Inside Nokia E65 - Mini Review
I've now used the Nokia E65 as my primary device for a few weeks and thought I should share some screen shots and initial impressions of the device.

Much have been written and said about the gorgeous form factor, the unique keys on the front of the Nokia E65 and the great sliding mechanism. Therefore I will look at the device mainly from a software perspective.

One of my favourite new features of the device is the the enhanced Active Standby. Nokia has implemented some subtle changes to Active Standby that is a GREAT improvement from an end user standpoint.
In the new Active Standby missed calls, new message, new voice mails and similar notifications can be displayed as a pop up message or within Active Standby. It's a now a user defined setting.
Another enhancement is the WLAN wizard which is accessible from the Active Standby screen. It is easy to turn on/off the WLAN radio and quickly see available WLAN network as well as each networks status.
The WLAN wizard also lets you directly access a network without first setting up an AP. This is a great improvement for scanning and accessing WLAN networks.
Another improvement, not related to Active Standby, which I am happy to see, is the fact that the "own key" which first showed up on the Nokia E62 now is included in the Nokia E65. The "own key" can be assigned to just about any application.
Also pre-installed on the Nokia E65 is a search application which lets you search for local content just the way Nokia Mobile Search supports local content search.
Being a BIG fan of personalizing my Eseries devices with themes I was hoping to see more official (read: created by Nokia) themes on the Nokia E65. The device I bought only includes one additional theme - "Dots".
Since the Nokia E65 is a non QWERTY device the presence of predictive text input is not a big surprise. However, I wish predictive text input would also be included on QWERTY devices as well.
Just like on the Nokia E50, the Message Reader application comes loaded with the device. Message Reader is a text-to-speech application that reads sms and email messages.
The Message Reader supports A LOT of different languages and often feature two or three voice choices per language.
Preloaded on the Nokia E65 comes a "stub" application for easy download of Mail For Exchange and BlackBerry Connect. More information about about M4E and BBC comes on the device in the format of PDFs which the included Adobe PDF application can open and read.
Having the "stub" application on the device makes installing Mail For Exchange or BlackBerry connect a true cakewalk.
My all time favourite Microsoft Office reader/editor Quickoffice is pre-installed on the Nokia E65.
All About Symbian posted a great review of QuickOffice 4. However, the version on the device is QuickOffice 3.8.5
I've saved the best to last
- one touch conference call dialing and the new Team Suite application.
I wrote a dedicated post about the four unique keys on the front of the Nokia E65. The four keys being; Address Book, My Own Key, Mute and One Touch Conference Call.
It's very easy setting up the dedicated conference call key. The first time you press the key it will take you through the few set up steps. The key is used for a default conference bridge number but also for setting up conference calls with participants chosen from the address book.
I've been a big fan of the Nokia Team Suite application since I first discovered it on the Nokia E50. (It is now available for the rest of the Eseries as well. If you haven't tried it out I suggest you do so)
Nokia Team Suite is an application designed for easy communication and collaboration among teams. (It's actually also a great social network tool. In addition to using it at work I also use it to stay in touch with groups of friends and my family).
New in this version are events icons, showing new messages, emails and missed phone calls from teams and team members. There is also a team communication log. This log stores information about all communication with team and individual team members - phone log list, received/sent emails and other messages. Another enhancement is support for searching data related to the team or individual team members.
The application has also become more customizable. All, in all, a great step forward of an already great application.
Summary:
I bought the Nokia E65 not as a replacement for the Nokia E61 but as an addition. I'm addicted to QWERTY keyboards but I still want a smaller back up device that is as capable as the Nokia E61.
The great conference call capabilities, the long battery life, the support for enterprise email and the sexy, slim form factor was the deciding factors for me.
For a more traditional review hardware/software of the Nokia E65, the boys over at All About Symbian have posted a great in-depth review of the Nokia E65 here and The Register Hardware reviews the Nokia E65 here.

OMG, that phone is sexy and very smart too.
The best E65 review I’ve read.
Thanks and enjoy your new toy!

