New Nokia E61 Firmware Available Through NSU
(Updated with change log below)
Thanks to everyone who wrote to tell me that the new firmware for the Nokia E61, V3.0633.09.04, is available through Nokia Software Updater. While the upgrade couldn’t have gone smoother for me, some people have reported some initial issues so before you upgrade take a second to think this through before you upgrade. Perhaps it’s better to wait a few days.

If you do decide to upgrade make sure you READ THE INSTRUCTIONS, BACK UP ALL YOUR INFORMATION and have plenty of time.
You don’t want to rush this.
Improvements/changes I’ve noticed so far:
- Overall *much faster* UI performance - best feature/improvement so far IMO
- Browser is *much* quicker
- Mail For Exchange works fine
- If you accidentally press the voice record button on the side the application launches but doesn’t start to automatically record like before~! Yay - no more accidentally recorded sound snippets
- Faster sending of SMS
- Changes to Internet Telephony Application
- NAT Support (needs to be fully confirmed)
- Better IMAP handling

I feel ya!
December 18th, 2006 at 11:24 am
Here is another soul doing this with little success: http://e61life.com/?p=175
December 18th, 2006 at 11:31 am
Woho, nice mate. Unfortunately I did not do as well
December 18th, 2006 at 11:32 am
Any chance the low volume/eq problems with the mp3 player have been fixed?
December 18th, 2006 at 11:36 am
Oh now, my update was a cakewalk. I hope it works out for you. I guess we’re taking a risk by updating so early….
December 18th, 2006 at 11:36 am
No blackberry client out yet on the site though, hmm.
December 18th, 2006 at 11:40 am
Haven’t tried it yet… Has anyone tried it on a Vodafone-branded E61?
Does anyone know where just the firmware file itself is available?
Thanks…
December 18th, 2006 at 11:44 am
Am waiting desperately to know the feature updates…Pretty please…Whats new???
Has the browser been updated? Sound ok now?
This is a bit like watching a live event
(posting from v2… Firmware… Cant wait to get back home and try)
December 18th, 2006 at 11:49 am
Anyone know where to find out what’s been updated in this new firmware?
December 18th, 2006 at 11:54 am
looks link mine died during flash
it just hangs on the nokia screen
December 18th, 2006 at 11:55 am
Ed, what are your first impressions?
December 18th, 2006 at 11:59 am
Nokia Service Layer Host Process crashed….
Yikes. This happened during the Flash.
December 18th, 2006 at 12:09 pm
Before rushing on this update, can someone post a list of the new and updated functions of this firmware ?
December 18th, 2006 at 12:09 pm
mine is dead, all it does it show the nokia screen and it beeps once. then if i let it sit it goes to screensaver but won’t boot or connect to the pc
December 18th, 2006 at 12:13 pm
Update…
Well, my phone isn’t corrupted. But I’m still @ Firmware 2.0618.06.05.
I’m not sure I have the stomach to fiddle with this anymore.
December 18th, 2006 at 12:14 pm
That’s scary!!!
December 18th, 2006 at 12:15 pm
Here are some first impressions for everyone. They are not quite “scientific”, but here goes-
1) The web browser is WICKED FAST! It seems to render pages so much quicker. I tried digg and Slashdot (although digg just got redesigned today)
2) RSS reader seems to “Refresh” pages quicker
3) The overall connection process (GPRS or WLAN) seems much faster. I am using Cingular…the little GPRS icon in the upper corner used to flash many times before the connection actually became active, but now it happens after 1 or 2 seconds.
I’ve had some gripes with the previous firmware with regards to Yamigo not working, the slow mail client, and a few other issues…I’m going to mess around with them now. Overall this seems like a pretty good update!
What else have you guys noticed with the new firmware?
December 18th, 2006 at 12:15 pm
you are lucky, if i plug in the charger when it is off it shows the charging indicator but it still won’t boot up, just makes an error beep and sits, i bet it is corrupted, and I know for sure I didn’t touch the cord when flashing, lol.
December 18th, 2006 at 12:16 pm
Does it solve the quiet call waiting beep problem?
December 18th, 2006 at 12:22 pm
I’m researching this crashing NSU error. There seems to be some uncertainty regarding why it crashes. Some people think it’s a firewall/antivirus issue, while others think it’s a buggy software issue, and there are some that think that there are some buggy R61s out there.
Will keep folks posted…
Eric- Thanks for the observations! A faster web browser would be great.
December 18th, 2006 at 12:22 pm
Downloading updates…
Hi from Russia))
