BlackBerry Connect 4.0 For Nokia E61i
Thanks to Risotto for pointing out that BlackBerry Connect 4.0 also is available for Nokia E61i. Since I am not a BlackBerry Connect user I tend to focus on Mail For Exchange.
However, I know that there are a number of Eseries users who are also loyal BlackBerry Connect users. Rejoice - BBC 4.0 has arrived.
Among the new features of BBC 4.0 for Nokia Eseries are:
- Over The Air Enterprise activation
- OTA Contacts Sync
- Pin to Pin message (receiving)
- Email filters and signature
- Out of office message
- Attachment Viewer updates for pictures
More information about BlackBerry Connect for Nokia Eseries here.

good luck actually getting it to work reliably without a BES…
emails were sporatic if they came at all and rarely did an email marked as “sent” actually arrive @ the other end.
I went back to the older version after a day

Well i have tried downloading but it install in chinese despite me chosing english uk or us. Given up downloading it over and over again and i have even put hard reset to see whether it have got something to do with my setting. What it does for me at least is that after every installation, the software send a sms config and load some chinese stuff. this even happen when i load the bb without the sim card. Is it only me or do i have to learn chinese now…

Will it work with E61?
June 5th, 2007 at 9:58 am
Don’t try installing this on E65
I just saw s60 and downloaded it, but it says it’s not authorised yet. Anyone know if they will release someting similar for e65? it would be nice to get these new features!
June 5th, 2007 at 10:48 am
Hmmh…I’m having the same problem as Sam. I wonder if this is because my phone is the Asian model (Chinese characters keyboard). Is there a way to change or re-flash the device to an English only OS?
June 5th, 2007 at 12:21 pm
Has anyone got this running with Cingular in the US on E61i? I had the older pre-installed BB Connect running fine with corporate BES and 2 BIS accounts but not after upgrading. It said it needed re-activiation which I did but keeps sitting in the “Activating/synchronizing” state for past 12 hours.
If this fails, will try un-install and re-install.
June 5th, 2007 at 12:30 pm
um…. may I know the older version doesn’t have Enterprise activation? My company is also using BES, and my internal support told me that only your software support Enterprise activation can do so. thksss

when do we get “Attachment Viewer updates for pictures ” on poor old E61? I need it

