There are probably few Skype users, or not, who hasn’t noticed all the coverage Hutchinson’s 3 group has been getting in regards to their 3 X-Series with unlimited Skype on the Nokia N73 and other devices. Since the Nokia N73 is a S60 3rd edition there is a good chance that this service will also run on other devices on the same network - and it does. Here are the pictures of Skype running on Nokia E61.
I received these images from Derick who is a 3 customer. He installed the application and got Skype running on his Nokia E61 and Nokia N73.
As often when you use an application not intended for the E61 there are some anomalies. Some of the screen rendering doesn’t match the resolution but after the installation it seems to work OK.
Skype on 3 seems to be a mix of IP and VoIP. When a user hit dial to a Skype contact it makes a local call which obviously gets converted at some kind of gateway. Return calls seem to do something similar.
For those of us who are not with 3 and still yearning for Skype there is always SoonR.
A BIG thank you to Derick!

Guys check this out the new Nokia E65!!!

Hi Guys,
Just a note for those of you on 3. The iSkoot application works well on xSeries.
Pros
Gives you access to your SkypeOut contacts which the 3 branded app doesnt.
SkypeIn (to a Skype phone number) will work on iSkoot.
Cons
iSkoot for incoming calls will deplete your SkypeOut credit which the 3 app doesnt.
Outbound iSkoot calls do not give you the free 5000 minutes available on the 3 app.
I’m not sure how much data the app will use for maintaining presence information, but I can’t imagine it will be much.
My summary. Use the 3 app for calls to Skype computer users and incoming Skype calls (unless you need to accept calls to your SkypeIn number). Use iSkoot to get cheap international calls via your SkypeOut credit.
Derick
it is nice program
Hi Derick,
Did you run into any issues in calling out with iSkoot?
My outbound calling is plagued by the “couldn’t place your call problem”. I can only reliably call out after turning the phone off then on again, and then I can only make 1 call successfully.
/Quist
iSkoot works well on the E61 for calls - no support for chat yet though
Thanks to Derick for the X-series files. Just to inform you all …
I’ve installed it on my UK 3 network E61 (1.0610.04.04 RM-89 19/04/06) and it runs smoothly. setup user/pass and got all my contact list. First thing I noticed is that it is impossible to make Skype chat !!!
When tried to make a Skype call I received 3 message that the service is currently disabled for me. I condacted 3 and asked them to enable it (used the regular N73 excuse
and for 5 Pounds a month they enabled it.
Now I can receive Skype calls (by the way, there is no Skype caller identification so you could not really decide whether you like to answer this call or not), but, when I try to initiate a call it keep saying that this service is not activated. Called 3 again and it they say they are aware of the problem on their side. I’ll see tomorrow if it works.
Good luck to you all with Skype on E61 …
I am living in the Netherlands and still hoping to use skype on my mobile phone. Many hours I spend on surfing to all kind of websites about how to use skype on my mobile. As far as i know there still aint any application for running standalone on your mobile, but today i found this one: EQO. Perhaps some more people would like to try this. I am installing it right now and tonight I will test in on my pc and nokia e61.

Hi, Hocki! Can you tell us about your SIP to Skype GW approach? Is it your own-build GW, or one of commercial products (PSGw… etc.)? I planing to install some GW to route calls from my Asterisk server to Skype contacts. What’s your suggestion? (Sorry for my English)
Hello Kyiver!
Since I am interested in technique this was just one of the experiments I have done during the years. I can not say I needed this so I did not do any rapport about what worked well and what did not work. I remeber I tryed out some of the products on the market, and one of them was PSGw http://www.rsdevs.com/psgw.shtml. I think I used SJ phone http://www.sjlabs.com/sjp.html and also X-lite http://www.xten.com/index.php?menu=download as SIP software.
My own-buildings gave me satisfaction but that was the main thing with this project.
If you really need it so go and purchase a commercial product unless you do not work with things like this.
Good luck and by the way, No problem at all with your english.
