SMS Chat - Threaded SMS For Nokia Eseries
Thank you Symbian Wave for creating SMS Chat For S60 3rd edition - a *really great* threaded SMS chat application for Nokia Eseries!
Many of us "switchers" coming to Nokia Eseries devices from Palm Treo really miss a more robust SMS application. Well, look no further. I would go as far as to say that SMS Chat For S60 3rd edition is almost as robust SMS application as you can get.
The application is stylish and has a very professional look and feel.
I do think look and feel of an application is very important and I'm glad to say that even though the application looks great on the surface the feature set is even better!
Needless to say the application supports emoticons and displays SMS in a conversational, threaded way. SMS messages are sorted by person and you can navigate to first or last message in a thread or even search within a thread.
The application includes an SMS scheduler which enables delayed SMS sending.
Also supported are delivery status, templates for simplifying sending commonly used messages/phrases and support for "themes" and more…
I hope the future, native SMS application on Eseries devices will be as good, look as good and as feature rich as SMS Chat For S60 3rd edition.
Thanks Faust!
Update: I forgot to mention that the application is available as a downloadable trial here.

I just gave this one a try today, and did a write up on my blog as well..
didnt like the fact that the contacts are loaded w\ last.first name order..it also seems to load the same contacts’ conversation twice other than that i love the iphone sms look and feel.. threadsms loaded convos from your sms application automatically which is nice..other than that im loving the iphone look and feel of this app, all that needs to happen is for it to replace the built in app..all the steps is a pain..nice write up..

Hi admin:
i dont know if this is the space to say a big discover thing that i found in my NOKIA E70 and is very important that others E-users know.
since i got my cell phone was a year ago, i just had to charge it every day, every day and …. every day. I was thinking what a hack, is a business cell phone how come business men can have time to charge the cellphone every day? so, yestarday i was playing with my cell phone and i got the next way TOOLS>PHONE>DISPLAY>POWER SAVER TIME - OUT. i had a 30 minutes later the screen saver works but i changed it to ONE MINUTE and ………… BINGO……. my cellphone have 2 days and i it has the half of battery left… wow i am so happy cuz i dont have to be boring of plug in my cell every night, so now i will do it each third day.
Enjoy AMATEUR USERS heheh

I am running the trial version and it seems that the application opens faster than ThreadSMS. And it also isnt much of a memory hog as ThreadSMS is. ThreadSMS requred 2.5MB of system memory to run in the background while SMSChat only required a measly 103Kb.

You’re right that has absolutely nothing to do with SMS threading of any sort..

i downloaded, tried, and paid for this app as soon as i saw it announced. smschat rocks! i’m one of those ex-treo users who still look to the treo with longing because of what to me is its killer feature, threaded messaging. to have it on the e61i is a prayer answered.
an important note: when i paid for and got my license (it comes as a separate .sis file), i got a certification error message during the installation of the license file, despite my having applied the usual ALL/OFF certificate fix. i wrote support@symbian wave, who promptly referred me to the developer (named–believe it or not–robin hood), who sent me a modified file within the hour. it now works beautifully without screen nags or lags. thanks a bunch, guys! great software, great look (nothing cheesy about this one), and great service.

I wish the application did not take a hefty 3 seconds to load all the chats each and every time you go to a different contact thread. The contact database takes a bit of time as well. I’m currently using this with an E61i. I will say that I’ve had quite a pleasure using this program though: http://howardforums.com/showpost.php?p=9247974&postcount=8
It’s called TEXTCHAT from TALKINSILENT ..I believe its a dead end though because they want to use it for only specific providers. The TextChat portion of the application is really intuitive and pretty much the way “threaded sms” should be in a sense. The app takes over once a new text is recieved. I’ve posted screenshots above in the post. Also it also brings itself to the front when a text from the same person is recieved. Limitations are that you can only thread one person at a time. There is absolutely no history either. But the program works so awesome though.. I wish I could get something similar to this within the SMSChat Program. SMSChat has the right idea as far as the general look and feel of the program. The only flaws I see are the navigation through the program/soft key locations, and the time it takes to load the threads. It’s really slow. The TextChat app is the only app i’ve seen that actually has the blinking cursor message editor below the text instead of a completely separate page followed by the “New SMS/ Reply” soft key.
Kudos to the SMSChat program though. I and a few others have been talking to developer about feature suggestions. I feel as this could definitely become a great everyday-use program as updates become available.