I am really frustrated that every time I download it it installs in chinese! Has anyone got this working or know what is going on?
June 6th, 2007 at 1:13 am
Had a chat with the tech support and they are aware of this issue and will be resolving it “as soon as possible” . So for those that dont understand chinese like me, suggest is to wait out first.
June 6th, 2007 at 5:42 am
Agree with above comments I have installed the new version and had to roll Back since the new version did not want to connect even though I had keys generated. Looks like good new functionality. Using a corporate email system. My suggestion is to wait. Old version back up and running
June 6th, 2007 at 9:00 am
It installed fine on my cingular e62, but still no attachment viewer support like it states. I get invalid attachment or table of contents not valid when i try and open a jpg. Looks like i still will have to use BB connect along with mail for exchange.
June 6th, 2007 at 10:06 am
I talked to tech support guys, and they are aware of the problem with Asian model phones. They will release a new BB Connect client that addresses these issues in next two days.
June 6th, 2007 at 10:14 am
FYI: Don’t install BBC4 after Outlook Mail and then resync! Deleted all my contacts and calender entries in outlook. Boo…
June 6th, 2007 at 5:25 pm
I have e61i and upgraded BBC2.1 to BBC4.
I was able to send but not to receive.
I unstalled BB, deleted Access Point Blackberry and Blackberry2 and reinstalled BBC4 from scratch.
Now it appears to be working fine.
Beware, when I uninstalled the BB all of my contacts and calendars were lost.
I am trying to route all data conection to Access Point Blackberry and Blackberry2 without success. I read that BBC4 is supposed to support that, anyone knows anything about that? (I hope not to wait to BBC5)
June 6th, 2007 at 8:21 pm
So whats the verdict regarding BBC 4.0, gents?
To upgrade, or not to upgrade?
June 7th, 2007 at 4:04 am
Ok its up in English already. Now there is no option for other language but English. Apart from the BB 4 version dont seem to find to find a Blackberry Browser. I was expecting the BB 4 version to include that but looks like its not for Symbian or at least in this version. This is because if i were to use the Blackberry Browser i would get unlimited GPRS connection time. RIM have included the Blackberry Browser in the BBC 4 for the Windows and Smartphone platform but not for this one apparently. This could be a deal breaker for some. Let me put it thru its paces and see whether there is any other improvement. I hope this is an interim version and the final one would include bb browser.
June 7th, 2007 at 10:53 am
Hey Guys,
How do I tell what version I am running?? I go to the details menu of my BBC on my E61i and it says BlackBerry 7.01(4)…So I don’t know what version I am running?? Any Ideas??
June 7th, 2007 at 1:38 pm
yay! english! everthing is now working fine here.
June 7th, 2007 at 3:02 pm
i just reread what BBC 4 have to offer, look like no diff except to view pics, ota activation and stuff that is more for IS usage then end user usage. They did not mentioned about incorporating a BB Browser. Sigh… the BB 4 for Windows and Smartphone incorporates this. The rest are mostly the same.
June 7th, 2007 at 4:25 pm
Hey Jay,
Where did you find it in english??
On the Nokia Site did you selcet Americas?
Thanks!
June 7th, 2007 at 9:38 pm
OK. take 2 first attempt BBC 4.00 did not work. I hard reset my e61i and did a clean install of the new BB client and activated it on my corporate network using a cable for activation.; Now it works perfectly contacts are now syncing over the air NO need to sync any more with PC. if anyone is planning to upgrade prepare to have issues its not a clean upgrade.
June 9th, 2007 at 6:08 pm
Ok discovered that when i jus activated the BB Connect 4, usually for the previous version i am not able to receive the full email but only the headers initial email received, subsequent email is ok. However for the BB 4, when i press the D Pad down key, for the email that it retrieved initially, it will now retrieve the full email. I remember during the early days of E61 BB Connect they too used to have these feature but subsequent upgrade kinda off disable it. But of for BB 4 it works.
Another thing is that i notice that there is a slight improvement in terms of retrieving email.
June 10th, 2007 at 3:30 am
I just upgraded from E61 to E61i. Loaded BB 4 and it works great! Much better then on E61. No regrets upgrading to the new phone
And having a camera = point, shoot, blog!
June 11th, 2007 at 3:08 pm
BBC 4.0 works very well on the E61i. The key feature for me is contact sync, very convenient. Strongly recommended.
June 11th, 2007 at 10:56 pm
Just upgraded to BB Connect 4 on my E61 (I know…I want the E61i/E90), and it works perfectly. No error messages, just worked as always.
June 13th, 2007 at 6:24 am
Has anyone been able to get BB Connect to work with Cingular/AT&T and an Enterprise Server? I tried to get it running an I keep getting a message that says that I’m not connected to the network. Cingular/AT&T says that they don’t support enterprise activation with the E61i.
Thanks!
June 14th, 2007 at 2:14 am
Anybody got any experience in using the 4.0 version with adress synchronization? I upgraded my E61 with the new client and did enterprise activation. Everything seems to run well except synchronizing contacts with Outlook over the air.
Any idea?
June 14th, 2007 at 5:43 am
Nike,
How did you get this to work on a Cingular E62? I keep getting a message that the client does not support the current firmware.
Thanks,
Andy
June 14th, 2007 at 7:05 am
Does BBC4 allow you to move messages to folders in the server? Also does it support syncing of tasks? Thanks, Aybee

June 16th, 2007 at 11:57 am
the trick is..if you are using BB connect 2.x you have to uninstall and then install BB connect 4. It will not work, so you have to uninstall BB connect 4 again and turn off your device. After re-open it you have to re-install BB connect 4 again then activate your account as normal. It will work at this time. I don’t know why it’s happen like that but it works fine.
June 19th, 2007 at 3:07 pm
So will BBConnect allow me to do an OTA activation with my corporate server if I have a BIS account with my cell phone provider? I’m using Fido in Canada and they do not have BES, only BIS. With the new OTA feature with BBConnect 4.0, will I be able to sync with my corporate server?
Many thanks!
June 23rd, 2007 at 8:02 pm
Hi Faultlog,
I am having some serious problem with BES activation with Fido. In fact, I don’t think they support it.
BIS works nice and smooth (I had to downgrade though. V4 wasn’t picking up e-mails at all, without me manually reconciling), but BES, well that’s another story…
I’ve sent Fido an e-mail to check their BB Connect service works with a BES. So far, no reply… I’m keeping the hopes high
June 25th, 2007 at 3:54 pm
Thanks Tom. I’m in the process of inquring as well. I’ll keep you posted.
June 26th, 2007 at 6:50 am
ok-does anybody gained any experience if BBC 4.0 works with Cingular in the US. I have a BB from my employer and would like to buy the Nokia e61i. Does it work or not? Thanks for any answers… waterrosefish at yahoo dot com.
June 26th, 2007 at 6:15 pm
Hi Faultlog,
Got the final answer from Fido. BES is not supported, only BIS is. If you want to connect to your BES, your only option is to go with Robbers…

