Synchronize Mail For Exchange Email Using IP Passthrough
A common question I am asked is whether it is possible to synchronize your email with your device. That is, not using OTA email push but rather using a cabled synchronization of email from your computer to your Nokia E61. I thought it was impossible and even answered that it couldn't be done. It turns out I was wrong (I apologize for misleading some of you).

You can cable sync your email from an Exchange Server using Mail For Exchange. It is a bit complicated but Sonny has created a great tutorial.
"E61 is a great device, a lot of happy owners can attest to that. But there’s one thing that really caught a lot of us by surprise, it doesn’t synchronize email with Microsoft Outlook.
Either we do not read the specification properly or simply do not understand what it says. I want to be able to bring my email at the end of each day or when going out. My company, even though we use Microsoft Exchange server, does not allow us to connect to it wirelessly (security issues we are told), and there are only a select few who are allowed to use Push Email. So synchronizing OTA is out of the question. I thought that was the end of it. I continued reading through different features of this almost perfect phone, and I found out about IP Passthrough feature.
With Nokia Network Bridge installed on your PC, IP Passthrough will connect your E61 to the same network where your PC is connected. In most cases, your PC is connected to the same network where the exchange server is accessible. With that idea on mind, I started playing around with it and I manage to get my exchange emails using this connection.
First, you need to have the following applications:
• Obviously, Mail for Exchange installed on your E61 phone. Can be downloaded here.
• Nokia Network Bridge installed on your PC, it can be downloaded here.
You need to make sure it is properly installed. Documentation can be found from the same website.
Here is how I setup my phone: Create an IP Passthrough Connection. Tools – Settings – Connection – Access Point – Options – New access point – Use default settings. The settings should be as shown on this snapshot:

Once the IP Passthrough connection is complete, connect the E61 phone using USB cable.

When the phone is connected to the PC, you should be given 3 choices, select IP passthrough. You will normally get a notification that your phone is connected in non-compatible mode, you can ignore that message.
Once the phone is connected in IP Passthrough mode, your PC will create another network connection for your E61 Phone. This will require a DHCP server to assign dynamic IP address for this connection, as well as the rest of the network requirement such as Subnet Mask, DNS Server and Default Gateway.
You can go to the WXP control panel to check the Nokia Network Bridge, it should show the E61 listed on it. You can also go to the control panel and Network connections and you should find a new network connection for Nokia E61 Remote NDIS Device.
This means your E61 is now connected to your network. Sometimes it takes a while to get this setting to work as your PC negotiates with the server for the rest of the network settings.
MAIL FOR EXCHANGE CONFIGURATION:
Download and install Mail For Exchange. You can refer to this blog post for more information. The only setting that I changed is the access point where I obviously used the created IP Passthrough connection which I named IP Pass.

You should be able to find all the required information your network administrator. Or you can simply go to your outlook settings to find out the server name.
Here is how on a WXP: Start – Control Panel – Mail – Email Accounts – View or Change existing accounts and then Next – Double click on Microsoft Exchange Server.
The next window should display the Microsoft Exchange Server name. After finding the server name, click cancel on all open window to ensure that you don’t change the settings.

The information supplied here should be the same user name you use to access your email. In most cases, this is the same as the network user account and password. The domain is normally the same as the domain name on the email address. However, a different domain name could be used. Your Exchange administrator would know.
You should always click Back every time you finish changing configuration to be able to save it. If you simply click the Red button on E61, that will discard all the changes you did. You can also synchronize your Contacts, Notes, Todos and Calendar entries using the same. This is all part of the Mail for Exchange configuration.
When you finished the Mail for Exchange configuration, you should immediately see it trying to synchronize with the server. If all information supplied is correct, you should be able to see your emails on your E61 phone."
Thanks for the write-up Sonny.

Thanks for posting this Ed. Hopefully, some other E61 owner will find it useful.

The burning question for me really is: How can I synchronize bookmarks from my PC to my nokia? Does anyone have any tips?
February 8th, 2007 at 8:24 pm
Any write up for an e62?
February 8th, 2007 at 11:39 pm
I am not familiar with E62, the only thing I know about it is that it doesn’t have a Wifi on it. Does it have an IP Passthrough choice when you connect the cable? If it does, I would guess that it should work.
February 8th, 2007 at 11:49 pm
The three options I get are packet data, data call, and high speed.
February 9th, 2007 at 12:26 am
It would be interesting to post a solution for linux users.
Thanks

that leads me to the question: why is there no IP passthrough on the E50 ?
February 9th, 2007 at 2:43 am
Donovan, I checked the manual for E62 and there is an instruction on how to setup IP Passthrough on it. You can download the document from ttp://nds2.nokia.com/files/support/nam/phones/guides/Nokia_E62_Configuring_en_1.pdf.
The instruction for setting up IP Passthrough for E62 is on Page 7 of the document. Hope that helps.