December 18th, 2006 at 12:52 pm
If you are using Blackberry Connect. Wait until they release a version that supports this new firmware.
December 18th, 2006 at 12:54 pm
…well, Yamigo still doesn’t work. I also am having a really weird problem with the RSS reader: It started always using “MEdiaNet” as my default access point instead of asking me each time (what I prefer). I have tried everything, including changing the default access point in the web browser. Finally, I deleted the MEdiaNet access point from my connections, and re-added it. Now the feeds won’t even launch!!
The web rendering speed is definitely improved…besides that, nothing else strikes me as new or improved in this firmware.
Jeb- Haven’t experienced the call waiting bug you are talking about…maybe because I have no friends
Ryan- Hopefully you aren’t left with a brick/paperweight! Good luck!
December 18th, 2006 at 1:16 pm
Success…
NSU crashed again, but I got the 3.x firmware in somehow.
Here’s what I did:
1) Backed up everything
2) Removed my Memory Card
3) Did a hard reset *#7370#
4) Did the Nemesis Flash trick thingie (http://www.averageadmins.com/blog/2006/11/12/force-flashing-the-nokia-e61/)
5) Ran NSU….said new software available. It failed @ 80%.
6) I took an anti-acid for my stomach. Took a deep breath.
7) I started up my phone and the new Firmware was there
Observations:
It’s markedly faster in every task. dialing is faster. Web browsing is faster. Everything. More later…
December 18th, 2006 at 1:18 pm
Tried to update Nokia E61 RM-89 says no software available ??? South Africa
December 18th, 2006 at 1:28 pm
now it came up with a screen and said “system error” hmm
December 18th, 2006 at 1:42 pm
My firmware also failed!!
The same symptom as Greg “all it does it show the nokia screen and it beeps once.”
Solved the problem by holding the 3, send (green), and the * key down as I turn on the phone and waited for the phone to format.
http://discussions.europe.nokia.com/discussions/board/message?board.id=hardware&message.id=1282&query.id=9437#M1282
After that the phone restarted normal, then I did the firmware upgrade again and it worked this time.
I hope it helps
Joakim
December 18th, 2006 at 1:55 pm
Does this firmware work on the E62, or is there an update for it yet?
December 18th, 2006 at 1:57 pm
OH MY GOD! symbian-freak.com I LOVE YOU!!! My phone lives!!! and is running v3. I had to hold down green + * + 3 and power for a long time and it booted up.
December 18th, 2006 at 2:01 pm
updated without a problem
hopefully it does something helpful. m
maybe my E61 will be able to make me breakfast now?
December 18th, 2006 at 2:01 pm
Works fine here. Web browsing is indeed much faster. It seems that the entire wlan part is much faster.
Good luck updating your devices!
December 18th, 2006 at 2:13 pm
If ever you get stuck on step 2/3 “Searching for a connected phone”
Make sure you DO NOT have norton antivirus installed. This antivirus/firewall is known to cause problems with the updater and uninstalling Norton antivirus 2006 on my laptop did the trick !
Here we go v3 !
December 18th, 2006 at 2:32 pm
come on.. there must be a way for us Mac users… PLeaseeeeeee helllpppp
how do i update.. (-:
December 18th, 2006 at 2:35 pm
can someone else check that their sip phone is working after update. i can’t make any internet calls…
December 18th, 2006 at 2:36 pm
I have a MacBook and did the update with the latest version of Parallels. It worked flawlessly. Now if I could just get the Blackberry software to work…
December 18th, 2006 at 2:50 pm
There seem to be a problem with using Mail For Exchange.
Anyone can confirm ? Thanks.
December 18th, 2006 at 2:59 pm
just used updater and everything looks good. now time to try to restore it. didnt go so well have to reinstall programs from PC
December 18th, 2006 at 3:01 pm
I have no problems with Mail For Exchange.
December 18th, 2006 at 3:14 pm
This may sound like a stupid question, but what does back up do for you? I only imagine it backing up my contacts and maybe SMS. What does it back up?
December 18th, 2006 at 3:16 pm
Er… what about the STUN for VoIP? Had Nokia added it yet?
December 18th, 2006 at 3:19 pm
Being a Mac user I’ve also tried installing thorugh Parallels but I only get like 10% into the Updating Software bit then it sort of looses connection to the phone giving me an error message saying Updating Software failed
Removing power from my phone and I can start it as normal, so no data lost luckly. Any clue anyone?
December 18th, 2006 at 3:20 pm
So does BlackBerry Connect work or not with the new firmware? What are the problems reported?
Nona
December 18th, 2006 at 3:22 pm

