Pimp Your Nokia E61 With Themes
A few readers have asked me what theme I was using in the previous posting. I decided to focus this posting on how to personalize (read: "pimp") your Nokia E61 with themes.
Themes are downloaded and managed similarly to applications. They come in .sis files that you will need to install on your Nokia E61.
Just accept and install the themes. To enable and manage your themes go to Tools > Themes.
From left to right, below are four example of themes 1) Standard Nokia 2) S60 Color 3) S60, and the last my favourite - 4) Aqua.
![]()
"Aqua" is the theme I used in my previous post. Auqa was created by the talented Roman Keller and is available for download. Thanks Roman for creating Aqua and sharing it with the rest of us.
Once again, below are the menu screens of the following themes from left to right 1) Standard Nokia 2) S60 Color 3) S60 4) Aqua.
As a "bonus" theme here is Dark Sky made by Toaster. Perhaps not the most practical theme but still quite nice in my book. There are many more Themes for the Nokia E61 here.
For those of you interested in learning more about themes and possibly create your own themes there is a free tool available. The S60 Theme Studio for Symbian OS is available for download here. If you do create some unique themes and would like me to post them here please drop me a note.

Where can I get the Dark Skies theme? Please e-mail me @ apovolotski@aim.com

I went to themes, but only see the “Nokia” theme, not the others. When I click on “Theme downloads” nothing seems to happen. Any advice on something I’m doing wrong?
Thanks,
Joe

Hi Joe,
If only the Nokia Theme shows up then the Themes are not proparly installed. Go to Tools > App mgr and see if you can find the themes you wanted to installl in the application manager. If they show up as “not installed” you can try to re-install by pressing in the joystick and then selecting install.
If the temes don’t show up in the application manager they were not proparly transferred to the device. Then you just have to use PC Suite or Bluetooth them over to the device.
I hope that helps!
July 6th, 2006 at 3:08 pm
I looked and they aren’t showing up at all in the App mgr. Where do I find the themes to install? How and where do I put them onto the phone.
I just got this yesterday and it’s my first smartphone & Nokia so I’m feeling a bit lost right now.
July 6th, 2006 at 4:32 pm
Hi Joe,
Here is a brief step-by-step.
1. Download the Theme you like - they come in standard .SIS packages
If on a PC - connect your Nokia E61 to the PC (I assume you have installed PC suite which comes on the install CD)
2. Double click on the SIS package
3. Accept the SIS package on your device (PC suite will tell you to continue the download on your Nokia E61)
4. Go to the App. mgr on the Nokia E61 and enable the Theme.
If you are on a Mac, or if you like Bluetooth you can use “Bluetooth File Exchange” (on a Mac) and send the .SIS file to your device via Bluetooth. The file will then show up as a message. You just accept the message and it will install.

Thanks Ed!
This site is going to be a life saver for us newbies…
So, if you don’t mind one more question. Where would I find some good themes? Specifically, the themes you showcase in this post.
July 6th, 2006 at 4:43 pm
Thanks Joe. It is comments like yours that keeps me going.
All the Themes in the post have download links (look before the second set of four pictures grouped together. There is also a link in the second to last sentence that points to where you can find many free Themes.
Cheers

July 7th, 2006 at 4:28 pm
Hi Gumbet,
This could be the issue. For added protection against “malware” there is rather strict application signing procedure implemented for S60 3.0. The device comes with the standard setting to check for proper signatures and will not install if the application sigining is lacking, out of date etc.
This could be the problem.
Go to Tools > App. mgr > Options > Settings . change “software installation” from “Signed Only” to “All” and “Onlline certic check” to “off”.
This will most likely fix your problem. However, please be aware that you turned off one extra layer of security for the device. I wouldn’t be too worried about malware but it is important to only install software from known sources.

Thanks Admin,
This worked and themes now load after security warning. Great site for early adopters keep up the good work.

Hello Ed.
I would like to install and store my new themes on my SD card. I am away from home so the computer I am using does not have PC Suite loaded and b/c it is administratively (i.e. CORPORATE) locked I cant download and install it either. I have downloaded the themes to my computer but I have had no luck figuring out where on the SD card to place them so that they may be recognized and installed OR at least recognized so I can move them to the INTERNAL memory for installation. Please help if you can!!

