIP and have started with SIP trunks and not endpoint device support, after all, they make more money selling their handsets rather than others SIP handsets.

Secondly, it’s to do with features and expectations. If your organisation has an XYZ brand VoIP system implemented, there are certain features that are expected and the way to use them is already learned, implementing them in a native client makes sense, especially when you are going to get revenue from selling the client.

The native client is here to stay.

Here’s a list of some of the clients I know about with some info:

Client Types:

  • Standard refers to the Nokia SIP client built into the S60 3rd edition firmware
  • Native refers to a Developed Application

* Info from e-series.org response to my previous post

The Nokia E61 is now a Cisco Compatible Extension.
The Avaya announcement is available here.
The BroadSoft Announcement is available here.

The only thing that’s required to make the revolution seamless is for mobile operators to provide IP-PBX gateways with Signaling System 7 (SS7 or C7) for mobile – WiFi call hand off. This would allow a call to originate on one network and hand off to the other just as you can change cells on a mobile network.

I believe that as more operators, both fixed line and mobile/wireless, look for more opportunities, the converged device, like the Nokia E-Series, is an easy choice to provide more services at a lower cost to more customers.

Thanks for the excellent write-up Trevor. I look forward to part three. I can recommend reading the previous installment and its comment section. There is a lot of good information to be found.

Excellent writeup. Looking forward to the release of Cisco’s client. This feature (CIsco VOIP) was one of the reasons I bought the phone.

Is the Nokia E50 getting a firmware update?!

On the nokia business software site it says:
NOTE: You need software version 6.41.3.0 on your device.

  3. Hocki Says:

    Thanks for a great contribution.

I am sure that Voip clients both native and standard will be the future in mobile communications…..also with built in IM and other speciality yet to come.

However, in my opinion, we are not quite there yet. For example Cisco sccp is working great on E61 BUT the the Nokia SIP client built into the S60 3rd edition firmware are still struggling with NAT problems.

The security is also on a level that are not acceptable for those who makes very important businesscalls.

Hopefully we´ll see improvments very soon in this problems.

  4. Dmitry Pupkov Says:

Please, remove Avaya/One-X from table. One-X is not a protocol!! It’s a trdemark. You can add row “Avaya / native / One-X mobile edition (EC500) / Now”.
And OmniPCX is also not a protocol, but a trademark.
And please change “Alcatel” to “Alcatel-Lucent”.

  5. mark Says:

how do i get the detailed instructions for usines the e61 with Cisco or are the photos the beta program?

  6. Nona Maas Says:

I vote for Dmitry as maintainer of the list. Who seconds that?

  7. Jared Says:

How can i get a Hold of the cisco nokia E61 Voip Client. I have looked everywhere for this, and have not been able to find it.

  8. Trevor Says:

The Cisco VoIP client is still in Beta and not generaly available. If you want it you will need to contact Nokia directly and sign up to their Beta testing programe.

Sorry Dmitry I didn’t mean to offend anyone. I agree with Nona :-)

  9. Danny Says:

Hi, may I ask if anyone here could help me to set up my E61 to use other SIP service like Gizmo or Skype? What I really wish to do is when I’m using Wifi I would be able to receive and call other computer or SIP compatible devices. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  10. Vincent Says:

    Trevor,
do you know the link for joining the Nokia Beta testing program ?

    Thanks

    Vincent

  11. Sander Says:

I wish your site gave attention to the no 1 issue with E-series (and N series) devices. The echo problem after a bluetooth connection with non-Nokia carkits / headsets. This is a major problem for almost every E6x owner. And Nokia is still ignoring it.

  12. Alex Says:

    Hi Trevor,

I’ve been testing E61 for several days with CME and CCM and it is very impressive except it seems phone has issues with their “power saving” feature.

Whenever “power saving” is ON, E61 which is hooked up to the high-end Cisco Aironet stops responding to pings, also stops accepting incoming calls. With the “power saving” disabled phone’s uptime is unacceptable. Hope this will be corrected in the next E61 firmware.