Is there a way to allow Mail for Exchange to connect to multiple accounts? I have one connection for my Google mail. Wondering if I can setup another for my work or hotmail. Thanks

My company uses network without a domain. We use email accounts in the domain of our ISP. I just want to know if I can tranfer the email messages in microsoft outlook from my computer to my E61. Thank you
February 10th, 2007 at 1:31 am
Swagat, the instruction is for users of MS Exchange server. But check with your administrator what kind of settings used to access your email from your ISP. If they are using POP3 or Exchange, you have a fairly good chance of being able to download your email to your E61 using IP Passthrough.

I tried this with allinfo, but phone still reply “Invalid host address, Please correct the Exchange Server information in Profile>Connection”. Anyone face the same?
February 12th, 2007 at 7:23 am
Alex - Yes, I get the same error message: “Invalid host address, Please correct the Exchange Server information in Profile>Connection”.
February 12th, 2007 at 1:11 pm
I have three options for data bearer as well (none were ip passthrough). Looked at the connection pdf and it didn’t help either. I have unbranded by E62. Any help? I am in the same boat as donovan.
February 12th, 2007 at 2:39 pm
Arthur/Alex, try using the IP address of the if you know them. I used to get the same error last Friday, I think my Passthrough connection was having trouble resolving the host name, so I put the IP address instead.
February 12th, 2007 at 2:42 pm
Jeff, I am not familiar with E62 as I have not used them. The manual from the internet as I pointed out earlier did mention something about IP Passthrough, but if you guys don’t see it, then it may not be available on this model.
February 14th, 2007 at 11:51 pm
Sonny, from the procedure you described, M4E will take the USB connection as the default choice or possibly even the only choice for synchronization with the Exchange Server. When the phone is disconnected from the USB cable, will M4E automatically return to OTA synchronization? Can anyone verify this?
February 15th, 2007 at 8:16 pm
David, the IP Passthrough is one of the selection available when connecting the USB. But even if you select IP Passthrough, an access point needs to be made and M4E will have to be configured to use this connection.
I suggest that you make an access point groups with both your OTA connection and the IP Passthrough as members. This should automatically switch your connection back and forth.
February 21st, 2007 at 6:00 am
Does the M4E sync with IP passthrough works through an http proxy (squid) too?

mikel

i use a Nokia E50. I can’t find the IP passthrough option in my phone. Do you have any idea?
March 8th, 2007 at 2:07 pm
I read somewhere that IP passthrough is not supported on the E50. You may try to contact the Nokia support.
March 14th, 2007 at 10:26 am
Reading the manual for the E62, it says that the E62 has IP passthrough, although it says that the service provider decides to maintain it or eliminate it. I guess this is why it’s is not available. Anybody knows how to unlock/activate this feature?
March 20th, 2007 at 3:59 pm

For E62 users. I just purchased an E62 from Rogers in Canada. My box came with a “User Guide Update”/errata from Nokia. It states:
“Your device is not equipped with IP passthrough. That feature would have allowed you to connect your device to a PC with a data cable to use the PC’s network connection as an access point for your device. Any mention of this feature in the text or the device should be disregarded.
We apologize for any inconvenince this may have caused.

Hey Sonny, this is an awesome tip. Solves a whole lot of other issue I had by being able to have the phone on the same LAN as the PC.
I occasionally work from home, using a VPN to connect to the office. In this case, the phone seems to be on the local (home) LAN while the VPN client puts the PC on the office LAN. This means that the sync won’t work. Is there anyway to modify how the Nokia bridge works to bridge with the VPN interface ?

Had my share of discrepancies interrelating in my recent oppenned account with verizon in December 2006. Ist after being for a while with an MSN account (Dialup) they offer Verizon FIOS Internet. So I accepted with a request for LAN service to be associated with my old Windows 98 PC. So they installed a router and etc. When for the 1st time the screen openned with some yahoo involvement that I wasn’t aware of. They promised that allmy e mail was going to be automatically transfered to the new servers system… I wanted to ramain with my MSN interface, but yahoo kept interfeering and blocking my emails. I erased all the yahoo portions that I could do. And I’m still having problems. Had use Googgles before w/ no problems. I was able to find my genealogy in Pueto Rico with Googgles and done successful researches for my liberal studies, Thanks!!!
As I continue w/ my liberal studies I find Googgles very informative and quick in every asking… But I find the system of emails for archiving through the E61, IP to be exchage very difficult … But as soon as I’m able to do all this, my problems will be over. Thanks for the chance !!! TOR
PS Then I’ll also import this needles guys out of my system!!!

