Welcome to the Family - Nokia E65
I did it. I decided to get the beautiful, new Nokia E65. This device is truly a perfect match between beauty and brains. It's stylish and slim yet incredibly powerful.
I've taken a number of photos of the device, including comparison shots of the Nokia E65 and the Nokia E50, E60, E70, E62 and the Nokia N80.
Update: I included some more comparison shots, including photos of the E65 and the N80.
One driving factors behind the purchase was the four dedicated voice keys of the Nokia E65 that I wrote about previously. It's so simple and so smart - to have dedicated conference call and mute keys!
Of course, it is also crucial for me that I can get my corporate email on the device. There are plenty of email solutions available for the Nokia E65 - BlackBerry Connect, Mail For Exchange (ActiveSync), Visto Mobile and Nokia Intellisync Wireless Email to mention a few.
So what are my very, very first impressions?
- Great slider mechanism. Very solid, yet *slides*
- Don't know what the outer material is of the device but it has a very nice feel!
- Battery life seems very good - 1000 mAh
- Good camera 2 MP (I'll post pictures later)
- Excellent voice quality (after all it's a Nokia
A friend picked up the device for me in Europe. He got rid of all the packaging to avoid any questions from the customs' officers. So sadly, there will be no Nokia E65 unboxing photos.
But I did take plenty of comparison shots.

Nokia E65 & Nokia E70, Nokia E65 & Nokia E62
Some additional photos of the Nokia E70 and the E65, for Chris.
And finally, the comparison shots between the Nokia N80 and the Nokia E65

Thanks for the pictures.
Can you post another one with the E70 from above just like what you did for the E50 (screen turned on - keypad folded) please?
February 22nd, 2007 at 10:32 am
Interestingly enough, the blog’s subtitle doesn’t mention E65 yet
February 22nd, 2007 at 10:44 am
That’s not a N80…
February 22nd, 2007 at 10:56 am
Pierre-Luc,
LOL. Ouch, you got me there. Thanks for pointing it out. I will correct it
Chris
I’ll post some more E70 - E65 images tomorrow under this posting.
February 22nd, 2007 at 11:13 am
yeah…its not an n80…
February 22nd, 2007 at 11:15 am
Sorry guys, my bad. I’ll edit. Thanks for pointing it out.
February 22nd, 2007 at 11:55 am
Sweet! I want one. But I also want the E61i and the E90… better start saving moneyy
February 22nd, 2007 at 12:30 pm
Looks good, but without a QWERTY keyboard, it fails to live up to its label of an E-series/business device.
February 22nd, 2007 at 12:32 pm
I cannot imagine typing a long e-mail, a word document, or even a long SMS using that keypad. A QWERTY keyboard is seriously amiss!
February 22nd, 2007 at 12:39 pm
It seriously seems to be a ploy at drawing the attention of more and more people towards the E-series segment. Otherwise, the phone seems more like an N-series device.
February 22nd, 2007 at 12:40 pm
i feel the same way like Bill M….nokia really has created a big headache for me…
February 22nd, 2007 at 1:10 pm
I am a big fanatic, I know… but, I actually got this device not as a substitue for my qwerty device (e61) but as an additional device. The e65 is perfect for skimming email and focusing on voice (for the days I have plenty of conference calls)
February 22nd, 2007 at 2:04 pm
Hey Ed,
You’re also missing a ‘,’ now in de subtitle..Like I said in my mail, I’m also thinking on getting this device, but have to wait until June or something before I can renew my subscription…what I was wondering, does it feel a lot better in size than the e61?
February 22nd, 2007 at 5:29 pm
I have been usin E65 for a week, I am from Singapore. This phone rocks!
February 22nd, 2007 at 9:21 pm
I think I’m in love. But I agree with Bill M and Zur, I want the E61i and the E90 too. And for Lycanthrope, I agree but you know I just never travel without my Nokia bluettoth keyboard. I get so much questions and wows from sitting at Starbucks or any other cafĂ© with my E62 perched on my Nokia SU-8W stand and me typing away with its sleek looking keyboard.
February 22nd, 2007 at 9:30 pm
Hi,
This Symbian S 60 has different stand by mode.
It shows Miss call aler and some more on the stand by screen.
looks great. I owe Nokia E 61……but think will be left behind when these new machines are in the market.
Thanks,
Sachin
February 22nd, 2007 at 11:31 pm
Any idea if the office applications or browser can be used in landscape mode? thanks
February 22nd, 2007 at 11:38 pm
Is the blackberry connect software available yet?
its not on the Nokia business software site…
February 22nd, 2007 at 11:39 pm
Nice nokia slider, but I cant see the need for a dedicated key for “mute” or “conference call” . Well for me at least.
February 23rd, 2007 at 1:26 am
[...] Some Cool Pics of the Nokia E65: It was mentioned on a call I was on today that the Nokia E65 was flying off the shelves. These pictures give you a good idea why this phone is flying off the shelves. I saw a prototype of this phone in Finland in October, and it was truly as sexy as it looks. [...]

