Must Have Software - Font Magnifier
One one of the most commonly asked question I receive is:
"How do I increase the font size on my Nokia E61?" or "How do I make the text in BlackBerry Connect larger?" I cannot tell you how often I receive that question.
An interesting tidbit is that there seem to be a large number of BlackBerry Connect users who are looking for this.
Anyway, up until now my response have been that certain isolated 3rd party applications such as Alon Contact Guide and RoadSync support increasing the text size. That was true until yesterday.
Today Psiloc released Font Magnifier a great application which lets you increase the font size on all applications.
As with all Psiloc's applications it is intuitive and easy to use. It lets you control the font size of all the installed fonts.
You use a slider to set the font size and then restart the device for the changes to be made. If you want, you can make the font size *REALLY LARGE*.
But the application is also capable of producing smaller but noticeable changes in font size.
By testing different font sizes you can find one that fits the application as well as is legible.

Font Magnifier is the answer for all of you who are looking to increase the font size of on your device.
As great as the application is it does seem to slow down the speed of the device a tiny bit. But if you are looking for a larger font size it is something you can live with.
I should note that there are hacks which lets you change your fonts on the device but as with all hacks you risk to damage your device so unless you like to live on the bleeding edge of technology don't try the hacks.

Personally, I don’t want the fonts any bigger. In fact, I’d LOVE for the fonts in many apps to be smaller. The email font size is ridiculously large; only being able to see 8 or 10 lines of text is almost unacceptable in my book. Ah well…
May 15th, 2007 at 12:39 pm
Hey guys, great page here. *thumbs up* I like your brown theme of the screenies, it looks like the original grey Nokia dots theme, but only brown. Where can I download it? Greetz,
May 15th, 2007 at 12:45 pm
That’s true…the screen is capable of displaying much more information than it does currently in email/sms mode.
Wish Nokia could add a font size option in a future firmware update
May 15th, 2007 at 1:09 pm
Wow - for those of us with poor eye sight, this app is a invaluable! Thanks for the tip, just bought a copy.
It does require a lot of trial & error trying to work out which font effects which part of the UI. Would be nice if the developers provided a key. (eg Nokia Sans 60 is used for titles etc).
Jesse - it looks like the sliders can reduce the font sizes considerably, as well as enlarge them.
May 15th, 2007 at 3:33 pm
I agree with Jesse, I’d love to see something that makes the text much smaller. When reading emails I find it quite annoying that it fits so few words per line. Forwarded emails are horrific to read.
May 16th, 2007 at 12:22 am
I’m with Jesse.
May 16th, 2007 at 1:19 am
Will this also work on the other E-series (e.g. E65)?
May 16th, 2007 at 2:58 am
hi all,
First of all THANKS to all of you
In future version, i’m going to update sliders with font names to something more useful. e.g. Messaging fonts , Menu fonts e.t.c.
Your feed back regarding which fonts are used in which applications would be really helpful. New ideas are also welcome.
Thanks