Thanks you for your advice, Hocki! I think it’s really interesting to make SIP and Skype compatible with each other. But I disappointed that PSGw currently allows only one call session, and there isn’t possibility to route calls from skype to sip.
Anyway, you’re lucky that mobile providers in your country can offer you such a good bandwidth, so you can use Skype while on the rode! Here, in Ukraine, it’s hardly possible only at night! Most of our providers offer their service in GSM, and even with EDGE voip isn’t sound good enough. WCDMA is just going to start, so I’m waiting for it!
By the way, it’s better to say just for sure…, I’m about English
Hello All
Mark
I was doing the usual search for VOIP apps and Nokia E-series and came accross this website. I have no connection to this website and cannot vouch for anything they claim, but present it here for your interest:

Waiting in anticipation for Skype
Hei Quist, you were lucky to get any iSkoot calls working on Skypeout.. my E61 connects to Echo ok, but all attempts to call local landlines tell me to “try again later”, and in a rather unpleasant voice
Hi - tried to instal Gizmo on my E70 as described by Rolf (www.gizmovoip.com). But when I get to Step 3 about configuring settings using “Internet tel” I can get it to work. Apparently I should be guided thru the prompts but I can’t find these ‘prompts’. I guess this is because the instructions are written for the N80 which is different to the E70? Has anyone tried Gizmo on E-series?
Ignore last post - I went to the Gizmo Forums. Apparently the E70 wont work until Nokia upgrades the firmware.
I’ve now had iSkoot sitting on my phone as an emergency back-up should I be forced to make 1 all-important call abroad while out-and-about away from SIP/wifi (and being prepared to restart the phone to do so), but chuck that!
Fring just came out with a “preview” version for s60 v3 which works in all critical aspects with Skype (and apparently GoogleTalk). Plus it does so over the 3G network, not requiring wifi or calling a local access number (iSkoot uses a combined solution for better call quality - you make a local call at your regular local rates and iSkoot binds that call to whatever Skype ID or SkypeOut number you’re calling).
Fring does it all over the datapacket connection (or if you so choose over wifi - this can be good if you want better sound quality). You can also receive Skype calls on the same line. This thing is the bomb!
Mind you, there are some kinks that need working on, and these are the ones I’ve noticed so far:
* no vibrating alerts
* my Skype call forwarding seems to be on the fritz after using it
* battery drain - as per my posts on MfE always on push-mail, this drains your battery as well if you have it always on
* when installing, it’ll say it’s not meant for your phone, but you can install it anyway
* no Skype credit info
I am so pleased with this app that I can’t wait to test it more. With fring’s solution and a decent data plan, making international calls while away from your wifi can be as cheap as Skype or GoogleTalk allows. While iSkoot looks pretty, fring works. A major plus with fring is that you can receive Skype calls on your cell while away from wifi (provided you have 3G) without charging your Skype account a cell phone rate (as iSkoot does).
I’m going to be testing it more this weekend and keep you posted.
For those that are interested, I encourage you to try fring and make up your own mind.
The main advantage of fring is that you can make Internet calls without being tied to wifi or even paying for a local call to a national access number like with iSkoot, and you can receive Internet calls without a wifi connection, including SkypeIn calls to your cell without paying the SkypeOut to cell charge like with iSkoot.
The main disadvantage of fring is the delay and sound quality of the service. Testing it today reminded me of what it was like making trans-Atlantic calls 15 years ago. Almost walkie-talkie-like quality because if you both talk at the same time it gets all garbled. And if you’re not used to a delay (like most of us no longer are), talking while the other person starts to say something can happen a lot. With fring you can use the Access Point Groups in the E61, but I found the quality with wifi to actually even be worse than with 3G (delay is still present, and noise from line-of-sight interference to the router is on the extreme side).
Still, for me it’s great - especially given the fact that I and others have complained to iSkoot about the install and initial run problems with the E61 in other languages, and the inability to get past the “couldn’t connect your call at this time, try again later” barrier, but we have yet to see an update past the 1.0.6 release. They admittedly have major Skype-mobile roll-outs coming up with 3 worldwide (Feb. 1 here in Sweden), so I imagine their focus has not been on their own iSkoot app.