December 18th, 2006 at 3:40 pm
Blackberry Connect software is not compatible with the latest firmware, so beware. I am hoping they post the new BB software soon.
December 18th, 2006 at 4:02 pm
Perfect update, Thank´s Bro! I goingo to try the new versión!
December 18th, 2006 at 4:02 pm
Anyone flashed a 3 phone? I hear you can change the product code for the phone, but I dunno… sounds like if it goes wrong you are stuck, or is it really just a matter of changing the code to say it’s a generic e61 handset?
If so, anyone done it with a 3 phone and lived?
December 18th, 2006 at 4:06 pm
I found out what was wrong. In Paralles I don’t have USb auto connect on, so I manually choose which devices to connect to the virtual machine. For some reason the device changes from E61 to BB5 ADL Loader about 10% into the process so in order to succeed you have to connect to BB5 ADL Loader.
December 18th, 2006 at 4:17 pm
Sorry to bother you again but right at the end you it switches back to being E61 again so you have to attach it as that again.
Pls. bear in mind that my experiences only refer to Mac users using Paralles to update the phone and only those who have turn off auto connect USB in Parallels
December 18th, 2006 at 4:24 pm
First bug notice:
1- Internet Telephony does not work anymore. I have the same settings as before but when I press the dial(green) button, nothing happens, the number stays printed on the screen. 5 minutes before the update, VOIP was working 100%. I also tried Options/Call/Internet Call, but it also fails.
Voip users, you will no longer be able to use this feature anymore. Too bad, this was the primary usage of my phone…
December 18th, 2006 at 4:29 pm
What VOIP are you using?
December 18th, 2006 at 4:35 pm
Do your SIP settings show that your VOIP accounts are registered? Do you see the VOIP icon on the screen?
December 18th, 2006 at 5:32 pm
I have PR3 on my phone and have been testing with VoIP (to local Call Manager) works well the WiFi improvements mean that battery last longer on internet calls etc. I haven’t tested SIP yet but I understand that it’s improved as well. No BB client / Exchange client is a pain but I will let you know when/ if I get hold of one.
Francis, You will need to delete and re add the VoIP settings as they are stored differently and don’t work between firmware versions
December 18th, 2006 at 5:38 pm
Have you seen a increase of a ram memory? before the update, i had 21 or 22 mb, now i have 24-25.
You can see a screentshot on my blog:
http://goponygo.com/blog/2006/12/18/e61-actualizando-la-firm-a-v306330904/
December 18th, 2006 at 5:59 pm
Does anybody know if it’s possible to update the firmware over the air? thx
December 18th, 2006 at 6:05 pm
I tried to update, and it freezes up on step 2 of 3 . just freezes up and stops. I got a windows “Nokia SOurce Layer Host process has encountered a problem and needs to shut down” anyone please help me would be nice.
December 18th, 2006 at 6:12 pm
To Timmy O2L:
I would not try to update the E62 with this firmware just because there’s enough differences in functionality between the E61 and E62 that you could do plenty of damage. In any case, I don’t think the NUS would let update it that way. And, there is no official firmware update for the E62 yet.
December 18th, 2006 at 6:50 pm
NSU says my E61 is already up to date. Mine is imported from Hong Kong. Currently running firmware 2.0618.06.05. Anyone else besides me and Errol getting this message? I suspect the Chinese localization of the firmware just hasn’t been released yet. Hopefully soon.
I love software updates, especially when they make things better.
December 18th, 2006 at 7:01 pm
yap, me too, like to see improvement. mine is Singapore version. anyone have try whether the Music player issue have fixed? i mean the “no bass” until you adjust the volume.
December 18th, 2006 at 7:06 pm
ok just checked mine, said got new update software…. ok do this later. go to fill my stomatch first.
December 18th, 2006 at 7:19 pm
Heres an obvious improvement, Battery Life! More juice baby! So far no problems at all, If I may add, this update was unnecesary! No critical improvement. VOIP (I use TruPhone) works A-OK! Speed was about the same, 2% more stable, and NO improvement on RAM! I hate Nokia, for making an excellent phone limited!
But it gives it a nice new phone feel!
December 18th, 2006 at 8:08 pm
The mail app, at least with imap, looks like it works a LOT better. Still not right - it flaked on me shortly after the update - but at least it works. It was nearly unusable before. Perhaps it’ll be a positive when they hit the 4.x firmware
December 18th, 2006 at 8:46 pm
Did it fix the blackberry issue so we can be able to turn of vibrate for incoming Blackberry email? Or does anyone know how to configure this setting?
December 18th, 2006 at 9:08 pm
just updated the firmware, run smooth to the end. mine is Singapore version with chinese input. work fine so far. tested the music player “no bass” issue have fixed. others don’t know.
btw, wanna ask after I upgraded did i need to install again the “SMS Accelerator”?
December 18th, 2006 at 9:17 pm
ok, here we go again. no way i’m gonna upgrade before getting my hands on the APAC FW… :p
but i bet none of you can imagine the jealousy i have when i hear about the faster browser.
December 18th, 2006 at 9:45 pm
mattw - What exactly does your “not compatible with the latest firmware” statement mean?
Regards,
Nona
December 18th, 2006 at 10:10 pm
Nona, it means that the Blackberry Connect application will not run on this new PR3 firmware. I made the mistake of updating to PR3 and now have no more Blackberry until they release a PR3 version of the BB Connect program. Guess i am stuck using Outlook WebMail for a while
Have noticed better WiFi performance (faster to connect) and web pages load faster. SIP for VoIP looks to be more stable.
December 18th, 2006 at 10:20 pm
Hi…
Updated my firmware to 3.0633.09.04… Worked perfectly… Phone is certainly much much faster… Go nokia firmware updates !!
December 18th, 2006 at 10:22 pm
Anyone have any idea about how Nokia decides the digits in the firmware number ? Ok ‘3′ for the third firmware upgrade, and thereafter… ?
Also, do we need to install the sms accelerator program ?
Painted my e61 white… Will post the pics later in the respective section…
take care all…
December 18th, 2006 at 10:44 pm
Hi everyone,
The max volume out of the Nokia earpiece is very soft when used with the older firmware. Has this issue been resolved?
Anyone has a list of bugs fixed or new features for the latest firmware?
Regards
December 18th, 2006 at 11:12 pm
Earlier today I was reading about the firmware update on here, and was all excited to get home from work so I could update my phone, until it was stolen right before I left work.
I love reading your blog and the great info, it helped me decide the e61 was the perfect phone for me.