I don’t have any problem with the txt size…
I think it’s great though in the browser I’ve set the zoom at 75%
so I’m also with Jesse.
May 16th, 2007 at 3:24 am
[...] Here is what Ed says. And here’s Zack’s post. I think it’s great that these apps are Not originally installed but are available because this keeps things clean, leaving more memory for the user who doesn’t need it. However there is one problem about this. It should be easy for people who Do need this type of application to be able to find it. (well, that’s what we’re here for ) [...]
May 16th, 2007 at 5:52 am
This application is bugged unfortunately. After applying settings, the phone restarts with different settings for the fonts than the ones i had selected. This means they are either too small or too large to be of any use.
May 16th, 2007 at 7:33 am
Most of the default sizes of the E61 fonts used for the system are perfectly allright for me. The only font I find way too small is the one used for the details in Contacts. Telephone numbers are hardly readable, especially as no hyphens are allowed, and sometimes I have to go into Edit mode to read them properly. For these, magnifying would do a lot of good but I have not found out how to change them. Nokia Sans S60 and Nokia Sans TitleSmBd S60 affect selection keys and menu line fonts only, not the Contacts fonts. Any ideas ?
May 16th, 2007 at 8:42 am
Severin please try “Other fonts”.
May 16th, 2007 at 8:57 am
Apart from ALON Contact Guide, the latest version of Profimail (2.75) also supports font magnification.
May 16th, 2007 at 11:48 am
Hameed - Can you at least tell us what fonts control what function? That would be very helpful.
May 16th, 2007 at 1:38 pm
Hi Eric,
I have a general idea of which fonts are used where but i’m not 100% sure if its same for all phones. Thats why i asked me previous post about other’s experience regarding this.
But i’ll be doing some research on this as soon as i get some free-time.
Cheers
May 16th, 2007 at 2:04 pm
Hi, so this works “ok”, but seemed to need three hard boots per font change… Definitely thought I was going to have to do a low level reset on my e65.
I know it’s a symbian/s60 limitation so I can live with it, but a little more “warning” might have been nice.
Also, might be good to indicate what fonts are used where in the phone… e.g., SwissA is your email font for example… etcetc
Net: definitely worth $10.

I downloaded the trial version yesterday and today, I spent 10 minutes turning my phone on and off before it worked. It kept on telling me that the phone would not start and that I should contact the dealer. Before I buy the real thing, can anyone tell me if they have had this trouble and if so, what they did about it? Thanks.
May 17th, 2007 at 8:35 am
David could you tell device & firmware?
May 17th, 2007 at 10:42 pm
WOW!!! work on my E50.
May 18th, 2007 at 12:31 am
Nokia 6290 with latest formware installed. Only 2 weeks old. Having said that, by trial and error yeterday, I have found that by opening the flip, switching on and shutting the flip, the phone does boot up. If the flip is not shut, it doesn’t. This strongly suggests to me that there is an inherent problem with the phone which has nothing to do with the download.
May 18th, 2007 at 8:01 am
Those who’re using N75 with branded firmware (rest may too
)
please keep checking for new version on our website.
tnx
May 18th, 2007 at 11:09 am
can I use this on an E50?
May 18th, 2007 at 2:27 pm
yes it works on e50
May 19th, 2007 at 2:16 am
One more piece of advice please, Hameed. The 6290 has now been to a Nokia agent who needed to do a complete reset. Once again, it is working perfectly. Does the reset suggest to you that the introduction of Font Enlarger on this handset caused the problem because although I would love to have it back, I am frightened of going through this scenario all over again.
May 19th, 2007 at 4:09 am
Hi David, you can install on memory card. Apply settings after choosing your desired font size and reboot device. If something goes wrong then remove
memory card and boot phone… In this way you wouldn’t loose any data.
When i started work on this application three weeks ago it was just for fun, and telling you truth we had no idea it’ll get such popular
Now we’re making improvements in it not thinking about it just an application but as application which is liked by people. So please stay tuned for upgrade version next week.
Cheers
May 19th, 2007 at 4:15 am
one more thing: during development i tested it on 6290 and did not have any problem. But still i advice you to install on memory card and re-try.
tnx
May 20th, 2007 at 12:08 am
You are a great help Hameed and I thank you. I will try again. I will wait until I see you announce that the new vesion is ready and then I will buy and download. I’m watching this space!!!
May 20th, 2007 at 5:47 am
I have the same problem with my 6290, so I *STRONGLY* recommend that do not install it on this phone. I can’t get my phone to work at all.
May 20th, 2007 at 5:59 am
Having said that, it suddenly started working again with this David’s trick. I just had to remove the sim-card and wait quite long. The software and phone seem to work with the default font size, but when I try to increase the font, it won’t boot. Seems like a great software, hope you can fix this.
May 20th, 2007 at 10:49 am
Hi Achu. Tried again today with same problem. Got my son to uninstall it and to get phone to go back to factory settings. This worked fine without help from Nokia agent this time. There does seem to be a problem here regarding the 6290 despite all the help Hameed has given. It’s a great piece of software but somehow, you and I don’t seem to have the magic touch that Hameed has! Wish it wasn’t the case because the font on the phone is tiny!
May 21st, 2007 at 9:31 am
N75 & 6290 problem is fixed.. The new version will be released tomorrow.
Its being tested now.
Thanks