Thankfully thay have opened up the Active Standy more plugins, eventhough from nokia itself.
I hope they let 3rd Party applications use the Active Standy

March 11th, 2007 at 11:45 pm
The “My Own Key” didn’t debut on the E62, its been available on all flavors of the Communicator for a while now (9500, 9300, 9300i)

March 12th, 2007 at 3:36 am
Any chance of sharing that “Dots” theme? It looks fantastic!!
March 12th, 2007 at 3:49 am

March 12th, 2007 at 5:02 am
I can see from some of the Screenshots that the Address Book is still shown as ‘Last Name First Name’ surely that can be altered ? Having the same issue with my E61 and I can’t seem to find where to change it ?
Cheers,

Excellent writeup!! Based on your previous comments about the E65 (along with a strong desire for a mute/unmute button for conference calls), I upgraded from an N73 to an E65. I love the E65 — totally agree that it’s fantastic to have so much info on the active standby screen. For the “my own” button, I installed “hourpower” — an app that reads the time aloud and is available here: http://www.symbianresources.com/projects/hourpower.php
I appreciate all the information you’ve shared about the E65 in this (and previous) posts. It really is a great device and I’m very pleased to have it!

What I liked so much about E61 was the ample availability of free RAM to applications (approx. 24MB). How much “free RAM” does SysExplorer or NSysInfo report as available to applications on E65 startup?
March 12th, 2007 at 12:23 pm
Orion: Just installed NSYSINFO. Here’s what it says
Total RAM: 48,234,496 B (48Mb)
ROM Size: 18,874,368 B (18 Mb)
Total Phone Memory: 64,129,024 B (64Mb)
Total Flash Memory: 1,029,832,704 B (1Gb)
Iain T: To chance from LAST FIRST to FIRST LAST, go to address book, options, settings, name display options change First nm Last nm OK

Hi,
Great review. Just to add a little e-series info - bought the black E50 a few months back (after having my E61 stolen!). The E50 also features all the new Active Standby features mentioned by Ed. So I’m guessing newer editions of other e-series phones like the E61 might also soon feature the same active standby software.
Regards,
Ashwin

I have a question, would the new e61i ave all this improvements on software side, I do know that its still coming out with os 9.1 and not os 9.1a
March 13th, 2007 at 4:28 am
Series 60 phones seem ok for GPS navigation but all suppliers deny support (or future support plans) for the E65 - should Route66/TomTom work on this or do they have to write new software - anyone tried?
March 13th, 2007 at 7:18 am
What do the buttons on the side of the phone do?
March 13th, 2007 at 9:35 am
Hi Markus,
The buttons on the side of the device are:
record button
“edit” button (turn on/off predictive text, change to number mode, insert symbol or change language)
Volume up and down
Hi Vakul,
I don’t know this for sure but I assume that the improvements in Active Standby (etc.) will also be available on the E61i as well as the E90
March 13th, 2007 at 9:56 am
cyberdoggie:
thanks for installing NSysInfo! The value that I’m particularly interested in is “Free RAM”. It appears just above “Total RAM” (at least in the version I use on my E61). If you could reboot your device and publish the Free RAM value, that would be really helpful. Thanks!

E65 Has Customisable Active-Standby!!…
Ed over at E-series.org has posted his thorough review of the E65. Filled with tons of screenshots, the device is picked apart and comes out alive. Also, in a VERY fascinating find, head on over to the Nokia Nseries blog…
March 13th, 2007 at 4:50 pm
One other thing I like about the E65 is that since the key lock is now handled by the slider, the left soft key is now usable as a shortcut key from the standby screen without any delay.
March 13th, 2007 at 5:54 pm
Hi and I am new to wifi phones. Appreciate if you could advise.
Had called up the Nokia help center but different operators gives me contradicting replies
I have access to 3 wireless network, one at work encrypted by WAP, one at home encrypted with WEP and MAC restricted connected and one public (non-encrypted) library wireless network.
1. Does the E65 have a MAC address?
2. Does the E65 have the ability to save up several wireless configuration/profile, so that I can preset these profiles and just select the profile to activate at different place (wireless points). Or do I have to key in the WEP/WAP password everytime I switch networks.
Thanks in advance for the information.
Mic
March 13th, 2007 at 11:08 pm
Hi Mic,
To find out the WLAN MAC address of all Eseries devices just enter *#62209526#.
You can set up a number of different profile so you won’t have to key in the password each time you switch networks.
March 14th, 2007 at 1:01 am
Yes, very useful review. Regrettable they included only one theme — I agree that an idea of a business phone does not mean there should be just one theme for all users. Kinda stupid. Moreover, judging from the design of the phone, the target audience for the E65 seems to be rather diffuse than strictly corporate. Does anyone know if other (say, N73-based) S60 themes fit OK the E65, given that the device now features this additional standby functionality, etc.? (I wonder if that nice Turquoise theme released by Nokia guys would work on the device?…)

