I want to know if my unbranded Italian/European NOKIA E61 will finely work in US.

Your question is a bit off topic… but OK. The E61 is a Quad Band device which works great in the US and most other countries with support for GSM or 3G services.

I am wondering if it will do 3G on 1900/850 i have a E61 but in the states i just can’t take advantage of Cingulars 3g.
Nokia’s site says its just 3gpp release 99 but nothing about the 3g on it.
Any info would be of great help.

Raj: I don’t think we’ll be seeing Stateside 3G with this one, especially not Cingular’s HSDPA. Quad-band will work fine, just like the E61/E62, but the phone only supports WCDMA 3G, which is a foreign 3G network. That sucks too; I don’t see why Nokia refuses to put US-3G-compatible radios in their devices, it certainly isn’t any more difficult. And since Cingular is getting a contract with Nokia for the E62/”E62i”, they should demand a HSDPA radio in the devices. Certainly it would benefit both companies for this! Perhaps the problem doesn’t lie with Nokia but with Cingular, who is trying to control the devices that are HSDPA compatible. Very bizarre…

Hi, i have been thinking of getting an E serious phone. but i am always put off by the fact that people point out the Symbian phones are slow (not as responsive as the WM5). it even takes quite a while for the msg program to start up. i had a N-gage(1st gen) before, and it was slow.
what do you guys make of that problem?

Well the reply above has certainly taken the E61i off of my “next phone” list. I just cant justify spending that much (no matter how nice the Nokia’s are) and NOT have it be 3G compatible here in the states. That REALLY disappoints me.
Does the 3G radio in the E61i work with ANY stateside 3G network (T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, etc)?

Thanks for info. I know when i’m in europe the e61 is just smoking on 3g. It does sux that the junk phones like Treo 750 support 3g dual mode 1900/850/2100 yet Nokia doesn’t
bother to put in this chipset.
Oh well! hopefully the E61i’s performance is better than the E61.

Cameron: I know what you mean, it is very frustrating to not have 3G when the network is readily available in our area. But Cingular’s EDGE service is not terrible; it’s actually quite satisfactory for mobile browsing. With an EDGE connection, the problem with mobile browsing becomes the screen size and interface rather than the connection speed. Now I’m not saying I wouldn’t LOVE an HSDPA E61, but I am extremely satisfied with mine using simply EDGE. The WiFi balances the problem greatly; I have a WiFi network at home and one in my office, so 90% of my day I am using a high-speed WiFi network. The times in between, EDGE really does suffice.
For all intents and purposes, WCDMA = UTMS. UTMS is the actual 3G platform but WCDMA is the air interface or network that it utilizes in most of the world, including the European market. HSDPA is another UTMS interface that actually is “the next step” from WCDMA, sometimes called 3.5G, as it’s a more advanced network than WCDMA. So really, depending on how you look at it, Cingular is ahead of the curve and we should be “lucky” to have the latest and greatest in a sense, but obviously we’re restricted to using ghetto Windows Mobile devices. Ironic, eh?
So AFAIK, the WCDMA 3G radio in the E61i will not work with any other stateside carriers like Verizon/Sprint/T-Mo. T-Mobile uses the same GSM/GPRS/EDGE/possibly HSDPA frequencies as Cingular, and Verizon/Sprint use CDMA/EV-DO and it’s variants as their high-speed platform.

Yu: I’ve used Windows Mobile devices for years, and I can categorically say the E61 is NO slouch in performance when compared to ANY WM device. In fact, it’s like a dream come true for me. I use and abuse my E61 daily and it is stable, fast, and a joy to use. I’ve NEVER used a WM device that gave me such a feeling. Sure, the hardware specs in many WM devices surpass that of the E61’s, but you have to remember the crummy platform running on it. Windows Mobile is a memory hog, very inefficient with it’s memory handling, never closing programs (why do you have to run a task manager and kill processes manually - this should NOT be Windows XP!), etc.
Having used Windows Mobile for years and now found S60v3/E61, I am never EVER switching back.