It’s a great ideal ! and choosing to share it is greater !
What I can’t figure out is, why sync Email to cellphone instead of reading it on PC directly ?
I just can’t aware the purpose, and won’t miss any feature of this phone.
Any responds will be appreciated.

I am using Mail For Exchange on my E60 and connecting via wireless while at home, which works fine. Whenever I go out, I have to manually change the access point to my 3G setting.
Is there a way to automatically fail-over to 3G when there is no wireless available?
Thanks,
Ben

CAn anyone tell me why cant I retire the GAL(Global Adress List) from my exchange sever, where in the roadsync I can do the look up
May 28th, 2007 at 3:45 am
@ Ben,
T o my knowledge, the current version of Mail For Exchange doesn’t support Access Point groups so you have to manually switch from WiFi to GPRS.
@ Ahmed,
GAL is not supported in the current version of Mail For Exchange.
Cheers

Please has anybody been able to solve the IP Passthru puzzle on E62? Is there any firmware update that can be installed to make this options available? I am in the same shoes with Donavan and Jeff.
What about any third part software that can do this? Any Brainwave?
July 7th, 2007 at 3:21 pm
This is a nice writeup. I had figured out that it worked a while back, but it was mostly just a curiosity. Hadn’t considered the scenario of people grabbing their email over cable and reading during a commute.
Also, here in the US data prices are still high. This allows people without data plans to use MfE.

I have an e61 on the three network and wish to receive all my work e-mails as they come in through our work exchange server. I have been told it will only work through a POP or IMAP account. Is this true and should i throw the phone away!!!!!!!
July 31st, 2007 at 4:07 pm
Jason,
That is not true. I would throw away your carrier!
Just do a search on the blog for “Mail For Exchange”, there are a number of different blog post covering set-up, features etc.
Basically you need to know the following three things when setting up Mail For
Exchange to support push email of Exchange:
- Domain (which is not your internet address domain but your exchange domain)
- User name
- Password
Cheers

Any help/advice please you can offer for my Nokia 6110 navigator. I tried to install this, but it said, device not supported. I just want to sync my emails on my PC Outlook to my phone. many thanks.
September 11th, 2007 at 11:54 am
Hi Sonny, Ed,
Do you have an update for the IP Passthrough for the E61i. Why would they leave this out of an upgraded phone (E61 has it) on purpose?
What surprises me more is that the God of all Nokia smartphones, the E90 does not have it !
Thank you very much in advance.

Hi,
My company has disabled OMA access too. I do not really crave push mail though, Is there any chance i can get the E61i access my emails on Exchange server using IMAP/POP3.
Thanks in Advance
October 15th, 2007 at 11:01 am
Hi,
As has been mentioned by others, I being an owner of E61i is not able to carry out the synchronising of mails with Outlook as the IP Passthrough option is not available. Can you please suggest an alternative please?
Thanks
November 13th, 2007 at 5:46 am
IP Passthrough has, as far as I remember, been removed on the Nokia E61i, so this only works for the Nokia 9500, 9300, E60, E61, or E71 phones.

Any news yet on mail for exchange for a nokia 6110 navigator?? vert curious about it, would love to sync my agenda etc on my phone..!
June 30th, 2008 at 12:34 pm
Hello Guys, I would like to know how I could synchronize my agenda in my Nokia E61 since I work professionally with Outlook Express which does not have a calendar. I have synchronised my contacts already which works but I would like to synchronise my agenda as well without changing all my e-mail configuration by switching on Outlook. My present PC configuration is: Windows XP, Outlook Express and I hold a very old version of Outlook 1997 (if really necessary).
Can somebody help me?
June 30th, 2008 at 4:40 pm
You may want to upgrade to Outlook, but keep in mind that Nokia only supports Outlook 2000 and newer versions. You could also upgrade to Windows Vista and have out-of-the-box support for Windows Calendar, otherwise you’re pretty much forced to either switch to Lotus (unlikely, I suppose/hope) or upgrade to Outlook and/or Windows Vista.
There are also 3rd party solutions such as a sync utility compatible with Google Calendar, just do a quick search…