Really bad news, Hameed despite all your efforts. Just downloaded the new version and the only noticeable change is that the phone re-boots itself. As far as the 6290 is concerned, it still fails to boot up and tells me every time I try to take it to my local dealer. It was installed on the memory card as opposed to the phone. Will still work if I shut the flip immediately after turning on but not if I leave the flip open. So effectively, we are still at square one! Sorry about the bad news.
May 24th, 2007 at 11:29 am
David are you sure you’re using version 1.10?
we tested on many devices including N75&6290 and we didn’t face any problem on any device.
Shutting the flip and phone starts , its really strange…… :-O
May be this device has some problem?
May 24th, 2007 at 11:08 pm
Yes, Hameed. Definitely used your new link on 22nd May. And I’ve had the phone checked out by a Nokia Official Agent. Silly, isn’t it? And I want that software so much!
May 24th, 2007 at 11:36 pm
I like the original font
May 25th, 2007 at 6:17 am
David , may be you should try to update your firmware? i assure you that font magnifier’s new version is working with 6290 & N75 on which previous version had problem.
May 26th, 2007 at 9:05 am
I cannot thank you enough for all your attempts to help me, Hameed. I tried the download again this morning. Same problem yet again. So I uninstalled again and went to the dealer to ask about the firmware. He told me that when I took in my phone to be reset last week, the very latest version of the firmware had gone in. So there we are. I remain sad and disappointed as Nokia really don’t seem to realize that after a certain age, their largest font is totally unreadable to most people even with their glasses on. In the meantime, I remain jealous of all those lucky people who have successfully downloaded the program and will continue to monitor the site for future upgrades - who knows, one of them might just go into my phone!
May 28th, 2007 at 2:20 am
Font Magnifier latest version works excellent on my E50. I find the text size at 130 most readable and beautiful. Goin beyond that, FM start to use bold character which looks not so nice.
As the latest version allows you to “soft” re-boot your phone with Option/Apply command, I usually use it to re-boot my phone (even not changing the font size) when the available internal RAM became too low. A very convenient 2-in-1 application for me!
May 30th, 2007 at 8:48 am
I’ve just installed it on the Nokia E65. It does thejob regarding the fonts. However, when I switch the phone on it will not receive the first incoming call. The phone lights up - thats all ! I’ve tested this by ring it from another phone. The caller hears it ringing ok but nothing is heardon the E65.
When I flip the phone up - it eventually says missed call etc. The next calls all come through ok. Anyone else had this problem ? Do I unload the program to see if it is causing the problem ?
May 31st, 2007 at 3:34 am
Tried installing the Font Magnifier today on my brand new 6290. The phone would not reboot after setting had been made. I had to make a reset (pressing “green/recieve call”, “*” and “3″ at the same time until phone resets - this may take some time!).
Font Magnifier seems to be a brilliant idea, I would definitely buy the application if it had been compatible with the otherwise excellent 6290.
May 31st, 2007 at 11:37 pm
Good to read your post, Ivan. I was beginning to think it was only me who was struggling regarding the 6290.
June 1st, 2007 at 3:01 am
Hi Hameed,
I’m using FM 1.10 for quite sometimes on nokia E50. There is one bug which should be addressed in your next version.
There is no problem with the font display on Standby screen, Text Message list. They always display correctly. However, sometimes, the font size come back to the small original size when viewing in some application, e.g. text messaging (the font size of the list still ok, but the message itself when viewing sometimes revert to the original small size). When this happens, it also happens in Papyrus software.
The only way to make it work as normal again is to apply and re-boot the phone again.
There is another issue which I’m not sure whether it is due to FM, sometimes I cannot call up Contact List when pressing the side button.

