Calling All Developers - Please Develop The Following Solution…
Calling All Developers - Please Develop The Following Solution… (I promise to buy a gazillion copies)
I traded some email with a friend about applications we would like to see on Symbian S60 3rd edition, with excellent support for all E-Series devices. We are both fairly new to Symbian but have used other mobile platforms before.
My friend sent me the following email:
It’s probably fair to assume that many of you, that are currently using the European E61 or the North American derivative E62 - have arrived at the world of Nokia, through the likes of Palm.
Odds are that if you have ever used a PDA before, then you have most certainly at the very least tried a Palm unit.
Many of you, like myself, may have come to your new E-Series smartphone from the world of Treos, the well respected Palm smartphone.
Which brings me to my next point… As good as our Nokia units are, there are a few things i miss about the venerable Treo.
Don’t get me wrong - the Symbian OS of the Nokia E Series is far superior to the cerca 1990s Palm operating system… but there are a few things about that old device, that would only make my current E61 better…
First, L.E.D. Control:
I’m not sure about the rest of you, but the fact that my nokia sports a really cool and crisp white LED, but that I rarely see it blinking - is dissapointing. I know, it’s active when you receive e-mails, but no matter what setting you set it to, you get 30 seconds of flashing upon email receipts - if that! I’m dissapointed that Nokia hasn’t developed (wink, wink to all you crafty developers out there) a function into the phone that lets you set what event the LED alerts you for.
The LED should be able to indicate various occurences: received emails, or text messages, or missed calls, or voicemail or all four. Many of you may disagree, but personally, i’d like to see it flash at a certain interval to let me know that my phone is within range of the network - just like the treo flashes green when it’s connected to a GSM signal!
Second, configurable volume buttons:
The E61 is designed in such a way that it is extremely comfortable, when sitting in your left hand, to use your thumb to activate the volume buttons. When in your right hand, the index finger or middle finger rests easily on the volume buttons.
My point? Having also been an extensive blackberry user (for work), I can appreciate the use of a scroll wheel on a device.
On a treo, using a third party app, you can configure the volume buttons (which are located in the same spot as the E61’s) to scroll through the currently displayed screen. The reality is, the only time you need them to function as volume buttons is when you’re on a call… other than that, they’re basically useless.
Wouldn’t it be more efficient if you were able to scroll through a menu list, document or email, using the volume buttons to scroll up or down? Try it. Open an email then press the volume buttons, see how comfortable scrolling like that could be?
Oh, and by the way, don’t get me started on the damn voice recorder button… that single app has used up more memory than anything else I have ever done on my smartphone. At last check, i had over 35 recordings of background noise followed by… um… me, uttering stuff that’s to explicit… even for this board.
That button should be configurable, and if nothing else made a ’select’ button for when scrolling with the volume keys.
Third, an on-screen number pad with alphanumeric keys:
Alpha- what? You know, so that when you’re in a bind you can dial the 1-800-Flowers number without having to borrow someone else’s phone to see which number corresponds to which letter.
The Treo has one that you can touch screen with. I know it saved me a few times when i was given numbers that consisted of alpha-numeric keys.
Fourth, multiple calculators:
I don’t know about many of you, but i can’t remember the last time i went out and bought a calculator. From scientific to basic, and many in between, the treo has a plethora of calculators built in, all of them with distinctive functions that are sure to meet various user needs.
And yes, I know about Calcium, god bless their souls, if not for them, we’d all be suffering from repetitive stress injuries from having to click buttons 15 times to find the answer to a simple number division.
Fifth, screen dimming:
On a treo, you can have your display set to maximum brightness, but, when in darker environments, to save battery and keep from going blind, a quick click of a button and you immediately dim the screen to it’s lowest level – often saving battery and eyesight. How often have many of you been blinded by your E61 when viewing a message in the middle of the night?
If there are any crafty software developers out there that think they could make some of these improvements to our beloved E-series - step up!
Let’s make these devices the ultimate in customizable communicators!
RME
Thanks RME. I should mention that RME wrote the above on his E61 using a ThinkOutside Bluetooth keyboard. He travels light - no computer.
I’ll add one application I would like to see for the E61:
- “iPedia” or a similar, quick and easy application which lets you access information on wikipedia without launching a browser.
I’ll leave this open ended - what is your list of applications you would like to see on S60 3rd edition.

