WorldMate 2007

I have been a big fan of WorldMate for quite some time. It is one of my favourite applications from even before I switched to Nokia E61. For the last couple of days I’ve been trying out WorldMate 2007.

One new, nifty little feature of WorldMate 2007 is “Weathercaster”. The Weathercaster service is an automatic, visual and vocal weather report that is highly configurable.

You can select up to three reports to be delivered at specified days and times. The brief weather report can be spoken or just be a visual update.

WorldMate 2007 no longer relies on weather data from the Weather Channel. I’m not sure if that is good or bad but one thing is for sure. WorldMate 2006 and 2007 gives slightly different weather reports. See screenshots below. The left is WorldMate 2007 and the right screenshot is WorldMate 2007 - notice the temperature difference.

Another change is the updated UI. The tabbed interface from WorldMate 2006 (below and above to the right) is gone and replaced for a main navigation screen (the first screenshot in this post).

I do like the new look and feel but I miss navigating the application using the joystick and go from one function to the next. With WorldMate 2007 you need to go back to the main navigation screen and then choose the next function of the application.

WorldMate 2007 is a step forward from an already very good and useful application.

For WorldMate 2008 I hope MobiMate will include several new features. Some of these features are already included on other platforms. I hope MobiMate not only brings WorldMate for Symbian up to par with other versions but also include new features. Among other features I would like to see:

  • A “time calculator”
  • Satellite weather maps
  • Tip calculator
  • List of airport codes & airlines 1-800 numbers
  • List of other helpful telephone numbers for travelers - Embassies, SOS International etc.
  • A “Converter” for temperatures, distances etc.
  • A clothing size converter
  • Flight status inquiry function

    Your 2008 version sounds fantastic.

    Sneak peak at WorldMate 2007…

Ed takes a look at WorldMate 2007, and generally likes the application. I can’t say that’s the case for me however. I used the 2006 version on my E61 and was left less than impressed, especially since it costs 30…

  3. Mark Charles C. Tesch Says:

I agree with Jeb, that is quite a wishlist and I hope Mobimate is up for the challenge:) I am still waiting to see if Mobimate will allow me to subscribe to Worldmate 2007 as an upgrade to Worldmate 2006. So far, it remains a demo.

  4. Josh Says:

i just installed it on my e62 and i think its great, it comes with a 3 year trial, and i doubt ill even have this phone for that long so its great!

  5. Richard Says:

I dont understand this whole trial period thing…
Josh, where did you get your 3 year trial period version from? On their web site it appears to say trial periods are for 24 hours & Paid subscription periods are for 1 year.
The version that comes with Mokia phones apparently has a free 3 year subscription?
I personally hate these yearly subscription software packages & would never buy one. If they made it a 3 year paid subscription for that price then maybe.

  6. Ivan Says:

Where do you see the 3 years trial? The only thing I see is 1 year subscription.

Anyone knows if we can upgrade the worldmate that comes with the e61 for free with this one?

  7. Foad Says:

    Mark-

I can’t seem to find WM 2007 for my E61 on their site. Do you happen to have a link?

  8. Bart S. Says:

I have the full version of 2006, I have been scouring the web looking for even a Trial of 2007 with no luck.. where the hell do u get it?

  9. Alan Fletcher Says:

    Try http://www.mobimate.com/s60_business.shtml?filename=series_60.jpg.

  10. admin Says:

    Bart and Foad,
Check back later and I’ll dig up the URL later today.

  11. BaRTiMuS Says:

Yeah, the one Alan mentioned is the one I have currently the 2006 version.

  12. vioccc Says:

Did they at least change the way the weather and currencies are updated? With the previous version, whenever it updated its data, it downloaded the 5 day weather forecast for every city of every country in the world and the currency exchange rate for every currency in the world. Needless to say that it took ages even with a wifi connection and that it cost a fortune over a GPRS connection. Plain stupid. So is that fixed?