Thanks for the tips.
By the way, I’ve tried to add comments in Firefox (win and Linux) but got and error of “Error: This file cannot be used on its own.”
I’ve sent this out in Opera

Hey, considering buying this phone.
Just wondering - can you customise the other buttons on the front, other than the “My Own”. I don’t think I’m going to have much use for the conference button so it would be nice to be able to change it.
March 14th, 2007 at 5:13 pm
Hi, one question that most review does not address.
Any idea what is the time/duration that a fully charge E65 can last just for playing MP3? Believe that would be a great info to all
Mic
March 15th, 2007 at 11:35 am
Is the E65 available through any particular carrier? Or do you just have to buy unlocked on ebay? I am Cingular and have an E62 currently. Thanks!
March 15th, 2007 at 5:02 pm
Hi.
Does the E65 support IM? Can I contact Windows IM or Yahoo etc with E65?
Also, Can i use Skype with E65?
I’m confused because I haven’t seen any reviews testing these features.
Thanks,
Gaby

sorry to post twice. Also wanted to know about how ‘fast’ it is. My E62 takes a minimum of 3 seconds to load everything I open! Thx

You write the best and most convincing reviews.
If not for you I wouldn’t have dared!
March 29th, 2007 at 7:16 am
Great review.
Just thought i’d answer a few questions i’ve seen.
I have successfully installed tomtom navigator 6 on my E65, and it works like a charm.
Yes, you cn use skype. I’ve got mine on 3uk, and it came with skype already installed. Another good app to use for skype if you can’t find a version for the phone is Fring ( http://www.fring.com ), which can be used for Skype, google talk, and a few others too.

I would want to know if the software Message Reader for Nokia E61 will be available
April 2nd, 2007 at 12:49 pm
I’ve tried to install T.Navigator 6 on my E65 and i’ve got a message ‘instalation not possible’ (on the phone, on the end of the instalation procedure). Can Lloyd please explain how did he done?
Thank you

Hi, i really like this phone, but i’m torn between this phone and the Nokia Navigator, im thinking i might get this phone and install tom tom instead. However i am wondering about a small matter of the conference key, this is one feature i probably won’t use. Can this key be re-programmed for another function, or is the only programmable key the “My own key”. I dont see any reason for the keys to be fixed to a certain job, i’d prefer the conference key to control something like Skype.
April 4th, 2007 at 6:48 pm
Nokia needs to offer “disable” option for auto slide lock request in addition to “disable” option for auto call disconnect when slid closed.
April 7th, 2007 at 1:13 pm
Hi Brock. I had this problem a couple of times, and all I did was restart the phone and tried again. It installed eventually. Sorry I can’t be any more help.
April 11th, 2007 at 12:38 am
Have downloaded a theme from one of the many free Nokia theme download sources online, onto my computer. Transferred it via the data cable to the memory card on my E65, but cant seem to “Apply” it, from anywhere.
Any ideas?
April 13th, 2007 at 10:33 am
Hi,i’m trying to install some themes to my Nokia E65 but it says that there is a certificate error..What can i do?I’ve tried to solve the problem as you said for the Nokia E61,but i still cannot install themes…
April 13th, 2007 at 10:37 am
Fanny,
read the theme post carefully - at the end of each theme post there is a link to a fix for the “certificate error” issue.