About the Wikipedia app, you can try with Joca Browser, a j2me client with online access.

As Ed:s friend wrote there is many things yet to develop on our phones before they are ready. Unfortunately the name is not anymore E61 when they are ready because they will never be ready…but that is the technique of today
Talking about the voice recorder I agree that the buttom is totally in the wrong place and who needs a voicerecorder with capacity of 1 minute. I would like to record for example a business meeting (at least one hour) but that is not possible unless I have not missed anything.
Another thing for developers would be to get the E61 working as an remote control for example DVD, TV, etc. As it is now I haven´t found a use for the IR port (last time I used IR on a mobile phone was 8-9 years ago connecting my laptop with the gsm using it as a modem).
This is little out of topic BUT… after I upgraded to the latest firmware the equalizer on the musicplayer is not working in the right way anymore. As soon as a new song starts the equalizer is off (now bass for example) but if I adjust the volume the bass is back. Anyone else facing this problem?
What a great device we have, soon we can say that here is two different types off peoples usig mobile devices, “one that would like to have a E61 and another one having a E61″
:)

You know what I want? A profile manager that just changes profiles based on the time of day/week. So it can be silent between 11pm and 7am every day (while I’m asleep), then silent from 9am to 5.30pm monday to friday (while I’m at work) and on a general profile the rest of the time.
I mean, how hard can that be to create?
November 28th, 2006 at 3:12 am
A Junk mail filter please
November 28th, 2006 at 3:15 am
A tv remote control would be nice, put the ir to use!
November 28th, 2006 at 4:07 am
outook support. email sync. External battery back for more time with bult in external wheel for scrolling. only way to get it done
November 28th, 2006 at 4:53 am
Ed, E50 has a configurable LED. You can set up on what occasions it will blink. So, the solution is ready, it’s only not implemented in E61. I would appreciate if it was possible to set up an interval too.
November 28th, 2006 at 4:58 am
All I have to say is - Thank you for saying this! Hopefully third party app developers or even better - Nokia - will listen to our prayers`
November 28th, 2006 at 4:59 am
You just read my mind! Great that you listed the apps! Add two more,
- Wlan roaming
I always need to choose my wireless networks! Would be cool if there would be a function to “auto connect to trusted WLAN”
- Skype (as we all want)
skype will be released 1st of december for symbian BUT only for 3phones…and it will function that you call a “in-network” number which connects your call to a skype server…skype out is not a function that will work though (they want u to call internationall calls via their network)…
if you want more info just mail me: alexwidegren@mail2web.com

Hi to all,
I have been using my Nokia E-Series E-70 since last July.
One of biggest problem I face about Phone directory is as below and I assume that the same thing will be there in E-61, E-62 etc… too..
When you receive a call from some known person but even then it doesnot show the name, but just the number. Why ? Because you stored his number without City/Country code which is not needed for you to dial, but when he calls it shows his city/country code and thus it doesnot match with your phone book so it shows it as number and not as Name.
This was not the case when I used other Nokia Phones with their own Nokia Platform software. In fact I used Nokia 6820 & 6822 both of same Folding Keyboard type, but it never showed a Number instead of name.
However Nokia E-70 which is so advanced made such mistakes.
Does anyone know reason and have solution then please inform me.
Another thing is that in E-70 (Or may be same with E-60, E-61, E-62) there is no way to search by Phone Number, you can only search by name, This is most irritating. If you got miss call on your phone but it didnot show name but only number then How do we find whose number is this.
Can anyone comment and give solution to this matter.
November 28th, 2006 at 5:10 am
On the E62, you can “dial” letters, by holding down the Chr key (bottom right corner). Is it possible that these features would be included in the next E61 release?
That would take obviate the need for the on-screen dial pad…
November 28th, 2006 at 5:14 am
i just want to see more options of re-mapping buttons:p
November 28th, 2006 at 5:43 am
Same as you, I would like the LED light to blink if I got SMS, MMS not only E-Mails. Another thing you’ve said is the screen light “How often have many of you been blinded by your E61 when viewing a message in the middle of the night?” happens every single night!
I wish their was something I could do to change the (Profile) to meeting automaticley whenever I have a meeting in my schedule.
This is what I’ve been thinking about lately, thank you for making us share.
November 28th, 2006 at 5:45 am
@ Rich
Exactly! thank you. And waiting to hear the real thing coming in true.
November 28th, 2006 at 6:18 am
Having used (and still using) a PSION 5MX (with approx. 1000 apps available under EPOC32), I would most certainly need asap a database software, such as DATA on Psion (for handling customers follow up and the like).
E-Series looks to me as a nice and helpful site for intensive and demanding users: also have a look at http://www.psioneering.co.uk/digest.html for any further tips and assistance.