June 29th, 2007 at 11:35 am
I had the same experience as anjoela.
I was using BB connect 2.x on an E61i. I didn’t uninstall 2.x, I installed v. 4 on top of it. Install went fine but I couldn’t get the Authentication with the server working. I uninstalled v. 4 and reinstalled right away (no reboot). It then activated my account as normal (it took about 15 minutes for the all process to complete) after I entered my email/password.
BB is now working fine on my E61i. I have not seen any significant UI change yet (I installed 2 hours ago), but I will share my findings once I have a few more days of use.

where do i find the software for blackberry connect for e my e90
i have tried to search it everywhere on the internet but in vain
please advise
July 2nd, 2007 at 1:30 am
I tried it on my E61i and installed over the earlier version. It did nothing at all, but looking at the posts here, it seems I need to reinstall a second time, or remove the existing Blackberry access points and try again.
One question and nobody seems to have addressed it here, if I remove the existing version to install BBC 4.0, how can I backup my messages using BIS? I do not run it with BES. Its run on BIS with O2 Ireland and the web interface no longer has access to emails, so the last time I tried installing, I deleted about 1000 emails and lost everything
July 3rd, 2007 at 1:52 am
Installed Nokia Blackberry Connect 4.0 vers. 7.17.2_2 on my E61 connected to corporate BES version 4, I had initial problems getting this to connect used an old trick switching the pin to an old BB then switching back to the E61, Shame Notes and task’s arent included in the wireless sync but overall a great update.
July 4th, 2007 at 2:52 am
please i need a full list of the attachments supported by Nokia E61i over Blackberry connect. thaks for your co-operations.

July 24th, 2007 at 7:14 am
Hi folks
BBC4 on Nokia E61/i does not support web browsing via the MDS gateway. the IPPP Service Book is not transferred when the OTA or desktop activation is performed. Not sure about the E90 as have not tried it yet. Nokia were ahead of MS on this but unfortunately BBC4 for WM6 does support FULL Blackberry services inc MDS browsing so the Nokia boyz better get their skates on.

I use blackberry connect 4.0 on my european e61 with tmobile (thanks largely to this blog) and It works just fine except for a couple of things:
1. I noticed after the first 2 weeks or so it slowed down considerably when I accessed reply - there was a hang time there that didn’t exist before.
Does anyone have a fix for this? I’ve been scouring magz and blogs but can’t find anything that addresses this.
2. When I used tmobile’s total internet add in as my mail system I was able to read attachments, but now with bb as my email it won’t allow me to read attachments, and doesn’t recognize the file extension.
I’m sorry if this had been asked and answered before - maybe I missed it. Can anyone offer guidance?
thanks!

I am looking to get a Nokia E61i to replace my blackberry Pearl. I must say, that when I am in areas of weak signal, the BB Pearl drops calls easily. Every Nokia I have ever had holds signal better than any other brand.
My question is, if anyone knows, is will the E61i work with BES on T-Mobile? I am the BES admin for my company, so if I need to do anything server side, I have that covered. But since T-Mobile never offered the 61i, I know I can get the phone part to work, just wondering about the BES.
Any information or links to articles would be great.

Eric,
I just purchased a E61i unlocked which I received 90 minutes ago today, and installed blackberry connect and the desktop software (both 4.0 versions) — the installations went without a hitch and my E61i on T-Mobile USA is fully functional — I am using the BES but I am not the BES admin
Try downloading it from here…
http://www.businesssoftware.nokia.com/blackberry_downloads.php?note=&re=EMEA&op=Other&pm=E61i&lang=
Good luck.

