Nokia & iSync

It's not often you feel the Nokia - Apple love.

As us Apple users know, Nokia support for Mac OSX is… how should I put this… "not as prioritized as for Windows" ;-)

I was pleasantly surprised to see that Nokia now offers iSync plugins for a all Eseries devices :-) More information here.

Thanks to everyone who emailed me about this!

Ironic: the Nokia download page doesn’t render properly in Safari!

  2. Holger Says:

The current version of iSync (Version 2.4 (501.2)) supports at least my E61 without any 3rd party plugin. See http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/isync/devices.html for the list of supported devices.

  3. Bernd Says:

today i will get my new e61i, and than do not tricky Things to get Isync Support. Thanks Nokia :-)

  4. Treo Says:

Those iSync liks to Nokia don’t lead anywhere!

  5. macalex Says:

Since MacOS 10.4.9 update there is a native support for Nokia E series.

  6. Jason Says:

I saw that myself a few days back, but rather than going with the Nokia plugins, which seem to be one per device, I opted for the plugins at S60 Themes, which consists of 3 plugins, one for the N-series, one for the E-series and one for the remaining S40 devices. There are iSync 2.3 and 2.4 versions of the download.

While the E61i isn’t covered in there, I’m sure there will be an update.

Either way, I’m covered with my shiny new N95… Which makes my wife happy, since she’s getting the N73 ME.

  7. Christopher Says:

Has anyone been able to pair their E series with address book and use the SMS functions of phone dial through address book? For some reason my E62 does not want to play nicely with this. It works with iSync just fine. I am using 10.4.9 and native iSync support (no plugins or other software).

  8. Jason Says:

SMS functions through address book have never functioned, IIRC.

Novamedia has an address book plugin for 6.50 euro though. No idea how well it works.

  9. Serv Says:

Plugins ?! My recently bought e61 syncs out of the box with my macbook…no plugins required.

  10. Matze Says:

And you’re still screwed with OSX 10.3. My G4 700 won’t do 10.4.9 so has nayone been lucky with synchronising it with OS10.3.x???

  11. Gerhard Says:

    @Matze:
    Sure?
My G3 450 runs on 10.4.7. I have no doubt it will run 10.4.9.

  12. Dan Says:

Back when I first got my e61, I downloaded some third-party plug-in (I believe I found the link on this site) to allow me to use iSync. Now that OSX and iSync are compatible with the e61 on their own, should I do something to change the interaction (e.g., remove my e61 from the iSync panel and then add it back again)? Or should I just keep syncing it the way I have been, which usually works fine but has occasional glitches?

  13. Robert Blair Says:

Agree that E61 does not work with Apple Address book send SMS and make call SMS feature. I suspect that there is a bug in the Bluetooth related code. ISync works well though, using the new Nokia ISync plug-ins. Strange situation.

  14. Trevor Elbourne Says:

Has anyone got the iSync plugins from the Nokia website to work?!

When I installed the Nokia iSync plugin for the E61i, iSync came up with a message saying that the plugin does not work with the version of iSync I am using (Version 2.4 (501.2))?? Even though the Nokia website says OS X 10.4.9 is supported??

    Can anyone shed some light?

  15. Trevor Elbourne Says:

Solved the problem with the Nokia iSync plugins.

Running the package installer caused the plugin to be installed in:

    /Library/PhonePlugins

For some reason, iSync didn’t like it here. So I moved it to:

    /Applications/iSync.app/Contents/PlugIns/ApplePhoneConduit.syncdevice/Contents/PlugIns

    And all now works.

  16. SHAN Says:

MY MAC HAS A VERSION OF 10.3.9, and i just bout E61, is there any plugin available for download with having to update Mac OS to latewst 10.4.9.

  17. Michel Lu Says:

Installed isync plugin for my E61i and everything seemed to work well except that the sync progress bar never completes and nothing gets updated on my phone.

    Any assistance please?

