Threaded SMS For Nokia E61
Sometimes, built-in applications leaves a bit to be desired… Luckily, there are plenty of talented, fast-moving, entrepreneurial developers who can identify the opportunity and create a solution to fill a void.
Case in point - the built in SMS application on Eseries devices and the newly released ThreadSMS.
ThreadSMS provides some missing and often requested features which should have been part of the built in SMS application.
The most obvious enhancement is the layout - a threaded IM-style overview of your SMS messages.
ThreadSMS supports a wide range of emoticons as well as all the "standard" SMS features such as "send, receive, reply, forward and callback"

If you have never used a QWERTY device which supports threaded SMS you don't know what you have been missing. If you have used a device which supports threaded SMS but are now using an Eseries device you know exactly what I am talking about - threaded SMS will change the way you use SMS.
As with all first releases of any software there are some minor flaws. However, I expect the developer to continue polishing this application and release new updates with fixes and enhancement.
Despite these "first release" issues I still love this application. If you only buy one application this year, make it ThreadSMS. For $15 it is well worth the price!
Here are some comparison shots with how threaded SMS is implemented in the built in SMS application of the Treo 650.
Nick, (the developer of ThreadedSMS) on the behalf of all Eseries users who have been waiting and waiting for threaded SMS - THANK YOU~!

That’s is a really great clue, I really loved the way Treo handles the SMS (like threads) and when you move to Nokia it’s really a set back, and there is no smile faces on E61/E62, I think Nokia people believe that the smiles are not design to be in an E series phone, what?

Great News! I loved using 8100 Pearl and really missed the threaded sms when i switched back to my trusty Nokia E61 for its great features and WIFI… Threaded SMS is a blessing if you are a business man and handle lots of text messages, calls etc.. You can instantly know the history, details, etc.
Thank you Nick and Thank you Admin for posting these great findings and continue to support the Nokia E-series.
Looking forward to using ThreadedSMS on my E61 and E61i ( God knows whenever thats gonna come out..
… )

[...] The E-Series has a post regarding Threaded SMS for the E61 (really, what hasn’t the phone manufacturers wise up and use threaded SMS as an option for viewing SMS?). The Treo 600 started this and since then there’s been 3rd party add-ons for Windows Mobile and Symbian. Can we have this built-in, please? Does anyone know a good threaded SMS program for Windows Mobile 5? [...]

I am trying to find the beta download/trial version and can’t find it anywhere on their site. Anyone have any link to the trial before I pay the money to try it on my Nokia N95.
April 8th, 2007 at 9:53 pm
Hi palmsolo,
Nick (the developer) just released the software within the last 24 hours or so, so I think he might still not be completely up and running yet. Check back within the day or so.
Cheers,
Ed

Well, as for me I didn’t like the chat option on some older Nokias, 3310 and later, and I never used it. I don’t like to keep any records in my phone because who knows when that can be bad for me (my girlfriend getting to know with whome I am cheating on her :)). Maybe this is a cool piece of software, I will surely try the trial version, but I don’t think I will continue to use it.
Anyway thx 4 posting and keep up the good work.
Does any1 knows if there is an application like MumSMS to have different ringing tones for different ppl from whome I receive SMS?
April 9th, 2007 at 1:18 am
That’s a great news! So many people were waiting for the threaded sms application. Big thanks to Nick!
April 9th, 2007 at 4:05 am
Does it support Good Contacts?
April 9th, 2007 at 4:53 am
ThreadSMS - 3rd Edition Beta…
I’ve had the pleasure of beta testing Ehandysoft’s ThreadSMS solution for S60v3 devices. ThreadSMS displays your SMS and MMS in a threaded, IM-like format, making it easier to keep up with conversations. It’s something that Darla Mack and Stefan hav…

So many questions:
1) Will ThreadSMS become the default SMS application on the phone, taking over from “Text msg.”? I.e. if I went to a contact and selected “New Text Message”, will it open ThreadSMS? When a message arrives and I press ‘Read’, will it open in ThreadSMS?
2) Can ThreadSMS and “Text msg.” read the same message database? So, all my texts can be read in both applications?
April 9th, 2007 at 8:08 am
Hi Hussein,
1. ThreadSMS doesn’t become the default SMS application. It is a separate application and the standard SMS app is still the default. Selecting a new text message will start the standard sms app, not ThreadSMS. However, you can of course open ThreadSMS and then have access to all your SMS conversations.
2. Yes.
Cheers
Ed

Great, thanks for the reply

I paid the $15 and inputted my IMEI, but did not get a download link for the software or a serial number of any kind. I emailed the author and have no reply yet. Should I just wait? =(
April 9th, 2007 at 2:28 pm
Looks great but one question. Since its not the default sms app and say you open the sms with the prog first will the phone see that txt msg as read?
April 9th, 2007 at 3:08 pm
Hi dez032,
Just wait, Nick is responsive but might be in a different timezone.
Hi jerad,
The sms shows up as read in ThreadSMS.