Opera mini has access to Wikipedia. Not only that - it doesn’t look crappy like the ferrari mods.
November 28th, 2006 at 8:18 am
I think LED controller is now possible, just a little work to make what you want.
Actually I know two apps that make it work:
Instango and Remind Me, both works with the led.

Fantastic post, I really want to put this on my blog once I get home.
This is officially the first comment I have left on someones blog via my E61!
OK, back to organic chemistry now.
November 28th, 2006 at 9:03 am
Regarding the on-screen number pad with alphanumeric keys point… this surprised me as a long time blackberry user. On my old BB7280, it just “did the right thing” and if you punched letters during an IVR prompt, say to spell a name or something, it worked.
Jason: thanks for the Chr tip… will try it. But it’s a pain to have to hold down another key.
-A.
November 28th, 2006 at 9:15 am
For wikipedia, use opera mini. It works and save on your GPRS if you don’t have unlimited data plan.
November 28th, 2006 at 9:50 am
True. It’s a waste of a perfectly bright blinking LED. I look at it all the time wishing it would do more.
November 28th, 2006 at 9:51 am
An intuitive spelling function would be great. Like it will guess words you are trying to type, etc. Standard numeric keypad phones have this, but I’m unsure why you can’t have it on Nokia’s QWERTY pad. I use my E61 as a word processor, so it would be helpful if there was a spell checker, too. However, as the E61i is right around the corner, maybe these things will be addressed.

I’m sorry to be offtopic here but since one person in the comments posted a firmware bug, i would like to invite this community to go to http://www.e61blog.blogspot.com which is entirely dedicated to firmware bugs on the E61.
November 28th, 2006 at 12:53 pm
I would also add AD2P-support. Now that I finally have these bluetooth headphones…
Come to think of it, I’ve always been fairly happy with my devices, but each one of them had unexplicable frustrations. (…, P900, Treo 600, Treo 650, Clié UX-50, Clié NX-70, E61) Anybody else feel that way?
When my wife says I look stupid walking around with my E61, Bluetooth dongle hanging by the side down a short cable, which is itself connected to a Nokia Audio-adaptor, wearing these wireless headphones. I think she’s got a point.
November 28th, 2006 at 12:57 pm
There are S60 programs that allow nokia phones to become remotes and advanced profile features. I think it is Psiloc Total IR (or something like that). It works with older S60s I haven’t tested it on my E62 personally but my roommate has used it before on his 3650.
SmartProfiles is a program that switches your active profile based on time of day and possibly other events.
Might want to google these but the problem is that they are not freeware. They are both shareware I believe and ultimately you have to pay for them.
I want a program like Nokia Sensor brought back - I don’t think they support it anymore. It would allow easy messaging via bluetooth and bring back little bluetooth profiles. As a college student that could work really well during large lectures when you need to find some help or just want to waste time chatting. Possible applications in a business setting and most-likely in the major cities like New York.
November 28th, 2006 at 1:20 pm
Lots of nice ideas here. Coming from the good ol’ P800 I miss scrolling wheel and the alarm app.
Hocki: You’re right about the players EQ not being activated until adjusting the volume up or down after a new song is loaded.
My keyboard back-light is a bit hit or miss and the sound is too low with the hand-free (cable version)
November 28th, 2006 at 2:13 pm
I’d be interested in a one-touch way to forward calls. Where I live, mobile coverage doesn’t through to my home and I forward to a land line. Haven’t figured out how to shortcut that process as quickly as on a Razr

For “led notification” we can use Remind Me from http://www.mobifunsoft.com/RemindMe.html!