Now I’ve got to get another e61 sometime before the new year, all these posts are making me miss it even more.
December 18th, 2006 at 11:37 pm
One more bug fix I noticed: after upgrading to firmware v2, I was getting errors when trying to change settings related to my lock code (i.e. autolock period and the lock code itself). These issues seem to be resolved in the v3.0633.09.04 firmware update.
Also, the Web Browser is noticeably faster… and unless my ears are deceiving me, the music player sounds better (im using the headset)
December 19th, 2006 at 12:25 am
Unfortunately what I thought was a smooth and event free update wasn’t. After updating I was asked for a memory card password which I never set. And since I backed up to my 2GB card I now don’t have access to all the settings and goodies I had on the card. I love this phone but all that information was too valuable to just format the card.
I tried to reinstall the upgrade and that didn’t help either. If anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.
December 19th, 2006 at 12:25 am
done without a hitch! thanks for the news:)
December 19th, 2006 at 12:39 am
Does anybody know if the native SIP client can finally select Access Groups in this new firmware version?
December 19th, 2006 at 12:58 am
Had the error message “update startup failed” Internal module error when first install the new firmware. Switch to orginial Nokia Theme and try again…Now it works fine.
the “loss bass” bug is fixed, browser is faster….
December 19th, 2006 at 1:34 am
And is it finally possible to copy text from browser or email? It is the biggest bug for me…
December 19th, 2006 at 1:36 am
Hi cpucooler,
What do you mean by the music player sounding better? Can you elaborate pls?
Regards.,
December 19th, 2006 at 1:42 am
Didn’t have any trouble intalling the upgrade. However, i noticed that the characters assigned to the “I”, “O”, and “P” keys are out of order. (example, if i press “function” + “I” the equal sign is displayed instead of the subtraction sign) Has anyone else experience this problem? What should i do?
December 19th, 2006 at 2:28 am
Updated last night on my fathers PC (he has Windoze) and it worked well!!!
Thanks for the news and regards from germany
December 19th, 2006 at 2:49 am
Hi
For all of you who have had problems flashing, here is the fix that will work in 90% of the cases
Turn off the phone
Press the green, * and 3 buttons at the same time while pressing the power button
Release the buttons when you see the country entry box
This procedure clears previous user settings which arent compatible with the new firmware
T
December 19th, 2006 at 3:02 am
The update went well overall! I noticed that problems arose from the flimsy USB cable at the E61’s end…. (one slightest touch and it would disconnect).. So I just left it there for 10 minutes till the firmware update was complete… Restoring from the memory card was flawless with 2 applications that didnt restore (no matter). I love this update, it presents faster browsing experience as well as overall improvement on performance, excellent!
December 19th, 2006 at 3:31 am
The new BlackBerry Connect is out ! You just have to download it on nokia for business
December 19th, 2006 at 3:52 am
Damn, V2 was just released in AUS, i want this one
December 19th, 2006 at 3:56 am
The new blackberry client has been posted on the businesssoftware section of Nokia’s website!
December 19th, 2006 at 4:21 am
Hi Errol,
I’m also in South Africa, NSU also does not give me the option to upgrade to a newer software version. Any clues why we don’t have the option to upgrade?
December 19th, 2006 at 4:21 am
Tried doing update from v1 firmware, upgrade got me to:
2.0618.06.05
14-07-06
RM-89
Tried updating again and told I have latest software.
I’m located in Guernsey, UK
December 19th, 2006 at 5:08 am
Hi,
Does anybody know if this newest firmware is available yet for Australia? I tried an update via NSU but also crashed on 80%, oddly enough when I restarted the phone it upgraded from firmware 1 to 2!
Cheers,
Jon
December 19th, 2006 at 5:20 am
Have they fixed the LED, so it can flash when you recieve SMS/MMS/missed calls??? That would be a great feature…
December 19th, 2006 at 5:21 am
I successfully upgraded my 3 E61 using the process described here - http://www.averageadmins.com/blog/2006/11/12/force-flashing-the-nokia-e61/
I tried a generic UK product code first and only got v2.0x. I needed the product code 0524755 to get the latest version. The only problem I’ve found so far is that / and ? are switched round
December 19th, 2006 at 5:25 am
Plase, can some of the successful upgraders post the code of their phones?. Trying NSU on my phone with code “0538289″ says that there is not any new update.
Thanks.
December 19th, 2006 at 5:37 am
Hi everyone,
Thanks for much for the valuable feedback.
Can I check if the “numbers” shortcut has been fixed? i.e. whenever you press the “menu” button and then a number shortcut, do you still need to press the blue button on the lower left corner of the keyboard?
Cheers,
Andrew
December 19th, 2006 at 5:43 am
I have a Vodafone branded E61 on version 1
the updater still says no updates. Anyone know how to force an update. I have tried resetting the device to defaults and still no joy.
Any help would be appreciated!
December 19th, 2006 at 5:50 am
Guys…I have the E61 for about 6 month. still have the very old firmware. where can I find exactly how to update my firmware step by step? and what happen to all my software that I have now in my phone?
Kindly help…
Happy holiday to all.
December 19th, 2006 at 5:57 am
Upgrade went fine, did you notice that you have now 7 icons on Main screen possible instaed of six !
December 19th, 2006 at 6:11 am
Finally, the music player issue (equalizer settings loss, bass missing) has been fixed. E61 can finally be used as a portable MP3 device. Enjoy !
Still no go with Voip….need to reconfigure the whole settings as mentionned by Trevor.
December 19th, 2006 at 6:14 am
I have a 3 phone (Australia). Tried updating using Nokia Software Update - no version three yet, but it did install version 2.0618.06.10, which failed at 80% but then turned the phone on after removing the battery and it came out of Test mode fine. The only problem was that it wouldn’t connect to 3G. I spoke to three customer care who couldn’t help and wanted me to take the phone in for a replacement. In the end I figured it out: the firmware default network setting was GMS not Dual mode, then once you restore from the memory card this setting disappears and you cannot change it. So, I switched to dual mode before the restore from the memory card and everything worked. Hopefully v3 will be out soon here and hopefully it won’t eat 4 hours of my life when I install it!
December 19th, 2006 at 6:30 am
I tried to update but nothing. Says that can not update, ask supplier. Help !!!!!
December 19th, 2006 at 6:44 am
Hi,
has already updated a T-Mobile branded E61?
The Updater tells me, there is no Update for my E61 …