One more thing about HSDPA/UTMS/WCDMA:
Since HSDPA is en evolution of WCDMA, it’s actually backwards-compatible in a sense. Meaning, you can use HSDPA devices on a WCDMA/UTMS network. However the reverse is not true - you can’t use WCDMA devices on an HSDPA network. See this page for more info: http://full-speed.org/archives/2006/06/28/hsdpa_vs_umts.php
So that makes it even more frustrating that the E61i doesn’t feature an HSDPA radio. If it had one it could work on all UTMS networks, period.

That blog article mostly just regurgitated a Wikipedia article that may or may not be accrurate. I know for a fact that in the Seattle market, Cingular has a mix of UMTS and HSDPA phones rolled out, and both work equally well in their HSDPA areas, just that the HSPDA capable phones can transfer data faster. Since most providers are offering a mix of phones using both 3G technologies, both UMTS and HSDPA will be supported for the forseeable future. It’s not like Cingular or Vodafone is suddenly going to shut off UMTS and leave customers that bought a N73 from Vodafone or a Samsung ZX10 from Cingular hanging.
Also, I think the main reason for Nokia’s lack of tri-band US-compatible 3G radios is the patent licensing troubles going on with Qualcomm right now. I think Nokia is concerned that a model shipped with a US-capable 3G radio might be subject to legal action from Qualcomm if the negotiations continue to deteriorate between the two companies.

Does the E61i have spell check? I know it’s a funny question but I hate not having spellcheck for email. This is such a business directed device I have a hard time writing important work email on here.
Also will we be able to check more then 2 email address automaticaly and in intervals of less then 30 minutes???

Very informative!!! You are right though about EDGE, when it is working it really is acceptable as far as typical web-browsing is concerned. Its just annoying that the technology is THERE for high-speed (I’ve tested out the 3G on the Blackjack and its pretty impressive…mobile speed test from DSLreports shows very nice speeds) but certain phones just cant use it.
The number of unsecured wireless networks in the area should be evident enough of the usefulness of the E61i….I’ll keep it in mind in about 6 months

So has anyone done a E61 to E61i comparison? Yeah we know the camera is there on the E61i but performance, keyboard feel, build feel? I hate the back battery cover, i don’t know about the rest of u guys but it sounded so tinny and plastic feeling that it would, that i put in a piece of paper between the battery and the cover and now the e61 feels solid.
Anyone of you guys who have purchase the new E61i and have the E61 please report back to us !

Raj: I did a quick comparison and the E61i is slighty faster than the E61. I didn’t have time to test everything, but the overall performance is somewhat better. For instance, selecting “New SMS” frome the Home screen is a lot faster and when it comes to WiFi, the E61i is simply A LOT faster - both regular surfing on connecting to hotspots.
The keyboard is also better, more space between the buttons increases the overall typing speed (I’m writing this on my E61i). The battery cover is oh-so-metal, you just can’t compare it with the old one. Actually, I would say that the back of phone is the most sexiest part.

E61 is the best thing since sliced bread, but until the day Nokia gets around releasing an E61 which has a front cam, a mini USB and 3.5mm jack, no upgrade for me.
And now that they know not only business folks are into E61, things they could improve:
* the Music Player buttons should be controlled through a 4-way nav button; the current config with the play & ff buttons arranged vertically is not intuitive at all
* the ability to edit Artist & other info on downloaded songs
* dual stereo speaker
* bluetooth transfer file should be able to be moved to user-specified folder
* should have Windows Media Player pre-installed, current RealPlayer does not play anything at all!!
* the voice recorder button should not be on the side where it could be accidentally switched on so easily by accident
* should have Opera single-column browser & GPS module plus Google Maps pre-installed
Not too much to ask, right?

Did they fix the email functionality of Messaging? Especially the crap IMAP support? Or show-stopper memory leak if you use the auto-check/pull functionality?
I like the E61, but I found that I cannot use it as I intended, and the feature set would suggest. Not sure that I can buy another S60 device given the issues with the E61.
Maybe there will be another firmware update, but I’ve kind of accepted suboptimal functionality until I replace the phone

I’m using T-Mobile here in US and since I’m not a heavy data user, I’ll be fine without 3G…beside, WiFi is everywhere nowadays.

