Smart2Go Beta For Nokia Eseries
One of the absolute highlights of running this blog is the user feedback. Email I receive from average Eseries users like you and I.
Last week I must have gotten at least ten messages urging me to try out the beta application available on Eseries devices from Smart2Go - the mapping company Nokia acquired back in August '06.

Thanks to everyone who told me to try it out - I like it!
One of the great aspects of the application is the flexibility from an end user perspective. The application/service can be used with or without GPS. There is also a free, basic service as well as a premium option. So whether you have an GPS unit or not, and whether you want to upgrade to the premium version or not, there is something for everyone.
I know, you shouldn't judge a book by its cover and you shouldn't judge an application (alone) by its look and feel. However, I really like the UI of Smart2Go. The graphics and the short animations are good! It's a good sign that the application is so visually enjoyable.
The basic application for your Eseries device can be installed via an SMS pushed link or through your computer. I used the over-the-air option but would not recommend that. It's a large file, 3.44 MB, so you're better off installing the application via your PC.
I also recommend installing the MapLoader to your PC (sorry no Mac version..) so that you can download the maps you think you will use on to your device, or the memory card of your device. This way you don't have to worry about the cost of data to download the maps you commonly use.
However, it should be noted that the current version of the application relies on some data connectivity when searching for Points of Interest. If you are worried about the cost of data connectivity there is a settinging to never allow the application to use the network.
Loading the maps to your memory card is easy. I plugged in the miniSD card in a memory card reader and loaded the maps. Although it's easy it takes time. Loading the California maps, approximately 70 MB, took me about two cups of good coffee (45 min).
The application is easy to set up and customize. You can turn off "roaming warning", tweak network settings, limit the amount of data stored on the memory card and change the map mode from a 2D to 3D view.
You can also limit the the amount of "point of interest" data displayed on the map. With all POI turned on the map gets very cluttered.
There is a simulation mode, which will give spoken direction and display the turn by turn on the map. Useful if you want to study the map to your point of destination.
Another cool feature is that search results of a point of interest can be sent via SMS, MMS, Bluetooth or IR.
All the above features are free and works well without a GPS receiver. However, there are several premium services in addition.
I really like the fact that the application gives me, as an end user, the choice of upgrading to add functionality. As opposed to other mapping solutions which is sold as one complete bundle with no "free" services.
One way of adding premium content to the application is to download city guides directly from the application. These guides are from Wcities and provide a wealth of information, including reviews and write-ups about resturant, bars, museums, events, shopping, hotels and services.
I purchased the San Francisco guide $10.48, directly from the application, and was impressed by the purchasing process which was very smooth, as well as the content of the guide.
If you do have a GPS receiver, such as the Nokia LD-3W, or another GPS receiver, you might want to consider upgrading your service so that you can get turn-by-turn map display with voice commands based on your GPS provided location.
Once again, I really like the choice of licensees. Smart2Go offers four different licensees. A 7-day license, 30-day license,a 1-year license or a 3-year license. In addition, regions can be limited so that you can exclude areas you are not interested in, to get a lower price. For an example, USA but not including Canada is cheaper than the US and Canada package.
Other map solutions tend to have far fewer choices in terms of licensing. For an example, Route66 $149.95 (North America) Wayfinder Navigator $99 (North America).
In summary; I really like the easy set up, the flexibility in terms of free services versus the premium services. Even better is the tiered licensing system. All, in all a great application.
However, where are the live traffic status display available in Google Maps and Windows Live Search For Mobile? I hope this will be implemeted soon.
I also would like to see a "free" advertising based version of the GPS based solution. This free version would be subsidized by non-intrusive ads a-la Google.
I wouldn't mind occassional start-up splash screen ads, or relevant, location based ads if the upside is a free GPS based mapping solution.
The application is available for download from here and the MapLoader can be downloaded from here.
Symbian Guru Supreme - Antony Pranata, has a great write up of the application here.

