Look Up Contacts By Company

One shortcoming of the built in address book application of the Eseries devices is that you cannot search contacts by company name.

Sure, there are additional software that you could add/use to overcome this issue (we will get to those applications later) but here is a quick solution for which you don’t need any additional software.

Just open up a new text message, type the company name in the “To” field and then press in the center key. The contact information which includes the company name you searched for will be displayed.

This way you can look through the list of contacts for a specific company and then go to the address book to look up the details. This is a simple solution to search contacts by company name.

Of course, you can also download Nokia Mobile Search and search the device locally for the same information. It works great but it is an additional download unless you are using one of the new Eseries devices.

Another solution is to use Alon Contact Guide, an enhanced address book which lets you search any field of information. But once again, that is an additional download.

It is interesting that the “To” field of the Text Message application will search company name while the address book application cannot… Hmmm, I wonder why that is.

A Big thank you to Naythan who taught me this neat workaround!

Do you have any other unusual tips, tricks or shortcuts to share? drop me a note.

This is one of the most annoying things about the contact manager. It drives me bonkers. So much of the time I can’t remember the name of my contact at a company but I do remember the name of the company. Or, when I go to a restaurant I like to know the name of the Maitred’ or owner/manager and I can only look up the restaurant by that persons name not the restaurant name. Drives me NUTS.

    Hi,

you can look up contacts by company also by “Search” app., first seen on E50. It is smaller and faster. Could be downloaded from Catalogs or from Nokia Support web site.

    Thanks for great blog.

    HI,

Is it possible to find out the name of the person when you have his contact number?

The obvious thing is to call and check but if due to some reason same number has been assigned under 2 names then none of the name shows up!

    Regards,
    Kumar

another way is to just go through your address book, and add each person to a “group” and rename it to the company name..that way, when you text, press centre button for contacts as usual, right click to groups, and your list of companies will be there with each individual associated.

    ie..
    go to groups..
    options.
    new group.. for example “e-series”
then go back to contact list and add contact(s) to this group by clicking “options….add to group”
do the same again for other companies and assign different ringtones too.

The contact manager has one more shortcoming: it does not provide prefix dialing option. This feature is important for business travelers who like to take advantage of cheap long-distance service.

Pick the contact’s number->voice call->prefix dialing code->phone rings the other end. Or, allow cut-and-paste in the dialing mode: key prefix on phone and paste the contact’s digits.

Totally off-topic, but what theme are you using? I went through the archives and have the set of four “dots” themes, I’ve been using the blue one on my N95, but the red one shows up backwards, with most of the screen white and the dots red. Suggestions?

One other useful tool look up contacts by company name is Corporate Phonebook by SysOpen Digia.

With this application you can export all your contacts from e.g. Outlook to your device and after that you can search by using different fields like title, name, company.

A free trial can be downloaded from the link above.

Hi I have tried the Nokia E61 search tool as my finder. I have to say quite powerful as it looks through emails and calendar entries. BUT it does not search through the notes or THE CONTACTS! I will contact Club Nokia to find out -has anybody had this problem?