  13. BaRTiMuS Says:

vioccc: weird.. i never had that prob. I mean it would update everything as you say but it was always fast over gprs and didnt use up too much bandwidth.. i would do it once every few days and it was fine. Less than 5 seconds everytime.

  14. bugmeister Says:

I used to have WorldMate about 7 years ago on my palmIII. back then it did have an exchange table for clothing. The tip calculator is a bit too much. you can easily open a regular calculator and do percentage calc….

  15. Viipottaja Says:

Sad to see the tabs go.. Wonder what the reasoning was? Does lef and right on the joystick have some other function now?

  16. admin Says:

    Viipottaja,
sadly, left and right joystick movement does not have a function assigned.

  17. BaRTiMuS Says:

Admin: any luck digging up the URL for this prog?

  18. admin Says:

    Try this URL
    http://www.sharebigfile.com/file/51987/WorldMate.sis.html

  19. BaRTiMuS Says:

Thanks just played around with it for a bit.. every thing seems pretty much the same.

Weathercaster: Im not sure if you noticed this but on my weathercast on screen it said a high of 12 and a low of 6 degrees celcius but the audio said something different. “ranging from 6 to 9″ if im not mistaken. weird.

  20. Darla Says:

I take it this version is only compatible with the E61/E62 because I got an error message when trying to install it on my N73. Works fine on the E62 though. Thanks for the link.

  21. cantar Says:

This is a great find. I have always liked this app. The one problem that I am encountering is in the weather caster feature. I have it set to “on” but the reports are not spoken, even with the spoken feature activated. All I get is an alert tone and nothing else. Has anyone else experienced this.

Excellent site by the way, I’m hooked on it. Kudos!!!!!!!!!!!!

  22. drqandil Says:

    Hi guys,

I downloaded the sis file, installed, plugged in my email and password that i used to register my e61 complementary three years subscription and It worked in worldmate 2007 (v. 4.0). I did not get any error message or any other message. Restarting the application did not ask for registration info again

    It seems we can upgrade.

  23. Richard Says:

    Thanks for the link =0)

Interestingly, on first launch it says something like ‘This licence has been purchased by Nokia’. Still can’t find any reference to 3 years but maybe it’s reading the original 3 year licence from the phone somewhere?

The Weathercaster doesn’t seem to work quite right for me either. Whatever settings I try, I just get a blank report with no weather details & no voice. Also asks for my email address & password on every launch.

I’m still on the original firmware so maybe I need to upgrade.

Love the idea of a weather application but at one point I had Handy Weather, World Mate & Mobile Weather (nice free app from ubahnstation). They would all consistantly show different local weather conditions.

    WorldMate 2007 Preview…

I’m a definate fan of WorldMate. Mostly because I have a habit of calling and texting people in other time zones. I used WorldMate on New Year’s Eve to send messages to Finland and the UK when it reached midgnight…

  25. Richard Says:

I like WorldMate. But I liked it better in UIQ because it had the OAG (airline schedules) that came with it as well as the afore-mentioned sizing charts.

Just like new cars: more $, less content!

  26. Foad Says:

I had one other quick question. What is the theme that you are using on the E61 in the screenshots?

  27. admin Says:

It’s next Friday’s theme that I am testing out. Stay tuned and you’ll see it on my next “Friday Themes” post ;-)

  28. Foad Says:

Thanks! I am actually looking forward to it. I like the Pearl Black theme a lot but there are some issues with text fields in certain places. Hopefully the theme you are testing doesn’t have those issues.

  29. vd1900 Says:

We need good themes sick n bored of old stuff :(

  30. cantar Says:

This program appears to have many bugs, I have also encountered the problem of the program constantly asking me to submit my email and password each time the program is started. Also the previous version was a lot better in my opinion. It had a nicer UI and more features like flight information, which was extremely handy when traveling.

It has potential to be a great program but they still need to work out some of the issues and re-incoporate the old Worldmate features. I prefer to use Handy Clock for my time management needs and I like the look and functionality of Handy Weather alot more, not to mention it is more accurate when it comes to weather information than Worldmate.