Avoid that phonesource-usa.com — they sell Asian models only. Less than a day after I bought mine, they lowered the price by $100 and wont even give me a free case. They told me “you are an early adopter so you should expect to pay more” — but $100 in the SAME DAY? Good god, it’s not like we’re trading commodities here. Because their site says “All Sales are Final”, the credit card companies have their hands tied. Complete and total BS. I am selling the phone on eBay out of principle because every time I look at it I think of those scammers.

Just picked up my E61i today… Luuuv it…. Bought mine in NYC at ExoticPhone.com. Advertised at $525 but one of the guys (Bill) gave me another $25 off! I went into their office (in the flower district) in Manhattan to purchase and pick up (hence the additional discount). I live in Manhattan so that was easy for me so I’m not sure what they’re shipping charges are.
I found it easier to contact them by email since for some reason they were not picking up the phone the couple of times I called… Came with a 256mb microSD card and the keypad was English! Already had a couple of 2Gig cards at home…
User Guide was not in English and the charger was European. The guys gave me a US adapter so that solved the charger problem (I believe they ship all US purchases with the US adapter. I printed the English User Guide pages I needed from Nokia’s site… All in all it was a pleasant experience and I would buy from them again.

What’s the difference between the different regions models anyway?
I saw on a couple sites that said different regions packaged with different sizes of SD cards but what exactly are those regions?
Also, whats the difference between each keyboard? So far we know there’s a Norwegian keypad and i guess an Asian version….so how many more are there?

i think the asia-pacific version comes with 256MB card with preloaded Golf 2.0 games, Worldmate, Chinese dictionary
the asian keyboard has a special chinese character key to the lowest right corner.

WHAT?! i just ordered from phone source a day ago! I called this morning and spoke to a chick that sounded like she was trying sooooo bad to hurry and get off the phone with me, but she said that they only sell english qwerty versions. So my mind has been at ease until I read the above. And yes i see the price has been lower..but then the shipping is raised higher as well. How does that work out? Yes please enlighten me on the keypad…what’s wrong with it? asian characters?! I asked the lady specifically before they shipped my order if it was an english keyboard!

I’ve been covering this blog since I was in HK last week! I searched high and low out of every shop in HK but to no avail! I even went into those “parallel import” shops and still nothing! Glad to see there are units coming into the US now. Too bad there’s no HSDPA yet.
Quick Q. Can anyone help to verify the language packs you have on your phone? Since I travel to Asia quite often and sometimes need to view Asian characters, Asia character support would be great to have. Most of the US phones are crippled to only English/Spanish/French. Help anyone? Thanks!!

Side Point: I use the Nokia Bluetooth HS-12W headset with my E61i and my phone calls are very clear… FM Radio stations sound excellent also. I use my iPod primarily for my music and video so haven’t fully tested the audio on the paired E61i and HS-12W. So far no complaints though…
HS-12W with it’s FM radio works for me when I’m walking around (music pauses when call comes in) and when I’m sitting on a plane (travel quite a bit for work) I usually switch to the iPod.

Dan: they do have different labeling. Some phones have the “Made in Finland” label, others say “Made by Nokia” (meaning made in China).

I received mine today via Vodafone’s business services. I’ve been hounding our account manager since I found about it. According to him, it was only put onto their allocation system yesterday, though it’s not on the website yet. I didn’t receive a memory card, just a basic handsfree set, charger and e-series cd rom. Due to the network config at work, I have to use BlackBerry connect, but they haven’t updated it for the E61i so can’t comment on email.