I would like a symbian version of trackID. The one you can use on SE walkman phones. It’s an awsum piece of software and works great. Anybody ideas?
sorry for the offtopic message
April 10th, 2007 at 10:41 am
He replied last night and sent me the .sis file with a reg code. Installed easily and works great! Only problem I noticed was that it doesn’t always label conversations with the correct contact name (ie. 555-555-5555 instead of John Doe) even though the contact is in my Address Book. I’m sure it will get ironed out in later versions.
April 10th, 2007 at 11:59 am
So there is no way to set it as the default SMS program? Its quite a pain if its not possible.
April 10th, 2007 at 1:49 pm
Hi Dez,
Thanks for the update.
Afro,
As far as I know there is no way to make it the default SMS program. It’s not a big deal though. You just use ThreadSMS for all your SMS needs.
Cheers

How many costs one SMS in your country?
In Russia is about 6 cent. It is normal, to spend such money for one message?
I guess - NOT!
April 11th, 2007 at 4:05 am
I meant: to spend such money for one message in apps like that))

Love the program, but how do I get rid of the tagline after the test “Sent by ThreadSMS”?
April 13th, 2007 at 9:18 am
Nick has been very responsive to me in helping solve issues with the program. However, I want others to know of some issues that I am experiencing that make the ThreadSMS unreliable for business purposes. I would post on the developers forum, but that forum has been taken over by Spammers. Here is what I am dealing with:
1. Some of my text messages are not receive by persons on a different network. I send text with the default and they receive it right away.
2. The program reverts back to the trial version from time to time. I have to input the Key again to get the full version functioning.
3. When registering, the first screen shows the IMEI but will not let me input it unless I erase a number and then type that number back in to go to the Key input screen. Apparently some text has to be input manually before it is accepted. When you first go to the register screen, the IMEI already appears, but can’t be entered unless some typing takes place.
4. Some chat threads “disappear” even when they are not deleted (still show in inbox and sent folders).
5. The ability to use the phonebook is inconsistent. Sometimes the program lets you use it, other times it doesn’t. Although this may be related to the program reverting back to the trial version.
As I said, Nick is very responsive and I think the program has potential, but I find it too unreliable to use it for mission critical communication. I was carrying on a “chat” thread with my sister with no problems only to discover that the multiple text messages I sent to my secretary never got to her. I thought she had left her cell phone at home.

Hi all,
Thanks for all of your support on ThreadSMS. I wanted to test for a long time. But many buddies want me to use it so I release it quickly. Up to now it work well on most user’s phone. (I have contacted with Joseph Candito to solve his issues). I think there should be some problems. So I guarantee update for free, and collect your suggestions, fixed the problems, continue to add new features soon.
This week the new features:
-Export chat history to a txt file.
-When these’s new incoming SMS, the app will replace the system’s SMS message window or switch to ThreadSMS automatically.
Best regards.:)

> Only problem I noticed was that it doesn’t always label conversations

i have this problem all the time on my e61 both in mesgs and phone calls, but only with a few select contacts. it’s quite frustrating. anybody have any idea what causes this or how to get around it?
April 16th, 2007 at 12:39 pm
I believe I fixed my contact name problem by changing phone numbers to look like “312 555 1212″ in my Address Book, instead of “(312) 555 - 1212″. All texts to that person seemed to be labeled correctly afterwards. I have to test this further to make sure, but it worked for one of my contacts.
Nick,
If you are reading this, how did you fix Joseph’s problem with sending msgs to people from other networks? I have the same problem. I cannot send SMS to people on Verizon using ThreadSMS, but sending it through the built in Nokia software works just fine.
Thanks,
Desi
April 16th, 2007 at 1:41 pm
desi,
thanks for the help, but i’m not sure what you mean about the phone numbers. i don’t see any option in the e61 to save it as “312 555 1212″ OR “(312)555-1212″. its just a single edit field in which (in all cases, both for contacts that come up correctly and those that don’t) my number is set as: “13125551212″. this is *exactly* the way it comes accross when that person calls too, it just doesn’t recognize their number from my contact list. it only happens with a random selection of contacts, too. so weird…
any other thoughts?
April 16th, 2007 at 3:19 pm
You’re right Joe. It seems completely random as my friend just txt’d me and his number is stored like “3125551212″. Some of my numbers are stored with parentheses, and I thought that might be the culprit. But I guess it doesn’t really have anything to do with that. =( Hopefully Nick is reading?
April 16th, 2007 at 3:24 pm
oh, i’m not talking about this app. i haven’t even tried it (yet, waiting to hear more about these bugs getting squashed). i’m talking about within the default txt app the numbers appear this way. it also occurs when people call me.
April 16th, 2007 at 3:28 pm
OH LOL….I’m sorry…Honestly this doesn’t occur in the normal txt’ing app for me. The normal txt’ing app works just fine for me. When people call me I do notice that has happened to me a couple of times. But it was very rare.
April 25th, 2007 at 2:04 am
Paid, using it, love it to bits and no problem so far. Just that when creating a new message, the previous text should be cleared out from the input box. Two thumbs up for the developer.