Trevor, can you tell me where I can find the slim E61 desk stand you’ve got ? :)

  13. Hocki Says:

    Hi Danny!

Skype is not available för SIP but many many other providers are.

On this forum you can for example see how to configure your E61 for Voiptalk

… and here you have several other providers

It might be a little tricky but do not give up :)

    Good luck!

  14. Vinx - Vanilla Sky Says:

    Hey there,
I’ve set Gizmo to work with the E-61 basic internet phone software and it works great (already tested). On GPRS network though is not that nice if you consider there’s a lot of delay.

Besides I have no idea how to set it for Skype (and I’d definitely appreciate that more than gizmo as it’s more famous).

When I am back home tonight (Rome timeset) I’ll upload the info to set the phone with Gizmo. Now I’m from the phone but I’m pretty busy.

    Hugs. Vinx

  15. sam gonzales Says:

I havent tried Gizmo but I have truphone.com which works great with the SIP client on the unit already..

  16. Vinx Says:

Settings for Gizmo: go on Tools–>Settings—>Connection—>Sip Settings

Set a new profile and call it GIZMO.
    Service Profile: IETF
    Default Access Point: (choose one)
    Public User Name: sip:yourgizmonumber@proxy01.sipphone.com
    Use Compression: NO
Register: If Requested (once you have set everything you can choose ALWAYS so the INTERNET PHONE MODE will be always available)
    Use Protecion: No

    Server Proxy
    Address: sip:proxy01.sipphone.com
    Area: proxy01.sipphone.com
Username: yourgizmointernetphonenumber (check the USER DETAILS of your account profile to see it)
    Password: yourgizmopassword
    Allow Extended Routing: Yes
Transport type: UDP (u can set TCP on some phones it works… on mine doesn’t)
    Port: 5060

    Registering Server
    Address: sip:proxy01.sipphone.com
    Area: proxy01.sipphone.com
    Username: yourgizmointernetphonenumber
    Password: yourgizmopassword
    Transport Type: UDP
    Port: 5060

Then you go to Internet Phone Settings:
Set a New profile and call it GIZMO. Then choose the SIP PROFILE and (of course) choose Gizmo (previously created).

Then you go to main menu, CONNECTIVITY–> INTERNET PHONE–> and choose the default profile (GIZMO for now) and click on REGISTERING STATE and again on GIZMO.

The phone will register to the network and you’ll be able to call GIZMO users (even if they’re at home with the pc standard gizmo client) and to receive phone call. I’m not able yet to receive phone call from GIZMO users… I guess I should set my phone to be in stand by of internet phone calls.

If anyone ever set SKYPE up on E-61 pls contact me. (ilvinx@gmail.com)

    Thank you. Vinx.

ps: i’ll be in Slovenia for the weekend dued to work reasons so I won’t be able to post so often…
pps: sorry for the bad english but i’m really tired….

  17. Sam Says:

    Skype is not SIP !!

For usage of Skype on E-Series we would need a Skype Client (wich is available for Windows, Linux, Windows Mobile, but NOT for Symbian)