Until iSkoot gets their act together, I’ll be going with fring. Who knows, maybe fring will make enough progress on the delay and quality problems in the mean time.
I am a truphone user and I have been very impressed by the quality– call quality and customer service. I havent even paid them anything yet, and I’ve been making calls to US (mobile and landlines) and Korea (landlines) for three months now. (I am in Korea. Calls to US, canada, UK, etc. are free until March 2007)
Skype still interests me because of chat and SMS, but I can live without Skype, as can anyone who is familiar with the services of truphone. Besides, Skype has recently added connection fees to their program making them more dispensable.
I have used Skype_1_1_0_signed on a Nokia N73, the application was installed succesfully. I open the application, and the only 2 options I have, are “Continue” and “Exit”. When I click on “Continue”, the application closes.
Can anyone help me, please!!!
Thank you!!!
Hi
you can get software from Fring that works on E61 E70 using skype, at no cost with WIFI, works beautiful very easy to download. !!!!
I’ve been using Truphone (WLAN) for a week now, quality is very good. Service is ok for me, but, ………..I use WiFi , am I the only one that would like to have a better signal/reception, on same places where notebooks work ok my phone doesn’t. Would like to know about others experience.
Truphone, Gizmo, Sipgate and the plethora of other SIP providers give you the absolute best rates, generally with excellent quality, but you’re still tied to your wifi or at the mercy of hotspot charges. I love Gizmo, but will be using Truphone until their free-call offer runs out (although I have a Gizmo call-in number too).
The advantage of 3-Skype, iSkoot and fring is that you are unteathered from the wifi. I want to be able to make relatively inexpensive international calls from my cell anywhere. I also want people calling me abroad to be able to pay local rates without myself paying through the nose.
Just a little update as to iSkoot and fring for those following this thread.
I’ve been very impressed with fring, particularly since they updated to a new build of version 9 (2.74). I have yet to retest the call quality over 3G on a trans-atlantic call, but I don’t expect it to be much better. Calls on wifi with fring are still worse than those on 3G (but that may be due to my wifi). On the upside, battery drain was less than what I expected.
In other news, iSkoot appears to have fixed the one call problem I was having in Sweden (apparently a back-end bug), but then again they must have enhanced their server pool for my area since the 3-Skype app went live here on Feb. 1.
Interestingly, I tried running iSkoot and fring on my phone simultaneously. The call outs from both worked and you could definitely notice the better quality of iSkoot (but then again you pay for it, in part with a local call charge paid to your carrier). When calling my SkypeIn number, the fring app rang once or twice and then the call was forwarded to my cell by iSkoot even though I had iSkoot set to not forward the calls (SkypeOut charges to Swedish cells are outrageous, even worse than what I pay from a regular phone, let alone thinking about Voip rates).
In this regard, fring is working as they say it should. It lets “real” (non-SW based) calls through ahead of fring calls in a conflict. ISkoot, however, is not working in that sense, meaning if I had it on all the time, incoming calls could potentially deplete my Skype credit in no time.
So here I sit - When at home I use Truphone to call abroad and use Gizmo to receive call-in calls, when out-and-about I use iSkoot to call abroad and use fring to receive call-in calls.
Hi!
I have been trying to get Fring to work om my E61 but have had big problems until I installed version 2.74 (release date jan 29), then it started to work. The soundquality to Skype and GoogleTalk is not best I have heard but OK. Chat also works. Yet I have only used wi-fi connection.
Worth a try if you are not to afraid to mess upp your phone.

How have you managed to get Skype working on an E61 on the UK ‘3′ network??
I have loaded the software and registered a username but when i try to make a call i get a recorded message stating I have this function blocked.
I have 30Mb free internet access for life on my account … Customer Services state there is an E61 block on Skype and other stuff on the 3 ‘Today’ pages and that Skype is N73 only - no exceptions.
Here full work Skype for Nokia E61 - http://fring.com enjoy!