@Tom and anyone else on Fido…
I’ve got a Nokia E61 that i’m looking to get running on the Fido Blackberry Connect plan. What version of Blackberry Connect are you using on your e61? There’s so many on the Nokia site…
Thanks!

hi everyone.
have already downloaded the BBCv4.0 for my E61 and have experienced the following, thats why im reverted back to 2.1.1:
1. overall slowdown of phone performance. everytime i try to go to Messaging to view my SMS Inbox, the processing time takes is too slow and the phone seems to hang, even when i just try to make a reply.
2. old UNREAD messages in my corporate mailbox were not sent to my E61
3. contacts in my corporate address book is not synced. when i removed the BBCv4.0 in my E61 all my contacts were gone! good thing i have backup.
should anybody out there know how to setup BBCv4.0 to run properly or faster, i am willing to re-install BBCv4.0 unto my E61.
October 13th, 2007 at 2:53 am
IT’S not working for me, the setttings seems to be ok but not getting any emails on E 61 rather than Nokia 9300i work just fine
October 14th, 2007 at 12:52 pm
I have T-mobile service and currently use a Blackberry Pearl with our BES. When I go to download the software and select TMobile and e61i it says its not supported by my carrier.
I have an e61i (unlocked) on order and should get here in a few days. Does this mean it will not work with TMobile, or simply that if I call for help, that they will not support the e61i with BC and my Blackberry plan? I work in IT, so I am not too concerned about getting support from TMobile (or RIM for that matter)
I would just like to know if anyone is using the e61i with TMobile and a BES server successfully. Also, were you able to upgrade to 4.0 and do the Enterprise activation or did you have to use the Blackberry desktop software?
October 14th, 2007 at 12:58 pm
Sorry, I appearently missed Krishna’s reply to me a while back. I finally looked around and decided to order the e61i. If nothing else, I can use another method for getting my exchange mail, but BES is our coporate “standard.”
Thanks.

hi
i have a nokia e 65 handsets i updated the nokia software from nokia web site . before the blackberry connect was working , now when i downloaded the new software from nokia and when i starting the black berry it saying that blackberry software version is not authoriesd for use with phone software version contect your service provider
January 24th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
We purchased unlocked phones instead of renewing our contract and upgrading. The primary reason is Nokia’s e51 phones are smaller and more feature rich than anything T-Mobile currently offer.
I requested T-Mobile add the “BlackBerry Unlimited w/Enterprise Email Add-on” services. My Nokia e51 uses Symbian S60 v3.1 “100.34.20, 29-09-2007, RM-244, nokia e51 (01.1)”. I downloaded and installed “Nokia S60 BlackBerry Connect 4.0 vers. 7.45.1″ from http://www.businesssoftware.nokia.com/ . There is no e51 model in the drop down list. Select Americas>*Other>e90 and download the first version.
Initially I had an issue with the error “No password exists for this account. Contact your IT administrator” when performing an OTA activation. However the error was with my employer’s BES server. Once the account was deleted and re-created, the activation went as planned.
At one point I called for support when activating Blackberry Enterprise Services on the Nokia e51. T-Mobile tech mistakenly concluded that the Nokia’s BlackBerry Connect software would only support BlackBerry Internet Services (BIS) not BES. That was incorrect!
January 25th, 2008 at 3:17 am
I have been having terrible problems getting Blackberry Connect 4.0 to work on my E61i which is on the Orange network here in the UK. I finally managed to get my PIN number to activate my Blackberry account, and cannot get my handset to connect with Blackberry. It’s a weird problem - sometimes my PIN number doesn’t come up on my E6i, sometimes it does. The Orange guys were no help, I spent almost two hours talking to Blackberry yesterday, and they were similarly confused. I have reintalled twice now [once it managed to delete all my phone contacts too!].
Has anyone got any suggestions on how to get this thing working. Close to giving up and admitting that if you want Blackberry software, get a Blackberry!
January 25th, 2008 at 11:43 am
and it wiped my calender too.
January 30th, 2008 at 11:11 pm
Hi jsa13,
T-Mobile Blackberry does not support E51 at all. I think only Telstra in Australia, and some provider in England do. However, I’m surprised T-Mobile tech person claimed such a nonsense. Blackberry Connect is aimed at enterprise market, support for BIS was added later. I would say the client with BIS account utilizes only 20% of the overall functionality.
For Jake, the uninstall wipes out the calendar and contact database, as well as message store. Your best bet is to start fresh, and so wipe out the device using *#7370# key combination. After you install, the PIN number should show up in BB setting. With BB Connect 2.1, you should have the PIN number generated in settings even without SIM card. For BB Connect 4.0, PIN number is generated dynamically on the server side, and sent to device. Somehow your device is not being recognized by NOC as RIM approved device. Do you have the right device software and BB client version combination? It is critical you do, or NOC won’t let you get on the network.
January 31st, 2008 at 3:58 am
Jake,
Are you using BES or BIS ?
I have just migrated 14 users from Blackberries on Orange to E61i on 02 using BES server. Main problem was h/w version and BB version.
1.06xxxx > 7.17
2.06xxxx > 7.45
Blackberry connection kept turning off. With perserverance all worked.
Monthly fee down from £49 to £20 per handset
February 11th, 2008 at 4:37 am
Colin,
I am not using BES. If it’s not a stupid question, what is BIS? Individual?
I have the right software version on the phone and of the software according to the Nokia business software site.
I was just on the phone to Orange, and they told me to put the packet data connection to always on. This got my pin number back up but they still couldn’t send me a service book. Then the PIN kept disappearing again. If you could contact me direct on jakepolonsky@gmail.com I would be really grateful.