  18. Idea Connect » Blog Archive » The Nokia E61 around NexTone Headquarters Says:

[...] If you like gadgets especially smart phones/dual mode phones(cellular + Wi-Fi) the Nokia E61 should definately be in your vocabulary and perhaps christmas wish list.  It’s one of the most popular-cutting edge smartphones in the market today. Only available overseas, the E61 packs a bunch of features including - Quadband, EDGE, 3G,WiFI which makes it a very strong “multimedia computer” however one of the most overlooked or unused features of the phone is the built in SIP client that comes along with the unit. This was one of the toughest phones for me to get since Cingular carries the E62 in the US (which lacks 3G,WiFI and Quadband) and cell phone enthusiast in the US scrambled for the E61 and I was the first one to get it at the office a few months ago. I spotted the first E61 at our User Forum in Palm Springs actually - Rob Ibbitson (Voice Chief Architect) from Interoute has one too. These days there are two more E61’s floating around the office (Nick Turner VP of Product Marketing and Andrew Colby VP of Customer Solutions) now have one, but not yet using the SIP client though. It seems to me that there are more  VoIP consumer applications out there for the E Series such as Tivi, Truphone, Gizmo, and others popping every day- than for the enterprise which is what these phones were made for - part of a fixed to mobile convergence solution for the mobille workforce. Companies are looking at FMC as a solution to increase productivity by integrating mobile devices to business, one phone number for all calls and benefit from cost savings by least cost routing to control long distance and international calling. I’ve read about Cisco call manager and Avaya one-X  but not seen one personally yet. What do you think - do these smart-dualmode phones have a chance to be as popular in the enterprise space as they are in the consumer space?  and what are some of the major obstacles and challenges they will face?   If you want to read further into this topic check out these two blog posts which talk about the E61 in the Enterprise space: VoIP in the Enterprise- A revolution to Come and SIP and Native VoIP Clients   [...]

    Morning!

I have a nice and new E61 with the SCCP Cisco CallManager Client installed, WiFi AP etc… but I can’t make it work. Please, someone who send me or show me a place for the step by step configuration?

Does it need any aditional configuration in the CCM (Ver 5.04)?

    Thanks a lot!!

    Hello Daniel,

here is a site where you can see how to configure your phone.
Do you think you could sent me the SCCP client to me? Then I would like to try to make it work as well.

hi there, i have sip working on my mobile with callmanager express, but its useless to us as it needs to be on the same site as callmanager express box (it uses the mac address). How can i get the client/or where do i sign up to the beta program??
sorry i know this has been asked already, but can’t find any replies.

    Hello
I have Nokia E70 that works with cisco SIP proxy server. I look for SCCP client for E serias , that allow me to works with Cisco Call Manager 4.1(3)
Where I can found SCCP cient for Nokia E series.

  24. Marcello Says:

According to what I can read - and understand - in this article, there is no more a thing like a SIP standard. SIP has become just a protocol which any company can customise, introducing new features and incompatibilities. Instead of an open standard available on Symbian phones and landline phone lines, we have a table like the one above, with every brand (and, in the future, every model) having its own incompatible features just like headphones and chargers… All the power going from the consumer to the firms. I wanted to buy a SIP phone to integrate my wireless home LAN with my mobile, but it cannot work, that’s hopeless. I would have to choose the IP telephony provider first; then check if there is a mobile phone featuring a compatible client; then subscribe to the first, buy the second, and remain tied to both firms forever. No way. These applications are likely to remain in the corporate market, while the consumer will have to revert to gizmo toys like the proprietary Skype phone. If there is anything wrong in what I am saying, please will anyone reply.

  25. david england Says:

GUYS. I THINK I FOUND A WORK AROUND FOR THE DELAY EXPERIENCED BY THE E61 VOIP CLIENT. Download smart roaming (http://www.smartroaming.com/downloads.php?type=client&mid=4), specify your wifi network as a provider in options and smartroaming as the default access point in sip settings for your profile….. bob’s your uncle! Almost zero latency!!!!!!!!!! Now we can all experience voip on the e61 as it shd b. :D

  26. terry Says:

does the sip client/internet phone only function over wifi? or can it be told to utilise the 3g connection..? also, can the client be registered with more than one sip proxy simultaneously?

  27. Bertin Says:

Are there any news regarding the release date of the official version of the Cisco SCCP client?

  28. Hocki Says:

Last news I heard about the SCCP client was that Cisco needs now to confirm it before the release. At the moment it looks like it will be released in the end of march.

  29. Sam Says:

    Ok,

here is some Info from NOKIA:

Release date will be april 15th.

Now the “bad” news. During the Early Filed Try (EFT) the made some changes at the client at the step from EFT1.30 to EFT1.37.
They implemended some new WLAN functions, wich are in fimrware PR3.