cool!!! i’m installing it, curious how it works with my GPS…
February 19th, 2007 at 4:37 pm
I’ve been running it for a couple of days now. Works great!
February 19th, 2007 at 6:25 pm
I’d like to see them release everything for free! Normally this wouldn’t make much sense financially, but since Smart2Go is now owned by Nokia, they can use it to sell phones!
Built-in full-featured navigation software would be a huge selling point.
And honestly, that seems to be the direction the market is going. Nokia is already giving away 95% of the useful functionality for free. Google Mobile Maps w/ GPS is a free poor mans navigation system. Ad-driven models like AmazeGPS are out there. All it takes is one entity to release a fully free app and everyone else will be forced to as well… (Sometimes its good to be a consumer)

Smart2Go Review Posted…
Ok so I’ve been playing around with Smart2Go, specifically in comparison to TomTom on my N73, and I have to say, they both have major pluses and minuses. I’d planned on doing a video review of both this weekend, but…
February 19th, 2007 at 10:47 pm
I tried out the smart2go app, and it is pretty good. I’ll consider getting a BT GPS add-on to make the most of it.
Few things I don’t like:
1. the maploader app doesn’t remember which maps you have downloaded and installed onto your phone. It seems to download them directly on the phone and you only have the option to ‘remove all maps on device’…
2. Not being able to search places of interest without a data connection. This puzzled me because they are all on the map and you can plan routes without a data connection.
3. It’s a bit slow/tedious zooming and panning around the map with the joystick, some good shortcut keys are needed.
I noticed that you can zoom in and out using the left and right shift keys. Using the numpad to pan a screen at a time in the 8 directions would be really helpful.

Hi Chris,
The next version of Smart2Go will not require a data connection to search POI per this comment from Mike @ Smart2Go:

I have tried Smart2Go, I kinda like it but still I think Tom Tom 6 is my only trusted navigation that I use with my Nokia LD-3W. The navigation is much easier with TomTom and it is more user friendly. Smart2Go it is maybe good for pedestrians but not for driving.

I love this little app. Does anybody know how to change the initial map setting (currently Germany on my install) to another place on startup such as your home address?
February 20th, 2007 at 1:48 am
I understand what your saying Dimilaz, I use TT6 with Europe maps. But my next vacation could be to the US, I’m only going to be there for 3 weeks but still would like to navigate my way around. I’m certainly not going to buy a TT map of the states I’ll be visiting, just for a vacation of 3 weeks…I haven’t quite figured it out yet, but what I understand now is that you can’t navigate around without the premium package when you do have your own LD-3W? But even then, it would be perfect to opt for a 30 day license for just your vacation time..
February 20th, 2007 at 1:52 am
Sorry, read up first then comment…stupid stupid me! “The voice navigation system is not free. You have to subscribe it separately. If you don’t subscribe it, the route will only be displayed on the screen without voice.” according to: http://www.s60tips.com/2007/02/13/featured-freeware-smart2go/#comment-16475

Having a problem. Downloaded the app onto E61, opened it up. Started MapLoader on PC but it refuses to recognise the E61. Tried re installing.
Probably doing something very basic incorrectly but would appreciate a nudge in the right direction.
February 20th, 2007 at 5:20 am
@h
I am also facing the samle problem as you do. The MapLoader will not recognise my phone even if the PC Suite shows that it is connected. Have also tried to uninsall and install again many times but NO… it will not work.
I sended feedback to Smart2Go so if this is a general problem I hope tey´ll find it.
February 20th, 2007 at 5:59 am
MapLoader regonised my E61 only after installing and launching Smart2go. If program has not be runned at least one time, phone will no be detected. Note that Smart2go must not be running when phone is connected to PC…

Works great. The map’s details are very good even in Eastern Europe.
February 20th, 2007 at 8:35 am
Hocki - Try changing the USB connection on the phone from PC Suite to Data transfers. Thats worked for me.
February 20th, 2007 at 8:36 am
@ h/hocki
I also had this problem and after several attempts I reread the splash screen which mentions that the phone should be connected in “data Transfer” mode as opposed to “PC Suite”. Worked fine after that.
HTH
February 20th, 2007 at 9:00 am
Hocki got it right with his post, but he maybe did not explain it that clear..you need to install and run the app on your phone first. Then close the app and run MapsLoader on your pc while it is connected. Or pull your miniSD from your phone and insert in a card reader on your phone. Then it works! (at least for me, but that is how it was instructed).