I absolutely love the E90. It’s one stunning gadget! I definitely want to make it my next phone. It’s big, yes, but I hope it’s not too big for my liking. I’ve read somewhere that its going to have a hefty price tag of 700-800 Euros. That’s a heck of a lot of money, but hey, it’s one one heck of a device as well! I’d better start saving!
February 23rd, 2007 at 10:23 am
On the evolution of keypad, probably Fastap (http://www.digitwireless.com/) would be one contender to reckon with.
February 23rd, 2007 at 12:15 pm
Thanks for the additional pictures I requested!
February 23rd, 2007 at 12:20 pm

Thank you for N80 photos.
February 23rd, 2007 at 4:13 pm
I did it too. Made the switch from E61 to E65. I find that 90 percent of the value of mobile email for me is reading it… The screen is bright and the small form factor is a welcome relief after the E61. Email is super crisp. I love it. And the voice qulity is better than the E61. Nokia built this to be the ‘voice enterprise’ phone.
Colin - if you have spent more than an hour or two on a long boring conference call for work you will know that muting when you’re not an active partipant and then unmuting when you’re asked a question happens a lot! It’s great to have that function as a one press button just like on a desk phone at work. Otherwise I used to have to hit the left button and then select mute. and then select the right button to unmute. and if you were already unmuted and didn’t realize it that right button becomes “end call”… enough said! a dedicated mute button is a huge benefit for those of us chained to our phones on con calls…
February 23rd, 2007 at 6:29 pm
Battery capacity is 950mA, not 1000. I have one and I am very happy with it. Only battery life is a little bit shorter compared with my previous N73
February 23rd, 2007 at 9:55 pm
Only one thing missing. WIFI!!!!!
Sorry, but without it, I need to say E61 and the new i version.
February 23rd, 2007 at 10:58 pm
does anyone has sample of E65 video? i know it’s 352 x 288 by how many fps? txs… :]
February 23rd, 2007 at 11:52 pm
Thanks guys for this nice compare
But:
No WIFI
No QWERTY keyboard
No good battery
Yes camera
I think I’ll wait E90 and still using E61
February 24th, 2007 at 3:15 am
Congratulations guys fot your E65
This phone rocks I agree … but the camera seems to suck … what a shame …
Could you please post a few photos taken with the E65 ?
Thanks a lot !

Bought the E65 today. Voice quality for voice calls (GSM) is not good!
I do miss high frequencies! Previous phone, the Nokia 6230i was much better! Is this related to AMR? I remember that I switched this feature on in the 6230i. Does the E65 support this as well?
Up to now I can’t get SIP up and runing. I do have a Voipbuster account, but the E65 won’t connect.
Who can give a hand with this problem?
Thanks.
February 24th, 2007 at 9:46 pm
Call me crazy, but I have the E65 and I could swear it has WiFi. Doing a quick check on the nokia site I came up with this.
http://europe.nokia.com/A4344228
Quad-band: EGSM 850/900/1800/1900 WCDMA 2100
Voice over IP (VoIP) calls via integrated WLAN (IEEE 802.11g and 802.11b standards)
So it has WiFi both b and g. (but not N).
Am I wrong?
February 24th, 2007 at 11:05 pm
Hey… cool post about E65.
By the way; I noticed that the E61 has over 2 million units in the market– but one doesnt find too many games written specially for the E61’s quirky, thumb-straining d-pad and it’s beautiful 320×240 display… guess that’s going to change with the new game I just launched.
Check out my blog… try it out; and if you want, feel free to write a review or tell me on my blog whatever you think of that!!!
February 24th, 2007 at 11:59 pm
yup; dumb of me to forget to write this in my last post;
but yeah, I released a game targetted at E61/E62/E61i and similar phones with 320×240 display and quirky D-pad controller… link to download free trial is in my blog; and you
The link to my game is on my blog; and folks can buy it from Handango… though incase you (writer of e-series blog) would like to see it or review it, I’ll be happy to send you a registration key.

wafi - this phone has WiFi.

Very impressive compact design.

Has anyone tried to make VoIP/SIP call through 3G (UMTS) connection to internet rather than through WiFi based internet connection?
February 26th, 2007 at 5:20 am
I am currently using the E65 with Gizmoproject VoIP and it works great!
February 26th, 2007 at 7:28 am
I’m ready to pull the trigger and order an E65. One question? Being able to use it for music is somewhat important - one less thing to carry. I’ve been trying to find headphones that are compatible, but none of the Nokia headphones say that they are. What can be used with it?
February 26th, 2007 at 8:08 am
I really like the e65, it’s such a great looking phone - love the slider.
If you like this phone too, you might be interested in this video from Truphone* which shows the Nokia E65 in all it’s glory - as well as how to take advantage of the Wifi connectivity and install software that connects it to mobile VoIP.