it’s a no-brainer for me to choose E61i over N95:
1. Huge freakin 2.8″ landscape screen with 16.7Millions colors! (I watch lots of torrent TV shows when travelling + good for blogging and emailing)
2. Duracell-on-steroid battery life compares to N95
3. Fast Qwerty Keyboard (ultra comfy and nice too!)
4. 6300-like super sleek, slim and minimal design
5. USD260 cheaper than N95
6. Although camera is not good but still very usable and practical for quick shot and it’s fast with minimal shutter lag unlike n95
7. Builtin QuickWord and QuickSheet
8. No GPS (this is not a feature but seriously I don need it in a phone)
9. The symbian OS is far more snappier compares to Windows Mobile (sorry this is not to compares to N95)
10. And finally, it’s an ‘i’ version of nokia phone meaning its the improved version from an older version where most things (bugs, functionalities, etc) are already sorted out and fixed. Its too painful for me if I buy N95 now and then they release N95i in few months time…insane!
E61i is a must buy for those who want a bigger screen phone with amazing battery life and nice design

hey, just got my e61i yesterday. despite its size, it still feels lighter than my old n70. still getting used to the keyboard - but i’m already typing as fast as i used to. is there a list of recommended programs and add ons for the e61i anywhere, or some kind of recommended to do list for new users of the e61i like me?
on another note - haven’t seen any covers for the e61i yet - the stores in singapore still only stock e61 items. thickness issue there, so i guess i will have to wait.

Two quick questions here:
Nokia’s N95 (and E90) claim a WCDMA 2100 MHz (HSDPA) radio which, after reading Jesse’s and Jim Jonzes 3G/UMTS insight, suggests that Cingular’s “3G” network is compatible with a WCDMA 2100Mhz device, according to Nokia’s website. I was previously under the understanding that Cingular only offer their 3G service @ the frequency WCDMA 1900 MHz and this is where the compatibility issues occur. Reviewing Samsungs Blackjack specs on the Cingular site (may) confirm this. HSDPA does not mean universal (downgrade) compatibility afterall? It is still frequency specific/

hey everyone! i got mine about a week ago since reading this blog! i LOVE the phone over my crappy VX6700 on Verizon. Yes, I switched to Cingular (GSM) since I travel overseas so much. I got the Asian version via ebay for (then) $475. Last I checked, it was $417USD. That’s a crazy price if I’ve ever seen one.
I just took a bunch of screen shots of what I have installed along with some shots of the Chinese dictionary options if anyone’s interested.

Hi,
I have had my E61i for a few weeks now and my only gripe has been battery life, yet everyone else seems to think that the E61i is great when it comes to battery. I am running Blackberry and a Bluetooth headset most of the time and seem to be lucky if I get over 36 hrs of life.
Am I expecting too much?

If there was a memory card supplied with your phone, the Blackberry Connect install pack is on it, there is also a how to guide available, probably available from the Nokia website.

wifi set scan mode and if you move around in a places with a lot of wireless AP it will kill your phone in short time.

The E61i APAC version has the same lousy, ugly fonts that its predecessor had, rather than the good-looking European/traditional Nokia font, thanks to its support for the Chinese language. I hate it so much. I wonder why they have to push Chinese support in Asian countries where a Chinese-speaking population doesn’t exist. I managed to upgrade my E61 software to the European version, after coming across a site that explained how, and it made a whole lot of a difference, with the menu/messaging fonts looking so much more appealing and attractive. However, by doing so, I did away with whatever warranty was left on my phone. It didn’t matter much to me then, as I had just three or four months left on my warranty, but I can’t take that risk with a spanking-new phone. It’s really bad, because I like this phone so much, and I’m so eager to get one, but the Chinese support/ put me off. It might mean nothing to most, but for me, a good-looking interface matters a lot, and that covers all, from icons to fonts.

fooled, the mp3 player had equalizer ( bass, treble , everythin), but its certainly of no use, as even with the wired headsets the sound is very poor. I tried with nokia hs47 headsets which supports stereo playback but the output
was a real shit. These nokia people has been playin games with my heart.
Plz do let me know if NOKIA E61i has good mp3 support, how good its sound
is as compared to ipod. Please do let me know about the same, i’ll b really thankful to you.

Just got a brand new North American version of E61i, it is great in most aspects, except that often times, I need to read (not necessary input) Chinese emails, simplified or traditional does not matter. Does anyone know of means to accomplish this, thanks in advance.

I just called both the Hong Kong and Beijing Nokia hotline to see about being able to view Chinese character messages on my new US bought Nokia e61i phone. Both customer service reps told me that this can’t be done. I know it can be done from what I heard from someone who works at Nokia but I have not found out how. Very frustrating.