I’m experiencing problem with installer for E61. I tried to download it either via GPRS or via PC, but the result is always the error “File Damaged” at the end of the installation…
What the…?
February 20th, 2007 at 10:11 am
Thanks guys!
It solved the problem for me as well to change from PC suite to data transfers.
Great program when we become senile so we can find the way home
@Mirko Grewing
I had the same problem at first. After installing and uninstalling a several times it finally worked.
February 20th, 2007 at 10:16 am
I can’t even connect to smart2go main site, it seems not my inet connection because all other sites go well. Maybe this site is restricted to east European states? Can I get my copy some were else?
February 20th, 2007 at 10:22 am
@ mas91
try this http://www.smart2go.com/en/ (in other words with /en)
February 20th, 2007 at 10:50 am
Nothing
February 20th, 2007 at 12:32 pm
Works fine for me at my N80. But I prefer when the maps follows the driving direction. Maybe something for next version? A nice thing is that you can navigate to contacts in your phone, you can’t do that with Wayfinder..
February 20th, 2007 at 12:46 pm
Did anybody note that the space used by smart2go files on SD Card is 8 or 9 times greater than the real files sizes?
The big problem is that the Maploader application stores thousands of files smaller than 3Kb on the card!
My 25.6 Mbytes of maps uses 300 Mbytes on my card!!!
Why they don’t use one big file to store data?!
February 20th, 2007 at 6:43 pm
javsmo,
Check on the properties of the flash card from a PC - shows you how much space is left. For me it is the space left is roughly the same as the total-download
February 20th, 2007 at 7:12 pm
Maploader keep asking me to check if my internet is working….
February 20th, 2007 at 9:49 pm
Maploader won’t run on my Vista x64 (crashes after splash screen even in compability mode) but works great on my e61 hopefully maploader will run on vista soon I like that you can use it to get directions without needing a gps reciever

Hi guys.
I was about to try to install this smart2go onto my e61, but on installation, i got an error message of “Operation Failed”. This error message was part of the Nokia Suite. As I tried other nokia suite function, and they all failed. I tried reinstalling my nokia suite(latest version), but error recurred. I dont think this has got to do with smart2go, but i wonder if its my computer or my e61 causing this. Kindly advise. Thanking you all in advance.

I get the same error message that Anndy is reporting!
February 21st, 2007 at 6:28 am
Ides,
Make an experiment, put your SD Card on an USB reader and check the space used by the following folder: E:\private\20001f63\diskcache
In my case, it has 25.6MB and uses 299MB of disk space, because each file uses less than 16K, as you can see on the image below (sorry, it’s in portuguese but I think you can understand)

Thanks for this wonderful post..I have a Nokia E62. I installed Smart2Go and Nokia PC suite with Nokia Maploader on my Windows XP laptop. I have set my netowork settings of the device “Never” to connect internet since I have not subscribed. Then I connected the device to my laptop using the mini USB cable provided with the Cingular. When I try to open Smart2go in device it works fine and asks for maps, so I tried to download a map from Nokia maploader software, but I get “Please connect your device to your computer via USB using mass storage mode OR insert the memory card into card reader. Remember that you need to use the “Maps” applicaton atleast once with your device or memory card before using the Nokia MapLoader”. Dont know what to do…i dont have an external miniSD card but then even my XP recognizes that my connection is via USB and I had ensured that bluetooth of my device was off during this time. Antony indicated that I need to select “mass storage” or “Data transfer” mode using my DataCable application. However, this is not possible since I have no external memory card inserts….please help me if any of you have got past this without issue.