I’ve just received my E61 (YAY!) and I’m trying to upgrade - I’ve currently got Firmware version 2.0618.06.05 but NSU tells me that this is the latest version?
Is this update available in the UK - can anyone confirm?
Is there any way I can “manually” update?

Hey Guys,
Where is the Blackberry upgrade on Nokia’s site. Anybody have a link?
December 19th, 2006 at 8:23 am
SirB, read posts above, uninstall any antivirus/firewall software.
December 19th, 2006 at 8:24 am
Can someone confirm if this firmware is only for EMEA? I’ve got an APAC version of the E61…Hong Kong to be precise.
December 19th, 2006 at 8:25 am
Although I do not have the problem of a branded phone, eventhough i’ve got the phone with a t-mobile plan. It was to new for t-mobile to have a personalized version I guess..sometimes it pays to be one of the first customers!!! But I believe for al those people who complain about not being able to up-date their firmware, these people can help you: http://www.averageadmins.com/blog/2006/11/12/force-flashing-the-nokia-e61/
I do not know if it legal in your respective countries but the choice is for you to decide to risk it if it is not!
December 19th, 2006 at 9:02 am
I am running an APAC version and it updated.
December 19th, 2006 at 9:21 am
Wow, the E-Series GUI are all very slow, relative to msmobiles. So I’m estatic if this increases the GUI. I thought the slowness was coz of the minisd card I bought. Can someone confirm to me that minisds doesn’t have variable speeds like SD Cards. My old SD was an 80x my minisd now just say “High Speed”. I know microSD’s are the fastest and doesn’t have different speeds.
I also got an E70. Has someone noticed the trends on which the firmwares come out, if there are any.
Thanks
December 19th, 2006 at 9:25 am
Actually I’ll just plug it in and see.
Another question. Playing games like 9 hole golf is very slow on the E70 and I can’t get it to run on the E61. But on a N80 it plays like it’s meant to. Well faster does this firmware addresses those issues as well ? Or is the N80 has an overal faster system (cpu, mem). I thought most are @200Mhz.
Thanks again.