What I want to know is does the text to speech work automatically if you recieve a message, for when you are in the car? Also, does the version you have a rotate function. Do you know if the 3uk version have it?
April 18th, 2007 at 7:54 am
I believe that the version of Series 60 in this phone does not have the screen rotate function.
April 24th, 2007 at 11:43 pm

Cool, I have just upgraded from N70 to E65… E65 is pretty fast as against N70.. I really was worried about the cost of the handset, now looking at the features, I am really impressed… Nokia has done it again… not to say this is a cool blog.
Cheers
April 26th, 2007 at 8:26 pm
Anyone have any idea if/when E65 is supposed to get a firmware upgrade?
April 28th, 2007 at 9:06 am
hi all, enjoying the hell out of my e65. found out only today that despite not being able to rotate the screen for any other functions, the e65 does in fact allow rotation to full screen for videos. this has got to be the best buy on the market right now, price and feature wise. i almost went with the samsung ultra music from my provider (the ultra was free, the e65 cost a smidge), glad i chose wifi over flippy screen.
also skype works amazingly well through “fring”.
April 29th, 2007 at 2:37 am
hi all is there a program that lets you
1 locks the keypad auto instead of pressing power and selecting lock when the slider is already closed after finising a call
2 let you make the font bigger and icosn on the home screen ???
the 3 phones i was after was the N95 samsung u600 and the E65, the N95 was to big and the samsung bat was not very good but i dont even use phones for a buisness as i dont have one but i just use it for every day use
April 30th, 2007 at 12:06 am
Hi all. There’s a pre-installed application from third party called ‘Nuance Zooms’ You can find it in the “Installed’ folder on the Menu screen. Remember, if the ’sis.’ file is stored in the Micro SD card that comes with the phone, then you have to back-up back to your phone memory before you change to a new memory card. I just got my new E65 and made a mistake to change the card to a larger MB without realising the file was there and now I lost it completely in the phone. Nokia Singapore cant do much as its from a third party. Anyway, can anyone help me how do I get back this free apllication ? Many thanks for any help. Cheers !!!
April 30th, 2007 at 9:28 pm
Hi, i own a Nokia E65 and was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction.
I have several mp3 files stored on my “microSD card”, and wanted to assign some of those files as ringtones for a certain contact GROUP. however when i went to “assign ringtones” to the group it takes me to the phone memory files and not my microSD memory. I have looked all over my phone for an option to browse and choose files from my microSD card.
It would be great if someone could help me out
thanks for your time

Hi,
You mention that “Just like on the Nokia E50, the Message Reader application comes loaded with the device. Message Reader is a text-to-speech application that reads sms and email messages. ” I have had an E65 for several months and have yet found a way to use this feature to read my email messages ?? o you know how to do this ?? P.S. I’m on vodafone in the UK.
Many Thanks

hey i need help on the e65 how do i make the phone speak when i get a text message??
it did it once before but now it wont work
August 23rd, 2007 at 1:56 pm
Re: message reader - under office apps
I managed to arrange mine onto the active standby screen.
Main menu - tools - settings - phone - standby mode
simply change right or left key selection to message reader, then this will show on the main screen where you can play as soon as you receive a new message.
Hope this helps. Im just figuring out if i can put tomtom on here, as i tried a version my dad had and it did not work but i think they were exe. files, any ideas?
Thanks

Hi,
I just got an E65 and am trying to connect at home to my broadband service. Problem is the broadband service requires a username and password, so I can get to my router no problem but always time out with a no response from remote gateway msg because I haven’t connected with a username and password.
Is there anywhere in the E65 that you can define a username and password for an access point ? There doesn’t seem to be any options to do this that I can see..
Any help would be really really appreciated!!
Thanks,
Tyson

I noticed the auto keypad lock has been raised but no solution offered. I think this is a real weakness with the phone. Can anyone confirm one way or the other whether its possible. Thanks.

Hi, I just got an E65. The quick access key for the contacts, quick “call to” key etc stopped working. I then had to switch off and switch on. They work now but have been disfunctional on and off. Anyone else have the same problem?

It’s nice to hear people say good things about the E65, but I have a simple problem. If there is an incoming call and I answer by sliding, the phone simply switches off. Sometimes it will just restart on its own. I have checked the battery several times and the problem does not seem to be battery related as stated on the Nokia website. I am not even using the phone anymore for the past 3 days. The battery will not even last 3 days, my N73 battery can last for 7 days without recharging, so I am back to the N73 now.