Hey guys! Love the site, but just one thing… Can anyone send me the Aqua theme? It’s no longer available on Roman Keller’s site, and I’m absolutely heartbroken… It was the one I most wanted…
August 29th, 2006 at 7:10 am
HI,
I downloaded the Aqua Blue Theme on my Mac but now how do I install it onto my E61… Using iSync?
August 30th, 2006 at 7:04 am
How can I delete a unwanted theme? I got some other themes that are taking valuable space of my (small) memory card. I tried but didn’t find anything that indicates a possibility for deleting a theme.
September 1st, 2006 at 12:27 pm
I’ve allready found the answers here: http://my-symbian.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=27595 . I had to change to a othet theme before deleting the actual theme. In the link I provided is described the other method by using PC-suites browser.
September 3rd, 2006 at 10:13 am
Hahaha… Well as it turns out, the Aqua theme IS available on Roman Keller’s site. There’s just a newer version found on a different page. Love the site btw, keep up the good work!

Thanks for pointing that out. I updated the links.

Tom -
you asked:
“I downloaded the Aqua Blue Theme on my Mac but now how do I install it onto my E61… Using iSync?”
Easy you just use the Send File option under Bluetooth.
I take it you’ve paired your phone to your Mac right?

hello, I love the themes showcases in here. And I have tried to download the carbide.ui to experiment abit to try to create my own theme. Basicallly it is not real hard to use the application, but I would wonder is there a way I could get the icons in the the themes which showcase here? Becuase I just want to change some fonts and background out of these themes for my own.
Really appreciate.
ps: the icons come with the application looks ugly…

Hi visioneer,
I am not the author of this great themes so I can’t help you. However, I would gladly feature your theme when they are ready for prime time. Let me know if I can showcase them here.

Thanx for your fast reply!
In fact the certificate is not the problem, I turned that off earlier already. I don´t get to this point. Before it says that the installation of this file is not supportet, that´s before the certificate check….
I have software version 2.0618.06.05, and with the version befor i had the same problem.
thx very much, greets

Hello all, I have a question, why on all these good themes the scroll bar spins in reverse and not at the right direction as in the Nokia default theme or the turquiese theme?
October 11th, 2006 at 1:46 am
I’m getting a lot of error during them instalation.
In 10 diferent themes I’ve only manage to install one. I allways get “Certificate Error. Please contact the aplication supplier” error messages.
Can someone give me a hand?
What I’m I doing wrong? It’s a problem of the files certificates our It can be solved in my phone?
Thank you

Thanks for the excellent site. Following the tips in the thread I’ve downloaded and installed the Darksky theme to an E60 using Bluetooth File Exchange for Mac OS X within 5 minutes. Not really into much customisation myself but became bored with the nokia theme.
Thanks again!

How do you ERADICATE a theme from the Carbide.UI application. I created test theme and manually removed it by deleting the directory. But if I try to reproduce a theme with that name, the application tells me the theme already exists. This is major! How/Why in the world would the theme become linked to the application?!?!
December 7th, 2006 at 1:18 pm
Everytime I download the aqua theme it says zip fie corrupted. Any chance I get to download the .sis file of it? Thanks in advance. By the way, I’m using my E61 for surfing the web and downloading.

Hello
I am looking for customizing default E61 theme: the only thing I need to change is default font size. If possible font name and background colors also. This is because I cannot read texts in default font in Feed Client or Help for example - they are too small :(.
Is there a way to solve this?
Thanks

Attique.
Set the date of your device back one year, install the theme, then set the date correctly. Easy as one, two three.

I am getting the same “Unable to Install” error now. I have been theme addicted for the last couple months and fell in love with BlueRed by Babi. While talking on the phone today my signal died out in an area it shouldn’t have so I reset the device. When it came back up in was in a default Nokia theme and it said BlueRed was corrupted. I cannot reinstall BlueRed and if I try and put on any other one it runs through the entire process and then upon completion it states “Unable to Install” I am using 1st gold now but I need my MAC theme and BlueRed back. Please help!