Hi,
Recently Purchased an E90 (ER_14) and installed bb connect 4.0. It worked fine for 1 day and thereafter emails stop coming in. Neither can I send mail. All settings and BB status looked ok. It is getting more frustrating each day as i have to reinstall the BB application and reactivate the account everytime.
Does anyone has similar problem or advice on any settings to overcome this problem.
tks in adv
April 8th, 2008 at 6:12 pm
I am getting an e61i tonight. All documents i have read tell me that AT&T/Cingular DOES NOT support Blackberry Connect for the e61i. Nokia’s website doesn’t even have it for download. Rumors have it that AT&T may take on the nokia, but friends of mine that work at the stores say they are so far in bed with RIMM, that it is doubtful anytime soon.
My company also has Exchange 2003, so why do i even need Blackberry Connect? ] Sure they have it as well, but doesn’t Exchange 2003 support PUSH email, as well as calendar and contacts?
April 12th, 2008 at 6:01 pm
has anyone solved the problem with not being able to view attachments (jpgs, pdfs) using bbconnect 4.0 on the e61? if u have pls post the work around it will be greatly appreciated!
thanks
June 26th, 2008 at 12:49 pm
Cannot get E61i activated on BES with AT&T and neither can anyone else that Ive found. Activation will always fail. Also there is no fully supported Blackberry connect software available from Nokia (must use E60 software). Defiantly don’t get one if plan to use with BES. Moreover RIM and AT&T will not acknowledge problems with the software, neither side will take responsibility for the product. Just an FYI.
June 27th, 2008 at 9:55 am
I can confirm that it does work on AT&T. I have app v 4.0.0.85 working on my e61i for many moons now (long before the last two posts). Having said that, I can’t stand it… At least on BIS. I’m too cheap to spring for BES and exchange. Don’t get me wrong — it works for BIS’s push (!?) email well enough — I get email every 3 to 15 minutes, typically.
Long story short, I ended up purchasing profimail from lonelycat and use imap. The attachment viewing is phenomenal, and it’s *well* worth the $30 or so. This has also been in use for many moons, so I’ve given a good look at both. profimail works better on the nokia hands down, but you just can’t beat a true blackberry for general text email handling.
July 13th, 2008 at 7:22 am
i just got the e71, will this work on it? otherwise, is there any other options?
thanks.
July 14th, 2008 at 7:38 am
Hi all,
I’ve got BB connect installed on my E61i, just recently. Yet: there is a difficulty in synchronizing the calender, so far it is only a one-way-route: outlook to BBconnect / E61i calendar works fine, but the other way around… Does anyone have a tip for me?
Answers highly appreciated. Best regards.
July 14th, 2008 at 12:04 pm
@ desmond,
There is currently no BB Client for Nokia E71. I suggest you try out “Mail for Exchange” which does a great job syncing Exchange data wirelessly with your device.
There are many blog posts about Mail for Exchange on this blog.
July 14th, 2008 at 9:39 pm
thanks for the reply. however, the company is using lotus notes. will that work?
