Black Nokia E65 & New E65 Blog
As expected, I've seen a gazillion of Nokia devices while on vacation in China.
But what I didn't expect was to see so many Eseries devices. I've seen some Nokia E61, more Nokia E50 but most Nokia E65.
It's seems as this device is selling well all over the world. Alan in Australia sent me some photos of his Black Nokia E65 from the carrier 3. The Nokia E65 is one of 3's X-Series compatible phones.
I wish the black Nokia E65 was available as an unlocked device but to my knowledge it isn't.
However, If you already have a Nokia E65 but like me is drooling over a black look for your device you can try out the Nokia E65 case we wrote about previously.
As seen by these great photos by Stephen the case give the device the black look while also adding a protective layer to your device.
There is a great new blog dedicated to the Nokia E65 well worth adding to your list of daily reads. It's run by Aaron, a passionate Nokia E65 user.
Keep up the great work Aaron, I look forward to continue reading your blog.
Thanks to Alan and Stephen for the photos!

Actually although this phone comes as locked to 3 Mobile, you can call the customer service and get the unlocking code for free.
But there’s branding on the phone itself and the software is branded as well, although you don’t really notice the branding for software as it only shows when you start up and shut down the phone

I’m also with 3 in Australia and on the X-Series Silver plan (500 MB for AUD 20 per mth). It’s not bad & pretty fast network too.
Re/ X-Series compatible phones - I’m using my E61 on it and it runs perfectly. Initially, they didn’t allow me to sign up for the X-Series because the E61 wasn’t on the compatible list but after much negotiation, they allowed me. It runs well. I chk mail, surf the web, IM, use it as a modem & even skype on it.
So, if any of you try to sign up with 3 for their X-Series and they don’t let you simply because your E61/E61i/etc… isn’t on the compatible list, just tell them you understand but wish to sign up anyway. After you’ve signed up, just configure everything manually.
Cheers,
Andrew

FYI, the black E65 is available in the Philippines and is being sold as an unlocked version.
I think the black version is also available in Singapore and in other Asia-PAC countries.

Hi, I live in the UK and would like to know where if at all I could get that black case from, the ones i’ve found don’t look anything like as good, thanks
July 6th, 2007 at 5:41 pm
so you can just call up 3 and get the unlocking code from them at any given time?
anyone know how the branding affects the phone, as compared with a SIM-free e65? and is the browser still the proprietery nokia browser?

In the US, buy.com is selling an e65 unlocked which they describe as “black”. It is not “black”, it is actually the “mocha” e65. Nonetheless, the price is *very good* - mine arrived today at the low price of $419, delivered.

I’ve had my E65 for almost a month now as a free upgrade on my service provider, and I must say, I’m actually quite disappointed by its performance. It randomly reboots while I’m surfing the internet, and if I dare it to open my inbox while I’ve got the browser window open, all hell breaks loose. I’ve returned it once so this is the ‘new’ replacement. Anybody else have similar experiences? I’m missing my nokia 6680 now…

just got my black e65, 3 branded and unlocked. note that this version is made in finland, branding is minimal and mostly cosmetic. the only MAJOR bug about the phone is it keep trying to connect to 3’s planet 3 portal every 15 seconds or so. that would take up most of the activities log which includes calls and sms received, and is a very big flaw. other than that the phone works fine.