I just ran the installer and after 3 months of “no updates available” from v1, it finally recognized the phone and ran the updater. Unfortunately it crashed every time at about the 80% mark (with “Test Mode” on the phone screen). Because of the hard crash, I was forced to unplug the phone and reboot it and the PC, but it appears to work fine.
Unfortunately it only updated the firmware to v2, so I guess my phone is at the end of the list of upgraders!
December 19th, 2006 at 9:55 am
Hey guys,
I just tried to download the firmware and it seems that my cable loosened ( I have that problem) during the installation phase.
My phone has completely died on me. Luckily i have backed up everything.
Can anyone lend a helping hand on how to reboot my E61?
Thanks

1. Full backup
2. Upgrade went smooth (I have APAC version of E61).
3. Full restore
4. New Blackberry client installed and works fine.

Ok guys, like Jisber, if your even that lazy to read only a few comments above your own, I doubt you will even find this comment with a tip:
READ THE ABOVE!!
If the solution isn’t in there, you’ll probably have to go to a nokia service point!
Good luck anyway!

I just saw this new 3.x load posted and decided to give it a shot. My biggest complaint of this e61 was it NEVER re-aquired a GPRS lock after a short fade. It killed any chance of push email to work while moving through a bad signal area and the only way to get GPRS (packet) back was to do a power cycle. The updater worked fine for me and I was on the new load when it powered up. I don’t see any real changes to anything else so far but the GPRS receiver lock is FIXED ! I tried it in dual band mode and just GSM and it re-aquires the GPRS signal either way. It is faster for me to set it to GSM only instead of it searching for a UMTS signal it will never find. I sat it in a dead zone of my house several times and it always comes back with a GPRS lock when the RF improves. THANK YOU !
guy

Maarten,
I wouldn’t say “lazy”. There is no solution posted for my problem.
My phone does not TURN ON!!
It has completely crashed. I am located in Canada and there are no Nokia Care points that service the E61 since it is not sold here.
Any recommendations? How can I reboot it?
December 19th, 2006 at 11:45 am
I tried doing the upgrade myself several times but I get the following symptoms:
- Phone software is already up-to-date…you can reinstall it if you wish, so I try it
- It updates till about 80% then resets the phone to Test Mode, where it gets stuck. Sometimes Nokia Service Layer Host Process crashes at this point.
I’ve updated the NSU and PC Suite software versions to the latest.
After reading through all of the comments (very helpful, thanks), it seems the 3.0633.09.04 update isn’t available for product versions with Chinese localization purchased in Hong Kong…yet.
I hope it comes out soon!

