Improving Video Quality On Nokia E61
Thinking about starting to watch videos on the Nokia E61 but don't much about the subject?
Do you already watch videos but are not satisfied with the quality?
I've got a great article on this topic to recommend.
The author tested specific parts of certain video clips that were prone to distortion, and graded each part on a scale from 1 to 10 for picture quality and smoothness of motion.
In all he tested well over 100 different optimization settings. Based on the result he created optimal SUPER settings available for download.
Read the article, I promise that you will learn a lot. Especially in regards to tweaking video quality.
Great article Nico~!

E61’s beautiful screen is great in showing video clips. It is great that the author of the article conducts such a thorough testing to find the magic configuration for video conversion.
I have used my E61 for viewing video for more than 6 months. However, I am using a different way for conversion. I use Cinematize (http://www.miraizon.com/products/products.html) to do the conversion directly from DVD and use DVD Region Free (http://www.dvdidle.com/dvd-region-free.htm) to take care of the CSS protection. Actually, before I settle in this combination, I have tried over 10 different software combination and found that this solution provides the best video quality while keeping the conversion task simple. The drawback of this solution is that it costs money!

I must have a super duper E61, cos i encoded my vids to 320×240, 450kbps video, 20-25fps, 128kbps audio using divx encoder, and it plays fine, no frame drops and is great. Any less that 20fps and i find video unwatchable.
I use Divx mobile, the latest version is fantastic. Im suprised to read in the article that it is sub standard.
I use Jetaudio’s media player which also converts a variety of formats including mkv (h264), the media player part of it fantastic, not fancy like kmplayer but is easy to use and plays back x264 HD like no other with coreavc plugged in.
Back to the E61, if you have downlaod avi’s, simply set encoder settings to how i have described above and your done, this produces a file size of around 70mb for 25mins. If your watching cartoon vids such as south park, you can up the fps to 25.
if you want to convert a dvd to watch on the E61 with jetaudio, you need the pay for version but thats not to hard to get round ;). Select the vob that contains the main film and convert. Otherwise convert Vob’s to mpeg2 losslessly using vob2mpg or simular and use jetaudio to do the rest. If your have trouble opening vobs directly from the disc, use dvdshrink to rip it to your drive. Converting Vobs to mpeg2 is very quick and dvd shrink takes about 5mins on todays machines.
Things work best if you keep the AR, ie if its 4:3, keep it the way. Luckily 320×240 is 4:3. For 16:9 vids, i advise keepping that ratio, for a start it will look right when your watching it and the encoding process is faster.

I myself use realplayer after i encoded with “VIDDYUP!”. This is for MAC users only, but produces very high quality videos.

I don’t understand his problem with SmartMovie either. I use SmartMovie’s converter software and the videos play very smoothly on my E62. I’ve been a happy camper ever since I got my hands on SmartMovie. I even convinced my cousin to do the same and he loves putting movie trailers on his E62. They play just fine without framedrops at all. Go figure?

i found an application called Sothink DVD ripper. you can rip an entire dvd in just minutes and includes a preset parameters especially for s60 third edition devices. furthermore, you can set the videoz size, audio quality and so on. give it a try.

I’m with Desi. I often convert and watch 24 and Lost episodes (for instance) using Smatmovie and the quality is very good. Whenever I want to make a “mere cellphone usere” envy I play these videos on my E62
I also convert full movies in AVI format through Smartmovie converter achieving the same results.
Coouldn’t figure the reason that drove the article’s author to the negative conclusion regarding to Smartmovie… Personalyy, I think video playback in 3gp via Realplayer just sucks.
Just reporting my experience - of course.

I use Videora for Ipod Converter to convert videos for my e61. Its free, its fast, very simple, and plays smoothly with Real Player. The default codec h.264 cannot be played on the E61, so I use the MPEG4 codec. Suprisingly, the e61 can handle the 768kbps bitrate without frame drops on Real Player (I tested my converstion with the Spiderman 3 Crane Scene).

Oh.. i may just add a little bit more about Videora. I was using Super before but I could not encode 16:9 videos and preserve the aspect ratio on the encoded file. Hence, my search for a better free video converter, and Videora was it. I preserves the AR and watch widescreen videos smoothly.

I agree with dansus, I use Super encoder and Smartmovies and I watch movies at 568Kbps bitrates and 25fps with no frame drops, so I have to disagree with the author of the above article. The E61 is a sweet video player. Just ask all my envious friends:)

There are official Nokia specs, they say frame rate should be 15fps, i see no reason for setting it to lower value. I convert movies with ffmpeg to mp4 container and xvid codec, 300-400kbps video bitrate seems enough for 320×240 screen

Hey
Thx for a great blog
Just wanted to tell you guys that Slysoft’s CloneDVD Mobile makes PERFECT movies from DVDs.
I’ve had my clone-package for several years now - and it is still in my opinion the best movieconverter.
Just had to say that

After countless hours trying fruitlessly to come up with a way to put video on my E61 using my mac at home, I’m amazed at how simple it was in the end.
All I did was use the videos i had converted using Handbrake (I used the same conversions I do for transferring movies to my Ipod) instead of dragging the finished product over to my Ipod library, I dragged it over to the video folder of my E61’s memory card, using the cable supplied. I did this for Ever After (the movie) and the process took about nine minutes to copy over to that folder. Then, after disconnecting the phone, I simply went into the folder on my phone, double clicked on the movie icon and it started playing (perfectly I might add) on Real Player. And every mac user knows how easy it is to convert a DVD using that Handbrake! And since I figured this out at 2am I don’t believe that brilliant thoughts don’t occur with lack of sleep! Hope this helps somebody! This is the link to download Handbrake: http://handbrake.m0k.org/

Hi Nair,
I have spent the day playing with Super and Real Player on my e62. I think the problem you have with the pic staying still and audio continuing is the frame rate is too high. I was experimenting with a sample video clip and found that it only worked at 5.994 or 6.25 fps. After I converted clips to those settings the freeze up stopped.