I downloaded this yesterday and just uninstalled it this morning. I couldn’t stand the time it took to open each chat. Also, it still does not replace the nokia’s SMS application, so I don’t believe it’s ready for prime time yet. The good thing is that the company is very responsive, so I’m sure newer versions will be much better.
Although this program uses much less memory, I believe it is slower than ThreadSMS due to the lag before opening up each chat. If you leave ThreadSMS running in the background, it is actually quite fast (startup time is long however).
Also, the chat window in SMS Chat is BEAUTIFUL! ThreadSMS is plain and sometimes hard to read (fonts are smaller). I’m hoping one of these two programs evolves into something much better. Things I hope for:
1. Replace Nokia’s SMS App (a must!)
2. Speedy response times when using the program
3. Maybe the ability to put in avatars?

errol, that’s the cosmos themes that comes with the app. reza, see my reply above–you should email symbian wave about your problem; they’ll pass it on to the developer, who will send you a new license that will work. no more certificate error
May 24th, 2007 at 6:51 pm
and may i add that the app gets appreciably faster once it’s paid for and the nag disappears… one great thing is that you can use it as one of the two apps you can assign a selection key to, so it’s my right key, and i can go straight into sending an SMS with one click. true, it doesn’t replace the built-in SMS, but it works alongside it–anything you do on one app is mirrored in the other.
May 25th, 2007 at 6:13 am
Jose, I meant the theme on the E61i, not the theme for SMSchat. Thanks
May 25th, 2007 at 8:52 am
this is definitely a beautifully looking app, but i have one major gripe:
while receiving texts in the SMSchat, the same texts also register thru the normal channels. meaning, once you close SMSchat, your phone will promp you with “5 new messages” etc.. etc..
then you have to re-read or delete them.
horribly annoying.
May 26th, 2007 at 12:47 am
I think if you scroll down in smschat, so the dotted box is around the new mssg, then that mssg will be marked as read by the built in sms system.
May 26th, 2007 at 10:09 am
errol–sorry, i was wrong about the cosmos, too. i think we’re actually looking at the mocha dots theme, which is available online
May 26th, 2007 at 10:13 am
i should’ve said, it’s available right here:

(sorry again–it’s 1:13 am where i am

Just installed it, someone sent me an SMS…but it wont show up in this app … will it only thread conversations I start?
May 26th, 2007 at 7:14 pm
jens–i think once you bring up the sender’s name under “people”, it won’t show up–indeed, the only threads it’ll open will be for those people you choose. it’s not like the treo where everything is threaded.
May 26th, 2007 at 10:10 pm
i meant, “until you bring up the sender’s name”. duh.

Just installed it!
very cool!
Thanks fopr the post. great.

Hey! Since I couldn’t figure what your e-mail address is (I couldn’t find it on your site) I’ll just post here what I want to say: Do you know the reason why there is no Kayway-reader for the E-series devices available?? It’s only available for N-series!! Maybe you can do something about it…
May 27th, 2007 at 9:59 am
Quick question, I have scratched up my Nokia e62 quite a bit, and I’m looking for replacement OEM housing. I was curious whether someone knows where to buy replacement housing, or if a Nokia e61’s housing would work.
May 27th, 2007 at 11:56 am
I spent some 3 years with Treo 600 and 650 - this “works” but it’t no where near as good as the Treo version. You can’t even see the previous messages as you compose your reply.
May 27th, 2007 at 5:50 pm
Chris,
I agree. We’re all using the treo as a benchmark for these threaded sms applications. I thought that was annoying as well. It organizes your conversation in a “chat-style” format, but once you start a new sms it is back to the old way of composing a message. I really hope this company releases new versions on a regular basis. I really believe they’re on the right track.

i agree with you there, chris; as good as it is i still don’t see the e61i as a “treo-killer” and the threaded SMS is one of the reasons why (same here–three years with a 600 and two 650’s)…. i also wish there was a way of enlarging the font within this app. i already have Font Magnifier installed but it seems to have no effect on SMSChat, even with “other fonts” maximized. any tips?
May 27th, 2007 at 6:32 pm
Love it!, I too had a Treo and upgraded to the E6xi. Even without the threaded chat, the E6x rocked over a Treo. Treo’s were always failing.
Thank you for a great rev 1.0, looking forward to subsequent revisions that will no doubt get better. Thanks

After trying to use it as my main SMS client for the last week, I’ve found it is very pretty but it crashes pretty much after every other txt sent.
Even with the ‘crashes’, the ‘unread sms’, & the ‘compose without being able to see the rest of the thread’ problems, this is obviously an app that users really want.
Hope they can keep improving it.

ive downloaded this app thinking it was a mobile bypass to my yahoo messenger account but when i cant figure how i list back-in, my buddy list… do i need to know the phone number of my chatters in order to start a chat online?
June 16th, 2007 at 1:32 pm
I agree that the Treo’s threaded SMS app is the gold standard. It’s perfect for a conversation, just like AOL Instant Messenger or Apple’s iChat. I’m trying the 15 day version of SMS Chat for my E61i but I won’t buy anything until it matches what the Treo gave me.

Can you download the SMS from the phone onto your PC? like, as a backup or whatever?

I apologize for my question in advance, but do you download the application via your phone’s browser, or is there a way to transfer the app to your phone? I have a mac, so I use isync for contacts and such, but would I need to use a pc to do this?
if there are any basic directions for how to get the app up and running, they’d be very appreciated