Absolutely same problem as with Lutendo’s phone. The switches off just like that……..I fail to understand the reason. I am not using any third party game, theme or any application…..its just 2 weeks old phone & the very second day it started rebooting or simply getting switched off suddenly.
I was thinking of buying N73 & dun know what happened…I fall for its looks & now repenting. If anybody knows a solution…..it will be very helpfull……….

Well, the switching off and the quick access button problem seems to be a very common problem(many have reported), and no solution out there for it yet…maybe a firmware update or something in the future would do the trick!
The phone is a real beauty, pity that it has so many defects! I switched from an N73 to this, the N73 is far more stable but then again its not this stylish or sleek

Wen i first bought the E65 i had the problem of switching off and restarting.. so i had the phone replaced and i STILL have the same problem!! its frustating how a new phone can have defects like this..
(also the lights for the number pad are either non-existent or defected too)
its a pity, Nokia has done nothing yet to fix this problem!

Hi. Ive seen a number of references to the message reader working with email, but i have tried absolutely everything (short of a software upgrade) and it always just reads my txt messages. Tried adding it as a shortcut key as per the above suggestion but it still just reads my text messages. Has anyone actually got this working?

Phone turning of by itself on slider action seems to ba a battery contact problem. Tightening the battery terminals with a very small scewdriver seems to do the trick!

i’m from the Phils. the texting capital of the world. I love my e65, the best phone i’ve ever had! But then I have a problem with it’s battery life, If i use the MP3, The battery scroll is already in half. My Nokia 2600’s battery lasts longer considering it’s a lower end of Nokia phones. And also, when I download fr the internet, my unit performs slow.

hi,
greetings of the day !! sir actually i m not finding the option of name and number hsown in the phone book so please do tell me about that option and it will very please to you

The problem with these phones switching on and off is caused by a poor battery fitting. If you simply slot something down both the edges of the battery, it should solve the problem. My partner did this and it is now not a problem. Let me know if this works for you. Post the results on here please.

dot–I got my e65 free from vodafone in Spain… if your mobile contract is up in France, you might try threatening to go to another carrier to see what they offer you.

Hi guys and girls,
If you have an expired certificate for a theme or application just reset the date on the phone back 1 year..this usually solves that problem. A rotateme
version is coming out soon that will solve the landscape mode problem with internet. just google the website for rotateme. Finally there is a huge upgrade for the firmware use your Nokia updater if you havent already..this will solve alot of your functionality issues..hope this helps!

I have a question. My cellphone provider in Australia just opened in my city the access to 3G. They keep telling me my nokia E65 has not 3G support.
However, I can see it has the dual mode in which can pick up a GSM network or a UMTS network (which apparently equals 3G)

Bought an E65 7 weeks ago, after 4 weeks it displayed an error “please insert sim card”, took it back to the shop, faulty sim card and a duplicate was made, 7 days later, same thing. Sent the phone back for repair, came back with a message “mechanical fault”, either way it has been fine since.
The biggest feature is that this phone is Symbian v3 compatible, which means a whole host of programs are available for the phone, such as youtube, divx to name just 2, also I bought a 2Gb sony SD card and it works flawlessly even though manual states 1gb is max.
Right now a small issue is that Nokia phone updater software isnt compatible with Vista.. (new version coming it said).
I love the phone to be honest.. all i need know is someone to release airhack for mobiles and I’ll be laughing..
Oh last thing.. and it drives me nuts, the display screen has a list of shortcut icons showing, which is uneditable.. i’d really like a way to select the shortcuts I want instead of the ones it thinks i want.

Almost a year back i saw Nokia E65 Model in U.S.A and it was just like LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT and their I decided to purchase E65 but i have to hurry back to India and after returning back to India i was too busy for nearly 8 to 9 months in this time period i used other model of Nokia and the time came to purchase Mobile phone i went to the shop and asked for E65 but it was un-avalible & i waited for another 2 month’s and finally i got my Nokia E65 Model almost after 13 months.
It’s a superb model and have no word to say it is marvals model of it’s kind.
Hat’s of for the manufactures.
My wishes to whole Nokia team for their superb job they have done in cellular world.