*Trevor, I don’t seem to have an “iSync.app” folder in Applications. Where or how else do I do this?

    Appreciate the help.

  18. Dirk Says:

To locate the iSync.app, right click on iSync in the applications folder, and select “Show Package Contents”

excuse my n00b question but i have a macbook and my mometary motorola L7 does isynch with no plugin help so i guess that next week when i get my nokia E61i it will be directly recognise in the apple isynch also.

i need to know the following information please: to me iSync is only a app to backup adresses / contacts but it isnt a complete phone tools program that lets you play around with all the files inside your memory card or even set up the phone as a modem, like the nokia phone tools would, right?

  21. James Says:

anyone figure out a way to get Apple Address Book *groups* to sync to an E61?

  22. Michael Says:

    Hi,

Could anyone pls help me ? I have the same problem as trevor. I downloaded the plugin for e61i and altyhough I have isync 2.4, it says I need to upgrade in order to install the plugin. No update or upgrade is available and I couldn’t do what trevor described.
    Thanks

  23. Dylan Says:

Okay, so I’ve just bought the E61i and love it. The problem is that Contacts will not Sync with it. Calendar Syncs fine and the Nokia Device Browse is also working great. I just can’t work out what is going on with Contacts. I’ve tried moving the plugin folder, as suggested above, but it doesn’t solve the problem.

Has anyone come across this problem?

    Thanks,
    Dylan.

  24. Dylan Says:

I’d like to add more information to my post above:

    1. iCal is Syncing but every time I sync it creates a new entry on the phone - this means that if I sync 5 times, I get 5 calendar entries that are exactly the same.

    2. Todo’s - Same as above. 5 syncs = 5 todos on my phone

    3. Contacts - If I add 4 contacts to the phone and sync, those 4 contacts are apparently saved to my Mac. However, I can’t find them in the Address Book. If I change the contact on my phone and resync, the computer knows they have changed and will tell me. However again, the change is not written to the address book on my Mac. It’s almost as if the phone is syncing to some other address database on my computer

Again, no sync error is ever reported on the phone.

Is this something to do with the PC Sync profile settings? I can’t edit these on the phone however. Should I create a new profile?

Is there a detailed log file stored some where that I can look at? The log files on my Mac and e61i report no errors but also give no detail.

    Thanks in advance,
    Dylan.

  25. Sara Says:

    Tip:
I also had the please upgrade iSync message even though I was up to date. Turns out iSync needs to be in the application folder (and not in a subfolder of this folder or anywhere else). Just drag it back and it will install (or at least it did for me)

  26. Barry Says:

I have the same sync problem for contacts. they do get updated only the 1st sync. whatever happens after, ( I created new contacts on the mac ) they won’t go to my phone, nore do deletions on the mac. other direction works with adds changes and deletions.

    helllllp?

  27. AHH Says:

I can’t even add my E61i as a device to iSync 2.4 (”This device is not supported by iSync”).
    Any new ideas on this?

I tried moving the plugin to /Applications/iSync.app/Contents/PlugIns/ApplePhoneConduit.syncdevice/Contents/PlugIns
as someone suggested above. No difference.

    Please help!

  28. AHH Says:

OK… now I’ve managed to add the device to iSync, using the plug-in I downloaded directly from Nokia rather than the one I had got from some other site.

Unfortunately, I get an error when I sync and no data transfers:

    Sunday, 26 August 2007 6:53 PM
[E Series] An unexpected error occured.
    Device “E Series” synchronization failed

Any idea how to fix this?

  29. Robert Says:

Bought new iMac any synched it with iCal. Only “private” calendar items show up in iCal. Does anyone experience similar problems?

  30. Robert Says:

  31. Scott Perry Says:

The links to nokia no longer work… is there a mirror?

  32. admin Says:

    Hi Scott,
I updated the link - it is working now.
    Cheers

I get the same error. My contacts synced fine, but my iCal did not sync.