I have tried using psiloc font magnifier and it greatly helped me. Can i get a free license? How?
July 28th, 2007 at 3:34 pm
the new psiloc font magnifier version 1.30 is not working on the E61i. The menu text (which is already big enough) is enlarged but the text message / e-mail text as well as all the other input text (contacts / notes / calendar…) do not enlarge any longer or at least show as bold text. What went wrong here? Too much good old Polish vodka in the summer heat? The new version is definitely a step back as one can read also from the comments on the psiloc forum site.
July 31st, 2007 at 12:45 am
Hi Hameed,
Just read through all the comments. Have you tested on E70?
thanks

Does it make a difference whether it is a European or APAC edition Nokia E61i? Anybody has a clue? I reloaded the Psiloc Font Magnifier but nothing changed. It still does not work. Thanks for your support.
August 3rd, 2007 at 6:19 am

Yes Usetan, this application will work with the Nokia E65 as well.
August 3rd, 2007 at 8:21 am
The Psiloc people seem to be on holiday. No answers from Poland.
August 6th, 2007 at 1:26 pm
Thanks …..works great on E65. Now my vife can use the phone
August 23rd, 2007 at 6:20 pm
Just installed on my new Nokia E65 and works great
August 27th, 2007 at 2:36 pm
I installed it on my E90 and works great the only issue is the line length, if the font size is increased above 120% it will dissapear within the line and will only be able to see half of the font. Is there a way to increase line length.
Regards

Nokia offer free download with full license for Polish users:
http://www.nokia.com.pl/nokia/pomoc/oprogramowanie/fontmagnifier.html
(last link near: “Pobierz aplikacjÄ™ Font Magnifier”) After install select in application menu “licencje” (licence) and next “darmowa licencja” (free license) Thats it all
September 7th, 2007 at 7:53 am
Thanks very much!
This stops my search for a bigger font “groter lettertype” for the Nokia E50.
September 7th, 2007 at 4:54 pm
Is it possible to change the fonts on the external screen but not the internal screen on the E90?
September 11th, 2007 at 9:06 am
I have installed the font magnifier from the polish site but it doesn’t work. I mean, I cannot find the program on my mobile phone. How can I access it? Should I see it in the menu?

Hi, I tried the new 1.1 version on my 6290 a while ago and still had the same problem as with the earlier version. At least at that time there wasn’t any firmware updates on nokia’s pages for me. Probably I and David have some different version of the phone than you, Hameed. Or we have some other software installed that conflicts or something.
October 25th, 2007 at 10:49 pm
Hi Hameed/Psiloc, It is a great application (magnifier) and it also cost to develope. But can you give a free version, (E65) just the basic for text message and contact entries please? Or maybe at least Nokia APAC can give this basic version free as their phones that never comes with “font options”. Its a great relieved. Many many thanks.
October 26th, 2007 at 12:21 am
Hi, Can I have a free basic version of the magnifier (at least for contacts and sms sizes) for my E65 please ? Or at least Nokia APAC can give it as their phones did not comes with “font size options” Many many thanks.

Gave up on Psiloc Font Magnifier. Slows down the phone and in most applications no change to see. At least not with the E61i APAC version.
December 4th, 2007 at 10:28 am
I agree steff, it slowed down my e61 quite a bit. But I did like the increase in font size. But in the end it was just too slow to keep it on the phone.

Have tried it again and now it wont even install gives me an error message about there being no license, so cannot even try it now, desperate to sort this as I cannot see text properly due to poor eyesight.
January 23rd, 2008 at 5:26 am
I installed it on E61i. It’s working well in the menu and standby display. But, still it did not solve any problem on email/test reading/writing as font size did not change at all.
Anyone knows why is this?
BTW, I have already upgraded to the latest firmware.
January 30th, 2008 at 8:01 pm
I have just downloaded into my E65. Seems ok so far. Can you please advise how it is paid for after 10 day trial and the cost in Australian dollars?

Hey lemonesugar,
I haven’t tried the software yet but the problem that you’re facing is not related to it. You have to go to applications manager and disable the certificate check. Then you’ll be able to install whatever software you want.