Hi,
I am new to Nokia. I own E50 which is not listed in the download section. Also it is mentioned that Smart2go is compatible with S60 3rd which is my case. Is it safe to install it despite being not listed? Also I want to ask what are these applications on my phone and what do they do? - Positioning; Navigator; Landmarks;
February 22nd, 2007 at 5:45 am
Can anyone tell me if you can load your own maps?
I have some topographical maps that I use for hiking and cycling. What format are the maps in - I have a couple of programs to load and calibrate your own maps.

Hi Guys, a follow up from my previous post for help, i found out that the problem i had is due to windows detecting my e61 as a portable media player, i think it overwrites the pc suite, resulting in the error message of operation failed, any one can pull me out from this ditch? thanks
February 22nd, 2007 at 9:22 am
Vishnu (and all); I was concerned that it didn’t work on the E62, but apparently it does. Since the E61 and E62 are different rev-levels, I’m skeptical about many various apps (especially since Cingular has made their own BIOS mods). I’m willing to download and give it a try. Thanks for the review and updates.

sorted it people panic over!! i will stick with my tom tom!! LOL
February 24th, 2007 at 2:44 pm
Vishnu et al,
You definitely need to set the Data cable mode to ‘Data Transfer’. Only then will the Nokia MapLoader see your phone’s card - Menu ->Connect. -> Data cbl.
It might take a while to download (I went to a meeeting!) the maps - North Carolina in my case. I then drove home using the maps (no voice) and it all worked fine.
Give it a try. I am using an E61 on Cingular with v3.x
February 24th, 2007 at 4:16 pm
I have an E62 and had no problems installing the software and had no problems downloading maps to the phone via MapLoader.
Vishnu -> “Data Transfer” is a mode you can choose when you connect the phone to your computer via the USB cable. After plugging in the phone, you should be prompted to choose which mode you want. The options are “PC Suite” and “Data Transfer”. If you do not get these settings, then you probably have your device setup to automatically choose a setting when connected; probably “PC Suite”. Try this:
1. Connect the phone to the USB cable. If you are not prompted for a mode, then navigate to:
Menu > Settings > Data cbl.
2. From the “Data cable” menu, you should have one option called “Data cable mode”. This setting is what tells your device to do when you connect the USB cable. My guess is that you have it set to “PC Suite”.
3. You have a couple of options. The first would be to set it to “Ask on connection”. This means that every time you connect the USB cable to your phone, you’ll be able to choose which mode you want. Your other option would be to now switch to “Data transfer” mode. This means that every time you connect your device to the USB cable, you’ll automatically connect as “Data Transfer” mode. I would recommend setting this to “Ask on connection”.
4. If you choose “Ask on connection”, disconnect and re-connect your phone to the USB cable. You should now be prompted for a mode. Choose “Data Transfer”.
5. If you choose “Data transfer”, you will receive a message saying “Any ongoing data transfers will be stopped. Continue?”. Hit Ok.
6. Your phone should now be ready to accept maps from the DataLoader program.
Hope that helps!
February 27th, 2007 at 4:11 am
Have had the problem of the map size being bloated. The Maploader said it should by like 60mb for the east side of Australia. However it tops up my 125mb card in my nokia N73. So what gives ? Seems like it needs more space to download and after the download it may decompress to 60mb, but this is no good for me with only enough space for like 80 percent of the file download.
February 27th, 2007 at 6:01 am
Seems good. I especially like the simulation mode. My main problem, and the only reason I wouldn’t actually use it when I get round to getting a GPS set-up is that the street numbers are wrong on all the streets I’ve checked. (I’m in Australia.) If I was going to pay for something like this I would want to be able to type in street numbers to find an address. It’s not a problem with streets like the one I live on, which is about 120m long, but on a main road that is a number of kilometres long, I’d want to get the right end.
February 28th, 2007 at 9:14 am
I’ve got a problem getting smart2go to recognise my GPS receiver! Anyone has luck with it? I’m using the Holux 236. Smart2go just shows that there isnt a GPS receiver around. Nav4all works fine though… anyone?
February 28th, 2007 at 9:37 am
I had it installed on my E61 to try it out. I was quite impressed, but you need to pay when you want to navigate. As I have TT6 I am not going to spend money it now…
I have had some problems and am very curious if other people had these problems? Installing smart2go resulted in TT6 to freeze on startup (same problem I had after installing Nokia Search).
- Does anyone else have this problem?
- Does anyone have an idea why this is caused?
- Does anyone know how to solve this?
I might like to have smart2go and TT6 installed both at the same time whith both application working.
February 28th, 2007 at 11:33 pm
Well I still have the same error, maploader ask me if I have internet, server problem…..
March 4th, 2007 at 4:40 am
Thanks @GinoI
Got it guys..it works. I have got the maps working on my Nokia E62. Following is the process:
a) Install Nokia PC Suite on your PC.
b) Get your bluetooth connecton or USB Connection b/w PC and Nokia E62 device going.
c) Download and install Smart2Go
d) Disconnect the bluetooth connection and connect through USB Cable and switch your connection mode to “Data Transfer”.
d) Download and install the Smart2Go Maps.
d)Select the map you wish to download. At this time you still need to use the USB as the means of communication, else it wont work. If you keep getting that vague error which says you need to connect USB cable, try to restart your device once, disconnect and reconnect thro USB. This worked for me.
It works! I am using this without connecting to the net i.e. I have set my device connection to net as “Never”. This gives you some problems because:
a) Voice commands for navigation wont work because it needs internet i suppose.
b) Searching of places is tough. I tried to Search by name giving “Los” for Los angeles in a CA map. It never found..so using “*” and “#” I had to zoom-in/out to reach specific locations and save them as landmarks. Search by address wont work.
c)Locating “Amusement parks” and certain places of interest works but not up to mark. For e.g. disneyland park in anahiem was not found thro this though I was in a street next to Disneyland park.
d) I dont know how old these maps are but looks ok for me.
I would request the smart2go group to also provide the voice coammand download as part of Maps that could help a long way. Rest am very impressed by the software. You can get this for no cost which is excellent.
I had one question though if anyone can help…is there a way I can use City Guides? How to download them..thanks

