Windows Live Messenger
Windows Live Messenger, which we wrote about here, has found a new home. The previously available client from Microsoft China stopped working, or at least is no longer free.

However, the same Windows Live Client client is available as a download from, among other sites, Nokia Hong Kong. The client is free (for now) and works great on my English language Nokia E61.

When I first installed the application I looked in my "installat" file but couldn't find it. I tried installing it again but got a message saying that the application was already installed. Hmmm. It turns out that the application gets installed to a separate folder called "Internet" so don't look for the application in the "Installat" folder.
Thanks for the tip Darla, David and everyone else!

Hello,
Thanks for the tip, Ed! One wonders if the application will again fail to work after 2 months’ of usage. I had the China version previously, but I uninstalled it recently after being prompted that it’ll no longer work!
January 30th, 2007 at 9:54 pm
Oh.. it’s really a old story. The latest version is 2.0
You may download it here at http://mclient.msn.com.cn/
You must register the software after 2 months free trail time… wat a pity.
Only 10 RMB/month(ONLY 1 EUR/month) cheap, huh.
Be aware. The webpage is all in Chinese. Just select your cellphone brand and model in step1. Leave the blanks, click the right botton in step2. Then you get the file and install it from your computer.
let me know if any question, drop me a message to my cellphone emailbox:gloom@i2m.cn

Hi Rolf,
Thanks for letting us in on version 2 of the software. But I think the million dollar question is whether version 1 hosted at Nokia HK free?
Regards.

well - if you want one that doesn’t expire, you can try EQO MOBILE. just google it and you can find the download link.

Hmm I agree with Magnus, for some reason I am unable to download it as well… also, the last time I downloaded the client from the HK site (after uninstalling the previous version of Windows Live Messenger) I was brought upon with the prompt to pay up or exit… sigh..Thnx for the tip though!
January 31st, 2007 at 6:53 am
Just downloaded it…installed it. But it’s not installed in my Installation folder but in my Internet folder. Launched the application without a problem and works great!
Previously installed the 2.0 chinese version and uninstalled it. Using E61 from HK.

Working alright for me too…hopefully no “pay up” message.
One thing that bugs me though is that it notifies you that if will access hp data, network data and user data.
Creeps me out on the privacy part. Wonder if they secretly collects your private info.

For those having the problem downloading, I was having the same problem, just hold down the shift-key when you click on “Agree” and wait, should bring up the download window.
January 31st, 2007 at 11:31 pm
Param, I had the same problem at first, but having unistalled the previous (Chinese) version, I could install this version from Nokia.com. I hope this helps.

I tried the link given by Yuvpursh.
Could download and install.
BUT, the software is asking me to register by sending an sms.
Since the sms (8168) number is not a valid number in India, I’m not able to use the client.
Any Pointers?

Hi guys,
I downoladed it, but when the download is complete, it says “Application messenger_s60_ 3_0_v_… not supported”.
Done it three times, following either the tweeked link, or the shift + accept button” methods, both with the same result.
Any idea what’s going on ?
I did not use the previous Chinese version.
Cheers,

Hey, this app stopped working a couple days ago..it says it only works in mainland China and Hong Kong… :’(
What can I use to connect to MSN now?
April 14th, 2007 at 1:51 pm
Version 1.0 is what I’ve been using for a long time and it works fine, and is in english. It’s available from Nokia HK and from various other sources. I dont dare trying version 2 since it appears to be in chinese and I don’t know if it would expire, but I’d like to find out since 2.0 has several new features.