*Disclaimer: I work for Truphone

@Robsw: I’m guessing it comes with a 3.5mm headphone adaptor (similar to the e61, which I currently own)? It does seem like a great phone, and am so closed to being convinced to buy one myself. Just wondering about the quality of the pictures - opinions over at GSMareana sounds like the photos come out grainy and with a fair amount of noise.
Can anyone confirm this in normal to low-light conditions?
Cheers!

Hi, I am thinking of getting the E65, but can anyone confirm if it has got a VGA camera in the front for Video Calling? I seems to be getting some mix messages on line in regards to this. Cheers.
March 1st, 2007 at 3:13 pm
Hi arfarrr,
It’s a great device. I plan to write more about the camera next week. The device has one camera (on the back of the device).
Cheers

There’s a review on Mobile-review.com
http://www.mobile-review.com/review/nokia-e65-en.shtml
Their English is quirky but the message gets through…

Fantastic review Ed. The E65 looks very impressive. I am currently using the E50 and love the Active standby plugins. I am hoping to upgrade to the N95 when prices become stable.
Just a note for mac users. I have written a free plugin for iSync which now supports the E65. It can be downloaded at http://www.s60themes.co.uk
Keep up the good work mate.
Regards Paul.
March 19th, 2007 at 6:20 pm
Im currently looking at the E65 and I’m pretty impressed. Can someone please enlighten me as to whether the phone is dual mode i.e, WCDMA and EGSM rolled into one or are there two versions of the same phone running on the two different technologies? Cheers
March 30th, 2007 at 2:03 am
You can use Challenger mobile with the E65. Available at http://www.challengermobile.com
They configure your phone for VoIP and SIP automatically over the air when you sign up (which is free).
Cheers,
John

Hi everyone. Good day. I was using N80 and just changed to E65. Nice phone. Just that the camera is so simply done. No flash, no secondary camera is one thing. Dont even have a mirror for self potrait. So if you are in a video call, even when you turn the phone towards yourselve, you have to estimate your shot for the other party to view or you will have to stand in front of a mirror. Hmmmm. Well overall, its a nice phone indeed.
Cheers!!!

Nice phone with great options BUT:
I recieved a phone with defective keypad backilights and swapped it the next day for a new one.
At this new phone the keypad lights broke down after less than two weeks and i had to send it out for repairs. I got the phone back after six weeks with the lights still defective AND fuzzy pixels due to disassembly.
Now I had to send it away again. Fingers crossed.
There are many complaints on the internet of this defective keypad lights. Some people get told by shops that there is no light. Someone else also got a broken phone back affter five weeks of waiting.
The common factor seems to be the Dutch service point that sends the phones all the way to Poland for repairs.

September 18th, 2007 at 6:44 am
I’ve had my e65 for about 6 weeks now and I’m having the notorious key backlight failing. Going to call Nokia today for repair
Other than that…. hands down, it’s the best phone I’ve ever used.

Hi.
Got the E65 about a week ago. Having no current problems. I suggest to new users who are having problems with it, use the manual given! It really does help. I have my music, pictures etc.
My only downfall, is that it takes pictures lesser quality than i thought it would be, but i dont mind!
October 25th, 2007 at 6:25 am
I recently got an excellent voice recognition program which will transcribe .wav files. Is there anyway to record wav files on my E65, so that I can do dictation without my laptop?
Thanks

What a crap it is!
I want to warn all people considering this model. Don’t! I’ve made a mistake of entrusting in the brand and not checking any independent forums _before_ purchase.
Got one a few days ago - it was a brand new model, but had to have the simlock taken off, as networks didn’t match. This voids my warranty to each I intelligently agreed. I remember me saying to the guy - well the phone is new and Nokia is reliable, so why bother.
Now, the keypad light is gone and I’m impatiently waiting for all other problems to develop. How thrilling.
I’ll dump this crap through an auction site in a two months or so, when I will renew my contracts. Hope the auction will be popular. After all, if someone badly neeeds this phone, they can buy it for half the price and already broken.
Oh, and bloody texting has been modified in a way that “reduced language support” which earlier allowed for special characters in my languge to be converted to non-accented latin letters, no longer works. It works bloody the same as “full support” so why bother putting this option in the first place (did work in past models though). Now each SMS is 62 or something characters long. How briliant. I’m sure all the operators are so grateful.
I’m gona convert to fridge-like handsets by LG. I &%%$&(# promise.

February 5th, 2008 at 8:09 am
Otoide poweroff phone and turn on this will make the keys work again. It seems it has a software bug.
February 19th, 2008 at 10:49 am
Man this E65 toy is a mess. I bought one recently only to discover the same night the keypad lights don’t function. Do i have to light a candle or light with a k750i torch to dial my girlfriend. Nokia sucks
March 8th, 2008 at 2:04 pm
I bought an E65 two months ago. The keypad had no light. I gave it to Nokia service. They cept it for a month and they gave it back to me with no problems. After a week the keypad had no light again!!! I will give it back again and I will ask to replase it with a new one. After this I agree: Nokia sucks!
