Lock Your Nokia E61 Remotely

Imagine that you misplace your precious Nokia E61. A tragedy in itself but with the amount of information on the device it could be a disaster. There is a great, built-in feature that lets you lock your Nokia E61 remotely. This trick could save your day by preventing unauthorised access to your Nokia E61.

The only thing you need to do is to enable this feature and set up the lock code. You send an SMS with the lock code to your device to turn on the lock.

Go to Tools > Settings

Security > Phone and SIM. Scroll down to "Allow remote lock" and toggle to yes.

Enter a remote lock code of at least 5 numbers and/or digits.

Verify your remote lock code and then confirm the setting with your device lock code.

The default device lock code for all Nokia E61 is 12345. If you haven't already change your device lock code I encourage you to change it. Once you have confirmed with the lock code you have enabled remote lock of your Nokia E61.

By sending an SMS with the lock code in the message to your device you can now lock it down.

Although this is far from an "enterprise strength" device management solution it is a great way to protect your device. Since this feature comes standard on all Nokia E61 (all S60 3rd edition devices) why not use it. It might save you one day.

Hi. thanks for the post. I learn a lot from this site daily for my e61. Just noticed that the standby clock on your wallpaper looks different to mine. Can I ask where you got this from? It looks much easier to read compared to the default style. Thanks!!

  6. Tan Vachiramon Says:

I can’t seem to enable this option. I think my provider (Vodafone UK) has pre-entered the “Lock Code” and I can’t find it anywhere in the instruction manual. Otherwise, keep up the great blog!

  7. Jukka Says:

Great stuff! Do you know if this works in all Eseries products, how about other S60?

  8. admin Says:

    Hi Tan,
Try “12345″ as your lock code. That is the standard, pre-configured lock code for all Nokia E61 (and the rest of the E-series). I hope that works for you.

    Hi Jukka,
It is definetely part of the E-series, I tried it on an E70, E61 and an E60. I assume it is on all S60 3rd edition devices. I think it is representative of the many, many hidden “gems” with these devices.
    Cheers!

  9. Tan Vachiramon Says:

    Thanks, I’m such a dufous! “12345″ worked.

    Hi Tan,
    I’m glad it worked! :)

    Hi,

Just bought an N80 and this site is great as a lot of the stuff here will work on that phone…..except there’s no Remote Lock on this device (why Nokia?).

Never mind, I’ve got a lot of tips and apps that do work OK so never mind!

  15. fredy Says:

    Hi,
I still cant get my device locked. I have set the Auto Remote Lock to ‘Yes’, changed the code and everything but still cant figured how to lock my device.

And what do you mean by these sentence-
“You send an SMS with the lock code to your device to turn on the lock. ”
    &
” By sending an SMS with the lock code in the message to your device you can now lock it down”

    I have Nokia E60

  16. admin Says:

    Hi Fredy,
In order to succssfully activate this feature you must first come up with and enter your personal remote device lock code. You enter this twice. Then you have to enter the device code. The standard code on all E-series devices is “12345″ but if you have changed it you need to enter your device code.

If you successfully set it up you will get a “code accepted” message as above.

Then you can send youself an SMS with your personal device lock code - that will lock your device.
    I hope it helps.

  17. Anders Says:

    Hi Admin and Fredy,

I’m also a little bit confused. I have entered a “remote lock message” containing 6 characters, repeated the message and confirmed the procedure with my lock code (5 digits). Everything is accepted by my E61. Finally, I send a SMS from my computer containing the lock message. The messages arrives to the phone - and nothing more happens. The unit remains unlocked!

Obviously, I must do something wrong. But what?

Admin, your blog is really great!

  18. admin Says:

    Hi Fredy and Anders,

One problem could be if you send the message from a service that doesn’t deliver the message as a plain SMS. For an example, sometimes 3rd party SMS delivery services can put in extra characters (crap) that can prevent the device lock. It has to be exactly as the device lock code appears. Test it from someone’s phone - that would be the best test.
Let me know if it works.

  19. nazhri Says:

Does not work on my phone. I’ve sent so many sms from my Nokia 9300 and the E61 will only say “1 new message”. I have the mind to hard reset the phone just because it’s getting so annoying to know that it works on others but not on mine.

  20. Juan J. Martinez Says:

Does not work in my E61 either. It´s weird.

  21. Juan J. Martinez Says:

    Hi,
Found the problems with remote locking on my E61. If you can´t make it work, read this thread at My Symbian

    http://my-symbian.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=27169&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=30

In addition to setting a password for both the memory card and the phone, you need to keep your messages in the phone memory instead of storing them in the memory card. After changing this setting, remote locking works for me.