Ed,
I need a golf score card application … really. Intellisync is no longer bringing it on.
Any help from your readers out there would be helpful.
http://mye61.com/e61/2006/11/28/need-a-golf-score-card-application-on-the-nokia-e61-and-nokia-e62-intelligolf-bad-review/
For the rest needed (on the e61):
going back to standby always requires two touch (can it be one?? please)
1) key-mapping (not just the email key, but in general)
2) I find the idea of Jason brilliant (and simple)
3) ability to forward text messages with 3rd party email apps
4) office apps should be much faster
5) no touch but a turning wheel would be a good addition
6) spell check / predictive writing
7) context based number input (eg more intelligence that the phone “knows” when numbers are required : prevents holding this annoying blue button)
9) access groups should be integral / universal for all apps in phone
In terms of Apps :
1) stock monitor / watch
2) good sudoku app fully using the widescreen / jog ability
3) Skype client
Best,

I would love to be able to insert details in my contacts into SMS with a click or two clicks. Now, I have to copy it down, on paper, then type it into my SMS. This function used to exist in old old old nokia phones.
If contacts in Gdlink (3rd party email like blackberry) could be synced or integrated into the Nokia contacts, that would be perfect. Now i have two sets of contacts in the phone.

In Settings -> Connections -> Access point groups -> create a group, including the WLAN networks you usually use. After that, you can tell your applications to use the group, and WLAN roaming works! The native email application supports this, as well as some other apps.

This may not be the most appropriate forum for this but this blog is probably the most active e61 blog on the net, plus, I guess my question somewhat is related to this post…vaugely.
Has anyone attempted to use the e61 (any series 60 3rd edition phone) with the new Fossil Bluetooth Watch?
Thanks in advance for any help!
November 28th, 2006 at 11:33 pm
e61 would be nicer with A2DP Profile for Bluetooth headset. i want to get want of those BT headset.
have you people have any trouble with sound quality of the player? i mean, when i plug in my headset the phone detects it as another mono headset.why is that?
November 29th, 2006 at 4:13 am
I would like to be able to lock/unlock the phone with a different combination of keys, rather than the top-left and bottom-left. Those keys are difficult to reach when using the phone left-handed…. how about an up up down down combo with the joystick…?
November 29th, 2006 at 7:16 am
I definately agree on remapping the voice recorder buttons to use as scroll buttons! Voice recorder is the least functional item for me.
Aside from the LED notification on messages other than email, I wish I could use the LED as a flashlight. Did you know once your battery runs out of juice and the phone shuts off, holding the on/off button will turn on the LED and can be used as a flashlight?
November 29th, 2006 at 10:32 am
The thing i miss most from my blackberry is shortcuts. SPACE key takes you a page down in the email app, pressing R to reply to a email and such.

Great ideas!
One thing I really miss is the timed profiles.
When I go into a meeting I want to set it to ‘Silent’ or ‘Meeting’ for a short period before it reverts back to my ‘General’ profile.
At the moment I often forget to reset it and miss a bunch of calls/messages as it’s still silent
November 29th, 2006 at 7:49 pm
SmartProfiles won’t install on my E62. I don’t think it is Series 3 compatible
November 29th, 2006 at 10:14 pm
Spellcheck for email.

November 30th, 2006 at 7:41 am
Why not try to make the E61 a real business phone rather than a relooked typical Nokia S60 with a keyboard ?
To start with, here are 2 basic requirements :
- email application should be able to correctly read and format HTML-formatted mails
- calendar application should allow for sending meeting invitations and accept/reject/delegate received meeting invitations.

