SlingPlayer Mobile on the Nokia E61

Until Slingbox maker, Sling Media releases a version of their SlingPlayer Mobile for all Symbian devices and not only a few Symbian devices on the carrier 3 all the rest of us can do is to look at these screenshots of SlingPlyare Mobile on Nokia E61 and drool.

SlingPlayer Mobile is available for subscribers on 3 who opt for “X-Series Gold” (£10/month).

The service is intended for the Nokia 73 but just as the Skype application it works on the Nokia E61 as well.

Similarly to Skype on Nokia E61 there are a few anomalies. The application windows do not quite layout as they should but the video and control functions are perfect.

The application does not work over WiFi but since X-Series Gold gives you approximately 80 hours of SlingPlayer data transfer per month it might not be a big problem for this version of the application.

Sling Media - please, please, please release a non carrier locked Symbian version of SlingPlayer Mobile for the Nokia E61.

A big *thank you* to Rich~!

Ed, I have to wonder, though, what the draw of Slingplayer really is. I mean, to me, it’s an expensive box that sits on my tv and does the same thing that Orb does for free. Are they competitors for my mobile viewing habits, or does one do something the other can’t? Do you have a slingbox that you could do an appropriate comparison?

If you don’t use Windows - or prefer to use TiVO, or Cable DVR, a DVD Player etc the Sling can do it for you. It’s dedicated and just works.

Hi do you know if you can use @ the same time a GSM and WCDMA network, I am asking this because I got 3 types of phones 1 is nextel, and the other 2 are GSM and WCDMA and maybe I can carry only 2 phones now, I already have my E61 with GSM but don’t know if I can use 2 lines like a dual mode.

    Thanks
    Jerry

I looked at this but decided not to bother shelling out another 100quid for a sling box when Orb works fine for me. I suppose the one advantage you get with Sling is that you can change channel from your handset, but then if you’re using a web enabled capture system you could probably do it anyway.

Maybe I’m not understanding Orb well enough. I have a Slingbox plugged into the back of my Tivo Satellite receiver, and it uses an IR blaster to manage changing channels, etc. Run the software on my Mac, PC or S60 v2 phone and all is good.

To do the same thing with Orb, I would have to find a way to connect my PC to the Tivo/receiver. Assuming I don’t want coax cables strung around my house, is there a way to do this with Wifi? How does Orb manage channel changes or navigation of the Tivo menus?

Personally, I love Slingbox. I was in a wifi hotspot in Taiwan watching Jon Stewart off my Tivo, and was able to set recordings for other programs by controlling the Tivo interface. That’s pretty darn cool. f I can do that from my S60 v3 E61, then I’ll be stoked!

    Guys,

First, you saved me from getting rid of My e61. I was looking for any help from all those forums out there with no luck. There is a ton of stuff but not specific to E-series. Then 2 days ago I found you :). I must have spend over 6 hrs going through your site. Thanks Thanks and Thanks for all the post and people like me.

    Sling Player issue-
I read this post and wanted to try Sling Player (I have the box and work like a charm) Installation went without an issue, configuration no issues but when try to launch “Could no launch as the network bandwith is not sufficent, try again” this is over my home WIFI. Tried couple time even 5 feet away from WIFI router same issue. Help - What I am missing here, same setting works fine for laptop.

    Skype issue -
Does not go beyond the welcome “Hello” screen. I can see continue - when pressed application exit. Not much is running on my phone. Any help?

—— Any update to this; I have found the same problem and have not found a work around. Is it because of the carrier? What carriers in the US work?

  11. Jim McDonald Says:

What we need here, (unless I’ve missed the point), is a E61 Slingplayer application that works over WiFi as well as over the cellular network. The SlingPlayer Application will figure out what to do depending on the connection bandwidth. I now have a SlingBox Pro, I’m waiting for a version of SlingPlayer that isn’t limited to a specific network, (Cingular), but works regardless of who is providing the network, (WiFi, Cellular One, 3G, whomever)! Come on SlingMedia, help us out!

  12. Param Says:

SlingMedia came out with a SlingPlayer mobile for symbian in the US. However, it is only available on N95, E65, and N75. If you have one of those phones and sling box give it a try… free download on thier site http://downloads.slingmedia.com/go/us

  13. Andy Dignan Says:

I tried to install this version on my e61i and installed correctly, however, the screen just gets goofy and none of the buttons work.

Why would it not work on specific models? Isn’t it just the Symbian OS?

  14. Chip C Says:

Same problem as Andy, I have an E61i and I would have thought the slingplayer for E65 would have worked due to the same version of S60 running. Are we doing anything wrong, or do we just have to wait (and pressure Sling Media to release) for an E61i specific player?

  15. Paul Southcott Says:

I have same problem - there is a UK version, but it appears to install ok then when you run it, just locks my E61

Slingbox say it might not work on E61 but are hoping to get it working shortly -
also this verision if it ever works does us WIFI - not like the 3 version!

  16. Aziz Says:

    Hi guys!

does anybody know whether slingplayer works on E90 or not?

    Thanks in advance!