I hope you can help me. I bought a GPS440 bluetooth GPS receiver see: http://www.cellularline.com model BTGPS440, and I run wayfinder 7, and the preinstalled Navigator applications.
When I first got my E65 to pair with the GPS receiver it worked just fine. So after checking all was OK, I closed the application, and shut down the receiver. When I next tried to use the GPS receiver with my phone it could not find a GPS device, so I deleted the pair and tried to detect the device a second time. My phone recognised a “bluttooth device” but no longer detected the “SJ40 GPS” as before, and anyway could not pair with it. I then tried pairing with my PC, and the PC did see the phone, but only the phone mac address. It looked like the hardware was working but somehow my phone has lost its identity and can no longer pair with any other bluetooth device. I guess something has cause the phone configuration data to be corrupted. So now I have no bluetooth and no GPS either.
I have spent a lot of time and effort configuring my phone just the way I like wlan settings, print settings, gmail, general mail, google-earth bla bla bla.
I can get no help at all from the Nokia web site, its just a rehash of the manual for people who can’t RTFM, and it is impossible to find anyone to contact. After looking around on the web it dose seem people are having trouble with third party GPS devices. see
http://discussions.europe.nokia.com/rss/message?board.id=accessories&message.id=5361
for example, and there is more where that came from. (By the way my GPS receiver works just fine with my friend Palm and with my PC, so its not broken.
I havc tried resetting the phone, pulling the battery out etc and nothing changes.
There is one thing I didn’t try yet, in phone settings there is an field “orig.phone settings”, but the manual is useless, I have no idea what that would do, and anyway I do not know what the “device lock code” is or how to get hold of it. Appart from the bluetooth problem my E65 is quite brilliant, and so was the GPS for the 10 minutes it worked.
My questions are…
1) How can I get my phones bluetooth working again, preferably without having to go back to square one.
2) Will it just break again the next time I need to use GPS.
3) Is this a known issue, and are they going to come out with a firmware upgrade.
I guess I could always take it back to the shop, its only two weeks old and get my money back and buy a phone that works properly with bluetooth, but I rather like the E65 and all I need is someone who knows whats going on to advise me. (The people in the shop haven’t got a clue)

I am in Australia, got a free upgrade on a new Red E65, shopped on eBay and got a genuin E65 white housing, my partner changed it so it’s all white now. One of a kind and turns many heads. :o) It’s not difficult but it’s not easy at the same time, a little knowledge helps, as you don’t want to wreck the handset. Since then I’ve also downloaded the nokia maps and navigated my way around using a GPS bluetooth receiver which works fantastic. I did do a hard reset on the E65 (*#7370#) as it was a little bit slow at the start and now I have no issues at all with my Nokia E65. I use WiFi, I’ve installed Y Browser and various other applications which work great also. I also use a wireless Logitech which I have bluetooth connection to the E65 and find updating music/photo’s etc and backing up my phone a real breeze.
All in all it’s 100% satisfaction for this diva and I must say I love my White E65.

Hi, 6 weeks ago I took out a contract with 3 for a Nokia E65, from their new store in Newtownabbey, for business purposes. As I’m now self-employed I need good service but, just when I need to use the phone it died on me. When I took it back for a replacement and not wishing for a repaired phone, I was told that 3 doesn’t do replacements. When I pointed out that the Sales of Goods Act might apply the salesperson simply stated that he didn’t know anything about the Sale of Goods Act because he was not a lawyer - that’s all right then. Although I have a long period for the contact to run with 3, I won’t be renewing when it comes to an end.

I found a crystal clear casing (no, not black) here: http://cgi.ebay.com.sg/Crystal-Hard-Case-Cover-for-Nokia-E65_W0QQitemZ130173340712QQihZ003QQcategoryZ20367QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem#ebayphotohosting
And yes, it ships from Singapore, but they have loads off stuff there, including a blue case for the E65 (never seen it before). I was unable to find a black one, but if you only wants protection, then it might be good.

I have a question. My cellphone provider in Mexico (Telcel) just opened in my city the access to 3G. They keep telling me my nokia E65 has not 3G support.
However, I can see it has the dual mode in which can pick up a GSM network or a UMTS network (which apparently equals 3G)
When I set my E65 to a UMTS network, it reboots and shows me below where the signal bars should be the “3G Logo”. But the cell phone picks up absolutely no signal.
So my question is this:
1. Is there a NON 3G version of the E65 or…
2. My cell phone provider does not accept my phone as a 3G or…
3. There’s a way to reconfigure it so it picks up 3G networks.
I would appreciate any help to my email.
Thank you so much in advance.

@Chaac
Hi, I’m from México and own an E65 phone. Telcel offers 3G in 850Mhz band and our Nokia works on 1900/2100 Mhz 3G band, the reason because don’t work on Telcel 3G.