May 1st, 2007 at 11:30 pm

May 2nd, 2007 at 12:17 am
hi, Sunil :
It doesn’t work the way how to install threadSMS nick told you . I had tried many times i turn off certificate when i installed. But is still installing failed. I read those comment right here the situation all happen on E61 and E61i.
May 3rd, 2007 at 12:32 am
Same thing happens on my N73, firmware updated in october. Nick also tried to help me by tuning the same settings on the phone, but no luck. Glad to hear that I’m not alone with this problem, I’m sure there is a solution somewhere.
May 3rd, 2007 at 3:02 am
@sunil & @nikkor88
Yeah, tried changing the certificate acception on and off, didn’t work.
Maybe the reason is the 3.xxx Firmware.
Didn’t get any response from nick until now, but I hope he is working on it
May 3rd, 2007 at 7:58 am
Doesn’t work well when changing viewing orientation with the E70. But Nick said it may be fixed with the next version.
May 3rd, 2007 at 11:17 pm
Nick sent me an email saying that he found a fix for my problem, and that he will send a new version in a few days.
Hopefully this will solve other people’s issues too.
May 9th, 2007 at 5:44 am
so far phone numbers with parentheses and “-” in them don’t get recognized? That seems like the standard for phone numbers though. ie: (555)-555-555 or even 555-555-555
This program has the potential to be so powerful and great.
May 19th, 2007 at 8:32 pm
I’ve had two Symbian Nokias that would randomly not associate contacts with their numbers. My 6600 did it and now my E62 is also. Any comments or solutions?
May 21st, 2007 at 12:56 am
All in all, this is an excellent product and for an ex-Treo user who switched to the E61i, its a godsend!
May 22nd, 2007 at 2:08 pm
There are new sms-chat software on http://www.symbianwave.com/product.php?id=smschat_s60
Looks pretty… Skin support. But shareware.
June 11th, 2007 at 10:45 pm
Hi, please be carefull of this program and manufacturer. I purchase the program 4 days ago and didnt get the software. I have emails him 3 times and never received a reply. I am going to do a charge back through my credit card company.
June 12th, 2007 at 1:34 am
Hi, would like everyone to know that i have received the program and to ignore the above post. although i do think they should handle purchases better and advise people as to what is happening and that it may take a while to get the software.
June 22nd, 2007 at 3:17 am
hehe
Hey Chris, I think Nick is a one-man-developer and giving his best providing a good and needed software. Maybe we should help him improve the software
So long and btw.. my version still does not work with my E61.. too bad
June 22nd, 2007 at 3:56 am
Hah.. this was fast.. I wrote Nick a mail today, and he replied nearly immediately and sent me ht new version (ThreadSMS1.12.EHandy.sis)
And this finaly worked for me and my shiny E61
bye bye
July 12th, 2007 at 9:58 am
The new version (1.13) rocks! it now replaces the default sms app, so you’ll never need to open nokia’s messaging app to read sms. Awesome job Nick!

July 12th, 2007 at 1:24 pm
@desi
I´m testing version 1.13 on my e61. During installation I got the message of “incorrect version” but could finish the process. Is this a known problem on this device?
I think this is an an app with huge potential.
What do you mean with “replaces the default sms app”? Is there a possibility to switch off the standard sms notification after getting a knew sms?
Thanks for your reply

I bought this a weeks ago, got this bug:
- i have to search one by one when there was a new incoming sms, should be a shortcut such press A and we will straightly directed to contact with A letter
- there were half of my contact that did not display it name, only numbers. should be more integrated with the contact app.
- memory low is often appear when it have loaded more than 190 conversations.
So far is this..anybody??
September 27th, 2007 at 6:03 pm
Is it compatible with Nokia E90?
October 25th, 2007 at 8:26 am
I have an E61 and it takes forever to send a simple SMS - I have cleared the memory and no difference. Do you guys know of anything i can do to speed it up as its become infuriating.
January 15th, 2008 at 3:26 pm
I have same problem as Spencer above - suddenly & for no apparent reason my E61 takes about a minute to send a text. V frustrating. Anybody know of a fix. Also anybody know how the new Kaiser TyTyn 2, HTC Tilt compares in performance speed & functionality & forinstance does it have threaded texts!? Any info. gratefully recieved - especially re time it takes to send text message.
January 23rd, 2008 at 7:29 pm
I discovered a very reliable threaded SMS client for Pocket PC Phone. It handles both square and rectangular displays. It has some good configuration options for the display and has an excellent popup notification functionality too.
http://www.pocket-sms.com
Downsides are that it only runs on WM 5.0 or better and the license needs to be activated.
Otherwise, a nice simple application which is not so hot on graphics and presentation but has good functionality/setup opions.
January 24th, 2008 at 10:06 pm
hi, has anyone tried this with the E61i? and has it worked well?
February 8th, 2008 at 7:26 am
hi, bought this through the website, waited a couple of days for the program to arrive (some anxious moments there!) but it is now working beautifully on my N6121. highly recommend this.
March 13th, 2008 at 4:56 am
It’s also possible to view sms and phone logs threaded by contacts via web. Check this service http://www.bloove.com