Has anyone been successful in loading the map onto a 2Gb Mini-SD card?
March 5th, 2007 at 1:13 am
@ Vong Xu
I am using a 2Gb Mini SD card and could store the maps into it since I changed to “Data Transfer” instead of “Pc-suite” mode in the phone.
Works perfect.

hi, is there anybody can help me. i d/l and install the map program to e61 and follow above steps to d/l the data via map loader. the data is succesfully downloaded (I d/l indonesia and singapore maps). but when I went to the smart2go program, nothing is there. anybody have the same problem?
March 6th, 2007 at 10:18 pm
Verdi, I am having similar problems as you. I downloaded the Hong Kong map, and when using the device in “disconnected” mode (no network), all I get is the 3D “world view”. Pressing the “0″ key to switch to 2D mode doesn’t do anything.
I’m going to try downloading some other maps. I orignally choose HK because it’s one of the smallest and therefore fast to download.
I really hope I can get this working. I’ve been looking for something like this ever since Microsoft removed from mappoint.com the ability to save maps locally to PocketPC devices.
By the way, if it matters I using an E70.
March 6th, 2007 at 10:42 pm
To followup on my previous post, I was finally able to “find” Hong Kong using the method of zooming in and scrolling around as mentioned by vishnu. This is indeed everything I was hoping for, and more!