I am also in canada and my keyboard’s backlight stopped working for no reason. I plan on sending my E61 to Nokia support in Canada and hope they will repair it as if it was an E62. I found the reparation form on nokia’s canadian website. There is no information on their website about what device is supported. As far as I remember, E61 has a 3 years warranty from Nokia.
If it isn’t booting at all (you removed the battery and replaced it) then I see no solution but sending back the E61. Else, you can try iUnlock.com, they offer reflashing your device even it it’s dead (+$5.00)…
Good luck, i would be interested to know how it goes if you send it to Nokia Canada
Thanks !
December 19th, 2006 at 12:12 pm
Well it was not only directed at your comment, I see a lot of comments come by when a possible answer was already posted above.
If your E61 doesn’t power up after you’ve tried the following:
press these keys and hold them until it starts formatting ‘green button’ ‘3′ ‘*’
If you have already tried this, than by comment towards you was not correct and i apologize for it.
Good luck!
December 19th, 2006 at 12:14 pm
UPDATE to mypost above concerning the GPRS issue. While it does work slightly better to re-aquire.. I found that if I try to access a web site or check emails (packet data/GPRS needed) while it has no signal, the GPRS/UMTS scanning indicators go away and leaves it that way. It does not re-aquire the UMTS/GPRS signal or even try scanning for them again. Only a power cycle works. I’ve tried changing it to GSM only and the “when needed, when available” setting to no avail. All my other phones with this same sim work perfect in the exact same spot. Time to dump this sucker, I’m tired of waiting and messing with it.
December 19th, 2006 at 12:36 pm
Guy,
Where do you live and who is your provider, even with the first firmware I did not have this problem. It always re-aquired the signal, I hope it still does with v3.
Good luck with it!

Mine’s from Hong Kong…and the updater ran to 80% and then crashed. But I got the 3.X firmware installed.
This is an interesting issue though. I’m going to track it. Where did you get this information?

Hi!
Some notice from my upgrade.
No problems installing new firmware but some small problems getting my programs working again.
- Mail4Exchange did not work. The problem was that the password did not come with my backup. Re-typed the password and it works perfect.
- SIP. With my old firmware the phone did drop the synk to my SIP provider, means that I could always make a SIP call but was usually anvailable to get incomming calls. After the upgrade it did not work at all.
I delited the old profile and made a new one and it works like a charm. Have not lost the synk yet since my upgrade (about 4 hours).
- Musicplayer. Since I am an amateur musician I listen a lot to music and was disapointed when I last upgraded and lost the bass function. Now it is fixed and YES, YES, YES
I can hear the bass all the time without adjusting the volume.
As many have mentioned above the ugrade was an improvment and as I see it specially on SIP. Now you are able to use the phone to what it was ment to.
Reserve 1 and a half hours (at least) and upgrade yourself with lot of patient and then HIT THE UPGRADE buttom.
There might be a bug in the log of missing calls. It has happened several times for me that missed calls has not been registered even if I have been able to see the A number (the callers number) of the incoming call.
December 19th, 2006 at 12:53 pm
I can confirm it’s now able to have a sip call with a NAT. I have been able to register and having a call. The provider used is MCLink (an italian ISP). I don’t know if it’s required but I configured on the router a port redirection to the following UDP ports: 3478, 8000, 8001, 7651, 7666, 5060.
December 19th, 2006 at 1:09 pm
Has WiFi connection been fixed? With FW 2.xxxxxxxx, it cannot connect to Ad-hoc connections and phone resets when you disconnect?
My phone is either from China or HK with Chinese characters.
Did anyone have any luck with this new firmwar update yet?
Phone is laggy after you use it for a while I noticed. Esp when you first turn it on and hit the MENU button of any other folder. Has this problem been rectified?
Cheers

Has anyone noticed OVER HEATING? Mine started heating up like an owen after the firmware update. I begin to get worried..
Also I have problems with SIP. I used to have ‘default’ and ’sipgate’ under CONNECTION/Intert Telp.,I simply used to register. Now I can only see the avaible wireless from there. When I connect SIP works. But the problem is on sipgate.co.uk, I cant see my telephone online as it used to.

I use CellularOne in SW Pa. It works fine till it sits in a no RF spot for about 5 minutes. The noGPRS flag turns to a straight ant symbol and won’t come back tilll it power cycles. Might just be my phone but I’m not trying my luck by buying another one. I am testing hw6515 and HTC tytn/JASJAM now and they actually work ALL the time.

Hi CK,
I dont know if I can actually confirm that they’ve made any changes to the music player quality - It might just be that I was excited about having my firmware upgrade actually work and there being some sort of placebo effect associated with that. I guess I can’t really say that it sounds better unless I had two e61’s side by side. Does anyone else think their e61 plays music better with the upgrade?