  22. Graham Woodend Says:

I have forgotton my lock code (dumbass !!), is there anyway around this ?

  23. Anders Says:

    Hi,

As I wrote in an earlier comment, I had severe problems with the remote locking. After resetting my E61 totally, I reinstalled every program and … remote locking works fine!

Perhaps the E61 OS is written by the same guys who wrote MS Windows…;-)

  24. admin Says:

    Anders:
:-) I sure hope not. Glad it’s working now.

    Graham:
Did you change the standard “12345″ lock code?

  25. Woody Says:

Yes, I did change the standard “12345″ code and now can’t unlock my phone. I’ve seen threads on other sites saying that a ‘back door’ code can be generated to get me back in but I can’t see to get that to work either !!

  26. admin Says:

    Hi Woody,
I’ll do some research and see what I can find. In the meanwhile if you manage to solve this please follow up.
    Cheers and good luck.

    Hi,
The lock code suddenly appeared on my E70 without me actually setting it! How do I remove or disable the Autolock? On changing the Autolock period to None i recieve the message ‘Cannot disable Autolock’.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Rgds

  34. Frogman Says:

    Hi,

I have the similiar problem described by baldyman. It sort of just appeared out of nowhere. I have read that people had the problem with Mail for Exchange / Blackberry, but I have had that running for at least a month without any hassles. It almost seems that it happend after I setup Internet calling (SIP / VOIP). Could this be the cuase of the problem?

    Rgds,
    Frogman

  35. Frogman Says:

    Frogman here again.

Apparently there has been an update of MS Exchange which forces the autolock functionality. Apperently the Nokia E61 keeps holding the autolock setting. After deleting MEF, Making a backup, Resetting my phone, putting back backup and reinstalling MEF everything works fine again.

  36. Karimo Says:

    Hello everybody,

I guess this never happened to anyone of you..?

My Nokia E-61 was set up to auto lock every five minutes. Last night I switched the Arabic writing option to send an SMS. Then after a couple minutes, I tried typing in my code, I could only write in Arabic or Numbers. I switched the phone off and then back on, I tried to use the shift or control button…..But nothing seems to work.
I can only receive calls and when I hang up the screen goes back asking for the lock code
If anyone knows how to fix it or if there is a shortcut to change the writing option, that would make my life easier and save my phone

    Rgds,

    Karimo

  37. Hannu Says:

Hi, I set the lock code, the phone locks with that send as an SMS. But I can open it with the default code 12345 and not with the lock code sent. Is that the same what you have ?

  38. admin Says:

    Hi Hannu,
    There are two codes.
The code to unlock your device (default is 12345) and the code to lock your code remotely. If you don”t change the default unlock code (12345) you can still use it to unlock your device. It sounds to me as if you didn’t change the default unlock code.
    Cheers

    Hi,

This is a great feature, but what I would also like to do is have the device automaticly lock if I don’t use it after a preset time for example 2 or 3 minutes.
How should I configure this? It’s not clear in the manual…

  46. Monty Says:

I have loaded the Blackberry connect on the Nokia E61. By default it enabled the lockcode on the phone and unfortunately I cannot disable the option.

I even tried to change the minutes to 100 which is the maximum, but it resets it back to 1 minute. Please assist as it amkes my life difficult.

    Thanks

I have nokia 9300 which is same as 9300i only the virsion of the software is changed is it posibale to update my 9300 with 9300i’s software? and can anyone tell me how to reset the phone to its factory defult ?

  48. Josh Says:

It would be cool if the lock screen displayed your contact information, or some sort of customizable lock message. That way if you lose your phone and its locked, there is more chance that it would make its way back to you. I’m excited to try the lock feature but terrified its gonna lock and then some sort of bug will prevent me from unlocking it.

  49. Frode Says:

    Kamran:

To reset your 9300/9300i to its factory default you have to do the following procedure:

    1. Turn off phone and take out the battery
    2. Insert battery, and while it boots up press and hold Ctrl + Shift + F
    3. After a few seconds you will be asked if you want to format or cancel

In order to get rid of inability to alter autolock settings after synchronization with Exchange, there is a workaround as follows:

    - install BlackBerry client from Nokia update page
    - do not configure it
    - uninstall BlackBerry client

After that, autolock should be off again (worked for me on E61i)

Hope that helps you as well, cheers guys ;)

    Hi all,

If you are having trouble trying to send an SMS and making it work then just text your self from your phone.
Text the lock down code and put your number in as the sending

Also remember you need to put the exact code as you typed.

so if you did something like lock down or lockdown, make sure you don’t capalize the L and also put the space in there.