Pepelyankov, it works fine on the E50. I have it running on my E50.
March 9th, 2007 at 4:42 am
Hi, I have been useing the smart2go incl. voice navigation for some time and I have also used Navicore Personal for about 1,5 years. Now they are in the same phone (E70) so it is easy to compare them (useing the same GPS unit). Some comments concerning smart2go:
-loading of maps is really slow
-deleting a certain map from the memory card is not possible. Tried to delete all maps with no success, the Map Loader just stalled and I had to delete some other files on my memory card (1G).
-no speedcam warnings (like in Navicore)
-speed figure (km/h) on the screen is far too small, should be much BIGGER
-voice navigation instruction are often “cut off” and in some cases there are contradictions between the map and the instructions
-the GPS-position at the target differs quite a lot from the real position
as a navigator Navicore is superior to smart2go but there are some nice features so hopefully the updated version is a better one. Waiting for the E90 with integtrated GPS.

I’ve installed this on my Lobster 700TV from Virgin, bought a 1gb mini sd card and installed all the maps for the UK and France, since I’m off there in August. Had a problem with the phone not being picked up on the map loader, but put the mini SD in a card reader and loaded the maps fine. The whole product works great on the Lobster, just bought a 30 day licence and I’m off out this weekend to give the route planner a good work out.
March 13th, 2007 at 8:56 am
Nokia MapLoader incorrect displays size of Ukraine map. Nokia MapLoader shows size of Ukraine map 7.1 Mb, but real downloaded data is 24,9 MB.
Also, after few minutes of downloading “Remaining download time” has negative value, for example: -9 minutes -41 seconds. This value increased: -9 minutes…, -11 minutes…
March 13th, 2007 at 10:18 pm
Installed on E61, and downloaded maps for Australia. Turned off network connection.
1) Search not working (as pointed above).
2) Noticed that suburbs displayed on map. However the street address at the top of map shows house number, street, and local council area. Any reason for displaying the council area?
3) Speed of program and map display looks great on the E61. Route calculation does take a while, but lack of address for search a real problem.
Due to take a holiday to foreign country soon, and a bit reluctant to take out a subscription for voice guidance as it will be useless, esp if you cannot set a destination by address (search) without enabling the network function. Roaming in foreign countries using various networks will be expensive.
March 13th, 2007 at 10:23 pm
Installed on E61, and downloaded Australia Maps. All went well.
1) Graphics and display excellent on the E61.
2) Search not working (network set to disable) - as noted above.
3) On map, address and street, and local council area displayed at top of screen, instead of suburbs. Kind of an odd selection.
Will be going overseas soon, and it will be pointless to take a sub for voice guidance if the search for address is unavailable. With roaming, the data feed would be cost prohibitive.

Just sharing my experience.
i tried this software about a month ago when it first came out. After a few days playing with it and downloaded some maps, the software suddenly refused/slow to load or uninstall and my 1GB SD was dead. Bought another 2 GB SD, installed software, play with online map, and today found out that the online map directory is corrupted. luckily scandisk can fix it, but i think i’ll hold off using the software until it is stable enough.
i think the issue is with the way this software write thousands of small files and that means writing thousand times to FAT. coupled that with several times loading, you can easily go beyond your flash MTBF.
has anybody experienced the same thing ?

I installed smart2go on my e65 today, and it ran great the first time. picked up the ld-3w, caught a satellite connection and i was able to navigate around the block on foot.
i came back home and decided to install Maploader to add some maps via data cable. It got stuck at about 3%, so i disconnected the data cable.
while restarting Maploader, i tried to open smart2go again on the phone, and it wont. it stops loading at 30% on the opening screen with the globe, and disappears. and this happens everytime i try to start it, without fail.
has this happened to anyone?

how can I load maps on sd card through Nokia E61 without a card reader
June 1st, 2007 at 2:14 pm
Nokia N73 - smart2go - I’m trying to upload Eastern Australia (60~Mb) and it is taking a friken looong time! 12 hours-so far! I predict a crash or another 6 hours for the final 11%. Terrible suprise. So far, I’m not impressed at all and the program seems sluggish. I can’t believe they are seriously wanting to charge/OVERCHARGE extra for anything.

Follow-up…its taken 10 minutes to get a 0.1% of the map loaded and Maploader has stated 1 hour 30 minutes remaining for the last 5 hours! Hmm…someone doesn’t know their calculations..more updates to follow.