How about some info about getting WIFI to work on the E62. I know that Cingular crippled the device for sale in america, however I’m not sure if they’ve gone though the trouble to release a redesign of the hardware or if they mearly cut it out of the operating system. My company is beginning to purchase the E62 devices for our executives and my MIS department, and my only complalint about the device is the lack of local lan wifi use. I’d like to be able to use my wifi at home etc to be able to get my mail and download files or attachments from my netowrk without using their slow packet data as the data bearer. Any info? Any thoughts? Or maybe just forward my nastygram to Nokia

How about also auto checking more then just 2 pop mail accounts.
November 30th, 2006 at 4:19 pm
Hi Matthew,
The Nokia E62 is a different device than the E61. There is no WiFi radio on the device so you can’t get it to work… sorry. But there is the E61, E60 and the E70, all with WiFi
November 30th, 2006 at 9:21 pm
to Mr.Jani>>>
if you have the same number saved under more than two different names it wont come up as a name when you recieve an incoming call. make sure the numbers don’t duplicate in the address book…

To : MAX
Thanks & I have just downloaded trial version of Mobile Search and I will try the same.
TO : Jeb
I am able to use 4 POP Mail accounts on my Nokia E-70, I dont know about E-61 or E-62, but its very easy as you have to create more account as much as you can. At a time you can log and download one mail account, so go one by one.

Hi all, I won’t bother with who posted what, just wanna say some things of my own, and also to help some of u who have some troubles
>E61 working as an remote control - yeah, this would be cool, I hope Psiloc will launch its application very soon. Psiloc Total IR and several toher 3rd party apps don’t work, believe me, I tried like a dozen of them
>A profile manager that just changes profiles based on the time of day/week - there are like 10 good apps for this, I will mention just Smart Profiles, Class Mute 1.00, and Profile Switcher. All of these can be obtained through Russian sites like http://www.smart60.ru or http://www.series60.ru
>details in my contacts into SMS - send it like Bussiness Card. No problem with that
>lock/unlock the phone - try mLock, or Handy Keylock, or AutoLock… all of these apps work just fine.
>more then just 2 pop mail accounts - I have like 5 POP accounts on my E61, no problem with that, and have an Mail4Exchange through mail2web. It works perfectly.
Hope this was a bit helpful.
What I would like, is free apps. I hate paying
December 4th, 2006 at 1:10 am
the big thing that I miss from my Treo, and I’m suprised no-one has mentioned this, is the threaded texts
December 4th, 2006 at 4:53 am
Hi to all
First of all, CONGRATULATIONS TO THE ADMIN - THIS BLOG IS A MUST-READ FOR ALL E-SERIES OWNERS.
And about the topic: since my nokia 6600 I notice that the phone is unable to recognize a phone number in a SMS, matching it with my Contacts. It’s really anoying when my Operator send me a message telling that number xxxxx made me a call and then I have to search through Contacts to find if the xxxx is a known number or not…
This still happens with my E62. It surprises me, because cheaper phones do this job (ex.: siemens c75 - entry level phone). Does anyone have a solution?
Cheers for you all, pals.
December 5th, 2006 at 8:15 pm
All I really want is FULL Outlook support. Papyrus can grab my calendar and contact info, why not my Outlook e-mail? It can’t be that much harder to get the sync to go through for e-mail just like calendear and contacts. Anybody know of anything to do that?
I don’t need immediate access to my e-mail since I’m not in that kind of profession, but, to grab it in the morning to take with me, respond at my leisure during the day (or know when it is something urgent) would be worth its weight in gold to me.
I’m coming from Windows Mobile, ALL the 3rd party calendar apps let you grab a copy of your e-mail from Outlook to take with you.
December 6th, 2006 at 3:14 am
How could I forget the eBay client in my earlier comment??
_The_killer_app_ I’m dreaming of is an eBay client/alarm where you enter an item# and let the E61 fix the rest. The version 1.0 should be an alarm device (auction end “sync”) and version 2.0 should be able to bid in the last 5 seconds (not easy with slow access/low bandwidth) - even turned off in the middle of the night?
keep up the nice blog!

How about an anti-theft software for your E61? I am now on trial with this nifty program, that gives the location of the thief too. http://www.bak2u.com