According to 3 I now have a N73 …. I DO have fully functioning Skype
Tried Fring … worked ok, but not happy about using the E61 loudspeaker. Way too quiet to hear comfortably.
Fring works fine on Nokia E70 (even from China!). It took 3 sms from Fring before the sms included my user details, but once over this, it works without problems. Thanks for the suggestion…
How can I get my skype contacts uploaded on my E70 ?
Skype for free??
I have a Nokia N73 on the THREE network. I have not yet signed up for the x-series, so if I try to make a skype call, it tells me I do not have access and that I need to call 333 to activate the add-on. However, if a contact calls me I can receive their call! Am I being charged for this (three customer services said “maybe”!)? Or have I found a way of using skype without paying £5 per month?
Guys why are you all trying to use SKYPE??
Use http://www.fring.com
I will not make a big song and dance. IT works and it is free to install without having to have a pc or money with skype. Yes skpye works with fring as well as Google talk. I have an e61. Initially upon installation it said it would not but I carried on anyway. And my my my I have used all features voice calls and chat succesfully. Stop worrying about what skype will be doing for your E61 when Fring has already done it with full access to skype.
There you go I have made the decision for you.
hello..does anyone know WHY FRING calls are not working on E62. you can chat using fring on E62 but not call

I’ve had a look around for Skype and other Voip S60 software after recently getting hold of an E61 on 3 in the UK and have discovered the following:
–
Derick Says:
January 2nd, 2007 at 3:50 am
OK, Just because you guys asked.
The download link is: http://www.sendspace.com/file/vl1esd
–
This link is good, the contents of the zip are:
Mobilcast.jar
3MobileMail_S60v3Client-5128-ACS.sisx
MSN_Messenger.jar
Skype_1_1_0_signed.sisx
ygo_h3g_N71_N73_N80_3250_nokiaSigned.sisx
I have only tried Skype_1_1_0_signed.sisx and it installs on my E61 fine and runs.
However, this is not really a proper Skype application, just one I assume comes with the
new 3 X-Series silver and gold bundles, which are essentially phones which run on S60 so this software will run on any S60 symbian phones. The 3 bundles can be found here:
http://www.three.co.uk/xseries/get_x_series/index.omp
The application however does not function as Skype should, and has clearly only been made to allow 3 in the UK to advertise these new packages as coming with free Skype. When you dial a contact, either in your phone book or in your Skype contact list, the application dials the following number:
+447838333888
This I assume is a gateway which checks you have Skype allowed for your phone, then routes the call, allowing 3 to provide this service, and monitor it’s use, for free. It is not a proper Skype application, I cannot text chat to my contacts (although I can see them online), there is no video chat, no Voip. I think the reason 3 have done this is because if it used your internet connection (either WiFi, 3G or GPRS) then 3 would not be able to monitor and limit the service as they wish, and as they currently charge by the MB, it would make people realize that services which 3 charge for actually cost next to nothing. So by using a dial up number, they can make it look like an internet application is running, while in fact it is just a phone call. Not cool. Anyway..
For me, I get a message informing me I need to have this service activated, which unfortunately the robot speaking does not give a name to. If you have 3 and want this, you can go here:
http://www.three.co.uk/xseries/get_x_series/already_with_3.omp
On the other hand, I want Skype on my phone, a version which can uses either WiFI, 3G or GPRS and can dynamically switch between connections. I want Voip call out, call in, text chat, video chat, I want it all; not a quick fix 3 have made to drum up business. I was considering investing the £5 a month extra in the X-Series Silver package, which comes with Unlimited Skype, Unlimited web surfing, Yahoo! Search, Mobile Mail, Mobilcast, Skype and eBay and is Subject to 3’s Fair Use policy.
Let’s have a look:
—
Fair Use Policy - X-Series
To make the most of the X-Series from 3, we encourage you to use the services as much as you like. To help us meet our commitment to you and other customers, we also ask that you use the services fairly. Our take on fair use limits is set out below.
Please remember that the X-Series services are for your personal use only and do not include using your mobile as a modem with your PC or laptop.
