Application Switching on the Nokia E61
I have used a number of different mobile operating systems over the years. However, I am actually a fairly new user to Symbian S60.
A feature I today take for granted, but was pleasantly surprised when I discovered it, is the ability to see all active/open applications and easily move between the applications. I am sure that many are familiar with this feature but if you like me, move to the Nokia E61 from the Treo or from another non Nokia based Smartphone it might be a feature that you are new to. I am sure you will find this nifty little feature very useful.
Press and hold down the menu key (the key directly to the right of the joystick) to see a list of all active applications. You can easily switch between the applications on your Nokia E61 by using the joystick. As a reader, kindly pointed out, to close an open application press the backspace key. Jim, another supportive reader pointed out that you can also use the application key to step through and select an app from the list. A short press will highlight the next app on the list, a long press will switch you to it.
It's very simple but one of the shortcuts/features I use daily on my Nokia E61.

Thanks Josh. I forgot that one. I’ll update the post.

I think only Symbian S60 has the feature, multitask/multithread. Mine, S40, doesn’t support it, I even don’t have the menu key on my keyboard.
June 29th, 2006 at 10:15 am
That’s correct. It’s definitely part of S60 and I also think it is part of the S80 as on the 9300/95000 devices.

You can also use the application key to step through and select an app from the list, a short press will highlight the next app on the list, a long press will switch you to it.

Thanks Jim. I didn’t know this. Thank you for pointing this out!

how can i minimize certain apps? when i press the red button beside the mail button, the application will exit
July 12th, 2006 at 12:34 pm
There is no such thing as minimize, as all apps always run full-screen. You can switch between apps as described or press menu twice to switch to the the standby screen.

H Kaine,
There is a widset (read the posts about widsets) that will notify you when you get a Gmail. It is not very stable and not a perfect implementation but hey - it’s free.
August 20th, 2006 at 4:28 am

Hi … have been using E61 in India … miss FM radio on this device… any free download available? please let me know…Thanks

Joydeep, u will not ne able to install an FM radio app on ur E 61. However, do check out the Internet radio apps that are available for downloads. Check out the Shoutcast engine for the same. Any google search could get u that.
Further also check our radiomundu.com. Another internet radio app. The E61 is currently not supported, but will be soon.

Though one touch access establishes the connection through my laptop USB, while accessing websites I get an http 403 error saying you are not authorized to see this site.
Kindly help.

Hi Abdul, thats an interesting problem. First, trust u have activated ur GPRS with ur operator. Usually they send ur OTA settings which u could save on ur phone and ur phone works fine there on. Else, if u are using a Nokia E61 device, then do check out whats called the Settings Wizard. u can access this under menu … Tools … Settings wizard. Run the same and let the wizard setup ur phone for GPRS, MMS, etc. The wizard has a whole bunch of op. Settings it can call up for u. Trust this is of some help.

I have an e61 and a e61i. One of the nice shortcuts on the e61 is the ability to switch between the general and silent profiles by toggling the # key. That doesn’t seem to work on the e61i. I emailed Nokia about that and here is what the say:
Thank you for e-mailing the Nokia Care Contact Center.
We understand your inquiry into quickly switching between profiles on
your Nokia E61i phone.
Our records indicate that some features, such as toggling your
profiles with the # key, have been changed at the request of your
service provider, AT&T Wireless. Instead, you may press the power key to
bring up a list of profiles for your Nokia E61i phone, and then scroll
to and select the profile you wish to use.
We hope you find this information helpful.
If you have any additional questions, please contact us. To ensure
proper handling, please continue to use the current subject line.
Thank you for choosing Nokia for your mobile needs.

That has to be pure crap. AT&T doesn’t support the e61i and the phone is unbranded and unlocked. Even if it was locked why would a service provider care about changing profiles.
Here is my question: to the other e61i owners out there, does the # key toggle between profiles? How about the e61i owners on AT&T, does that shortcut work for you?
Any help would be appreciated!

Hi i am using Nokia E61i…i am getting an error called ‘exit open settings first’…but i am not able to find the open settings, can anyone help me. I am trying to setup Mail for Exchange in the phone

Just got my E61i. Nice unit! Does precisely what I want it to. To round it off, I was wondering whether there is any free/ open source “Expenses” management software for the E61i. Nokia suggests a software from Echoware (or something like that) which has a trial time of 14 days or so.

Hello. I have also have the problem with my E61i where when I push the # key, all I get is a bunch of ##### on the screen?
Any advice would be appreciated as it is the most useful shortcut for me!
November 15th, 2007 at 5:35 pm
Sorry, to clarify further I am pushing the # key to go to silent, but all that happens is a series of ############ appear.
Thanks in advance.

Bob,
Just make sure that
1. You are in standby mode. (I am not sure it works with other apps)
2. Press the # key once and keep it pressed without releasing it. If you press it once and release it, a series of # comes on the screen.
Hope this tips helps.
Ibrahim,
There is no way of making a TODO Repeat. At least for the Symbian version shipped with E61i. Only meetings can be repeated, or you may want to use the Anniversary feature for yearly events. I think this is a major handicap with Nokia phones. Worst, the repeat can be done only for a fixed period. For example, You cannot say repeat in every 3 months. Looks like S60 has a long way to go.
Hope these tips were useful.
TIP:
I realized that (contacts, messages etc) you could press shift and enter (or select) key to mark an item. This is very convenient if you want to move /delete multiple items in a list like contacts, todo, messages etc. I don’t remember reading this in the manual.

Hi, anyone else get repeated complete loss of signal strength with e70? I can be in an area where I typically get fantastic reception (eg my apartment) and then the signal will completely drop for ~1-2 minutes, then go back to full strength. During those couple minutes I can’t make or receive calls etc. Is this typical of GSM phones? Someone told me that maybe I have a european version of the e70, and it’s optimized for the GSM networks in Europe, not the US?
Any input appreciated!

Thanks for all those who have added comments on this site. J got lot of tips.
I am new Nokia E62 user and I need help in following areas:
1. Some shortcut key to switch between active applications. something like alt-tab on PC.
2. Configuration setting for automatic keypad locking after few minutes.
3. Some way to find out timestamp of ‘all’ missed calls from a particular number. currently if I get 3 miss calls from a number then the phone just displays timestamp of last call. I can’t find out if those missed calls were in last two minutes or in last one hour.
Thanks in advance.
Rakesh.

I just got the tip for switching application by pressing and holding the key next to joystick. Somehow I missed it earlier.
Thanks.