The final release will also need this functions. E61 is on PR3, and the E61i, E65 and E90 will also have this functions.

BUT E60 and E70 are on PR2, and wont get a FW upgrade. You can use the SCCP EFT client v1.30, but not final release. And usage of EFT is not supported by Nokia (do it on your own risk)

  30. tim71 Says:

VoIP pn E70 was usable over 3G before the FW update, that recently became available. Now the problem is, that long awaited STUN support is implemented, but has ho user interface to apply the settings. At the same time VoIP over 3G got set to disabled and again there is no user interface to modify this setting. So… somehow working application is now rendered almost totally unusable.

I would say that I had never been so pissed off @Nokia than now - although I had been using Nokia phones vor 9 years now…

  31. Ralf Says:

    Ola Senores,

Firmware PR3 for E60 seems to be availabe. Dated 20-11-06, but since now available, strange.

Come on guys, start online updater and tell me if SCCP 1.39 works.

  32. Bertin Says:

Well, it’s April and way past the rumored release date o fthe SCCP client…. Or did I miss anything?
Any news when it will be out? I’m afraid that by the time it’ll be available, I won’t have my Nokia anymore… :(

  33. George Says:

    Hey guys,

I just loaded what I believe was the 1.30 SCCP client onto my E61 (running firmware 3) and, well, now reading this I should have probably put the 1.37 in after I installed it or just do 1.37 initially, but the file names confused me — the installation for 1.30 was somewhat sluggish but it installed, but then I could not make GSM calls. So I turned it off and back on, and, well, it’s been sitting that the “NOKIA” blue-on-white screen for about 10 hours now, literally.

I’d also like to go on the record for saying that I have gotten new phones every 2-4 weeks for the past six years of my life and this is the first phone that I got that I did not have to do that with, and when I got a new phone for just under two months one of my best friend’s (who has a bad history with phone care) had it and I’ve never seen this guy take care of a phone so well — one scuff when I got it back 4 months ago and it’s worked flawlessly up until now (I kept the firmware up-to-date with NSU frequently) and so now I’m stuck. I’m debating hooking it up to Phoenix and trying to flash it, as I did that with a 6270 that I then cured for other issues… but I’m not sure where to go. I know it’s probably a lost cause but I kinda would like my phone book back — 400 contacts, each with at least 2 numbers and 1 e-mail address, not to mention other attributes.

Any help at all would be great — I can’t believe I made this mistake (I’m an IT and telephone system administrator for a living) I just wanted my Nokia companion to connect to my damn CallManager flawlessly.

    George

  34. George Says:

Thank god - read a post about a guy who screwed up an N95 trying to flash it with something that quit 90% through, and said that 3-*-(green/send) didn’t work… it did for me!

This time I loaded 1.37 and it powered back on without lag. Now to get it working…

  35. Bertin Says:

Finally I got the official version 1.40 SCCP, but of course it’s not compatible with our Call Manager 4.0… It requires 4.1 or higher…
Great! All this wait for nothing :-(

  36. Browchay Says:

Wheer can I find the call manager client for the E61 ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated !!

    (Browchay@gmail.com)

    Thanks in advance.

  37. Jason Says:

Your link for the E61 is refering to Cisco Compatibility for Wireless NOT for the SIP. :-)
Cisco doesn’t have a Cisco Compability testing for SIP.

  38. Olivier Says:

Bertin you said that the official version of SCCP client doesn’t work with CCM 4.0

Do anyone know if previous(beta) versions worked with CCM 4.0 ?
If yes is it possible to send one to me ?

(the Nokia SIP client) but no success.
I read some have a SCCP client for the E70.
Where can I get it ?

  42. thomas Says:

the build in sip client wokrs also with innovaphone pbx phones.
so there is no need for proprietary clients like for cisco or what else.

only thing - semit attendant transfer is not working - bug on nokia sip client - maybe tehy fix it in the next software release

aslo the nokia phone has problems when making transfer and there is a codec change involved.

    greetings