A “month” is calculated from the start of each of your monthly billing periods. The following fair use limits are all separate and there is no double counting between them.
Unlimited Data
Fair Use Limit: 1 GB each month
X-Series - 1 GB should be more than enough to allow you to surf websites, use ISP email and download podcasts
X-Series Silver & Gold - 1 GB should be more than enough to allow you to surf websites, use Mobile Mail and download podcasts
We will let you know by text message once you have reached the fair use limit and ask you to cease using the included data services for the remainder of the month. If you continue to use the services we may suspend your data usage until the next month. This will not impact your access to other X-Series services.
Unlimited Windows Live Messenger
Fair Use Limit: 10,000 messages each month
This is more than 300 messages each and every day! If you exceed 10,000 messages we may suspend your access to Windows Live Messenger until the next month.
Unlimited Skype to Skype calls
Fair Use Limit: 5,000 minutes each month
5,000 minutes is more than 2.5 hours a day of Skype calls – every day of the month. We will send you a text message to let you know when you have reached 4,500 minutes. If you exceed 5,000 minutes we will suspend your usage and it will not resume until the next month, however you will still be able to receive Skype calls.
Unlimited Slingbox and Orb (on X-Series Gold)
Fair Use Limit: 80 hours each month
On X-Series Gold you get access to Orb and Slingbox (if you have one). These services have a total combined fair use limit of 80 hours each month. We will let you know by text message once you have reached the fair use limit and ask you to cease using it for the remainder of the month. If you continue to use the services we may suspend your Orb and Slingbox usage until the next month.
Using the X-Services to exploit the unlimited offers
We will also consider your use unfair if you use the X-Series services in any way designed to unfairly exploit the unlimited usage or cause us loss, for example, by using the services for commercial purposes, accessing services that are not included or using an unauthorized device.
We may make reasonable changes this policy in accordance with the Terms for 3 Services and any new version will replace this version.
—
So “Unlimited” in fact means 1GB a month of data, 300 MSN messages a day and 2.5 hours a day on faux-Skype. The accepted dictionary term for unlimited is quite different and I suggest 3 look it up before they end up in court. Also, Yahoo! Search, Mobile Mail and eBay are all accessible in the browser on the phone using the unlimited web surfing, so not really much of a deal..
On top of that, 3 cover themselves by saying ” accessing services that are not included” will be deemed as “unfair use”. They also need to look up the definition of fair, because as I’m sure they realize, that pretty much cripples the phone meaning it cannot be used in any more advanced a way than when it first came out of the box. What happened to out progressive and inventive society in the wake of capitalism?
Ok, sorry to go off on a tangent (although I hope some of that may be of interest to anyone on 3 in the UK or not); back to the real subject.
So Skype that works as Skype does on the Mac (or dirty PC), although discussed at length across the internet, does not as yet exist (but it assuredly on it’s way).
However, something even better in my opinion, does.
Fring
http://www.fring.com/about/application/
I downloaded it, installed with no problems and loved it straight away. You can make normal phone calls to your contact list, Voip in and out and text chat with your Skype contacts, use you MSN account as normal, multi point dynamic connection which you can order, it’s got loads of features I won’t list here but check it out; there is even a menu option which locks the key pad, as you cannot do this usually when running an application. It’s great, it’s free, and it works.
I only really have a lot to say when things don’t work, so I’ll leave it at that.
Great work everyone at Fring.
All we need now is for unlimited data usage to mean unlimited data usage, and we can bypass paying for phone calls and just use Skype. One price calls to anywhere in the world from your mobile anyone?
I think it’s time the people using these services (that’s you and me) read the contracts and took legal action. If enough people did, the companies would have to then provide what they advertise already, for free as they already claim. How is it fine that companies can advertise free and unlimited whatever, when the product is in no way free or unlimited? That is just wrong.
Lets make the world would be a better place.
i just notices that to elton1. I’m with 3 in Ireland and on x series silver but since its calling a UK number it wont connect up. anyone have the Irish file?? please