I have an e61 with firmware 2.0618.06.05 . i have the same problem with the sound on the music player–for each new song i must adjust the volume in order for it to come through in hi-fidelity. unacceptable.
The wi-fi is not good. I have to turn off the power-saving in order to get decent wi-fi reception, and to use SIP internet phone capabilities, which results in very poor battery life. If I am connected to the network, I can get around three or four hours out of a battery. No es bueno.
After latest firmware update, I cannot access the “call” menu under tools>settings. It just takes me back to the general menu when I click on “call”. Anyone else have this problem? It would seem serious, if not in fact dire. i first noticed this when i tried to adjust the default settings for my voice-recognition dialing. is there any other way to change this aside from tools>settings>call ?
i have probelms with my gps unit, lp3w, though im not sure if this has anything to do with the e61. It seems to work with the satellites only when it wants to, which is obviously dissapointing.
i get “enhancement not supported” frequently when i attempt to attach my nokia stereo headset to the popport of the e61. Later, it works fine. I don’t understand how this is… how well do bluetooth stereo headphones work? I am scared of owning yet another personal effect that requires charging, but right now the option seems fairly attractive….
otherwise, I am quite happy with this phone. it is by far the greatest phone i have ever owned, though admittedly I don’t come from a land of pda and treos.

Does anyone else have a problem with files not appearing in file manager? I mean, no files at all. There are files on the phone, but they aren’t in file manager.
I also have many invisible email messages eating up memory because I had to uninstall blackberry connect and reinstall it on the extended memory card.
Almost all of my phone memory is eaten up by data I can’t even see.
And I agree that the voice recorder button is in an awful location. I’m constantly turning it on by mistake.
Overall, I still love the phone. Just want to solve my issues.
December 11th, 2006 at 2:01 am
the alarm mode off course,
i just can’t set more advanced setting on the alarm.
Now, I’m still use the old clock to wake me up every morning…
December 13th, 2006 at 7:29 am
What about a more full-featured address book that allows searching for more than just first name/last name?
Got users that want to see all contacts in a given region or given company name, for example. Treo 650 does it.
Current work-around is not great, but make First Name = Company Name, Last Name = Owner’s first & last name. Great for the phone, but can’t sync with Notes or Outlook in that format.
December 15th, 2006 at 2:27 am
What I’m really missing? A decent PIM. Oh if only Agendus would make a version for Symbian S60V3……………
Papyrus doesn’t work for me. With meeting times behind the text it is not clear enough.
I now use Aquacalendar, latest version is OK but it lacks a weekview with blocks and needs too many buttons to be pushed before entering a meeting.

For “led notification” we can use Remind Me from http://www.mobifunsoft.com/RemindMe.html!

I am surprised that no one seems to want a financial calculator. A business phone without a business calculator seems a bit pointless. The spreadsheet app is too bug ridden to be a substitute. Also an auto disconnect from wlan would be handy. I browse and forget to disconnect, and am pissed when i get back to the phone an hour later and the battery is gone. The podcast app is amazing. Just wish it woild remember up to where i listened last and continued from there. All in all I love the phone though! Good job Nokia!

helloooo! guys how about the simplest of all… silly things ..like no ability to cut copy or paste in messages or documents?
or for the device to pick up a name of a contact as you type IN THE SUBJECT line of an email… why the heck do they make you go down to Add recipient? there are so many of these stupid oversights… not being able to email messages that came in as text messages? i mean come on!! no spell check, no avi support for video files.. the list goes on and on… HELP!!

Heres a few suggestions off the top of my head in no particular order:
- The phone has some ability to do text-to-speech for reading out contact names for example. What about being able to tell it to read emails/SMS messages out aloud while you are driving. Very handy.
- The font size for emails is way too big. Why can’t we have the same zooming in/out ability for emails that the browser has? Or at least be able to specify a font size for it to use.
- Speaking of which, the zoom feature in the browser only goes down to 50%. There are times where it would be good to zoom out even more.
- What about a “open link in new window” feature in the browser? Just like a real one…
- Fix the annoying clicking between tracks when listening to music via headphones.

How about the ability to store notes for tasks? This is a biggie for me that I’m still getting used to.

Greetings to all E-series lovers…
I really with much of the “requirements” mentioned above, as they are really missing items and things that people would look for in a device of this class (and price)…
And, for ppl recommending applications, for like time-based profile changing… Why would I need to BUY an extra application when a much simpler phone implements it? I’m not talking about using my phone as a remote control. It’s not expected simply from a phone. But, having more LED notifications or changing profiles or multiple alarms… These are not extras and I would not need to buy anything other than my PHONE to get these…
Nokia would have no force upon us, it’s beloved customers, to go and spend more money, just to feed some company that relies on Symbian programming… At least, they can provide what others do…
Greetz and respect…
