Mail For Exchange For Nokia Nseries
I'm normally not discourage when I read that a certain software doesn't support the Eseries devices. If the application is for a S60 3rd edition device I go ahead and try it anyway. What's the worst that could happen - the application doesn't run?
One of the biggest takeaways from my visit to Nokia World was the plethora of the many great Nokia devices in addition to the Eseries. I really haven't spent time on non "E" devices but experiencing these devices at the event wetted my appetite for more. Thanks to a friend I got to use a Nokia N80 for a week. The first thing I did was to set up (corporate) email on the device.
I didn't think that I could run Mail For Exchange (ActiveSync) on the Nokia N80. The Eseries devices are the only supported devices according to the Mail For Exchange download site. As if that wasn't enough I also remember reading in the original Nokia - Microsoft press release that - "Enterprise Solutions business group today announced that it has licensed Microsoft Corp's Exchange Server ActiveSync protocol to enable wireless and direct synchronization between Microsoft Exchange Server, part of the Windows Server System and future Nokia enterprise mobile devices."
But low and behold - Mail For Exchange installed beautifully on the Nokia N80. Within minutes I had my corporate email, calendar and contacts syncing with my Nseries device!
In theory, most S60 3rd edition software should work on most S60 3rd edition devices. However, I just thought that for something as complicated as email and syncing, or even the fact of the licensing issue of ActiveSync, the usage would be restricted to Eseries devices. It is clear that Mail For Exchange wasn't targeted for the Nseries and that it is not an ideal solution in its current (not supported) format. For an example I couldn't get mail from Mail For Exchange to show up in Active Standby.
However, if you have a Nseries device and want to see if you can get your corporate email through Exchange 2003 SP2 on the server and Mail For Exchange on your device - give it it a try! I'm not sure if it works on other Nseries devices but it works on the Nokia N80. If you're not happy with the solution on your Nseries device you can always switch to an Eseries ![]()

Hello,
I installed the Exchange software on My N73 today and it works fine. The only thing missing is the preview on the display saying that mails are received.

Actually, my boss hs been using it on his N73 for some time and it has been working very well. The larger fonts for the inbox list text actually looks good.

Hi Purplejay,
Start with reading the posts on the blog about Mail For Exchange. There should be 3-4 posts. Send me a personal note if you have more questions.
Franco,
Mail for Exchange works great on the E61 (and the rest of the Eseries devices).

How was the party at Bob’s place? Only a half-hour? Not much of a party.

The party was *short* but *sweet*! Like all of Bob’s parties

Does anyone know when there will be a new version that supports essential features such as folder support, proper calendar integration and corporate contact lookup? My Windows Mobile touting buddies already boast such features and say that this is the main reason that we may go WM instead of S60 across the organisation. Do Nokia have the motivation to develop it any further given they have a solution that you can pay for?
January 15th, 2007 at 6:27 am
I agree Darren. I could get this into our organisation easily if the mail for exchange behaved as you suggested along with tasks (not using pc suite). imap folder support is useless on any setup but folder support in M4E would be awesome.
i hate the windows mobile operating system and fell for symbian within minutes of using it on my new e61.
come on nokia…. it wil onyl be good for business!

Ahmad,
The current version of MFE supports Nokia N80. There is no unique version for the Nokia N80.

So exchange sync works great except for the Security Policy our corporate IT pushed out. Now my phone locks every 15 minutes.
On the Windows Mobile platform there is a program “IBE KeepAlive” that works around this.
Is there a similar work around for Symbian?

Hi KK,
I think the 15 min period can’t be changed from an end user perspective on the current version. I haven’t heard of any 3rd party appication or hack. It’s the same for me - 15 minute time out. I guess the good thing is that it is “safe”
January 26th, 2007 at 1:22 pm
Hi! Did anyone try to install it on N70? I’m trying but unfortunately without success.
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
January 27th, 2007 at 1:48 pm
Hi Matija,
It only works on Symbian S60 3rd edition devices, I believe the N70 is S60 2nd edition.
January 28th, 2007 at 11:56 am
Admin, thank you. I guess I’ll have to find another solution for push email. Any suggestion?
January 29th, 2007 at 2:22 pm
who has
1) installed exchange server at home?
2) installed mailforexchange on the e61?
3) by-passed the ‘this site has got a non trusted certificate…’ stuff which will make the syncing more easy.
I already have downloaded and installed the .cer file from the microsoft certificate service, but the -non trusted certificate- announcing is still present. any suggestions?

works fine on my e61.

[...] I haven’t confirmed this yet but I have heard that this version no longer can be run on the Nseries devices. (As opposed to the previous versions of Mail For Exchange that worked on Nseries) [...]

what version of M4E have you been using that works on the N73 ?
I tried the 1.3.1 on a Softbank 705NK(JP) but it got system error when I tried to sync. Now I installed 1.5.0, get error message saying “Unsupported device…” . If possible, can I also have the link for the download page. Thanks a lot

where did you download the MFE software for N80?
February 21st, 2007 at 7:37 am
Willfa,
This post was written quite a while back. Things have changed (see the latest post about M4E). However, you can still find the previous version of M4E that worked with the Nseries.

The comment from Bore is gone, and I can confirm that the version (1.5) of m4e on the nokia site will not run on N80 anymore. Do someone have a link to the previus version of m4e? I will love to have this sw.

Hi Kristian and Willfa,
The previous version of Mail For Exchange is still available for download. Just read Alexander’s comment, which is still there, as of 2 seconds ago:

Hi guys, sorry to jump on your blog dedicated to the E series but does anyone know of a free or cheap way of synching to exchange servers on a Nokia N91? It has WI-FI but I dont see the point in this feature if I cant even get my work emails?

Hi,
Mail for exchange (version 1.50) doesn’t work on the Nokia N95. It installs successfuly but detect the device when you launch the app…
Too bad, I’ll try to see if I can remove the detection

Guy,
The latest version doesn’t work on any Nseries device. Try the earlier version.

Hi,
Managed to install ME 1.3.1 on a N80. No probs!!
If u wish to download 1.3.1 frm Nokia’s site, just change the url from 1.5 to 1.3.1 .. sweet
Seems they have downgraded
the sw with release 1.5 cos now it doesn’t install on N-series. Also installs fine on E-series but does not work with self-signed certificates any more which is a pity…
June 21st, 2007 at 6:13 am
Sweet! Changing the URL works! Trying the installation now.