Well, I’ve given up! Only to find NEW PROBLEMS!
Maps and smart2go is permanently installed now.
I can’t kill it! Can’t stand it! Have to throw away a BRAND NEW memory card and my new phone is already spoiled with GARBAGE DATA, only the garbage man won’t take it away! Get it? Avoid the tempation of FREE Anything. Go with TomTom etc., Nokia need a boot in the behind for inefficient compliance, testing and standards. Shame!

I was wondering is someone could help please. I have an E65. I have downloaded the smart2go .cab file onto my PC. I then put it on my phone 1st tried on memory card (2gb microSD) then on the phone memory…. but i cant open the file or see an .exe file to install the application.
Where am I going wrong. I have also Installed the Maploader application on my PC. No problems there… just cant get the smart2go to work on my phone.
Help.
June 8th, 2007 at 9:27 am
to GeeDub: the download file should be *.SISX not *.cab, and the download map should last couple hours after the download status “100%” done (for large file like california) that’s why it’s a “BETA” they really need to work on this.

don’t waste your money buying a bluetooth gps. if you want to navigate it’ll cost you more than a stand-alone gps and the license can’t be transfer to another phone. cost of bluetooth gps + license fee is ~$200USD

Used this a few times now on real journeys in the UK on my E61 on a 30 day lic. Most annoying thing is tha app closes down when I receive a call! Also tries often to take me off a motorway and then straight back on again. Needs some improvemnts!

Checked the smart2go FAQ and reconfirm the licence and plan route within singapore but still not able to get the service. The licence is still valid till next month. Anyone who had the same expereince please help. Many thanks.

Hey Andrew,
i have e61i. i also had problems with the dowload, and it looks like just about everyone else did. in the end, it worked, but it took me 3 or 4 trials to download the maps i wanted. maybe start with small files
(for whatever reason the thing is insanely slow. anyone know why a 10mb file takes 1hr to transfer???)
dont know what else to say. i guess nokia will fix that in the next version.
and why does not the freaking gps work?

My gps doesn’t communicate with Nokia Maps either (works with other apps).
Configuration: e61i - holux bluetooth gps, Nokia Maps 1.1.
August 17th, 2007 at 5:18 am
Bought a Holux GR-239 Bluetooth GPS to work with the already installed smart2go. Where I stay to stay connected would be costly. Now smart2go does not connect to my GPS device. Does pickup the device as I open the application, showing it to me as a connection option. But click on it and the screen just pop right back up.

If you are getting ‘The connection to the map server has been interupted. Please make sure that your internet connection is working and retry’ error when you try to download map data with Nokia MapLoader, here is a few pointers that may help you. I was able to download map data to my E62 phone, without any problem with Nokia Maps v1.02 and MapLoader v1.2.1.
1. The MiniSD card must be formatted to FAT32 instead of the standard FAT16. FAT16 format is usually came standard with most MiniSD cards. Also if you format the memory card using you phone, it will be formatted to FAT16. To format it to FAT32, you need to USB connect your phone with the Data Transfer option. The memory card will then be mounted as a drive. Go to My Computer, right-click the memory card drive and select Format… In the format dialog box select FAT32 as the File System. Of course this will erase everything from your memory card, so backup your data first.
2. You must run Nokia Maps once before trying to download the map data. Nokia Maps initialize all the necessary folders the first time it is run. Otherwise the maploader will not recognize the memory card.
Hope this help!!

GOT IT!!!
I’d given up but the other day finally figured out how to do it, by mistake.
To connect your GPS to the Smart2Go maps on nokia e61i:
1. Go to the MENU -> TOOLS ->Position.
Activate Bluetooth GPS
2. Also in TOOLS, go to Navigator to connect to the GPS.
3. Open the Nokia MAPs software (same as Smart2Go).
Now it works.

I kept getting the “Interrupted internet connection” problem when trying to download maps so I reformatted my SD card as per Jimmy’s instructions. It did not help.