Anyone care to shed some light on this matter? Please?

  34. Paul Says:

Here’s how it worked for me:
    (1) back up your calendars (Menu: File-> Back up database)
    (2) Delete all calendars
    (3) restore calendars from backup (Menu: File -> Revert to Database backup)
    (4) sync

  35. George Says:

works for me! just downloaded the nokia isync plugin, installed, fired up isync.

  36. Zoe Says:

Have just switched from windows to mac. Had been using pc suite to sync with e61i but now I’m stumped. Downloaded plugin from Nokia site - seems ok. Paired phone and mac - seems ok. Start up isync and it always says it can’t find a device. I’m obviously missing something here - anyone help???

  37. NickD Says:

Somewhat different topic question: Does anyone know if there are any mail programs for symbian on my E61 that will sync with the mac mail program?

    Thanks!

  38. admin Says:

    Hi NickD
The native email program on the Nokia e61 works with Mac Mail.
    incoming mail server: mail.mac.com
    outgoing mail server: smtp.mac.com
    Cheers
    Ed

  39. NickD Says:

I think I mean the apple mail software that comes on my G4. Sorry to abuse the nomenclature.

I’m looking to get it to save messages I sent on the e61 and then upload them to my sent folder on the mac, and mark as unread the ones I’ve dealt with back and forth, etc. Via isync.

Is that possible with the native software on the e61? I also was hoping it would have an update or that there would be an alternative mail program that would be more full-featured, for instance I would like it to auto-fill email addresses it’s seen before or that it can identify from my address book.

    thanks!

    Nick

I was just given a Nokia e61 (left my phone on pub trans) and can’t get my Powerbook 10.4.11 running iSync 2.4 to sync up at all. I’ve successfully paired my computer with the phone but nothing syncs — message below:

    Connection to the phone failed.
Please make sure that your phone is turned on. If this error occurs again, please restart your phone.
    Device “Leon’s ear” synchronization failed

I restarted the phone, i’ve restarted iSync, I’ve done it many times and nothing.

    any ideas?

  41. hakintosh Says:

I am having the same problem, and it’s reallllly frustrating. Did anyone manage to find a solution? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! I’m using PowerBook G4 running Mac OS X Version 10.4.11, and I’m trying to use iSync to synchronize my Contacts with the Nokia E90. The error I’m getting is:

    ‘[hakintosh] An unexpected error occured.
    Device “hakintosh” synchronization failed’

After the first failed attempt, this is what I’ve retried several times:

    1) Unpair the Mac from the E90
    2) Remove the E90 from iSync
    3) Restart both devices
    4) Add the Mac as a Bluetooth paired device on E90
    5) Set the E90 to auto-authorize all requests from the Mac
    5) Download E90 patch from [http://europe.nokia.com/A4299040] onto Mac, and run it.
    6) Go into iSync & add the E90 device
    7) Restart both devices again
    8) Ensure that Bluetooth is on for both devices
    9) Synchronize using iSync

    This is very disappointing…

    PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THX!!

  42. Greg Says:

I am connecting my E61i via USB cable.

Running 10.5.2 and all the other latest Apple stuff. G5 dual 2 GHz processor tower.
iSync preferences are merge the Mac and the phone. Calendar only. 1 week look back, 1 month look ahead.

Installed the Nokia plug-in… all good. iSync allowed me to add the Nokia device and then when I clicked Sync I got an alert from the phone that it was connecting and then a progress bar on the Mac that indicated that data was being transferred, confirmed by the Nokia (60 of 69) incremented read out and then BAM I get a System error message on the Nokia.
    The log file is unhelpful.

    Anybody have a similar issue?
    Thanks!!!

  43. Greg Says:

Oh, forgot to add the iSync message:

    Thursday, May 15, 2008 1:22
[Nokia E61i] There was an error getting data from the phone. The synchronization may have been canceled on the phone.
    Device “Nokia E61i” synchronization failed.