An upgrade went well.
VOIP was the first thing that I tested.
I had to remove old profile (restored from memory card),
then create a new one to be able to make a call.
However, SIP settings still doesn’t have an entry
for STUN server. I’m using pbxes.org so there’s no
problem. However, I created a new profile connecting
directly to my VOIP provider (AxVoice) and it “Registration Failed”
showed up as usual.
Anyone actually got SIP working through NAT w/o port forwarding?
December 19th, 2006 at 3:47 pm
Another Australian here whose updater froze around 75% through the install process upgrading from 1.x to 2.x, but whose phone worked fine after pulling the battery out and put it back in. (There were a few minutes of anxiety there)…
However, no sign of the 3.x firmware this morning when I tried to update to the new one. Looks like it took a couple of weeks for Nokia to make the Australian updater recognise 2.x after europe, so I guess we may need to wait till the new year before we get 3.x - not so bad anyway I suppose as it’ll let the rest of you be our beta testers and make sure we won’t be getting any major faults.
December 19th, 2006 at 3:47 pm
There is one MAJOR update from the global voip settings. If you reach “Installations” from the menu, you will see “Internet tel.”.
This allows you to manage voip connections and bind wlan networks to profiles.
This “manager” is not intuitive and I still haven’t figured out it’s exact use but I think it is a step toward connecting voip profiles to any available wlan (hopefully in the end making the voip client aggressive and connect to ANY open wlan).
December 19th, 2006 at 3:47 pm
I installed the update, and installed all my apps. (I didn’t do a restore). This update is GREAT!
My phone is noticeably faster. Even navigated through apps, bringing up the messaging app, EVERYTHING. It is just a lot more responsive. I didn’t really have an issue with the speed before but now I can’t imagine things without this update. All the other things people mentioned as far as noticed fixes all hold true for me as well.
I am sorry to hear other folks have had issues, but I am grooving right along.
December 19th, 2006 at 3:52 pm
Well, after a day of using it, it seems that imap functionality is a lot better, but the app will still hang. Killing it and restarting fixes that, too. I’d say that the device is now at least useable for email, and a lot nicer in general.

Yup me too. I’ve gained 2 MB to 24MB free. And they’ve appeared to plug the memory leaks on the web browser, although I’m going to need to test this more.
Now…if we can only get our hands on Feature Pack 1!!

Got an issue tho’. Got problem installing themes. It gives out a notice saying the it’s unable to install. Anybody got this problem? If not, then I’ll try to flash my E61 again.
Thanks.

Thanks.
December 19th, 2006 at 5:22 pm
I know it’s not available for E62 yet, but do you expect to see a firmware upgrade for it in the next couple days?
December 19th, 2006 at 5:40 pm
Hi Pat,
I don’t think anyone knows. Carrier firmware normally lags because of the increased complexity. I’ve got a Nokia E62 as well so I will keep an eye open for any E62 firmwares.
December 19th, 2006 at 5:46 pm
Hello all,
Got my E61 upgraded to the latest firmware successfully. Feel sorry for the rest who can’t. All the best, ok!
December 19th, 2006 at 6:11 pm
Hi all having read the post it appears that the Australian version is only updating to V2 not V3 is this correct. Also I have NSU v1.2.20en what version do I need to get v3. Or is it something in the firware that determines the country and patches it. Help appreciated since I plan to wait for v3 before doing this update. Merry christmas all
December 19th, 2006 at 6:19 pm
Pat,
This is in the latest Blackberry Connect Release notes:
S60PR3_BlackBerry(6.44.3)_1. sisx:
E61 RM-89 device using SW version 3.0633.09.04
E62_BlackBerry(6.44.3)_2. sisx:
E62 RM-88 device using SW version 3.0633.09.04
If your E62 is at 3.0633.09.04 then you have the latest. If not, it must be coming soon.
December 19th, 2006 at 6:53 pm
Here is me wishing they release an updcate for the E62 aswell, it is getting a bit tedious to wait so much to access basic functions like incoming SMS…
Otherwise I love my phone

December 19th, 2006 at 7:18 pm
Worked perfectly for me on a Singapore E61.
Still, the biggest bitch I have about the phone is the bad integration with goodlink, the address book and calendar has to be sync’d via the computer, and can’t be done OTA like on a Treo.
Other than that, i’m happy with the phone.
December 19th, 2006 at 7:35 pm
Updated via a Windows PC. No issues. WorldMate (stock install) works for me. Hold down the blue key while pressing the numbers.
Nona
December 19th, 2006 at 7:50 pm
I take back my last comment about the address book, that appears to be fixed, which only leaves 2 things for me that suck.
The calendar doesnt show up in the today screen (which I used to be able to work around by syncing with the PC).. Guess what? Can’t do that anymore
The second is still the lack of decent integration with Goodlink, the email alerts and things don’t work, but I think that might be a problem on the good side, rather than the Nokia side.
Luckily for me, i’m not that fussed about the Calendar problems, but the address book was a big one.
