My Nokia E65 Red housing which I mentioned in an earlier post arrived. Thinking that the transformation would be as easy as when I tore apart my Nokia E61 and changed the original casing to a blue third party casing, I wasted no time and started to dismantle the Nokia E65.
The first two steps are pretty easy. Step one is to remove and replace the battery cover (duh~!).
Even step two is more or less easy. You need to pop open the front face plate. Just insert a knife or something else with a thin, flat surface and pry it open (gently!).
But here is where it gets tricky. *Very* tricky. Of course I started to try to remove the third, middle section with no prior knowledge regarding how the piece is connected.
After about an hour I gave up and looked at the Nokia E65 dis-assembly manual online - that’s when I decided to change my mind. Instead of making it all red (and risking permanently damaging the device) I decided to compromise.
There are some very complicated steps involved in removing the middle face plate. I would NOT recommend anyone doing this. Reading the comments from the original post, other modders (Cyberdoggie) has run in to the same problem.
If you want to mod your Nokia E65 I suggest you make the device Red AND Mocca. A one of a kind Hybrid Nokia E65.

I’m a huge fan of the mix, Ed. And it’s truly one-of-a-kind. You should try to find an appropriate theme to complete it. Something like a hershey’s theme or chocolate covered strawberries. A bit on the questionable side, maybe, but good for pictures, nontheless.

I plan on getting an E70 soon, and painting it in a Desert pattern, rather than the Woodland pattern, for those times that I’m deployed.
I came upon to know recently that to add a new to-do or note item in my Nokia E70 you have to just open to-do or note and start typing you’ll be surprised to know that a new item has been opened and your typed key strokes are there. Quite time saving isn’t it?

Alex just search ebay for e65. There’s plenty of vendors with new cases for sale.

i have the black original nokia cover which i have used to
replace the tranditional red housing, however i havent been game enough to
change over the main casing and void the warranty. It took me a few days to build up the
courage to rip off the slide cover.
So i currently have a hybrid black and red E65 (probably the only one in Australia)
very happy with this model phone, havent had any problems with the OS, although i
was slightly disheartened to have to dl and install a 3rd party automatic key lock app.
Nokia must know that these things dont integrate with the phone as smoothly as their firmware,
but apart from that very pleased.
also willing to trade a great mini pool game for a worldmate 2007 activation code.

Have been a user of the E65 for 9months now and am very pleased. Of course with everyday use, and actually leaving the phone out in the sun, the paint actually started to PEEL off. Very annoying. However, I got hold of a new casing and decided to replace it myself. I agree, there are some very complicated steps in order to disassemble the phone successfully and then reassemble it they way it should be but has worked out great for me. Took about an hour in total, looking through different guides on the net etc but in the end I’ve ended up with a brand-new looking E65 for a mere £10.

Unfortunately the video has also now gone at Nokia’s request.
However having just changed the back I reckon it’s actually easier than it looks.
The problem is 4 screws are easy to get to but the one at the top is obscured by the slide. To access it you need to move the slide aside.
The way to do it is like this. Looking at the side of the phone with the front cover off you’ll see two steel rods that the slide moves up and down on. It’s simple to push these up and out of the housing (with a small screwdriver). This frees up the front of the phone (screen etc) which you can lift and move down slightly. You can now access the top screw.
When you take out the long rods two plastic “buffers” will fall out each side. One (on my phone white) goes at the bottom of the rod and the other smaller black one goes at the top. Make a note of these as you take the rod out and make sure you don’t lose them…
Once the top screw is out you can unclip the back carefully bearing in mind there are still wires attached (sim card/memory card holder and the side buttons).
The sim card wires are easy to deal with by unclipping the tiny circuit board but the side buttons are trickier. The electronics themselves behind the buttons appear to be stuck with tape into the phone but pull out with care. The plastic buttons themselves had me stumped until I realised they actually come out through the side of the back case rather than through the inside. If you push a small screwdriver in next to the buttons you’ll be able to unlatch them and once one button is pulled through the others are easier.
Putting it back together is much easier and is fairly obvious. Make sure you get the little plastic buffers onto the rods properly noting they have a small stud on them that fits into a hole on the case.
Of course if you attempt this and brick your phone I don’t know ’nuffin’…
Forgot to mention you have to remember to transfer across the charging socket and microphone from the old case back to the new. If you don’t you lose the ability to speak with the phone. Ask me how I know… go on… ask me!!!
my e65’s mic hasnt been working ever since i tried to remove the face plate and replace it with the black one. not really sure what i was doing i thank ive now ruined a perfectly good phone?
your rocca is pretty cool done but it would be more cool that you can do the same thing on e90, i have e90 and i scratched it few times…. :((( but the phone is still pretty
and it would be a great thing that every e series have carbon or titane shell or mask for an option, i don’t speak english so good.:))

I read this before I attempted changing the whole housing. To your dismay, I DID IT SUCCESSFULLY WITHOUT A MANUAL OR INSTRUCTIONS! However I found it extremely frustrating. I did it in 20 minutes as well however I had to completely destroy my previous case and its other parts using scissors. I did it the unorthodox way though. After re-mending and putting the housing together over and over again the screen went blank but I fixed that up by re-connecting the parts. It is possible to do it. its not that risky. I have small hands though.. anyway I am really happy that I was able to change the whole face plate, not just the back and face. If you are going to do this you are risking the appearance of your new plate. my new housing is slightly scratched from prying it open over and over again however it looks great and works fine. email me at ‘emberm@hotmail.com’ if you want help!