  31. Maarten Says:

The strangest thing happened to me with that registration…Somewhere on the Nokia website it says you get a 3 year subscription i believe and it also says it once when you first register. But after I updated my FW to v3. I had to re-install Worldmate again, put in my e-mail and a password..but I found out that I used, at least, the wrong e-mail adres..but it went ahead with installing anyway…

I’ll try and update to 2007 one of these days and report again!

  32. macalex Says:

I’ve got it from the admin link and worked out fine, but I don’t like this back thing and I don’t get it, why the new version made on Flash, the only thing that comes in my mind that for Weathercast speaking thing :) That is really funny :)))

  33. RJ Says:

    Hello,

I am trying to download World Mate 2007 from the admin site, yet it tells me that the access code has expired?

  34. admin Says:

    RJ,
The download URL above is still working. The application is “downloadable”

  35. RJ Says:

    Hi Admin,

I am going to http://www.sharebigfile.com/file/51987/WorldMate-SIS.html and keep getting an error telling me that the ‘Access code’ has expired after I click on the ‘download’ link.

Is there any alternative ‘download’ site?…

    Thanks,
    RJ

  36. admin Says:

    HI RJ,
    Here’s how you download Worldmate
    1. Go to the URL
    2. Enter the three digit number and click “submit” DO NOT CLICK “redraw” (that will result in an error)
    3. Wait for approximately 20 sec
    4. Click download

  37. Stewart Says:

    http://www.sharebigfile.com/file/51987/WorldMate-SIS.html

I’ve downloaded worldmate from the above url - but the app never starts on my E70. The screen clears to give the impression the app is downloading but then instantly back to ‘desktop’.

  38. admin Says:

    Stewart,
I think the above file might only work on the E61 (for now).

  39. K Says:

Is it possible to install the WorldMate 2007 on a E50 ? If so how???…..

  40. ::metamike:: Says:

i download travelmate at the nokia dl page and when i install it the screen says something like “insert you e mail and get your “three” free years licence”
i do it and it works fine but i think is not the same version that you post, is the V3.00.43… but it´s free… ;-D

  41. CK Says:

Followed these instructions by Ed; but still fails to dl worldmate! Can someone help?

    Here’s how you download Worldmate
    1. Go to the URL
    2. Enter the three digit number and click “submit” DO NOT CLICK “redraw” (that will result in an error)
    3. Wait for approximately 20 sec
    4. Click download

  42. Pat Says:

Seem to me that that website has a problem with their download service. Can anyone put this file somewhere else? Thanks

    Pat

  43. admin Says:

    Hi Pat,
    I added the file here:
    http://download.yousendit.com/153CBBB101E2C12B

  44. CK Says:

    Hi Ed,

The link is working. Downloaded and installed it without a hitch.

    Thanks.

  45. Pat Says:

    Hi Admin,

    Thanks so much.

    Pat

  46. hillstrubl Says:

will this version not have any idea how to deal with timezone changes like worldmate 2006? When I went from NYC to LA to Sydney worldmate took its cues from the E61’s native clock settings, which could figure out where it was, what time it was just by changing the GMT +/- settings, worldmate was always wrong. It couldnt understand what I wanted it to do, which was to switch the primary clock’s settings to the local time…

  47. johnny Says:

I have problem after installed this worldmate 2007, my E61 can’t even receive the SMS, anyone got this problem?

  48. Farhan Says:

I just got it and does not work on Nokia E70 , however Nokia Catlaogues is also not loading previous version of Mobimate for installation

  49. Alexa - Portugal Says:

I have the E61i that came with this great app and ive filled the settings forms like in this topic - specialy the forecast weather girl ;) - but still after waiting for the clock to strike the set time, i get neither a message text or a voice tone from the program… did i miss a TURN-ON setup?

  50. wouterk Says:

Same problem here like Alexa but on my E61.
I can’t get the weathercaster to work. :(
I set the time, and auto update and day and report (both spoken and on ‘paper’) but nothing (not even the report) happens.
Anybody with a E61 were the weathercaster works as supposed?
